Abstract:A main goal of human space exploration is to develop humanity into a multi-planet species where civilization extends beyond planet Earth. Establishing a self-sustaining human presence on Mars is key to achieving this goal. <i>In situ</i> resource utilization (ISRU) on Mars is a critical component to enabling humans on Mars to both establish long-term outposts and become self-reliant. This article focuses on a mission architecture using the SpaceX Starship as cargo and crew vehicles for the journey to Mars. The first Starships flown to Mars will be uncrewed and will provide unprecedented opportunities to deliver ∼100 metric tons of cargo to the martian surface per mission and conduct robotic precursor work to enable a sustained and self-reliant human presence on Mars. We propose that the highest priority activities for early uncrewed Starships include pre-placement of supplies, developing infrastructure, testing of key technologies, and conducting resource prospecting to map and characterize water ice for future ISRU purposes.

Abstract:The rapid cost growth of flagship space missions has created a crisis for astronomy and planetary science. We have hit the funding wall. For the past 3 decades scientists have not had to think much about how space technology would change within their planning horizon. However, this time around enormous improvements in space infrastructure capabilities and, especially, costs are likely on the 20-year gestation periods for large space telescopes. Commercial space will lower launch and spacecraft costs substantially, enable cost-effective on-orbit servicing, cheap lunar landers and interplanetary cubesats by the early 2020s. A doubling of flagship launch rates is not implausible. On a longer timescale it will enable large structures to be assembled and constructed in space. These developments will change how we plan and design missions.

Abstract:With the progress of SpaceX's Starship system, a fully reusable launch system appears possible in the near future. With this technological advance, a new class of transport missions could become economically feasible: Rocket-propelled transport of passengers and cargo at near-orbital speeds from one point on the Earth to another. This mission type is investigated for two reference vehicles: Starship from SpaceX and the SpaceLiner concept, developed by DLR-SART. For both vehicles, the properties during reentry are assessed and the impact on the descent trajectory is investigated, including parametric studies with regard to the effect of launch heading and crossrange capability. While the SpaceLiner upper stage relies on its high hypersonic L/D to cover the majority of the distance in quasi-stationary flight within the atmosphere, the Starship relies mostly on a ballistic flight path at higher altitudes. The flight within the upper layers of the atmosphere allows the SpaceLiner to change its heading mid-flight through banking maneuvers and thus efficiently curve around populated areas. However, this prolonged flight at high velocities within the upper atmosphere does necessitate active cooling of the leading edges. An exemplary mission from Shanghai to California is optimized for both reference vehicles, with the optimization target being minimal peak heat loads. Due to the Starship's reliance on the ballistic portion of its flight to cover range, the peak heat flux is substantially higher on westward missions, compared to the eastward return flight.

Abstract:Reaching the outer solar system and interstellar space beyond has always been challenging due to the long distances and long travel times. Initial work on planetary gravity assists in the early 1960s by Minovitch and Flandro laid the basis for expanding reachable space with then-existing launch vehicles. Such gravity assists have been key enablers for orbital exploration missions to Mercury (MESSENGER), Jupiter (Galileo, Juno), and Saturn (Cassini-Huygens) by trading higher mass for lower launch energy from Earth ( C 3 ). They have also enabled close passes to the Sun (Parker Solar Probe) and moderately rapid solar system escape, coupled with fast flybys of various planetary-sized bodies: Mariner 10 (Mercury via Venus), Pioneer 10 (escape via Jupiter), Pioneer 11 and Voyager 1 (escape via Jupiter and Saturn), Voyager 2 (escape via Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune: the "Grand Tour"), and New Horizons (escape via Jupiter and Pluto). Two of these missions hold the first and second places for the most energetic launches (New Horizons: C 3 = 157.7502 km 2 /s 2 ; Parker Solar Probe: C 3 = 152.222 km 2 /s 2 ). Disadvantages in using Earth and Venus gravity assists to increase spacecraft injected mass to Jupiter and beyond include the time penalty and the need for a customized propulsion system to provide a deep-space maneuver (DSM). For "timely" transits to Neptune with a large orbiter or rapid solar system escape with an Interstellar Probe, more capable launch vehicles can be enabling by pushing the injected mass versus C 3 curves "to the right." While the most extreme speeds asymptotically away from the Sun (7–8 au/yr) can be achieved with fast Jupiter gravity assists and super-heavy lift launch vehicles (SHLLV) such as the Space Launch System (SLS) surmounted by multiple upper stages, solar system escape speeds larger than those achieved by Voyager 1 are possible with existing and upcoming large commercial launch vehicles. Such vehicles include the Falcon-Heavy, New Glenn, and Vulcan Centaur. Better performance accrues with the fully expendable versions of these vehicles and/or with "refilling" in a low-Earth orbit, with performance versus launch cost as a central trade. Even better performance can be projected with SHLLVs in development, such as the Starship Super Heavy and Long March 9. We discuss some of the possibilities and trades such newer vehicles can enable in the near term for continued – and more distant – exploration of the solar system and beyond.

Abstract:After decades where human spaceflight missions have been reserved to low Earth orbit, recent years have seen mission proposals and even implemented plans, e.g. with the mission Artemis I, for returning to the lunar surface. SpaceX has published over various media (e.g., its official website, conference presentations, user manual) conceptual information for its reusable Starship to enable human exploration missions to the Martian surface by the end of the decade. The technological and human challenges associated with these plans are daunting. Such a mission at that distance would require excellent system reliability and in-situ-resource utilization on a grand scale, e.g. to produce propellant. The plans contain little details however and have not yet been reviewed concerning their feasibility. In this paper we show significant technological gaps in these plans. Based on estimates and extrapolated data, a mass model as needed to fulfill SpaceX's plans could not be reproduced and the subsequent trajectory optimization showed that the current plans do not yield a return flight opportunity, due to a too large system mass. Furthermore, significant gaps exist in relevant technologies, e.g. power supply for the Martian surface. It is unlikely that these gaps can be closed until the end of the decade. We recommend several remedies, e.g. stronger international participation to distribute technology development and thus improve feasibility. Overall, with the limited information published by SpaceX about its system and mission scenario and extrapolation from us to fill information gaps, we were not able to find a feasible Mars mission scenario using Starship, even when assuming optimal conditions such as 100% recovery rate of crew consumables during flight.

Ultrafast transfer of low-mass payloads to Mars and beyond using aerographite solar sails

Abstract:With interstellar mission concepts now being under study by various space agencies and institutions, a feasible and worthy interstellar precursor mission concept will be key to the success of the long shot. Here we investigate interstellar-bound trajectories of solar sails made of the ultra-light material aerographite, known for its low density (0.18 kg m$^{-3}$) and high absorptivity ($\mathcal{A}{\sim}1$), enabling remarkable solar irradiation-based acceleration. Payloads of up to 1 kg can swiftly traverse the solar system and the regions beyond. Our simulations consider various launch scenarios from a polar orbit around the Earth with direct outbound trajectories and Sun diver launches with subsequent outward acceleration. Utilizing the poliastro Python library, we calculate positions, velocities, and accelerations for a 1 kg spacecraft (including 720 g aerographite mass) with 10$^4$ m$^2$ of cross-sectional area, corresponding to a 56 m radius. A direct outward Mars transfer yields 65 km s$^{-1}$ in 26 d. The inward Mars transfer, with a sail deployment at a minimum distance of 0.6 AU, achieves 118 km s$^{-1}$ in 126 d. Transfer times and velocities vary due to the Earth-Mars constellation and initial injection trajectory. The direct interstellar trajectory peaks at 109 km s$^{-1}$, reaching interstellar space in 5.3 yr defined by the heliopause at 120 AU. Alternatively, the initial Sun dive to 0.6 AU provides 148 km s$^{-1}$ of escape velocity, reaching the heliopause in 4.2 yr. Values differ based on the minimum distance to the Sun. Presented concepts enable swift Mars flybys and interstellar space exploration. For delivery missions of sub-kg payloads, the deceleration remains a challenge.

Abstract:An important engineering achievement was made during the fifth test flight of the SpaceX Starship rocket system, as the Super Heavy booster — responsible for launching the rocket into space — was successfully caught mid-air at the Texas launch pad. After completing its role, the booster separated from the upper stage to reduce weight, allowing Starship to continue its journey. Typically, rocket boosters are either discarded by burning up on re-entry or fall into the ocean, where recovery is challenging and costly. By contrast, the Super Heavy booster is designed to be recovered on land, making reusability far more practical. In the recent test, the booster re-ignited some of its engines to slow its descent and navigated back to the launch site, where it was caught by the launch tower's giant mechanical arms. This approach to recovering the rocket's booster marks a key advancement in developing fully reusable rockets, with the aim of reducing costs and turnaround times for future missions.

Abstract:Aerobraking is becoming an efficient technique for the planetary mission.It uses planetary atmo-sphere drag to slow down the spacecraft and achieve the desired orbit,and this technique that allows reduced propellant mass can minimize the cost of the exploration mission and increase the payload capability.This paper describes the features of aerobraking operations and presents four NASA planetary missions having successfully used aerobraking technique.In particular,research progress in aerodynamics and trajectory simulation during aerobraking is reviewed,and the risks and cost analysis associated with aerobraking are summarized.,Focuses in the studies on aerobraking technique are pointed out at the end of paper,and some suggestions about further investigations are also made.

Abstract:Two new interplanetary technologies have advanced in the past decade to the point where they may enable exciting, affordable missions that reach further and faster deep into the outer regions of our solar system: (i) small and capable interplanetary spacecraft and (ii) light-driven sails. Combination of these two technologies could drastically reduce travel times within the solar system. We discuss a new paradigm that involves small and fast moving sailcraft that could enable exploration of distant regions of the solar system much sooner and faster than previously considered. We present some of the exciting science objectives for these miniaturized intelligent space systems that could lead to transformational advancements in the space sciences in the coming decade.

Abstract:As the Reusable Launch Vehicle can reduce the launching cost, and improve the ability of Operationally Responsive Space (ORS), many aerospace powers in the world consider the Reusable Launch Vehicle as a main development tendency of space transportation system. Recently, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX), as the spokesman of private aerospace corporations, has attracted all the world’s attention to the Reusable Launch Vehicle. SpaceX has been developing technologies for rockets’ fully and rapid reusability, and several recovery tests have been conducted on technology-demonstrators and post-mission controlled-descent tests on Falcon 9 rockets’ first stages, both touchdown on the ocean platform and the land. On 22 December 2015, a Falcon 9 FT rocket of SpaceX, carrying 11 Orbcomm communications satellites, lifted off from Cape Canaveral. After cutoff and stage-separation, the Falcon 9s first stage flight back into the atmosphere and pulled off a powered landing on on Landing Zone 1, which is about 10 km far away from the Launch Site of SLC-40, settling to a smooth tail-first touchdown, making it a significant space “first”. After already celebrated a successful booster landing, SpaceX had decided to attempt a landing at sea on this flight despite available margins for a return to land. This decision was prompted by the need to master the landing sequence for sea-based recoveries which will be needed for about half of Falcon 9’s flights when lifting heavy satellites to high-energy orbits. On 8 April 2016, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 FT rocket, carrying CRS-8 Dragon cargo, lifted off from Cape Canaveral. The Falcon 9’s first stage has accomplished the first ever successful returning rocket on the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship (ASDS). This is considered a landmark accomplishment on the road to economical interplanetary and asteroid-to- planet space travel because it enables expensive launch vehicles to be reused. In this paper, based on the experiments of Falcon 9, and analyzing the main projects of the Reusable Launch Vehicle abroad in the past 60 years, the critical technologies will be researched and the results will provide references for the research of new type of space transportation systems.

Abstract:The advances in solar technology and electric propulsion now offer the promise of new, very capable space transport systems that will allow us to effectively explore the solar system. NASA has developed many concepts of space-powered spacecraft with power levels ranging from tens to hundreds of kilowatts for robotic and asteroid-driven missions and Mars. This paper describes two electrical/chemical propulsion concepts developed over the last 5 years and discusses how they could be used to humanize the solar system. A possible sustainable solution for the supply of spacecraft power would be to achieve and utilization nuclear fusion energy. The paper briefly presents some contributions to obtaining nuclear fusion energy as a viable alternative to current energies. For the energy of spacecraft of the future, the combination of photovoltaic energy (obtained from the stars) and that produced by a nuclear reactor on fusion is essential. NASA is developing a strategy to send a crew to Mars by 2030. To achieve this goal, NASA plans to develop the technology for long-haul flights including advanced transportation work and living systems. Among these technologies, Solar Electric Propulsion (PES) has been identified as very effective in moving large masses through interplanetary space. For decades it has been known that missions outside the low Earth's orbit can be made cost-effective by PSA, but yet such space missions have not yet been done because the manufacturing technology is not advanced enough. NASA's recent investments in solar power systems and propulsion systems have now matured so that the 50 kW PSA is already ready to be put on flight missions. It has been demonstrated analytically that these technologies can be resized to systems with the power of several hundred kilowatts.

Abstract:A review is presented of the scientific benefits of rapid (v >= 0.1c) interstellar spaceflight. Significant benefits are identified in the fields of interstellar medium studies, stellar astrophysics, planetary science and astrobiology. In the latter three areas the benefits would be considerably enhanced if the interstellar vehicle is able to decelerate from its interstellar cruise velocity to rest relative to the target system. Although this will greatly complicate the mission architecture, and extend the overall travel time, the scientific benefits are such that this option should be considered seriously in future studies.

Cost-Optimal Laser-Accelerated Lightsails

Abstract:Laser-accelerated lightsails enable new types of missions that are very different from the Breakthrough Starshot mission to the Centauri system that aims to send 1 gram of payload at 0.2 c. The present work widens the mission design space to 0.1 mg to 100 kt payload and 0.0001-0.99 c cruise velocity. Drawing up to 5 GW directly from the grid (to augment power drawn from local energy storage) turns out to be the key to making small missions affordable: It collapses the accelerating laser's capital cost by up to 5 orders of magnitude, enabling new possibilities such as a 10 kg Solar system cubesat that accelerates to 0.001 c (63 au/yr) using a 77 m sail and \$610M laser, costing \$58M worth of energy per mission. Trajectory equations describing lightsail acceleration are derived in closed form and used instead of numerical integration. Consequently, analyses have progressed from single point designs to whole performance maps comprised of thousands of cost-optimized point designs. The performance maps reveal qualitatively different regimes characterized by the particular constraint that drives cost, and these driving constraints change depending on mission payload mass and cruise velocity. The performance maps also reveal a family of cost-optimal missions that accelerate at Earth gravity: The heaviest such mission is a 7.4 km diameter 100 kt vessel (equivalent to 225 International Space Stations) that is accelerated for 21 days to achieve 0.07 c, reaching the Centauri system within a human lifetime. While unthinkable at this time, the required 380 PW peak radiated power (twice terrestrial insolation) might be generated by space solar power or fusion within a few centuries. Regardless, it is now possible to contemplate such missions using laser-accelerated lightsails.

Abstract:Seventy-five billion low-mass stars in our galaxy host at least one small planet in their habitable zone (HZ). The stellar ultraviolet (UV) radiation received by the planets is strong and highly variable, and has consequences for atmospheric loss, composition, and habitability. SPARCS is a NASA-funded mission to characterize the quiescent and flare UV emission from low-mass stars, by observing 10 to 20 low-mass stars, over timescales of days, simultaneously in two UV bands: 153-171 nm and 260-300 nm. SPARCS Sun-synchronous terminator orbit allows for long periods of uninterrupted observations, reaching 10s of days for some targets. The payload consists of a 10 cm-class telescope, a dichroic element, UV detectors and associated electronics, a thermal control system, and an on-board processor. The payload is hosted on a Blue Canyon Technologies 6U CubeSat. SPARCS hosts several technology innovations that have broad applicability to other missions. The payload demonstrates the use of "2D-doped" (i.e., delta- and superlattice-doped) detectors and detector-integrated metal dielectric filters in space. This detector technology provides ~5x larger quantum efficiency than NASA's GALEX detectors. In addition, SPARCS' payload processor provides dynamic exposure control, automatically adjusting the exposure time to avoid flare saturation and to time-resolve the strongest stellar flares. A simple passive cooling system maintains the detector temperature under 238K to minimize dark current. The spacecraft bus provides pointing jitter smaller than 6", minimizing the impact of flat-field errors, dark current, and read-noise. All these elements enable competitive astrophysics science within a CubeSat platform. SPARCS is currently in the final design and fabrication phase (Phase C in the NASA context). It will be launched in 2024, for a primary science mission of one year.

Improving science yield for NASA Swift with automated planning technologies

Abstract:The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer is a uniquely capable mission, with three on-board instruments and rapid slewing capabilities. It serves as a fast-response satellite observatory for everything from gravitational-wave counterpart searches to cometary science. Swift averages 125 different observations per day, and is consistently over-subscribed, responding to about one-hundred Target of Oportunity (ToO) requests per month from the general astrophysics community, as well as co-pointing and follow-up agreements with many other observatories. Since launch in 2004, the demands put on the spacecraft have grown consistently in terms of number and type of targets as well as schedule complexity. To facilitate this growth, various scheduling tools and helper technologies have been built by the Swift team to continue improving the scientific yield of the Swift mission. However, these tools have been used only to assist humans in exploring the local pareto surface and for fixing constraint violations. Because of the computational complexity of the scheduling task, no automation tool has been able to produce a plan of equal or higher quality than that produced by a well-trained human, given the necessary time constraints. In this proceeding we formalize the Swift Scheduling Problem as a dynamic fuzzy Constraint Satisfaction Problem (DF-CSP) and explore the global solution space. We detail here several approaches towards achieving the goal of surpassing human quality schedules using classical optimization and algorithmic techniques, as well as machine learning and recurrent neural network (RNN) methods. We then briefly discuss the increased scientific yield and benefit to the wider astrophysics community that would result from the further development and adoption of these technologies.

Abstract:Current spacecraft mass are mostly fuel, this is dictated by the lack of fueling stations in space and also by the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation which defines the mass ratio needed to escape earths gravity. The Tsiolkovsky rocket equation gives a relationship between the mass ratio and the final velocity in multiples of the exhaust speed, and dictates a high mass ratio for current exhaust speeds. A relativistic motor exchanging momentum and energy with the electromagnetic field may mitigate such considerations, enabling efficient interplanetary travel. In this paper we will discuss the advantages and challenges of this novel mover for space transportation.

Abstract:A close partnership between people and partially autonomous machines has enabled decades of space exploration. But to further expand our horizons, our systems must become more capable. Increasing the nature and degree of autonomy - allowing our systems to make and act on their own decisions as directed by mission teams - enables new science capabilities and enhances science return. The 2011 Planetary Science Decadal Survey (PSDS) and on-going pre-Decadal mission studies have identified increased autonomy as a core technology required for future missions. However, even as scientific discovery has necessitated the development of autonomous systems and past flight demonstrations have been successful, institutional barriers have limited its maturation and infusion on existing planetary missions. Consequently, the authors and endorsers of this paper recommend that new programmatic pathways be developed to infuse autonomy, infrastructure for support autonomous systems be invested in, new practices be adopted, and the cost-saving value of autonomy for operations be studied.

Abstract:In recent years, driven by space X and other commercial companies, the requirement of low cost and fast response to transport, reusable launch vehicle technology is attracting the world's attention. Aerospace agencies in various countries have stepped up research and made some progress in the related technologies of reusable launch vehicles. The development of reusable launch vehicle has become an important direction of space development in the future. First, the development status of reusable vehicles, the Space Shuttle Mode, the Falcon-9 Mode, the Launch Mode on board, and the Airborne Aircraft Mode, are introduced. Second, the structure design, the propulsion system, the recycling scheme, the thermal protection system and the launch costs of each mode is analyzed. Third, some related development suggestions are put forward in terms of the carrier configuration, the design of recycling scheme, the choose of propulsion system and the thermal protection system for reusable launch vehicle designer.
