Abstract:Recently, many signs of distress were developed on the various columns of the School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) building constructed in the early 2000s, located on the University of Ottawa campus (Ontario, Canada). Thus, a visual inspection was performed to select four columns showing the highest deterioration signs to extract cores for conducting a condition assessment. Once core specimens were retrieved and prepared, they were subjected to petrographic examination followed by the multi-level assessment (i.e., coupling of microscopic and mechanical examination), which was previously proved to be a reliable protocol for evaluating the condition of ASR-affected concrete. The results revealed that all examined elements were deteriorated by ASR to a distinct extent (i.e., 0.03%, 0.05%, and 0.08% expansion). Lastly, a deeper analysis of petrographic features among the specimens indicated the presence of cracks originating in the cement paste, which could be attributed to the presence of freeze and thaw distress in the columns; this therefore attests that most of the examined concrete members likely affected by coupled ASR+FT.
