Abstract:Despite comprehensive studies conducted to understand the performance of hollow core slabs, limited information exists about post cracking behavior and specifically the tension stiffening characteristic of this system. Post cracking behavior is mainly studied in solid beams and slabs and hollow core slabs are less regarded in this field. In this paper, post cracking behavior and tension stiffening effect of hollow core slabs are studied by conducting a series of experimental tests and numerical analyses on six longitudinal strips of hollow core slabs with single void and also on five hollow core slabs with multiple voids. The numerical analyses were performed by a program in MATLAB software based on a layered approach which was specifically developed for analysis of hollow core slabs. Several well-known stress–strain relationships of tensile concrete have been implemented in the code. Analytical results are compared to experimental ones and eventually, the most appropriate constitutive equation of tensile concrete is proposed for predicting post cracking behavior of hollow core slabs. It is also concluded that concrete tensile relationships which are appropriate for flexural behavior prediction of single void strips cannot predict well the flexural behavior of multiple voided hollow core slabs and on the contrary hollow core slabs relationships are not applicable for single void strips.
