Abstract:The paper aims to present research activities about cultural and built heritage at various scales, from architecture to landscape, highlighting how innovative analysis and design approaches can challenge the current methods and pursue the main scope of increasing heritage resilience. The main scientific focus, heritage, works as a cross-cutting topic that is investigated according to the different disciplinary perspectives. At the same time this issue is able to merge the diverse souls of the research team: history of architecture, geomatics, drawing and survey, restoration, regeneration and design. Major results and findings are discussed throughout a set of case studies. These allowed to develop tools to perform rapid surveys and multilevel readings (stylistic, structural, historical, behavioral, etc.) as well as robust procedures for interventions and recycle at different scales of built heritage. Technologies and procedures are tested and validated on these cases that serve as prototypes. Finally, the paper aims to possibly extend the validated approaches to similar cases in the heritage field. The main research activities, indeed, entail the definition of the fundamental paradigms of resilience for heritage and landscape, against the backdrop of the contemporary techno-cultural revolution.
Architectural Perspective in Two Seventeenth-Century Galleries in Genoa

Abstract:In the second half of the seventeenth century there was a transformation in interior decoration of palaces in Genoa, which was oriented towards an integration between architecture, painting, furniture, and stucco. This research studies the decorations of two Genoese seventeenth-century galleries, in Palazzo Balbi Senarega and Palazzo Rosso respectively, where the process of this evolution, analysed through perspective studies, can be observed. The tools adopted include nodal-photography techniques, which allow one to perceive real spaces and their decoration through interactive panoramic spherical photos. This technique also produces high-resolution planar photos that are used to apply the reverse-perspective construction method thanks to the presence of architectural elements in the pictorial representation. Transgressions in the geometry of linear perspective and in architectural models can be noted and different reconstructions can be hypothesised, which furthermore allow the construction of three-dimensional virtual models of the illusory spaces integrated into the real ones.

Abstract:The increase in concrete structures' durability is a milestone to improve the sustainability of buildings and infrastructures. In order to ensure a prolonged service life, it is necessary to detect the deterioration of materials by means of monitoring systems aimed at evaluating not only the penetration of aggressive substances into concrete but also the corrosion of carbon-steel reinforcement. Therefore, proper data collection makes it possible to plan suitable restoration works which can be carried out with traditional or innovative techniques and materials. This work focuses on building heritage and it highlights the most recent findings for the conservation and restoration of reinforced concrete structures and masonry buildings.

Abstract:The emergence of new technologies has dynamized the way in which cultural heritage is documented, preserved, and passed on to new generations; something that determines a paradigm shift in terms of research in this field. Most operations now also have access to the virtual component. In this context, the current study aimed to make accessible through virtual and augmented reality one of the most interesting objectives belonging to the Jewish cultural heritage built in Art Nouveau style in the municipality of Oradea (Romania), which currently functions as a La Belle Epoque Museum. In the study, the techniques of terrestrial, aerial photogrammetry, and terrestrial laser scanning were used to remodel, in a three-dimensional format, as faithful as possible and usable in different applications, the special architecture of the exterior of the monument. This information was doubled by making the interior of the monument accessible through a complete and complex series of panoramic images interconnected within a virtual tour that will be made available to tourists interested in discovering the Darvas-La Roche House. The virtual tour, which includes both graphic, textual, and audio information, represents an innovative approach for the buildings built in Art Nouveau style in the municipality of Oradea, representing a virtual bridge for better promotion of the tourist destination and for the awareness of the local people regarding the importance of preserving and appreciating the local cultural heritage. This is all the more important as this is the first initiative to make the Art Nouveau buildings in Oradea Municipality accessible to the general public in an innovative way.

Abstract:An unexpected universal shift, unprecedented for the present generation, has lately been dramatically altering the times we experience. The change of the usual global dynamic generated by the pandemic and affecting the medical, social, cultural, economic universe known so far to the contemporary man, has been predictably expanding for the last year towards foreseeable aspects of the everyday life, but has also surprisingly resurfaced long lost beliefs and values, previously hidden under a profit-driven, tinsel tendency of the daily. As seen through an architectural lens, the past challenging year has thoroughly redefined the relationship between inhabited space and its inhabitant, among many other domains related or foreign to architecture. As we gradually closed our doors towards the exterior, we simultaneously opened them towards the interior of our close community, our family, ourselves, unknowingly heading to a deep and long, probably never before experienced, introspection. From an architectural point of view, the universal style has therefore been losing its impact and importance, as our perception has increasingly been getting closer to ancient values and ideals because of the precarious pandemic features of everyday life. Due to the increased sensibility created by this global phenomenon, we are nowadays getting closer to the ancient understanding of individual and common space regardless of style or fashion. As what we perceive as appropriate and beautiful, does not just rely on personal perception and taste, but on certain quantifiable, perennial aspects, we intend to analyze and deepen the comprehension of these patterns. They can be understood through types of perception and return to the original without referencing established yet petrified styles, through architectural and gestalt theory, respectively the phenomenology of the dasein . The present research therefore, seeks to explain the intrinsic unity and inherent clarity, which give meaning to architecture in general and to a certain place in particular, by referencing quantifiable patterns of human values that interact with certain architectural languages on a profound level. As the attention of the modern man has mainly been directed towards the exterior, certain virtues have been introverted. However, this ancient vocabulary resurfaces when one shifts their focus towards the interior. Constancy, meaning, introspection, regionalism reencountered through profound presence in time and space, rediscovered roots and consciousness thereby birth the re-understanding of genius loci . A place defined as order, presence and permanence draws its essence from relationships, both encountered as built space and as intangible yet perceptible links between people and their communities. The present research aims to dissect the phenomenology of this profound relationship, in order to move away from the formal language of the architectural style but relationship, in order to move away from the formal language of the architectural style, but come closer to the fundamental gestalt -based features. The latter will therefore provide access to the original, clarifying how the architectural image no longer belongs to tradition or style, even if it can contain them. The main results of the research would be derived from the search and study of essence, both regarding the material and immaterial, in order to encounter and better define meaning in architecture, as datum.

Abstract:Abstract. The developments of the latest technology in the field of Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) are revolutionizing the methods of surveying, representing and managing the built heritage. The integrated use of 3D survey instruments such as laser scanning, digital photogrammetry and the new holistic way to represent the architecture, based on the Building Information Modeling (BIM), allows the collection, analysis and archiving of a large amount of data, by increasing information sharing among a great number of experts involved during the life cycle of the building. The paper focuses on the connection between Italy and Czech in terms of vaults patterns and construction techniques. The two case studies are the frame vault of the chapel of the Italian Cultural Institute and the barrel vault with lunettes of the Klementinum Baroque Library. They are both unique examples of the great expertise of architects and craftsmen that worked in Bohemia across the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of them were from the North of Italy, like the ones that worked in the building sites of the two case studies. The in-depth study of the construction techniques and the complex shapes needs the use of new scan-to-BIM modeling requirements, based on the definition of geometric primitives useful for the generation of intelligent three-dimensional models able to integrate different types of data. Finally, the acquired data are included in a database that collects information coming from both Italian and Czech studies, raising awareness among citizens of the richness of their built heritage.

Abstract:The genesis of the historical core of the city of Split, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rests on the continuity of urban life. The city has been subject to constant change over the course of almost two millennia, transforming from an ancient imperial palace into today’s city. The ever-changing urban landscape implies the need for a continual dialogue between old and new, especially considering the efforts made throughout history to develop a new image of the city. By analysing three examples—Milesi Palace from the Baroque period, Bajamonti Palace from the age of Classicism, and Nakić Palace from the Secession period, all national heritage listed buildings, the significance of the urban logic behind their construction, as well as the impact these buildings had on the image of the city, is established. All three buildings are located on the perimeter of the city’s public zone, and in different periods, they established new sets of urban rules, which they hold to this day. By researching their influence on the formation of Split’s urban tissue on their immediate and wider surroundings, their role in the city-building process is defined, thus revealing their impact on the formation of the urbanscape, as well as the relationships between architectural heritage and the city’s transformation.

Abstract:This study explores how cultural landscapes serve as dynamic interfaces between human societies and their environments, reflecting intricate interactions shaped by historical and societal changes. Cultural landscapes, embodying both tangible heritage (e.g., architecture, gardens, and urban spaces) and intangible heritage (e.g., traditions and practices), act as living archives that document the evolution of cultural identities and environmental care. Through the lens of historical analysis and case studies, including that of the legacy of the Roman Empire, this research examines the transformative impacts of political, economic, social, and cultural shifts on these landscapes. Methods include a comparative analysis of historical data and contemporary landscape assessments, used to understand how these spaces adapt to and reflect societal changes. The findings highlight the importance of preserving cultural landscapes for their educational and aesthetic value, ecological sustainability, and their role in maintaining historical continuity. The study underscores the need for integrating historical insights into contemporary landscape preservation and urban design to keep these spaces relevant for future generations. This research contributes to our understanding of the deep-seated connection between past civilizations and modern cultural identities through the stewardship of cultural landscapes.

Abstract:The edition ‘Prochiron / Urban Law’ by Prof. Mariana Tsibranska-Kostova is a study of a medieval legal monument related to the history of Bulgarian law. The research is based on the wide-approach and methodology, interpreting the considered matter in philological, legal and historical aspect. The author traces the history of the monument, the research about it and gives his interpretation of the topic. The Slavic text of Prochiron and a translation into modern Bulgarian were published as appendices. The study can be assessed as the most significant for the last decades in this scientific field.

Abstract:This EPJ + Focus Point on "Scientific Research in Cultural Heritage" brings together a selection of 27 papers from the 203 abstracts issued from 34 countries selected for the 2020 edition of the Conference on Innovation in Art Research and Technology before deciding to postpone it for 2 years following the health crisis. The articles that have been published in this Focus Point and which are integrated into the research fields of archaeometry or conservation sciences are presented by grouping them under the following three broad themes: comprehension of materials and techniques involved in cultural heritage; degradation mechanisms and conservation strategies and in situ experiments and mobile instrumentation. These articles, grouped together, illustrate current research in the field of innovation in art research and technology.

Abstract:The use of stone as a building material or ornamental element has a long tradition favoured by several factors such as the availability and ease of quarrying the material in places not far from the city. Until the beginning of the 20th century, stone was the builders'preferred material. During the first half of the 20th century, this supremacy began to wane due to the complex cultural, social, and material transformations that affected architecture. The outcome of these transformations was almost always associated with the rise of the structural frame and modern materials such as steel, concrete, and glass. Today, cladding is the field in which stone materials are most widely used, with the development of new techniques for on-site application, capable to give the stone facing characteristics and opportunities for use that were unattainable before. New extraction and production technologies also allow the use of stone materials that were once difficult to use. Among these, in contemporary Italian architecture, a stone, the Manciano sandstone, marketed under the name of Pietra Dorata ® , Pietra Dorata Toscana and Pietra di Santafiora is having great success. The purpose of this work is to examine, in relation to conservation aspects, the use of this sandstone in the city of Florence, where other sandstones have historically been used both in historic buildings and in claddings and ornamental works. Indeed, there are numerous examples of new constructions in Florence that have used Manciano sandstone as a cladding material over the last thirty years or so. Even for a relatively short period of exposure to atmospheric agents, decay phenomena can be observed that are essentially due to the type of installation or to other anthropic factors.
