Abstract:This paper presents an overview of SpaceX which is a private limited United States aerospace maker/producer and space transportation service provider company which was founded by Elon Reeve Musk in 2002. The main goal of SpaceX is to reduce the cost of space transportation and in the end enable the colonization of fourth planet in our solar system that is Mars. Since its inception, SpaceX has achieved many significant milestones in space exploration. One of the most notable achievements of SpaceX was the development of reusable rockets and spacecraft, which has greatly reduced the cost of space transportation. SpaceX has also successfully launched and landed multiple rockets, including the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. These rockets have been used to launch satellites into orbit, resupply the International Space Station, and deliver payloads to deep space. In addition, SpaceX has also developed the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which has successfully transported astronauts to and from the ISS that is International Space Station. Looking towards the future, SpaceX has many ambitious plans for space exploration. The company plans to launch the Starship spacecraft, which is designed for deep space missions and has the potential to transport humans to Mars. Abstract:Human spaceflight has historically been managed by government agencies, such as the NASA Twins Study 1 , but new commercial spaceflight opportunities have opened spaceflight to a broader population. In 2021, the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission launched the first-ever all civilian crew to low Earth orbit, which included the youngest American astronaut (age 29), novel in-flight experimental technologies (handheld ultrasound imaging, smartwatch wearables, and immune profiling), ocular alignment measurements, and new protocols for in-depth, multi-omic molecular and cellular profiling. Here we report the primary findings from the 3-day spaceflight mission, which induced a broad range of physiological and stress responses, neurovestibular changes indexed by ocular misalignment, and altered neurocognitive functioning, some of which match long-term spaceflight 2 , but almost all of which did not differ from baseline (pre-flight) after return to Earth. Overall, these preliminary civilian spaceflight data suggest that short-duration missions do not pose a significant health risk, and moreover present a rich opportunity to measure the earliest phases of adaptation to spaceflight in the human body at anatomical, cellular, physiologic, and cognitive levels. Finally, these methods and results lay the foundation for an open, rapidly expanding biomedical database for astronauts 3 , which can inform countermeasure development for both private and government-sponsored space missions.

Abstract:An important engineering achievement was made during the fifth test flight of the SpaceX Starship rocket system, as the Super Heavy booster — responsible for launching the rocket into space — was successfully caught mid-air at the Texas launch pad. After completing its role, the booster separated from the upper stage to reduce weight, allowing Starship to continue its journey. Typically, rocket boosters are either discarded by burning up on re-entry or fall into the ocean, where recovery is challenging and costly. By contrast, the Super Heavy booster is designed to be recovered on land, making reusability far more practical. In the recent test, the booster re-ignited some of its engines to slow its descent and navigated back to the launch site, where it was caught by the launch tower's giant mechanical arms. This approach to recovering the rocket's booster marks a key advancement in developing fully reusable rockets, with the aim of reducing costs and turnaround times for future missions.

Abstract:This study examines the characteristics, composition, and origin of fine particle debris samples collected following the launch of the first Starship orbital test flight, which suggests a new launch pad failure mode previously unknown. Particle shapes, sizes, bulk densities, and VIS/NIR/MIR spectra, of collected fine particle material from Port Isabel, TX, were analyzed and compared to pulverized concrete, Fondag (high temperature concrete), limestone, and sand recovered from the area near the Starship launch pad after this test flight. Raman spectroscopy was also used to determine mineral compositions of each sample. Results suggest that the fine particle material lofted by the Starship launch is consistent with sand derived from the launch site. These results imply that the destruction of the launch pad eroded and lofted material into the air from the underlying sandy, base-layer. From calculations, this lofted material likely remained suspended in the air for minutes following the launch from recirculation, allowing for transport over an extended range. Most of the recovered material was too coarse to be a respiration hazard, as a small mass fraction of the particles (<1%) had diameters of 10 um or less. Video analysis and ballistic models also provide insight into the failure mechanism associated with the launch pad, which was consistent with a high-pressure eruption from the region below the failed launch pad.

Abstract:After decades where human spaceflight missions have been reserved to low Earth orbit, recent years have seen mission proposals and even implemented plans, e.g. with the mission Artemis I, for returning to the lunar surface. SpaceX has published over various media (e.g., its official website, conference presentations, user manual) conceptual information for its reusable Starship to enable human exploration missions to the Martian surface by the end of the decade. The technological and human challenges associated with these plans are daunting. Such a mission at that distance would require excellent system reliability and in-situ-resource utilization on a grand scale, e.g. to produce propellant. The plans contain little details however and have not yet been reviewed concerning their feasibility. In this paper we show significant technological gaps in these plans. Based on estimates and extrapolated data, a mass model as needed to fulfill SpaceX's plans could not be reproduced and the subsequent trajectory optimization showed that the current plans do not yield a return flight opportunity, due to a too large system mass. Furthermore, significant gaps exist in relevant technologies, e.g. power supply for the Martian surface. It is unlikely that these gaps can be closed until the end of the decade. We recommend several remedies, e.g. stronger international participation to distribute technology development and thus improve feasibility. Overall, with the limited information published by SpaceX about its system and mission scenario and extrapolation from us to fill information gaps, we were not able to find a feasible Mars mission scenario using Starship, even when assuming optimal conditions such as 100% recovery rate of crew consumables during flight.

Abstract:Photometric characteristics for all models of Starlink satellites launched to date are reviewed. The Original design that lacked brightness mitigation is the most luminous. SpaceX installed a sunshade on the VisorSat model which reduced its luminosity by a factor of 3. The visor was omitted on Post-VisorSat spacecraft with laser communication which followed, but the company added a reflective layer which resulted in an intermediate brightness between Original and VisorSat. SpaceX is applying advanced brightness mitigation techniques to their Generation 2 Starlink satellites which are larger. The first of these, called Minis, are dimmer than Gen 1 Starlinks despite their greater size. Photometric observations verify that brightness mitigation efforts employed by SpaceX reduce spacecraft luminosity substantially. However, the satellites still have some negative impact on astronomical observations and the very large satellites planned for later in Gen 2 may interfere more seriously.

Abstract:On 3 February 2022, SpaceX launched 49 Starlink satellites, 38 of which unexpectedly de‐orbited. Although this event was attributed to space weather, definitive causality remained elusive because space weather conditions were not extreme. In this study, we identify solar sources of the interplanetary coronal mass ejections that were responsible for the geomagnetic storms around the time of launch of the Starlink satellites and for the first time, investigate their impact on Earth's magnetosphere using magnetohydrodynamic modeling. The model results demonstrate that the satellites were launched into an already disturbed space environment that persisted over several days. However, on performing comparative satellite orbital decay analyses, we find that space weather alone was not responsible but conspired together with a low‐altitude insertion and low satellite mass‐to‐area ratio to precipitate this unusual loss. Our work bridges space weather causality across the Sun–Earth system—with relevance for space‐based human technologies.

Abstract:A main goal of human space exploration is to develop humanity into a multi-planet species where civilization extends beyond planet Earth. Establishing a self-sustaining human presence on Mars is key to achieving this goal. <i>In situ</i> resource utilization (ISRU) on Mars is a critical component to enabling humans on Mars to both establish long-term outposts and become self-reliant. This article focuses on a mission architecture using the SpaceX Starship as cargo and crew vehicles for the journey to Mars. The first Starships flown to Mars will be uncrewed and will provide unprecedented opportunities to deliver ∼100 metric tons of cargo to the martian surface per mission and conduct robotic precursor work to enable a sustained and self-reliant human presence on Mars. We propose that the highest priority activities for early uncrewed Starships include pre-placement of supplies, developing infrastructure, testing of key technologies, and conducting resource prospecting to map and characterize water ice for future ISRU purposes.

Abstract:As of 2020, fewer than 600 individuals have left Earth to experience work and life in space. That number will grow as government-funded and commercial space programs move forward in countries around the globe. There are however major questions about how humans respond to spaceflight at every level, from the whole body to individual organs to specific cells to molecular pathways. Preparing for a future where longer-duration spaceflights are anticipated and people can begin to contemplate space tourism, researchers are studying astronauts to understand how the human system is affected by and adapts to space. Lara Szewczak got a window on this world, speaking with retired astronaut Scott Kelly about his late-blooming interest in science, what he's learned through the NASA Twins Study, and why space vacations might not be for everyone. They were joined by Chris Mason, a lead investigator looking at the 'omics of spaceflight.
