Abstract:Ernest Gimson was in many ways the archetypal designer of the Arts and Crafts Movement because of his interest in traditional techniques and materials. As an architectural student in London in the 1880s he studied traditional building crafts and acquired hand skills. He and his friends, Ernest and Sidney Barnsley, left London for the south Cotswolds in 1893. They wanted to develop their craft skills within the context of a particular area and vernacular tradition. From about 1900 Gimson employed experienced makers and young local apprentices to make furniture, turned ladderback chairs and metalwork. His workshops ensured the survival of craft traditions through the twentieth century and produced high quality work whose influence is still acknowledged by designers and makers.

Abstract:At the turn of the last century, the Arts and Crafts movement transformed not only how objects looked but also how people looked at objects. It provided a framework for essential issues that are still debated today, such as the conflict between standardization and individuality, or the problem of defining what kind of design most benefits society. As the most industrialized country, Britain was also the first to generate a movement to counter what was seen as the malevolent effects of mass production. Protagonists such as John Ruskin and William Morris championed 'joy in labour' - the moral and spiritual uplift that would come with the revival of making objects by hand. The improvement of working conditions, integration of art into everyday life, and an 'honest' aesthetic resulting from the use of indigenous materials and native traditions were also central to the movement's philosophy. At the end of the 19th century, these Arts and Crafts ideals were appropriated and adapted by the young avant-garde throughout Europe and the United States. With 260 objects - furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and work on paper - from Britain, Ireland, the United States, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Scandinavia and Finland, this is a visually stunning, definitive survey. The book features masterworks by the best-known designers of the period, such as William Morris, M. H. Baillie Scott, Henry Van de Velde, Peter Behrens, Josef Hoffmann, Eliel Saarinen, Gustav Stickley, Greene and Greene and Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as lesser-known examples that have never been displayed before.

Abstract:The home is, for many people, the location for their most intense relationships with visual things. Because they are constructed through the objects we choose, domestic spaces are deeply revealing of a range of cultural issues. How is our interpretation of an object affected by the domestic environment in which it is placed? Why choose a stainless steel teapot over a leopard print one? How do the images hanging on the walls of our homes arrive there? In placing contemporary art in the context of the ‘ordinary’ home, this book embarks on the contentious topic of whether ‘high’ art impacts on ‘ordinary’ people. What is the size and nature of the audience for contemporary art in Britain? Do people really visit more art galleries than attend football matches? What is the significance of the home in relation to such questions? Indeed, what constitutes ‘art’ in the home? This book carefully unpicks these questions as well as the troubled and contentious relationship between the home as a place of comfort and reassurance and the often unsettling and challenging images offered by contemporary art. Abstract:The 19th-century is considered as a crucial epoch in British history, which witnessed profound social upheavals that spanned economic, political, and cultural domains. This paper examines the 19th-century art market through the perspective of Agnew’s Gallery in Britain. The gallery demonstrated precise market forecasting abilities by discerning the tastes of various social classes, reflected in its adept procurement, sponsorship, and copyright acquisitions. Thomas Agnew focused on acquiring watercolor landscapes of the English countryside, while William Agnew expanded the gallery’s inventory by securing aristocratic collections. Furthermore, it highlighted significant shifts in artwork themes and diversified profit strategies within the art market, highlighting the gallery’s pivotal role in adapting to and shaping the evolving landscape of artistic creation and commerce during this era. Simultaneously, William Agnew, as both an art dealer and Member of Parliament, expanded the gallery’s clientele and encouraged middle-class art consumption. By combining cultural, political, and economic influence, he positioned Agnew’s Gallery as a key player in the 19th-century art market, mirroring the impact of Victorian social structures on art and collecting trends. The gallery’s auction and exhibition initiatives provided convenience for the emerging middle class to establish collections and assisted numerous British Indigenous artists, even accommodating the artistic interests of the lower classes. Abstract:This stunning book presents Charlotte Perriand's photographic achievement in its entirety, offering new and valuable insights into the work of this important designer. Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was one of the most innovative furniture and interior designers of the twentieth century, long renowned for the tubular-steel chairs she created with le Corbusier. Her career spanned nearly seventy-five years and included work in her native France as well as in Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe, and today her designs are highly collectable. Recently, several hundred photographic negatives were uncovered in her archives, revealing for the first time the scope of her work as a photographer. In the late 1920s, French interior and furniture designer Charlotte Perriand was at the cusp of her career, just beginning her work as an architect, designer, town planner, and political militant. Starting in 1927, she turned to photography, which was to play a pivotal role in her development as a designer through the pioneering years of the modern movement. Her photographic venture ended in Japan in 1941, when the hope of a better world was shattered by World War II. For Charlotte Perriand, photography was a machine for thinking, taking notes, and stirring emotions, but it was also an instrument of political engagement. Today, her photographs are a revelation, offering unseen glimpses into her creative process and intellectual development. Abstract:In “ Design by Choice” ( 1961), Reyner Banham reflected on the role of architects in the new visual environment of objects. Faced with uncontrollable industrial productions, post-war architects were losing their traditional role of “ total designers”. Banham evoked Le Corbusier’s exercise of “ creative choice” with example of the Esprit Nouveau Pavillon ( 1925). Here, the architect refused to design domestic objects and tried to impose the “background control over the choice of others”. Banham was also interested in Alison and Peter Smithson’s “Art of Inhabitation”, domonstrated by their two exhibitions with two artists, Nigel Henderson and Edouardo Paolozzi. Parallel of Life and Art ( 1953) exhibited the accumulation of unusual images from real life and created an unexpected perception of the exhibition room. In Patio and Pavilion ( 1956), the architects were concerned only with pavilion construction inside the room, and assigned the artists to arrange the objects. It was the artists who completely renewed the space, as if inhabitants personalized inside of the new habitat. The Smithsons were influenced by the Eames House ( 1949) through the media. The photo of the living room of the American furniture designer couple, published several times in the Smithsons’ writings, showed a house not “for living in” but “already lived”, and presented mise-en-scène of an ordinary life from American advertisements or films. The Smithsons also compared the interior of the Eames with that of Le Corbusier. The Eames House was far from the aesthetics of the architect-painter, but closer to that of a “layout man” of cinema. The arrangement of the objects by the Eames looked instantaneous and changeable, unlike the composition in a Purist still life. According to the Smithsons, the attitude of the Eames could be translated into a strategy they called the “ Select and Arrange”, almost similar to their “ Art of Inhabitation”. The “ Select and Arrange” is close to the everyday acts of popular people: “ flower arrangement”, “ furnishing”, or “ apples on a plates” at breakfast. The domestic scene becomes spontaneous arrangement of objects “ without rhetoic” and is completely left to the hands of real inhabitants. The “ Art of Inhabitation” continues to this day : based on the hypothesis that the separation between objects-contained and architecture-container will be more evident, architecture seeks neutrality of plan. However, it is not impossible to bridge this rupture between objects and architecture : Examplary strategies are : Auto- Construction “ without architects” but by inhabitants ; Architects’s Baukunst( art of building) from ready-made elements in industrial catalogs. The art of inhabitant influences the art of architect. Nevertheless, choice and arrangement must remain “ adventurous” beyond functional and aesthetic conventions.

“The Pevsner Way of Seeing”: A paper on contriving the “timelessness” of architectural photography for Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s “Buildings of England” series of books

Abstract:This paper explores the challenges of using a specific photographic style as seen within a series of books about architecture which have been published over the last 70 years and subsequently revised throughout that period. A commercial architectural photographer and academic at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, Martine Hamilton Knight was commissioned to provide the illustrations for Nottinghamshire, one of the recently updated titles in the “Buildings of England” series begun by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner in 1951. In her 30-year career documenting the built environment for the British architectural press, there has always been an emphasis on capturing buildings in their everyday use. The approach required to showcase structures dating from early Norman times to the present day threw up a number of challenges for Hamilton Knight concerned with context and representation. With reference to the historic writings of Walter Benjamin and Roland Barthes, together with contemporary views from photographic critics including Liz Wells, Steve Edwards and architectural specialists including Kate Bush, Tom Picton and Robert Elwall, the author explores what she defines as the “Pevsner Way of Seeing”. With a new body of images prepared using modern photographic methods for a digitally produced print publication, it calls into question the legitimacy of utilising a visual narrative established shortly after World War II. This is set against the parameters of creating a body of images which are not for immediate discard, but instead have an anticipated shelf life in excess of three or four decades, thus requiring them to maintain currency at all times.

Abstract:This 120,000 word monograph, Beholding: Situated Art and the Aesthetics of Reception, is published by Bloomsbury, and includes 9 colour plates and 66 black and white images. Written within the broad remit of the aesthetics of reception, the book proposes a theory of beholding situated art. The book is the first comprehensive monograph to apply reception aesthetics not only to painting, but to contemporary art. As such, it constructs a philosophically informed and transhistorical theory of the distinctive phenomenal encounter at least some situated or in situ art affords, and the beholder’s constitutive role therein. This considers beholding as a process, and one of the key contentions is that situated works perform a locative function, in terms of providing indexical cues as to the position the beholder must adopt in order to place herself in the requisite experiential connection to the work’s meaning. Here, the beholder is allocated a role, namely to complete the incomplete in works that are ‘transitive’ as opposed to ‘intransitive’ (i.e. are completed by the anticipated presence of the spectator). This brings the beholder’s ideational and imaginative capacities into play, often in terms of problematizing the beholder-position. Collectively, the in situ and situated artworks considered are juxtaposed to the Greenbergian notion of the artwork as a self-sufficient, autonomous whole. The book is structured around twelve artworks and twelve theorists – philosophers, art historians and critics – such that each chapter constructs an extended dialogue between artwork and text. This includes works by Masaccio, Titian, Holbein, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Goya, El Lissitzky, Anthony Caro, Agnes Martin, Yoko Ono, Mary Miss and Bruce Nauman. The chapters are thematically grouped into four parts: ‘Sacred Imagery’; ‘Group Portraiture’; ‘Abstraction’; ‘Intermedia’.

Abstract:This paper analyses the graphics of Charlotte Perriand, going from a more technical vision, as in the methodological, right through to the most phenomenological, in the search for a suitable representation for the modern way of living. Both approaches contribute to the final academic learning process with abstract systems that are strictly taken on in order to be able to forsee space and objects in three dimensions. The path from the natural language in her first notes, through to the graphic, more abstract language, demonstrates the level of specificity used by means of different graphic sources. The knowledge of methods used for portrayal sought a continuous experimentation from the very origin of the creative process; the drawing, and this meant that this was part of the crystallisation of the architectural thinking. The complementarity of graphic mechanisms such as the Diedric system, axonometric projections, conical perspectives and even the dappling in the technique of photomontage shows her desire to express not only the detail but also the ‘pathos’ of new architecture. The critical analysis of her graphic collection will demonstrate what the work of this pioneer of modernity meant and how it drove forward the general aim of those who wished to give architecture and furniture a life of emancipation.

Abstract:This paper analyses the working lives of contemporary craft makers 1 in England and their contributions to the country's cultural sector, and reflects on the enabling role of public sector investment in maximising this economic contribution.First, the types of project and role undertaken by contemporary craft makers are investigated, with a focus on makers who adopt portfolio working patterns. Identified trends include role diversification and an increasing embeddedness within creative industry supply chains, with makers increasingly providing services as well as products and working to supply other businesses as well as consumers.Second, the distinctive contribution made by makers working in this way is analysed, and the centrality of craft knowledge, skills and working practices to innovation, user-centred design and the creation of expressive value is asserted. The value of portfolio working as a business strategy is articulated both in terms of enhancing makers' commercial sustainability and creative growth, and of producing significant contributions for industries including architecture and design, tourism and heritage, advertising and events, and film and television.Third, factors influencing makers' successful adoption of portfolio working patterns are identified, with new recognition given to the valuing of creative dynamics between collaborative and solo working, and between different elements of a portfolio practice. Tensions and challenges for portfolio working makers are also elicited, with the need to achieve an appropriate balance between opportunity, income generation and creative focus identified as a critical challenge for many. The influence of public investment in higher education and professional development programmes under the New Labour government is considered, in the context of a changing UK political climate.As craft, design and the wider cultural sector respond to economic, social and political change, the paper provides a timely analysis of shifting patterns of work and creativity in transition to a new era.

Abstract:ON Friday, January 4, the Prince of Wales opened an Exhibition of British Art in Industry at the Royal Academy, Burlington House. It is to remain open until March 9, and has been organised jointly by the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Arts. The chief aim of this large-scale experiment is to show the public that British manufacturers of textiles, glassware, furniture, etc., are alive to the importance of consulting artists, when designing their products. The part played by science in rendering it possible to realise this ambition is not referred to nor perhaps could it be within the limited space available at Burlington House. But the scope of the exhibition is wide, and especially striking is the increasing use made of synthetic resins such as bakelite in the manufacture of a great variety of household things. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., show a new form of this colourless plastic material (called Resin M) which it is claimed actually exhibits the sheen found in certain transparent natural crystals, and which can be carved and shaped into many beautiful objects. The glass exhibit, too, is particularly important and interesting. Then there are sets of furnished rooms of modern design, together with a vast display of fabrics, as well as some beautiful jewellery and metal work.

Abstract:THAT a twelfth edition of Robert Johnson's handbook on the art of retouching has been published is testimony to its excellence and to the fact that progress is constantly being made in the methods and appliances for working up and finishing photographs. The leading professional photographers of the world have so developed their art and their lighting systems that their finished results owe but little to the skill of the retoucher, and their clients are learning to accept the straightforward untouched portrait as a better thing than the old over-retouched ones that former generations demanded. There is, however, stjll a great majority that demands that their likenesses shall be smoothed out of all semblance of their natural selves, whilst the technical equipment of many photographers is unequal to providing what is required without extensive use of the retoucher's skill. There is also a legitimate demand for skilled retouching in commercial and industrial photography. For these purposes this handbook gives full but concise instructions in the difficult art, but, as the writers confess, success depends rather upon intelligent practice than upon following any printed directions. It is mainly a matter of manual skill wisely directed.

Jane Addams and the Hull-House Maps & Papers. A Knowledge-Culture Approach

Abstract:Jane Addams – social researcher, socio-political activist, and Nobel Peace Prize winner – is one of those „women in sociology“ (Honegger/Wobbe 1998) who are seldom remembered today in the history of the discipline. Although Addams’ research and sociopolitical activities shaped academic and public life in Chicago significantly at that time, her work has been overshadowed by the „Men of the Chicago School“ (Deegan 1988) at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Our contribution intends to pay tribute to Jane Addams as a classic figure of problem-oriented social research and is structured as follows: We begin with a brief biographical portrait of Jane Addams (1) and then describe the Hull-House and the Hull- House Maps & Papers in the socio-historical context of the settlement movement (2). In the next step we outline the approach of sociological cultures of knowledge, in order to proceed with a knowledge-culture interpretation of Addams’ work (3). We conclude with a plea for a greater reception of the Maps & Papers and for the recognition of Jane Addams’ pioneering role in sociology, which unfolded beyond the confines of university and non-university research and the later established lines of academic discourse (4).
