Abstract:A recent project to produce a much belated English translation of Lucien Tesnière’s Éléments de syntaxe structurale has provided the opportunity for an in depth look at Tesnière’s theory of syntax. This contribution examines a few aspects of Tesnière’s work through the lens of modern syntactic theory. Tesnière’s understandings of constituents and phrases, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, gapping, right node raising, propositional infinitives, and exocentric structures are all briefly considered. Concerning some of these areas, we see that Tesnière was visionary with his analysis, whereas in other areas, modern syntactic theory now rejects his account. Of particular interest is the fact that Tesnière’s theory was not entirely dependency-based. His account of transfer (Fr. translation) acknowledged exocentric structures, which means his system was also employing constituency. In this regard, one can, surprisingly, classify Tesnière’s theory as a hybrid dependency-constituency grammar.

Abstract:This article discusses the stemma,valency and dependency based on Tesniere(1959),which consist of the fundamental elements of Structural syntax.Considering the importance of the syntax for natural language processing,the theory is also investigated from the viewpoints of formalization and parsing.The author concludes that structural syntax of Tesniere is an analyzing-oriented and semantic-driven theory.The basic property makes the theory into an important and practical means in language teaching and computational linguistics.

Abstract:This is the first book to bring together the fields of theoretical and empirical studies in syntax on the one hand and the methodology of quantitative linguistics on the other hand. An introduction into the aims and methods of the quantitative approach to linguistics in general and to syntax in particular prepares the reader for the following chapters, which inform about measurement and data acquisition methods and the most common mathematical models for the analysis of syntactic and syntagmatic material. Various examples illustrate how these models are applied and show the corresponding results.

Abstract:Quantitative linguistics (QL) is a discipline of linguistics, that, using real texts, studies languages with quantitative mathematical approaches, aiming to precisely describe and explain, with a system of mathematical laws, the operation and development of language systems.Later in this review, we will address the relationship between QL and computational linguistics.Quantitative Syntax Analysis is a recent work on QL by Reinhard K öhler that not only provides a comprehensive introduction to the work of QL on the syntactic level, but also sketches the theoretical grounds, the research paradigm, and the ultimate goals of quantitative linguistics in general.

Interface between lexicon and syntax:A perspective of case

Abstract:Structural case connects lexicon downward and syntax upward.Semantic case and θ role also connect lexicon downward,but they stop at the D structure where transformations are undergone before they reach syntax.The Abstract Case in the early GB stage is the first abstraction of the structural case,the second occurring at the MP stage.Unlike semantic case,θ role and the structural case which function upward,the two Abstract Cases both function downward and motivate transformations,but neither reaches the bottom level,i.e.lexicon.The special status of the structural case is caused by the intermediate degree of abstractness between the two semantic cases and the two Abstract Cases,between lexicon and syntax,and between semantics and grammar.

Abstract:The mode of thinking and the form of language are in dialectical unity.The former determines the latter and latter reflects the former.English and Chinese,which belong to two entirely different language families,have vast differences in the way of expressions.The English-speaking people value the formal relationship of different parts in an entity.Such a mode of thinking determines the predominant hypotaxis feature of the English sentence structure.While the Chinese lay emphasis on the time sequence and logic in which an event evolves,resulting in the parataxis feature of the Chinese sentence structure.Study of the Chinese syntactic structure from a contrastive approach will help improve the quality of translation.
Syntactic Complexity in English As a Lingua Franca Academic Writing

Abstract:This study complements previous research on linguistic features of English as a lingua franca (ELF) from a syntactic complexity perspective. Specifically, the present study seeks to find out how ELF users express meaning relations in research articles using different syntactic structures. The same syntactic phenomena are also analyzed in comparable texts written in American English (AmE) to see in which way ELF writing is shaping research writing in English. Our findings show that the values of nine indices from four syntactic complexity dimensions in ELF research articles are significantly different from those in comparable AmE research articles. ELF authors use longer sentences to improve communication efficiency, and more coordinate phrases and complex nominals to enhance clarity and to increase explicitness. In addition, considering phrasal complexity, ELF research articles show greater reliance on nominal phrases in comparison to AmE articles. In other words, the convention of a nominal style is valued in ELF academic written discourse. These features of syntactic complexity illustrate writers’ handling of two competing goals, explicitness and conciseness, in the ELF academic writing. This study is significant in that it offers insights to the description of the emerging use of ELF in academic written discourse.
