Abstract:The paper examines theoretical and analytical premises for developing a systematic characterisation of spatial heritage in the urban landscape. Spatial heritage is proposed as alternative and active link between material and immaterial agencies in the formation of the cultural landscape over time. We probe the application of interdisciplinary research at the interface of spatial history, urban heritage, and space syntax studies to expand heritage definitions and understand the role of diachronic spatial elements in urban sustainability. With the use of space syntax analytical methods, we test quantitative descriptions of typological definition of ‘gateway-pathways’ in the urban landscape. The term refers to routes that historically connected peripheral settlements to the urban core of contemporary cities. The typology was developed during on-going research by the first author at the University of Zagreb as a part of Heritage Urbanism project with reference to a sample of 18 Central European cities that were formerly provincial capital cities of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. This paper looks at the city of Zagreb, Croatia and assesses its historic pathway typologies via syntactical analysis using the transect method established by Bill Hillier. Results give a quantitative validation of the spatial significance of some historical urban pathways over others.

Abstract:The genesis of the historical core of the city of Split, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rests on the continuity of urban life. The city has been subject to constant change over the course of almost two millennia, transforming from an ancient imperial palace into today’s city. The ever-changing urban landscape implies the need for a continual dialogue between old and new, especially considering the efforts made throughout history to develop a new image of the city. By analysing three examples—Milesi Palace from the Baroque period, Bajamonti Palace from the age of Classicism, and Nakić Palace from the Secession period, all national heritage listed buildings, the significance of the urban logic behind their construction, as well as the impact these buildings had on the image of the city, is established. All three buildings are located on the perimeter of the city’s public zone, and in different periods, they established new sets of urban rules, which they hold to this day. By researching their influence on the formation of Split’s urban tissue on their immediate and wider surroundings, their role in the city-building process is defined, thus revealing their impact on the formation of the urbanscape, as well as the relationships between architectural heritage and the city’s transformation.

Abstract:This study examines the potential of urban landscape transformation to generate and develop new heritage and the role of heritage urbanism in an industrial city. It explores whether the changeover of urban heritage districts in Pittsburgh (PA, USA) can give rise to a novel type of urban heritage. Pittsburgh experienced urban development primarily driven by the presence and accessibility of natural resources, rather than favorable geographical conditions: topography characterized by rugged hills, rock formations, rivers, and stream valleys. The integration of the American-style grid within this unique natural environment resulted in intriguing juxtapositions. Consequently, elements such as bridges, viaducts, stairs, tunnels, and historical inclines gained paramount importance in shaping the urban fabric. The city's remaining preserved or transformed urban heritage is protected through historic districts designated by the Department of City Planning, which enforces specific planning and design guidelines. The study employs a multi-faceted approach combining the concepts of historic stratification (urban palimpsest), integrated urban morphology, space syntax (integration analysis), and heritage urbanism. During the personally conducted long-term fieldwork, the selected case studies described herein (historic districts, university campus, and traditional neighborhood) proved to be the most suitable for demonstrating urban heritage formation through urban landscape transformation.

Abstract:Since the debates on the New Heritage Paradigm for Managing Change in 2000s, the polemics on "cultural heritage/urban preservation" vs. "urban development", challenges of integrating contemporary architecture within historic urban area and gaps between theory and practice still occur despite the adopted Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach in 2011. The article provides a research aimed at finding current trends in theory and practice concerning the comprehensive assessment of cultural heritage preservation and urban development practice, critical views on HUL approach and development of new alternative approaches & strategies, including the search of the new forms of urban heritage as contemporary architecture, and the best practices in integration of cultural heritage sites with contemporary architecture within urban area. It contributes to the further researches and discussions on the form, direction and capacity of contemporary architecture integration within historic urban landscape to ensure managing urban changes for sustainable urban development.

Abstract:Urban design needs to respond to urban landscapes with historical contexts, while actively engaging with the place-making process, where the old and new components of a city merge to create new meanings for users. Unlocking the potential of heritage in its everyday context will enhance place identity, and spatial and historic connectivity of the urban landscape. The concept of everyday heritage can be understood as a place and people-led approach towards urban heritage and place-making. This paper examines this approach through a spatial analysis of historic fortification systems in everyday urban landscapes, and suggests that everyday heritage plays an important role in unfolding a place’s potential, which positively influences place-making within urban design.

Abstract:This study addressed problems related to the protection, reconstruction, and revitalisation of modern heritage, particularly the regeneration of mass housing estates built after WWII and facing the contemporary perils of urban decay and deterioration. It presented interdisciplinary research investigating the possibility of extending and complementing the heritage assessment methodology and broadening the scope of the criteria by including mass housing landscape values. Starting with a close reading of the key theoretical positions embedded in the conceptualisation and construction of New Belgrade, we investigated a set of holistic and time-based criteria, followed by contemporary methodologies for landscape quality assessment. The investigation was based on an urban landscape approach to heritage assessment and focuses on the Central Zone of New Belgrade, declared a heritage site in 2021. The interaction of the theoretical underpinnings of modern architecture and urban planning with urban landscape discourse, coupled with historically and theoretically relevant knowledge and data, resulted in an investigation of landscape-based criteria for further mass housing assessment. Finally, we presented the findings of the landscape quality assessment of the transformations of the Central Zone. This perspective could be used to extend the possibilities of this approach in order to 1) tackle the "thickness" of temporality related to (urban) landscapes; 2) rethink and redefine the applied heritage assessment approach; 3) open the assessment procedure to a wider range of stakeholders, particularly nonexperts and the local community; and 4) re-actualise the position and role of experts in the sense of communicating knowledge in a completely new context.

Abstract:Under the influence of rapidly changing global dynamics and urbanization, the unique identities of cities are in danger of being obscured by the monotony of uniform urban landscapes. In this context, emphasizing the critical importance of sustainable landscape planning, this article provides an in-depth perspective on how to preserve and contribute to the unique identities of cities. By considering different urban design approaches and techniques, the paper provides a detailed analysis of how sustainable landscape elements, ranging from natural vegetation conservation to modern stormwater management practices, can be incorporated into the urban landscape in an integrated manner. How these elements can act in synergy with a city's historical heritage, cultural values and ecological dynamics is explained with concrete examples. The findings reveal that sustainable landscape planning not only offers environmental benefits but also contributes to the revitalization of local culture and community pride by strengthening residents' attachment to the city. This also emphasizes the need to develop urban areas sustainably, not only physically but also emotionally and socio-culturally. It is therefore recommended that urban planners, architects and policymakers should adopt sustainable landscape planning approaches to preserve and enhance the distinctive identities of cities.

Abstract:This paper explores the role of urban grassroot movements in the social configuration of contentious heritage and multiple temporalities and political articulations of heritage defense activism. Using the case study method, the paper traces the genealogy of one urban movement in defense of socialist modernist heritage in contemporary Montenegro, shedding light on the process of slow political recognition as opposed to the wide and rampant repertoire of urban contention and socio-cultural appropriation. Focusing on the events following the announcement of the construction of the 12-floor skyscraper (colloquially dubbed "the Monster") in the immediate proximity of the iconic modernist Hotel Podgorica, the paper theorizes the capacity of urban activism in the contemporary post-socialist city to activate heritage dynamics and leverage urban knowledge as a tool of cultural control. Relying on a multi-method approach including participatory observations, interviews, urban and critical discourse analysis, and the archival research, this paper provides a multi-perspectival analysis of the complex interactions between contentious heritage, grassroot movements and political performativity in the post-socialist city. The results shed light on the evolving role of citizenship in urban development, signaling a paradigm shift towards engaged architecture and emancipatory urban activism as mechanisms for mitigating institutional inefficiencies and political performativity.

Abstract:The developments in information technologies have changed the values shared in the urban society and the urban dwellers' profile over time. The projects and applications that will enable the cities to reach the standards of the modern world cities have been compulsory. The concept of urban transformation has been put forward in order to solve the problems that arise in the cities and to increase the quality of life of the urban dwellers. The quality of the social and physical structure determines the quality of life in urban areas. Urban natural and cultural landscape value concepts have a broad context which includes many tangible and intangible components of the cities. Urban landscape values are the strongest factors in determining and influencing the quality of urban life due to their scope. In this study, urban landscape values of today's cities on the basis of changing social, ecological, economic, and cultural norms have been determined by gathering the opinion of 13 experts through Delphi technique. In addition, the possible effects of urban renewal applications on urban landscape values were also determined by the data gathered. At the end of the study, 15 natural and 20 cultural urban landscape values were determined and it was concluded that the urban renewal applications have a direct impact on the natural and cultural landscape values of an urban area. As a result of the study, we identified the perception of natural and cultural urban landscape values in the cities under the influence of globalization in accordance with the purpose of the study and discussed the possible effects of urban transformation practices on natural and cultural urban landscape values in cities with a dynamic structure and in constant interaction with the living society. In addition to creating resources for subsequent similar studies, the present study also presents the urban parameters which must be taken into account in all processes including design, implementation, and monitoring stages together starting from the planning stage of urban transformation practices.

Abstract:The industrial heritage of the city of Belgrade is the focus of this research, which highlights the possibilities of preserving industrial heritage from the perspective of a contemporary context and sustainable development. Guided by theoretical principles on the preservation of cultural and industrial heritage, their values, authenticity and spirit of place, as well as the idea of the necessity of integrating industrial heritage into the contemporary context, this paper aims to examine the possibilities for the preservation of industrial heritage following theoretically established principles, with the introduction of new uses and sustainable solutions. The analysis of the case studies of Belgrade's industrial heritage presented in this paper results from research conducted by the teachers, associates and students of the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. The research focuses on the possibilities of translating the principles of preserving cultural and industrial heritage from their theoretical definition to practical application. The students' conceptual solutions for protection, revitalisation and presentation of the analysed case studies represent the research results. An important aspect of this paper is defining the criteria for valorising students' conceptual solutions, which are aligned with the principles of preserving cultural heritage and establishing sustainable development. The valorisation of students' conceptual solutions through a defined set of criteria indicates real possibilities for the simultaneous preservation of all the values of industrial heritage and its transformation into a social, ecological and economic resource of the contemporary city.

The Historic Urban Landscape approach to urban management: a systematic review

Abstract:In 2011, UNESCO adopted the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) recommendation and called for the application of a landscape approach to ensure the integration of cultural heritage policies and management concerns in the wider goals of sustainable urban development. This paper tracks the genesis of a landscape approach to heritage conservation, and then presents a systematic review of the literature on the HUL. More than 100 publications from 2010 to early 2018 were analysed. The applied methodology combined an inductive categorization method with a deductive data mining method. The objective is to determine whether the academic discussion is addressing the different dimensions of the HUL approach, including the holistic, integrated, and value-based dimensions, and whether it is progressing through time to move from a conceptual to an operational level. Results show that while the discussion is heavily focused on values, the operationalization of a value-based approach is still lacking, as it is not fully contextualized in relation to local heritage discourses and the dynamics of heritage governance. Results also show that many case studies applications are in ‘non-Western’ cities, thus opening the debate about the accountability of a value-based approach in contexts that tend to be dominated by groups with the most political power, and where conservation practices mainly focus on the mobilization of material heritage to foster its economic value. Nevertheless, the transition from international guidelines to contextualized local endeavours and policies remains a challenge to be solved.

Abstract:In the context of modern processes of globalization, the problem of preserving architectural heritage as part of national culture is actualized. At the same time, the need for the final development of historical centers, bringing them to the modern requirements of comfort, accompanied by interference in the historical context, pose the task of developing principles and approaches to combining the “old” and “new”, taking into account the categories of “integrity”, “value”, “authenticity”, “spirit places” (genius loci) of the historical environment of the city and contributing to the continuity of urban development. The purpose of the article is to highlight the current principles and approaches to architectural activity in the current urban environment, as well as to identify the prerequisites for their formation. Based on the methods of historical research of the evolution of theoretical foundations in the field of preservation and development of historical centers of cities, the development of architectural trends of the XX century and architectural and artistic analysis of modern world design practice, the following prerequisites for the formation of modern approaches to the connection of the “old” and ”new” historical environment are identified: the development of theory and practice in the field of preservation of architectural heritage (approval of the categories “monument”, “authenticity”, “value”, “spirit of the place”, “layers of time”, etc.); the development of modernist architecture (the concept of the correspondence of architecture to its time); the development of postmodern architecture (the emergence of a modern approach, appeal to the styles of the past, “stylization”); the development of digital design technologies at the turn of the XX–XXI centuries (new possibilities of shaping, de-constructivism, nonlinear parametric architecture). The following principles of formation of approaches of modern project activity in the historical urban environment are highlighted: subordination to context (environmental approach, “stylization”); subordination of “old” and “new” (conceptual approach or equality of “old” and “new”); independence (contrast of “old” and “new”).

Abstract:The paper aims to present research activities about cultural and built heritage at various scales, from architecture to landscape, highlighting how innovative analysis and design approaches can challenge the current methods and pursue the main scope of increasing heritage resilience. The main scientific focus, heritage, works as a cross-cutting topic that is investigated according to the different disciplinary perspectives. At the same time this issue is able to merge the diverse souls of the research team: history of architecture, geomatics, drawing and survey, restoration, regeneration and design. Major results and findings are discussed throughout a set of case studies. These allowed to develop tools to perform rapid surveys and multilevel readings (stylistic, structural, historical, behavioral, etc.) as well as robust procedures for interventions and recycle at different scales of built heritage. Technologies and procedures are tested and validated on these cases that serve as prototypes. Finally, the paper aims to possibly extend the validated approaches to similar cases in the heritage field. The main research activities, indeed, entail the definition of the fundamental paradigms of resilience for heritage and landscape, against the backdrop of the contemporary techno-cultural revolution.

Abstract:The article considers the problem of open public spaces preserving – such as streets, squares, parks and other elements of the urban structure. The Council of Europe and UNESCO view urban spaces as a part of the city’s cultural landscape, as bearers of its identity and cultural memory, and their preservation as the key to the sustainable development of historic cities and the foundation of democracy. Therefore, the system of open spaces of the city should, according to the recommendations of UNESCO, be considered as a cultural heritage site, an integral part of the cultural landscape of the city. We can talk about the preservation of public urban spaces only when they are part of the network of pedestrian spaces of the city and have the appropriate function. However, defining the boundaries of the historical spatial planning system and the principles of its formation is also a problem. Steady fragments of the spatial planning system of the city, which have certain historical characteristics, are not always preserved as a whole urban development and in some places have the form of individual fragments. Methods of spatial analysis and environmental zoning are used to determine the compositional basis and degree of preservation of the spatial fabric of the city. The method of spatial analysis allows to formalize a complex multilevel pattern of urban fabric of the city, highlighting only the compositional-spatial aspects of perception; to identify the compositional structure of urban spaces. The method of environmental zoning is based on the identification of the most established links in its urban structure, namely - systems of open pedestrian urban spaces, of which the transit spaces (streets) determine the compositional structure and historical "ornament" of the street network, and spaces of stay (squares, intra-quarter spaces) - their social role and content, identity of the city.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the linking of heritage preservation policies and tourism development, specifically in relation to the cultural landscapes. For this purpose, historic ensembles Blagaj, Jajce and Travnik, that have emerged from the integration of cultural and natural elements are discussed, in particular, the existing plans and legislation related to heritage preservation and tourism strategies. Also, the extent to which tourism strategies are oriented toward heritage is measured through analyzed promotional materials and touristic offers. In the conclusion, the potential for tourism development ensuring the sustainability of these historic sites is given in a closing suggestions and remarks.

Abstract:This study explores how cultural landscapes serve as dynamic interfaces between human societies and their environments, reflecting intricate interactions shaped by historical and societal changes. Cultural landscapes, embodying both tangible heritage (e.g., architecture, gardens, and urban spaces) and intangible heritage (e.g., traditions and practices), act as living archives that document the evolution of cultural identities and environmental care. Through the lens of historical analysis and case studies, including that of the legacy of the Roman Empire, this research examines the transformative impacts of political, economic, social, and cultural shifts on these landscapes. Methods include a comparative analysis of historical data and contemporary landscape assessments, used to understand how these spaces adapt to and reflect societal changes. The findings highlight the importance of preserving cultural landscapes for their educational and aesthetic value, ecological sustainability, and their role in maintaining historical continuity. The study underscores the need for integrating historical insights into contemporary landscape preservation and urban design to keep these spaces relevant for future generations. This research contributes to our understanding of the deep-seated connection between past civilizations and modern cultural identities through the stewardship of cultural landscapes.

Abstract:The methodological approach of the study proposes an innovative yet adaptive way to define and preserve heritage sites and their elements. In the case study, the proposed methodology guides the design/planning research of heritage sites by linking the perceptual behaviour with the information of the built environment. Visibility is the tool to measure the level of exposure of specific urban elements from a particular perspective. While isovist analyses define visibility in the built environment, fields of view from the periphery of heritage sites are applied to calculate visible or invisible areas by the observer. The purpose of the current study is the evaluation of the identification of the elements to be protected, by modelling both the heritage environment and the heritage elements according to the visibility criteria. For this purpose, I illustrate my approach by using visibility analyses and Space syntax analysis in the case of the Sulukule neighbourhood, the leading renewal project, in Istanbul. This area used to have notably cultural–historical assets–historic land walls, the lifestyle of Roma people—but now the renovation works carried out in the Sulukule case study site have affected the identity of the “visible” and “known” space of the historic quarter.

Abstract:Urban Sprawl, and the fragmentation of the territory associated with it, are factors degrading the peri-urban areas in many European cities. The aim of this research is to investigate the role that Green Infrastructure (GI) and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) can have in redefining peri-urban areas, relating urban and rural landscapes. The case study focuses on the Southern Milan periphery, at the rural-urban transition fringe; the transformation pressures, tendencies, and local activities are approached, and the main problems are juxtaposed to the potentialities, defining simultaneously the site's vulnerability and latent resilience. The elaboration of a research-by-design approach focuses on the refurbishment and interconnection of disused open spaces and abandoned buildings: converting them in favor of a GI and NBS network, through a perspective of Ecosystem Services (ES) enhancement, but also encompassing cultural heritage and multicultural aspects. The overall design demonstrates the possibility of deploying an infiltration strategy, of the rural landscape into the urban fringe. The objective is to articulate a multiscalar methodology and give insights on how a GI network can rebalance urban-rural transitioning spaces and enhance ES, improving the quality of marginal spaces both in environmental and socio-cultural terms.

Abstract:Rapidly increasing urbanization trends at the global level increase the interest in sustainable urban life, while also revealing their effects on ecological balance more clearly. In particular, increasing urban areas create negative effects on ecosystems and quality of life through factors such as increasing air temperatures and changing precipitation patterns. This rapid urbanization process negatively affects the natural ecosystems in urban areas, ecosystems are fragmented, deteriorated and even face the danger of complete extinction. For this reason, the development of planning methods to preserve ecological balance has become a great necessity. These planning approaches are seen as the cornerstones of building sustainable cities. Factors such as spatial diversity and temperature variations play a vital role in understanding ecological processes. In this context, although studies on the design and maintenance of sustainable urban landscapes continue, more effective strategies are needed to ensure the sustainability of these landscapes in the long term. Many innovative ideas regarding urban landscape planning and design have been developed in recent years. However, there has been limited success in applicability of these ideas from a sustainability perspective. Sustainable landscape planning and design helps improve environmental quality and multiply social benefits through the integration of various materials and methods in the creation, construction and management of urban areas. Sustainability-focused approaches to landscape planning and design include restoration and enhancement of natural systems, sustainable management of resources, efficient use of water and energy, and protection of external environmental quality. The aim of this study is to discuss new strategies at the urban level. In this way, it is aimed to take ecosystem protection measures in urban areas, create livable environments and achieve sustainability goals more effectively.
