Abstract:Apparently , both semantics and pragmatics appear to deal with the question of meaning but differ in the way they consider the type of meaning. On the one hand , semantics is often employed to account for the truth – condition of an utterance in the abstraction from the context in which this utterance occurs , as it plays an important role in determining the truth – conditional meaning on basis of the formal elements constituting this utterance ( Blakemore , 1987 : 11 ).That is , semantics is concerned with ‘‘ what does x mean ’’ as Leech (1983:6) puts it . On the other hand , pragmatics is concerned with those aspects of meaning attributed to a user of language , or as Leech(ibid.) terms it , ‘‘ what did you mean by x ’’ . Speech acts are considered as a kind of pragmatic meaning . They characterize utterances in terms of what they do- their illocution – rather than what they literally say – their locution . Speech act theory does not study the structure of language but its function , the structure being only the vehicle to express the function (meaning) . This paper aims to give a thorough and comprehensive picture of the semantics and pragmatics of speech acts and their realizations in English and Arabic . The paper also aims to look into some problems encountered by translation Arab students in English / Arabic translation .

Abstract:Our basic assumption is as follows: natural language should be treated by theoretical linguistics mainly as a device ensuring the transmission of information, i.e. from the viewpoint of its communicative, or referential, function. Then language could be described as a transformer ‘meanings ⇔ ⇔ texts’; and, if so, one of the most important tools of linguistic analysis and description should be — for a pure linguist, in contradistinction to a psycholinguist, brain psychologist or learning theorist — models of the ‘Meaning ⇔ Text’ type.

Abstract:We characterize the meaning of words with language-independent numerical fingerprints, through a mathematical analysis of recurring patterns in texts. Approximating texts by Markov processes on a long-range time scale, we are able to extract topics, discover synonyms, and sketch semantic fields from a particular document of moderate length, without consulting external knowledge-base or thesaurus. Our Markov semantic model allows us to represent each topical concept by a low-dimensional vector, interpretable as algebraic invariants in succinct statistical operations on the document, targeting local environments of individual words. These language-independent semantic representations enable a robot reader to both understand short texts in a given language (automated question-answering) and match medium-length texts across different languages (automated word translation). Our semantic fingerprints quantify local meaning of words in 14 representative languages across five major language families, suggesting a universal and cost-effective mechanism by which human languages are processed at the semantic level. Abstract:Semantics, the study of meaning, is central to research in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and many other fields connected to Artificial Intelligence. Nevertheless, how semantics is understood in NLP ranges from traditional, formal linguistic definitions based on logic and the principle of compositionality to more applied notions based on grounding meaning in real-world objects and real-time interaction. “Semantic” methods may additionally strive for meaningful representation of language that integrates broader aspects of human cognition and embodied experience, calling into question how adequate a representation of meaning based on linguistic signal alone is for current research agendas. We review the state of computational semantics in NLP and investigate how different lines of inquiry reflect distinct understandings of semantics and prioritize different layers of linguistic meaning. In conclusion, we identify several important goals of the field and describe how current research addresses them.

Abstract:Computers understand very little of the meaning of human language. This profoundly limits our ability to give instructions to computers, the ability of computers to explain their actions to us, and the ability of computers to analyse and process text. Vector space models (VSMs) of semantics are beginning to address these limits. This paper surveys the use of VSMs for semantic processing of text. We organize the literature on VSMs according to the structure of the matrix in a VSM. There are currently three broad classes of VSMs, based on term-document, word-context, and pair-pattern matrices, yielding three classes of applications. We survey a broad range of applications in these three categories and we take a detailed look at a specific open source project in each category. Our goal in this survey is to show the breadth of applications of VSMs for semantics, to provide a new perspective on VSMs for those who are already familiar with the area, and to provide pointers into the literature for those who are less familiar with the field.

In particular, we introduce and study explanation semantics associating with each accepted argument a set of such explanation arguments. We introduce various principles for explanation semantics for abstract argumentation, and list various relations among them. Then, we introduce explanation semantics based on defence graphs, and show which principles they satisfy.

Abstract:This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book expresses that with respect to the semantic/pragmatic border war, the key issue of formulating a semantic theory of quotation is to characterize the semantic content of quotation. It discusses some theoretical and philosophical implications. The book is based on two frameworks of academic analysis. One pertains to the semantic theory in general and the other is related to the semantic account of quotation. It elaborates on the perception of quotation as both representational and metarepresentational. On the Computation of Meaning, Language Models and Incomprehensible Horrors

Abstract:We integrate foundational theories of meaning with a mathematical formalism of artificial general intelligence (AGI) to offer a comprehensive mechanistic explanation of meaning, communication, and symbol emergence. This synthesis holds significance for both AGI and broader debates concerning the nature of language, as it unifies pragmatics, logical truth conditional semantics, Peircean semiotics, and a computable model of enactive cognition, addressing phenomena that have traditionally evaded mechanistic explanation. By examining the conditions under which a machine can generate meaningful utterances or comprehend human meaning, we establish that the current generation of language models do not possess the same understanding of meaning as humans nor intend any meaning that we might attribute to their responses. To address this, we propose simulating human feelings and optimising models to construct weak representations. Our findings shed light on the relationship between meaning and intelligence, and how we can build machines that comprehend and intend meaning.

Abstract:The present investigation is an attempt to investigate how the unique linguistic profile of different text types can be reflected in their respective entropy characteristics. With samples from the Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin Chinese and the Freiburg-Brown corpus of American English, the research investigates entropy performances in two dimensions: the relative entropy of words and their partof- speech (POS) on different sentential positions, and entropy of aspect markers. Our research yields the following results: First, it shows a strikingly similar distribution pattern in Chinese and English concerning the relative entropy of wordforms and POS-forms on different sentential positions. The relative entropy of word-forms in descending order yields: news > essays > official > academic > fiction, and the POS-forms yields: fiction > essays > news > academic > official. The relative entropy of POS-forms may be a more reliable indicator of syntactical differences, which helps to distinguish dichotomous 'narrative vs. expository' text types in both Chinese and English. Second, there exists a cross-linguistic difference concerning entropy of aspect markers, namely, Chinese displays higher relative entropy than English. This indicates that aspect-marking in terms of variation is more prominent in Chinese grammar than in English. The 'narrative vs. expository distinction' is also identified by entropy of aspect markers in both Chinese and English, though more obviously in Chinese.

Abstract:While a much investigated concept because of its importance in shaping human discourse, modality has still not been given an agreed understanding. Using authentic Chinese court judgments in Hong Kong, this paper aims to unravel the complexity of modality as exemplified in its usage in the legal domain. It examines formal, semantic, and functional approaches to modality, showing their weaknesses in identifying and explaining modality in legal discourse. It proposes a socio-semiotic approach as an alternative for giving us a better understanding of modality in respect of its meaning and function in our language as a sign system.

Abstract:The contents and topologies of inter-document linkages, such as citations and references among scientific literature, have received increasing research interests in recent years. Some technologies have been fully studied and utilized upon this meaningful information to improve the organization, analysis and evaluation of scientific digital libraries. In this paper, we present a CiteSeer-like system to access scientific papers in computer science discipline by reference linking technique. Moreover, implicit semantics behind reference indices are mined and organized to improve accessibility of scientific papers. In order to model scientific literature and their interlinked relationships, we develop a domain-specific ontology to analyze contents and citation anchor context of scientific papers. Compared with abstract of a specific paper written by authors themselves, we introduce an automatic summary generation algorithm to create objective descriptions from other scholars’ perspectives based on the ontology. Semantic queries can also be asked to discover interesting patterns in scientific libraries in order to provide a comprehensive and meaningful guidance for users.
Formal and semantic features of abstracts to modern Ukrainian linguistics books

Abstract:The aim of the research is to find out the formal and semantic features of abstracts to modern books on linguistics. The following tasks were performed to achieve this aim: to characterize the compositional and information structure, as well as linguistic and stylistic means of abstracts; to find out factors influencing the choice of form and content of the secondary document. Descriptive, comparative, bibliographic, bibliographic-functional methods, partly structural-typological, as well as social-communication-informational and documentary approaches were used. The scientific novelty of the research is that for the first time the texts of abstracts to scientific and popular science books on linguistics were analyzed comprehensively, in the unity of form and content. The material of the research in a specific academic field made it possible to consider the abstracts objectively, not in general, and to illustrate their features through examples. As the results of the study, it was found that abstracts to scientific publications can be marked, unmarked and mixed according to the structural and compositional features. The markers ensure coherence of the text, they organize and structure it. Unmarked abstracts inform about the publication in any form, highlighting the same information elements of the book’s content (novelty of the material, aspects of the study, its source base, results, etc.). A typical abstract to monographs on linguistics is an indicative two-paragraph text, which is organized with the help of markers and provides information about the thematic and semantic features of the specialist work of writing. The choice of the form and content of the abstract depends on the type of the primary document and on the type of the abstract by functional purpose. Abstracts to scientific publications are objective and moderate, while abstracts to popular science books are characterized by expressiveness, imagery, richness of linguistic and stylistic means.

Abstract:Along with the springing up of the semantics-empowered communication (SemCom) research, it is now witnessing an unprecedentedly growing interest towards a wide range of aspects (e.g., theories, applications, metrics and implementations) in both academia and industry. In this work, we primarily aim to provide a comprehensive survey on both the background and research taxonomy, as well as a detailed technical tutorial. Specifically, we start by reviewing the literature and answering the "what" and "why" questions in semantic transmissions. Afterwards, we present the ecosystems of SemCom, including history, theories, metrics, datasets and toolkits, on top of which the taxonomy for research directions is presented. Furthermore, we propose to categorize the critical enabling techniques by explicit and implicit reasoning-based methods, and elaborate on how they evolve and contribute to modern content & channel semantics-empowered communications. Besides reviewing and summarizing the latest efforts in SemCom, we discuss the relations with other communication levels (e.g., conventional communications) from a holistic and unified viewpoint. Subsequently, in order to facilitate future developments and industrial applications, we also highlight advanced practical techniques for boosting semantic accuracy, robustness, and large-scale scalability, just to mention a few. Finally, we discuss the technical challenges that shed light on future research opportunities.
