Abstract:Traditional Li-ion intercalation chemistry into graphite anodes exclusively utilizes the cointercalation-free or cointercalation mechanism. The latter mechanism is based on ternary graphite intercalation compounds (t-GICs), where glyme solvents were explored and proved to deliver unsatisfactory cyclability in LIBs. Herein, we report a novel intercalation mechanism, that is, in situ synthesis of t-GIC in the tetrahydrofuran (THF) electrolyte via a spontaneous, controllable reaction between...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the performance problems of lithium - ion batteries under extreme conditions, especially in terms of fast charging, low - temperature performance and ultra - long cycle life. The traditional chemical mechanism of lithium - ion intercalation into graphite anodes mainly depends on non - co - intercalation or co - intercalation mechanisms. However, these traditional methods have some limitations in practical applications, such as poor cycle stability and large volume expansion. The paper proposes a new intercalation mechanism, that is, in - situ synthesis of ternary graphite intercalation compounds (t - GIC) during the initial lithiation of graphite through a spontaneous and controllable reaction in tetrahydrofuran (THF) electrolyte. This new t - GIC chemical mechanism avoids complete desolvation of lithium ions and promotes rapid kinetics and synchronous charge - discharge processes, which can be achieved even at high current densities. Therefore, the graphite anode exhibits an unprecedented fast - charging ability (1 minute), dendrite - free low - temperature performance and an ultra - long cycle life of more than 10,000 cycles. Specifically, the paper solves the following problems: 1. **Fast charging**: It achieves the ability to complete charging within 1 minute, significantly improving the fast - charging performance of the battery. 2. **Low - temperature performance**: Under the extremely low - temperature condition of - 40°C, the battery can still maintain excellent rate capability and stable cycle performance. 3. **Ultra - long cycle life**: At a high current density of 10C, the battery can stably cycle more than 10,000 times with a capacity retention rate as high as 93%. 4. **Cost reduction**: Using THF as an electrolyte solvent brings a huge cost reduction compared with commercial electrolyte solvents and other solvents under development. The paper conducts a detailed study on the formation process of this new mechanism and its impact on battery performance through a series of experimental and characterization methods, such as in - situ synchrotron radiation X - ray diffraction, electrochemical analysis, molecular dynamics simulation, etc. These research results not only enrich the knowledge base of graphite intercalation chemistry but also provide important progress for lithium - ion chemistry working under extreme conditions.
