Abstract:The paper presents the lateral-loading tests and assessment of three types lightweight shear walls, which are lightweight wood-frame shear walls with ply-bamboo sheathing panels, laminated bamboo (Glubam) frame shear walls with ply-bamboo sheathing panels and wood frame shear walls with OSB sheathing panels, respectively. Research results indicated that wood frame shear walls with ply-bamboo sheathing panels have comparable load and displacement characteristics in addition to capacitates as conventional lightweight wood shear walls, meanwhile, the lightweight laminated bamboo shear walls have similar performance as conventional two-by-four lightweight wood shear walls, with higher initial stiffness and peak load however less ductility. Performance parameters of these shear walls were given as well as the ductile design of such structural elements was discussed. The results obtained herein can promote the application of laminated bamboo-based structures.
Aseismic Performance Tests for a Light Glubam House

Abstract:To study aseismic behavior of a lightweight bamboo frame residential house,shake table tests were conducted using a full-scale model simulating a first floor room unit of a typical two-storey house,with the size of 2.44m multiplied by 3.66m in plane and 2.6m in height.Earthquake-lateral-resistance was provided by glubam shear walls around the perimeter of the model.The test results indicated that the model is in the elastic state and has essentially no visual damage for 0.3g PGA.The tested glubam house could withstand under action of three different seismic ground motions within a range of 0.5g PGA without collapse.The observed damage remained noncritical for 0.5g PGA.Inter-story drift in the first storey was below the limited values in most codes.After shaked with 0.5g PGA,the model was retested under a pushover loading condition and the result showed its sufficient deformability.The tests revealed that the glubam house can meet the requirements of the seismic intensity of 8° described in Chinese aseismic design code.

Abstract:Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is increasingly being utilized in Europe, North America and elsewhere due to its superior mechanical properties and environmental-friendly performance. Considering regions and countries, such as China, those are scarce in structural wood resource but rich in bamboo forest, an idea of introducing bamboo into CLT system has been proposed to form a novel composite material, named as cross-laminated bamboo and timber (CLBT). This paper focuses on the comparison of thermal insulation performance of CLBT and CLT panels. The thermal resistance and transmittance of CLT and CLBT wall specimens were measured by the Guarded Hot Box test. A calculation method provided by ISO standard and a finite element (FE) model were also used to evaluate the thermal resistance of CLT and CLBT panels. Based on the proposed FE model, some parametric analysis was performed through 11 CLBT panels with different compositions, including the layer number of glubam and timber, the thickness of extruded polystyrene and the use of gypsum board and screws. Moreover, the feasibilities of these CLBT panels were evaluated for the application in different climate regions of China and the United States in accordance with the corresponding Chinese and American building energy efficiency standards, respectively. It can be finally concluded that, the development and application of CLBT contributes to achieving the low carbon sustainable features of structures, which is due to the good carbon sequestration ability of its component materials (i.e., timber and bamboo) as well as the good insulation performance of CLBT panels.

Abstract:A fire simulation experiment of a full-scale room unit model was carried out to study the fire safety of lightweight glue-laminated bamboo (glubam) frame buildings. Wooden crib with its quantity determined based on typical fire load intensity for residential buildings was stacked and ignited in the experimental room unit. The test was finished after 1h. Temperature histories of several points on walls and upper floor slab, fire behavior of the over-all structure and the damage to the members were examined. Numerical simulation was conducted using fire-driven fluid dynamics software Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) developed by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The simulated results were compared with the experimental observations, demonstrating that the FDS is a useful tool to provide visual simulation of the experimental testing. Fire design measures using gypsum boards and rock wool insulation suggested for the new bamboo building are found adequate from this research.
The Flexural Behavior of Cross Laminated Bamboo and Timber (CLBT) and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Beams

Abstract:The flexural behavior of cross laminated bamboo and timber (CLBT) and cross laminated timber (CLT) beams are studied to explore the potential of using glued laminated bamboo (glubam) in CLT panels to obtain similar or even better mechanical performance and other constructional and environmental merits. The 4-point bending experiments were conducted for full-scale model CLBT and CLT beams, assisted with using deformation instrumentations including the digital image correlation method (DICM) and conventional methods (LVDT and strain gauges). All the experimental results show that the CLBT beams have the similar even better bending stiffness and capacity than corresponding CLT beams, and the advantage is more significant for beams under in-plane bending condition. Analytical models based on two-dimensional (2D) elasticity theory are also applied to predict the flexural response of CLBT beams. The accuracy of the proposed analytical models can be verified by comparing the results with experimental results. Some parametric studies for CLBT beams with different combination configurations of glubam and wood layers are also conducted to provide several design suggestions to achieve favorite flexural performance for this type of cross laminated bamboo and timber beams.

Abstract:A new type of lightweight shear walls made with a laminated bamboo (glubam) stud frame and ply-bamboo sheathing panels is introduced in this paper. The lateral loading experiments of such shear walls and corresponding similar lightweight wood shear walls with three different panel-frame nailing connections and two thicknesses of sheathing panels were performed, in accordance with international standards. Test results demonstrate that the lightweight glubam shear walls have similar performance as conventional lightweight wood-frame shear walls, with higher initial stiffness and peak load, but less ductility. An increase in nail diameter can improve the load-bearing capacity of the shear walls until the failure mode of panel-frame connection changes from yielding of the nails to pull-through of nails from the ply-bamboo panels. Increased panel thickness can increase the bearing capacity and deformability of the shear walls when the failure pattern of panel-frame connection changes from panel failure to nail yielding. A new uplift hold-down device and improved design of edge studs were used to increase the ductile performance of glubam shear walls. (C) 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:Industrial-produced laminated bamboo panel is a new type of eco-friendly material used for glubam structures in construction industry. This type of panel can be further cold-glued with different orientation combinations to form various types of glubam structural elements and to meet different structural and architectural requirements. The lightweight glubam frame structure is one of the popular forms of glubam structures which can be produced in factory and installed on site with few labor forces and transportation equipment, making it potentially possible to be widely used in urban or rural areas. Like the lightweight wood-frame structures, the governing structural element determining the lateral resistance capacity of lightweight glubam structures is the frame shear wall, as well as that the shear wall’s lateral resistance strength is determined through the metal connections used. Thus, this study is focused on the performance of connection system used in lightweight glubam shear walls made with thick strip ply-bamboo boards, the connection system includes panel-frame nail connections, frame-frame connections and hold-down devices, respectively. Yield moment and curves of nails used in lightweight glubam structures were experimentally obtained according to ASTM F1575 standard. The monotonic and cyclic loading tests of panel-frame connections and frame-frame connections with different nail connectors were performed following ASTM D1761 standard. Mechanical parameters (such as elastic stiffness ke, maximum force Fmax, ultimate displacement Δu) are obtained. Tests of hold-down connection with two different capacities under monotonic and cyclic loading are also presented in this research. A finite element model of lightweight shear wall based on metal connections information is validated through previous research in literature, and is used to predict the performance of lightweight frame shear walls with various combination of connections and studs, to find a suitable type of glubam or timber-glubam hybrid shear wall corresponding to certain load bearing and deformation requirements.

Abstract:Noise pollution has become a worldwide issue, which has a negative effect on human health. The sound reduction index and absorption coefficient of glued laminated bamboo (glubam) and spruce-pine-fir (SPF) were firstly measured in this study by using the impedance tube method. The effect of moisture content on the acoustic performance of these materials was also investigated. Experimental results revealed that for thick-strip glubam and SPF, the higher moisture content, the higher sound reduction index but lower sound absorption coefficient. However, moisture content does not have an obvious effect on acoustic properties of thin-strip glubam. By comparing with other materials, it can be found that glubam and SPF have relatively high normal-incidence transmission loss but low absorption coefficient and noise reduction coefficient. Glubam shows the similar but even better acoustic insulation performance than SPF, which confirms the possibility of using glubam as an alternative of wood materials. Moreover, a finite element model was built up to simulate the measurement of sound transmission loss in an impedance tube. Some parametric studies were then conducted using the finite element model to prove the effectiveness of increasing thickness, using composites and double-layer panels on improving the soundproof performance of materials.
The Study on Light Floor Impact Sound Improvement by Void Slab Applied with Surface Covering Materials

Abstract:The living quality of the Taiwanese citizens keeps rising; the improvement of floor impact sound has being carried out into practical project gradually. The void slab, used to be used in huge span building, is very common in housing building. From reference, the void slab represents the one of the latest architectural facilities, which focuses on the noise improvement for the living quality, by its characteristics of rigidity and lightweight. In order to select an appropriate floor covering material, the experimental investigation based on the standard ISO 140-7 and 140-8 should be carried out to experiment the performance of the bare void slab and the covering materials over the slab for discussing the possibility of material application on the void slab.Therefore, in this study, the noise insulating performance of the void slab through the field experiments in the practical condominium-type housing projects will be tested, and the floor impact sound performance of the selected sample of covering materials (teak wood and carpet) applied on the existing void slab will also be shown in this paper. The results show that the void slab presents good effective performance for heavy floor impact sound, but the void slab should be applied with covering materials to demonstrate efficient improvement toward the light floor impact sound, and the performance varies from materials. The researchers expect that the database could provide designers and constructors the reference of the floor covering materials related to the floor impact sound insulation and reduce the time and the costs issue.

Abstract:The use of timber constructions recently increased. In particular, Cross Laminated Timber floors are often used in multi-story buildings. The development of standardization processes, product testing, design of details and joints, the speed of construction, and the advantages of eco-sustainability are the main reasons why these structures play a paramount role on the international building scene. However, for further developments, it is essential to investigate sound insulation properties, in order to meet the requirements of indoor comfort and comply with current building regulations. This work presents the results obtained by in field measurements developed using different sound sources (tapping machine, impact rubber ball, and airborne dodecahedral speaker) on Cross Laminated Timber floors, changing different sound insulation layering (suspended ceiling and floating floors). Results clearly show that the influence on noise reduction caused by different layering stimulated by diverse noise source is not constant and furthermore that no available analytical model is able to correctly predict Cross Laminated Timber floors acoustic performances.

Abstract:Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a new generation of engineered wood product developed initially in Europe and has been used in North America for various applications. CLT is composed of at least three layers of lumber boards stacked crosswise in orthogonally alternating orientation to the adjacent layers. CLT has been gaining popularity and increasing application areas in the construction industry, such as building systems, mats for construction and temporary road applications as well as temporary bridges. It is especially identified as the prevailing material in modular construction for the future building industry. However, CLT as a relatively new structural material has limited studies related to their durability and long-term performance. Moreover, nondestructive evaluation methods to understand their mechanical behavior after exposure to harsh environment are lacking. This paper contributes to the development of a rapid nondestructive evaluation method to assess the mechanical properties using transverse vibration method and ultrasonic testing. The free vibration response triggered by the impulse excitation is captured using contact accelerometer and non-contact laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The LDV measurement is proven to respond similar to conventional accelerometers but more convenient as a rapid assessment method. While the longitudinal wave speed is measured by ultrasonic testing (UT) in a through-transmission mode, the modulus of elasticity was calculated in terms of measured wave speed. By investigating the different structural states and dimensions of CLT samples, the laboratory and the manufacturing facility, the influences of aging on effective dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE) and damping are shown. The numerical and experimental results indicate the increase in moisture content decreases the fundamental frequency. Therefore, moisture content should be measured in order to examine the coupled effects of moisture content and aging on the fundamental frequency. The damping ratio extracted using half-power bandwidth method is shown as an additional information related to the moisture content. The non-contact transverse vibration method and UT are shown as an efficient nondestructive evaluation method for assessing the CLT structural state right after the manufacturing as a quality assurance method or after their service in field as a diagnostic tool.

Abstract:The behavior of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and reinforced concrete (RC) floors in a multi-story building is investigated in this paper. The load-bearing capacity, fire resistance, and sound insulation characteristics of the floors are the main focus of this research. In order to achieve this goal, a four-story building having RC floors is modeled, analyzed, and designed using the StruSoft FEM-Design software (FEM) following the Eurocodes and Swedish national annex. The building is considered to be in the city of Gävle in Sweden. Then, the RC floors of the building are replaced with the CLT floors, and the same process is done utilizing FEM. The utilization ratios (the ratios of the applied loads to the load-bearing capacities), vertical deflections, weights of the RC and CLT floors, and reaction forces of the buildings are evaluated and compared. The results show that the RC floors meet the deflection requirements well which contributes to the focus on their utilization ratios. The designed RC floors are acceptable from the vertical deflection and utilization ratio perspectives. However, the CLT floors cannot meet the vertical deflection requirements, and thus, need strengthening. The CLT floors are strengthened with supporting timber beams and columns which result in acceptable vertical deflections and utilization ratios. Fire resistance and sound insulation conditions of the RC and CLT floors are assessed by calculations based on the requirements of the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building, and Planning regulations (BBR) as well. The RC floors have the ability to be soundproof and have no difficulties in meeting the fire resistance requirements R60 of BBR. A cross-section is proposed for the CLT floors which can meet the fire resistance requirement R60 and sound insulation requirement C of BBR. The maximum reaction forces of the buildings and total weights of the floors are larger in the case of RC than CLT.

Abstract:Lightweight floor structures, such as timber or hybrid timber floors, face challenges associated with excessive vibrations and elevated levels of low-frequency impact sound. Especially here, accurate prediction of a floor's vibration and acoustic behavior is essential. However, typical laboratory testing of building elements is costly and time-consuming. To reduce costs, in this study, adapted simulations are carried out on two types of hybrid steel-timber floor structures to evaluate vibrations and impact sound. The hybrid elements are made of laminated veneer lumber as the top and bottom layers and a trapezoidal steel component as the web. Vibration measurements are used in combination with Bayesian optimization to efficiently calibrate Finite Element models, which are subsequently utilized to quantify and validate the floor structures regarding vibrations and impact sound. The two types of cross-sections, i.e., closed and open, are investigated and compared. The impact sound pressure level computations reveal promising results in predicting the behavior of the hybrid structures. However, further countermeasures are required to fulfill vibration serviceability requirements.

Abstract:Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) slabs are becoming more widespread in North American construction in large part because of the environmental advantage of lower embodied carbon when compared to concrete and steel slabs. This advantage is significantly reduced by the use of high embodied carbon layers in the mass timber floor assemblies, such as concrete or gypsum screeds, that are used to reduce the direct sound transmission. This paper presents a study on the potential to reduce low-frequency sound transmission in cross-laminated timber floors by means of geometric stiffness. A laser doppler vibrometry (LDV) experiment on two different geometries is presented. One sample has a flat geometry, the other has a folded plate design. The folded plate sample is built with the same CLT panels used on the flat one, but is made out of 12 custom parts assembled into a domical shape. Both samples were installed on a 6 × 7 foot glulam frame, subjected to shaker excitations in the low frequencies on their top side, and the vibration on their bottom sides measured with the LDV. The resulting data is used to calibrate an FEA model, and subsequently study the sound transmission implications of the sample’s boundary conditions and joinery.

Abstract:Due to the lightweight nature of timber, vibration serviceability is a crucial issue in the design of timber floors. The purpose of this study is to investigate how beam–panel connections affect the vibration serviceability of cross-laminated timber (CLT) floors subjected to multi-person loading. Cyclic tests were carried out to determine the mechanical behaviour of steel beam–CLT panel connections with various screws sizes (diameters and lengths). A numerical model of a CLT floor was developed to determine the response to human-induced vibrations with different screw configurations (sizes and spacing). The results showed that the dynamic characteristics of the floor were slightly impacted by the screw size. However, as the spacing between screws reduced, the fundamental natural frequency increased by 4.3% and the vibration dose value (VDV) of the floor decreased by 38.3%. A theoretical model was introduced to predict the fundamental natural frequency of a CLT floor system. In addition, a design method for predicting the vibration serviceability, in terms of VDV, of low-frequency CLT floors was proposed.

Abstract:Timber-based composite floors are gaining ascendancy as potential competitors with mainstream steel-concrete composites due to the increasing emphasis on sustainability in the construction industry. This paper investigates the vibration serviceability performance of an innovative prefabricated timber-steel composite floor module. The floor features a cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel joined to cold-formed steel beams using self-tapping screws as shear connectors. The vibration response of the floor module is simulated through the finite element method considering both modal and transient analyses, and its structural performance is evaluated using criteria specified in international design codes and standards. The results provide insight into the vibration behaviour of steel-timber composite floors in residential applications.
Vibration serviceability of hybrid CLT-steel composite floors based on experimental and numerical investigations using random walk models

Abstract:Cross-laminated timber (CLT) floors often encounter vibration issues when employed in large spans bearing heavy loads, and the enhancement of their vibration performance frequently centres around achieving composite action. This study delves into the effectiveness of hybrid CLT-steel composite floors as potential substitutes for traditional, long-span CLT floors. A parametric model was developed using OpenSeesPy and validated with prior vibration experimental tests on hybrid and pure CLT floors. It was then employed in examining the sensitivities of the floors to various excitation scenarios via an integrated random walk model used to generate random dynamic responses. Two extreme boundary conditions: pinned–pinned and clamped–clamped, were also simulated to investigate the limits of the vibration response of the hybrid composite floor. The chosen metrics for assessment comprised fundamental frequency, vibration dose value, peak acceleration and velocity, response factor, as well as root-mean-square acceleration and velocity. These metrics were also juxtaposed against the predictions put forth by the new Eurocode 5 draft. Though the fundamental frequency of the much-stiffer hybrid composite floor was about thrice that of the bare CLT, the considerably lower damping of the former — about 60 % less, resulted in a comparable acceleration response with the CLT floor. Also, despite a 55% increase in fundamental frequency when the hybrid floor was simulated with clamped supports, the resulting serviceability metrics did not indicate a clear-cut performance improvement over the pinned boundary condition. The results highlight the leading influence of damping rather than bending stiffness and fundamental frequency on the serviceability metrics of hybrid CLT-steel composite floors.

Abstract:Cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings have emerged as an alternative to make more sustainable and resilient cities. However, very few cases of vibration-based monitoring of these buildings have been reported. This paper discusses the variation of the dynamic properties of a 5-story cross-laminated timber (CLT) building through vibration-based monitoring over 23 months. The building combines different construction systems, is relatively slender for its type, and was built in a high seismicity zone. The monitoring strategy included periodic measurements of the dynamic properties during construction, reference measurements with high-sensitivity accelerometers, and 10 months of continuous measurements with low-cost equipment. In addition, continuous measurements allowed the analysis of the dynamic properties during special events associated with wind gusts and moderate-intensity earthquakes. During the construction stage monitoring and reference measurements, up to 5 modal shapes of the building with their respective vibration frequencies and damping ratios were detected. These dynamic properties allowed the calibration of a simplified numerical model of the building. Subsequently, during the continuous monitoring phase of the building, it was observed that the first two translation frequencies varied by up to 8% due to changes in climatic conditions and the moisture content of the timber. Finally, monitoring during a 5.4 M w earthquake showed that vibration frequencies temporarily decreased by up to 15% and returned to their initial value after the seismic event had passed. The results of this research will contribute to the knowledge of the dynamic response of this type of building and the updating of their structural design codes.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Residual Load-Carrying Capacity of Cross-Laminated Timber Walls after Fire

Abstract:Cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels are widely used as structural members applied in a range of modern timber buildings. Changes in the load-carrying capacity of CLT walls after exposure to fire need to be discussed and summarized, but few studies have considered this due to a lack of available measurements and the prohibitive cost of performing the relevant experiments. To investigate the residual load-carrying capacity of CLT walls after fire, the multiple tests including axial compression tests under the ambient condition, standard fire tests and residual load-carrying capacity tests after fire were performed, and a numerical approach was developed in this study. The appropriate constitutive relationship and mechanical properties of timber affected by temperature were adopted, and the corresponding user-defined material subroutine was coded in ABAQUS and verified by typical examples. It was shown that the numerical models could reproduce adequately the failure process and mechanical behavior of the CLT specimens tested. The validated numerical method was used to carry out a parametric prediction that revealed the influence of the number of layers and the combustion time on the residual load-carrying capacity after fire. Moreover, the presented results could serve as a reference for the structural fire safety design of CLT structures.

Abstract:Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is a wood composite that is popular due to its favourable stiffness-to-mass-density ratio and environmental benefits, among other positive attributes. This paper presents the estimation of higher-order modal parameters and their use in the verification and validation of an Equivalent Single-Layer (ESL) CLT model. The eigenvectors, eigenfrequencies, and modal damping ratios of 20 out-of-plane vibration modes were experimentally determined. The experimentally determined eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes were correlated and compared to those derived from a numerical model. The modal damping ratios were compared to damping loss factors derived from the power injection method. A broadband frequency view is also considered, with the comparison of experimental and numerical forced response models. As part of the verification and validation process, a framework of key indices and respective criteria is suggested and discussed in this contribution. Over the course of the paper, an ESL CLT model which derives its properties from a layerwise basis is validated in detail against experimental measurements. The results are intended to be of relevance to both structural and acoustic domains.
