Abstract:case studies. Some chapters are more theoretical than others, some more polemic. ‘The myth of the chief: prestige goods, power and personhood in the European Bronze Age’ by Joanna Brück & David Fontijn is evidently polemic and inspiring although, at least in part, I tend to disagree with the relational approach to personhood as presented here which is contradicted by thousands of burials from Central and Northern Europe that speak of a normative, institutionalised social personhood. This issue is also the topic for much of Marie Louise Stig Sørensen’s chapter, ‘Identity, gender and dress in the European Bronze Age’, which in some ways balances and indirectly responds to Brück & Fontijn. But the latter also wish to challenge the whole idea of an advanced Bronze Age political economy based on commodity trade. Here Tobias Kienlin indirectly lends supports in his chapter on Bronze Age metalworking, seeing specialisation but not beyond local kinship groups. One only needs, however, to read a handful of the other contributions on trade, transport, technology and mining, or Christopher Pare’s chapter on ‘Weighing, commodification and money’ to find a different perspective. In this way, the thematic chapters engage the reader in an ongoing theoretical and interpretative argument, which also includes a ‘Rethinking of Bronze Age cosmology’ by Joakim Goldhahn and new interpretations of rock art from the Alps to Scandinavia. Many chapters deal with what adds up to an economic history of the Bronze Age: fields and land divisions, animals, plant cultivation, salt production and trade. Thus, Part I is full of engaging culture historical and interpretative articles that will provide a useful starting point for both the student and the Bronze Age researcher alike.

Abstract:One of the intellectual advances achieved by what has been called “the Renaissance discovery of Time” was the realisation that the most interesting thing about the past is what makes it the past. A secularised historiography—involving recognition of anachronism, historical development and the relativity of truth—marks a decisive break with medieval thought. This paper seeks to explore one limited aspect of a vast topic, namely the effect of this revolution of thought on men's concept of the Roman past, which, I shall argue, was closely bound up with their perception of the English past. One result of the exploration will be to suggest a new perspective from which to consider Shakespeare's creative relationship with Roman, and also with English, history.

Abstract:Economy and Society, one of the most influential oeuvres of the early twentieth century, with impact in several branches of the Human Sciences, has in one of its parts a text of particular interest to researchers of Ancient History, the Typology of Cities. Although Max Weber’s significant aims in composing his text were, blatantly, to evaluate the contemporary world, the density of the Weberian text, the fruit of a unique erudition, revealed an in-depth and singular analysis of the ancient Greek city. The purpose of this article is to analyze Weber’s interpretive choices, in the light of historiographical criticism and a careful analysis of the Typology, in articular as regards the ideal types which he made to understand the city of the ancient Greeks.

Abstract:The early medieval times in Cyprus are signified, conventionally, by the Arab invasions of the mid-seventh century (649/650CE). Past research viewed those events as the catalyst which led to a transformation from a prosperous province to a marginal territory balancing between two antagonising empires. Recently, studies have shifted their focus on reassessing this period's scant -yet present- material culture. In pottery studies, despite the advances in typological and distribution aspects, few have explored technological issues of early medieval ceramic production through instrumental analysis. This study focuses on the compositional and technological characterisation of cooking vessels through ceramic petrography (TL-OM), found in relevant contexts in Cyprus, representing both wheel-thrown and handmade traditions. Sherds coming from five major early-medieval sites of the island (sites of Kophinou, Kalavasos-Kopetra, Akrotiri, Yeroskipou-Ayioi Pente and Dhiorios), outlined a picture of two parallel trends transversing across sites, i.e., an inter-regional shared sense of shape uniformity smoothening the local variances and a strong regionalism in terms of raw material procurement. Wheel-thrown cookware -found in every site and strongly represented by the Dhiorios workshop- showed the survival of Late Antique shapes well into the Early Middle Ages, in fabrics related mainly to the broader area of Dhiorios. In addition, handmade vessels of a "shared repertoire" showed a variety of local clays for their manufacture. When integrated into their archaeological context in Cyprus, the results support the idea of a ceramic koine persisting through the beginning of the Byzantine Early Middle Ages on an intra and inter-regional level.

Abstract:“De Piloso Fonte Sum”: On Dishonorable Backgrounds, Lawsuits, Guilds, and Artisans in Early Renaissance Cluj. This study, based on an exceptional source (a judicial record of 1549, published here for the first time) aims at the restitution of the biography and the distinctive character and personality of an early Renaissance painter from Transylvania, Gregorius Pictor, while making recurrent references to the artistic milieu of the sixteenth century Cluj – the town where he was mainly active. The study reveals, undoubtedly, one of the most comprehensive painters’ biographies of Transylvania in early modern times.
