Abstract:Quantitative linguistics (QL) is a discipline of linguistics, that, using real texts, studies languages with quantitative mathematical approaches, aiming to precisely describe and explain, with a system of mathematical laws, the operation and development of language systems.Later in this review, we will address the relationship between QL and computational linguistics.Quantitative Syntax Analysis is a recent work on QL by Reinhard K öhler that not only provides a comprehensive introduction to the work of QL on the syntactic level, but also sketches the theoretical grounds, the research paradigm, and the ultimate goals of quantitative linguistics in general.

Abstract:Quantitative linguistics concerns itself with the various language phenomena,language structures,structural properties,and their interrelations in real-life communicative activities.Through various quantitative techniques,it conducts accurate measurement,observation,simulation,modeling and explanation of these phenomena in order to discover the mathematical laws underlying the language phenomena,reveal the intrinsic reasons for these phenomena,and explore the self-adaptive mechanisms of the language system and the dynamics of language evolution.Quantitative linguistics is a typical combination of natural and social sciences,with distinct interdisciplinary characteristics.These characteristics distinguish quantitative linguistics as the branch of linguistics with the best adherence to the paradigm of modern science.The language laws it discovers contribute to more accurate description and explanation of relevant language phenomena and are vitally important and necessary for the establishment of a type of linguistic theory in the modern scientific sense.As an empirical discipline based on authentic language data,the mode of thinking and research methodology practiced in quantitative linguistics are generally in line with those in other empirical disciplines.The most representative accomplishments of quantitative linguistics are the various language laws concerning the structure and evolution of human languages,which constitute the basis of relevant theories.Synergetic linguistics,an outcome of the application of synergetics to linguistic studies,marks a more advanced stage of the development of quantitative linguistics.Under the theoretical framework of synergetic linguistics,we can integrate the separated language laws into a linguistic theory with greater explanatory capacity.An attempt to solve the equilibrium between various language-related demands in communication,synergetic linguistics is the instantiation and modernization of Zipf's least effort principle.In the foreseeable future,researchers in quantitative linguistics around the world are expected to conduct in-depth studies along the following lines of research:(1)the mechanisms and laws governing how words form sentences;(2)the search for more universal syntactic formalisms for the sake of cross-linguistic verification of various syntactic rules;(3)the synergetic relations between different levels of human languages,with focus placed on syntax;(4)the application of various new methods to more efficient and systematic exploration of the rules governing the structure and evolution of human languages;(5)attempts at applying quantitative facts of syntax to syntactic analysis based on authentic language data;(6)the relationships between quantitative facts of syntax and cognitive processing of sentences;(7)the search for synergetic linguistic models more compatible with empirical facts of cognitive processing of language;(8)the construction of more explanatorily adequate lexical-syntactic synergetic models;and so forth.These issues not only reflect the gaps in the current body of quantitative linguistic research but also indicate possible directions for future research.

Abstract:As one of the most authoritative journals in the field of quantitative linguistics, the Journal of Quantitative Linguistics has just passed its 20th birthday. In this paper, we collect information from the 20 volumes of this journal published so far (1994-2013) to build a corpus, then extract different categories of information using corpus tools. By quantitative analysis of the corpus data, complemented with information extracted from abstract and citation index databases such as Scopus and Web of Knowledge as important references, we aim to explore the objects, aims and methodologies of quantitative linguistics, its focuses and shifts in different periods, representative achievements in the past 20 years, and possible directions for the future. During the process, the role of JQL both in the development of quantitative linguistics and the wider scientific community are located and evaluated with quantitative-based evidence. The findings are that JQL contributes greatly to the development of quantitative linguistics and is in many aspects representative of changes in this field, keeping close pace with trends in the discipline and the ever-evolving characteristics of quantitative linguistics over the years.

Abstract:This is the first book to bring together the fields of theoretical and empirical studies in syntax on the one hand and the methodology of quantitative linguistics on the other hand. An introduction into the aims and methods of the quantitative approach to linguistics in general and to syntax in particular prepares the reader for the following chapters, which inform about measurement and data acquisition methods and the most common mathematical models for the analysis of syntactic and syntagmatic material. Various examples illustrate how these models are applied and show the corresponding results.

Abstract:SUMMARY A comparison of two major German-language monographs on interlinguistics sheds light on the common basis of the discipline and on its two major theoretical orientations, the sociological and the linguistic. Although interlinguistics properly includes the scientific study and systematic improvement of international linguistic communication in general, the creation and use of planned languages (international auxiliary languages) remains its chief object of research. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Ein Vergleich von zwei großen deutschsprachigen Monographien über Interlinguistik beleuchtet die gemeinsamen Grundlagen der Disziplin und ihre zwei wichtigsten theoretischen Richtungen, die soziologische und die linguistische. Abstract:The development of computer technology has not only made significant changes in social life, but also brought great convenience to academic research. With the help of databases, researchers can save a lot of time spent on literature retrieval, and can discover features that cannot be discovered by traditional research through data analysis. However, in the foreign literary circles, the usage of databases hasn't been drawing much attention, thus having produced fewer related achievements. Through a comprehensive analysis of the literary measurement research results, this article clarifies the necessity and feasibility of using measurement methods in foreign literature research. At the same time, it introduces the steps and methods of literary measurement research in detail in conjunction with related research. This article not only helps foreign literary researchers to understand the relationship between data, statistical methods and literary research, but also provides them with specific research paths to promote the output of quantitative research results in foreign literature.

Current Issues in Philology and Pedagogical Linguistics

Abstract:The article is devoted to a review of current trends in modern research in Russian and foreign German studies. The purpose of the article is to describe existing trends in Russian and German studies and current research based on the material of the German language. In the article, German studies is understood in its narrow definition, as a subject area whose sphere of interests exclusively includes research in German language and literature. The material for the analysis was scientific articles in leading Russian and German publications, associations of government agencies, as well as publications of Russian and German research organizations. The rationale for this is the significant advances in scientific research of Russian (Soviet) and German Germanists in the twentieth century. During the study, methods of analysis, synthesis and observation were used. The development trends of Russian and German German studies are determined by the cultural, historical, socio-political, and informational features of the development of modern society. Text, corpus and translation are considered as the main sources of promising trends in German studies for the description and interpretation of the facts of the modern German language in diachrony and synchrony. Text models and text types are substantiated from the perspective of modern discursive practices of the German language community (migration discourse, multimodal discourse, political and populist discourse, valeological discourse, etc.). The results of corpus research are considered as an empirical basis for research in German studies and for the strategy of inductive generalization. Research in the field of translation studies is aimed at fixing and systematizing established translation techniques based on innovative digital technologies.
A Quantitative Investigation of the Genre Development of Modern Chinese Novels.

Abstract:This study mainly investigates the genre development of modern Chinese novels since 1919 from a perspective of quantitative linguistics. We choose the a-index and lambda as our quantitative indicators. Firstly, we test their applicability to distinguish different genres of texts written in Chinese. The results show that both the indicators work, and lambda performs better than the a-index. Then we obtained the data of modern Chinese novels from 1919 to 2015 with regard to lambda. Based on the findings above and the diachronic data, we conclude that the change of the genre characteristics of modern Chinese novels is not significant since 1919.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the diachronic modification of the cinematic vocabulary of the modern German language. The relevance of this study is determined by the insufficient study of the formation and development of German film lexicon in the XXI century, which contributes to new research on this issue in modern linguistics; as well as the need to study the process of formation and evolution of the German language film lexicon to identify linguistic and cultural features of this area of vocabulary.The purpose of the study is to determine the semantic features of the lexical units of the German language, representing the cinematic vocabulary in the framework of the historical development of the language. To achieve this research goal, the following tasks were set and solved: 1) the modern scientific linguistic literature has been studied and analyzed in order to form a theoretical basis for this research problem; 2) the semantic field of cinematography has been considered and the analysis of individual lexical units of German cinematography has been carried out and the modification of lexemes in the context of the historical development of the language in relation to modern trends has been described; 3) the nature of borrowing in the German language of film terms from other languages and the analysis of their structure is made. The article discusses the interpretation and definition of the semantic content of the German language film lexicon. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the grammatical and lexical modification of the German language film terminology based on the diachronic aspect is described for the first time in Russian linguistics, as well as the synchronic correlation of film vocabulary with modern trends is traced. As a result, it was revealed that the semantic group denoting the professions of performing skills in modern German is represented by the word composition of nouns, as a rule, one of which is a verbal noun. The German film language tends to use borrowed synonyms for the original word in communication, the vast majority of these borrowings came from Latin, French and English.

Abstract:This paper presents methodology and trends of linguistic research in the era of big data.We begin with a discussion of the role of linguists in the information society and illustrate the opportunities and challenges linguists are currently facing.After highlighting the significance of authentic data on linguistic research,we argue that language is a complex adaptive system driven by humans.Then,from the perspective of philosophy of science,we introduce the research paradigm of quantitative linguistics through several cases.Finally,we discuss how China's linguistic research will benefit from the data-intensive approach in terms of scientification and internationalization.

Abstract:The method of applying the findings in quantitative study on linguistics to research on text clustering is presented.16 linguistic structures,which distribute distinctively between oral and written Chinese,are investigated based on two sample corpora with size of half million words for each.Test texts represented by using 7 of those linguistic structures are correctly clustered into spoken(similarity=89.84%) and written(similarity=86.93%) classes in a text clustering experiment.The method of representing texts with quantitative characteristics of linguistic structures enhances the interpretability of the results,and is feasible and theoretically and practicably significative in text clustering and text classification.Corpus and statistics are methodologically significant in describing study on Chinese genres,the theoretical foundations of which are also included.

Abstract:Glottometrics, one of the most authoritative journals in quantitative linguistics, has celebrated its 17th anniversary in 2017. In this paper, we conduct a bibliometric study of this journal. By statistical analysis of the basic data in all the 37 volumes published so far (2001-2017), we explore the publication profile, contributors, research content, and citations based on the self-built library and corpora. Results provide a glimpse of development and research status of quantitative linguistics. Suggestions of further improvements for this journal are also proposed.

Abstract:This paper describes the Quantitative Criticism Lab, a collaborative initiative between classicists, quantitative biologists, and computer scientists to apply ideas and methods drawn from the sciences to the study of literature. A core goal of the project is the use of computational biology, natural language processing, and machine learning techniques to investigate authorial style, intertextuality, and related phenomena of literary significance. As a case study in our approach, here we review the use of sequence alignment, a common technique in genomics and computational linguistics, to detect intertextuality in Latin literature. Sequence alignment is distinguished by its ability to find inexact verbal similarities, which makes it ideal for identifying phonetic echoes in large corpora of Latin texts. Although especially suited to Latin, sequence alignment in principle can be extended to many other languages.

Abstract:The Russian visual poetry is a special literary form. Tango with Cows by V. Kamensky is its typical representative. A comparative analysis is conducted concerning the text of the visual poems based on the linguistic data from the STR Tree Bank and the Russian National Corpus. This is an attempt to make a quantitative analysis of the language of visual poems and explore the relationship between the components of poetic language and construction of the visual effect. The comparative analysis of the statistical data is conducted at three levels: the distribution of parts of speech, the syntactic structure, and the semantic collocation. The statistical data showed that the frequency of the noun and the numeral rises. In the syntactic structure with the restrictive relationship the subordinate words are mainly nouns. Finally, the special semantic collocation of visual poems often shows few direct logical relationships. All this tends to create a unique visual effect.

Abstract:The present paper provides scholars with a critical assessment of research into Russian diachronic linguistics and Russian philology carried out by Italian Slavicists over the last thirty years. This article first examines how Italian scholars have understood and engaged with fundamental issues in the history of the Russian language, which have been at the centre of discussion on an international level. It then explores the advances made in Italian research on historical grammar and emphasises the peculiarity of the approach to textual criticism developed by Italian scholars and its relevance to Russian philology. Finally, the paper discusses major Italian contributions regarding specific issues in Russian diachronic linguistics and philology, which reveal innovative solutions to long-standing problems. While further exploration is necessary in several areas, in qualitative terms, the hitherto accomplished research cannot but be positively assessed.
