Abstract:The design of a Martian autonomous rotary wing vehicle (MARV) is described. MARV is a 50-kg gross takeoff mass; coaxial helicopter designed for Mars exploration. Powered by a fuel cell system, it carries a payload of 10.8 kg over a range of 25 km with an endurance of 39 min including hover capability for 1 min. MARV is designed in response to the Request For Proposal from NASA/Sikorsky for the Year 2000 American Helicopter Society student design competition. The design covers aerodynamic and structural design of rotor blades, vehicle power plant, fuselage and landing gear, control system, transmission, and vehicle lander communications. A detailed mechanism for autonomous deployment of the vehicle from the lander is also described. This preliminary design study indicates that controlled vertical flight on Mars is feasible with existing technology.

Abstract:The harsh environment on the lunar surface presents unique technological challenges for space exploration. This paper presents research on the design and development of the Tele- scope-deployment High-vacuum teleOperated Rover (THOR), currently being built and tested in the Lunar and Airless Bodies Simulator (LABS) facility at the University of Colorado Boulder. This rover is fabricated entirely out of cost-effective commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and materials. THOR can potentially survive for more than one simulated year in conditions similar to that of the lunar environment, demonstrating the successful initial results of a first phase research study on material and electronic survivability in an extreme environment such as the Moon.

Abstract:Last month's return to Earth of China's lunar lander Chang'e-6 with samples from the far side of the Moon is a reminder that there are "firsts" in robotic space exploration still to be achieved. Unfortunately, this year has seen a major setback for the prospects of an even more extensive plan to collect samples from Mars. In April, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) made clear that the ballooning cost for the US Mars Sample Return mission to around $11 billion was too much and the 2040 return date was too distant. NASA has been told to look for ideas to lower costs and shorten the timeline. Shock and anger are palpable in the astronomy community.

Abstract:Watering the Moon About a year ago, a spent upper stage of an Atlas rocket was deliberately crashed into a crater at the south pole of the Moon, ejecting a plume of debris, dust, and vapor. The goal of this event, the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) experiment, was to search for water and other volatiles in the soil of one of the coldest places on the Moon: the permanently shadowed region within the Cabeus crater. Using ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectroscopy data from accompanying craft, Colaprete et al. (p. 463 ; see the news story by Kerr ; see the cover) found evidence for the presence of water and other volatiles within the ejecta cloud. Schultz et al. (p. 468 ) monitored the different stages of the impact and the resulting plume. Gladstone et al. (p. 472 ), using an ultraviolet spectrograph onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), detected H 2 , CO, Ca, Hg, and Mg in the impact plume, and Hayne et al. (p. 477 ) measured the thermal signature of the impact and discovered that it had heated a 30 to 200 square-meter region from ∼40 kelvin to at least 950 kelvin. Paige et al. (p. 479) mapped cryogenic zones predictive of volatile entrapment, and Mitrofanov et al. (p. 483 ) used LRO instruments to confirm that surface temperatures in the south polar region persist even in sunlight. In all, about 155 kilograms of water vapor was emitted during the impact; meanwhile, the LRO continues to orbit the Moon, sending back a stream of data to help us understand the evolution of its complex surface structures.

Using physics-based simulation towards eliminating empiricism in extraterrestrial terramechanics applications

Abstract:Recently, there has been a surge of international interest in extraterrestrial exploration targeting the Moon, Mars, the moons of Mars, and various asteroids. This contribution discusses how current state-of-the-art Earth-based testing for designing rovers and landers for these missions currently leads to overly optimistic conclusions about the behavior of these devices upon deployment on the targeted celestial bodies. The key misconception is that gravitational offset is necessary during the \textit{terramechanics} testing of rover and lander prototypes on Earth. The body of evidence supporting our argument is tied to a small number of studies conducted during parabolic flights and insights derived from newly revised scaling laws. We argue that what has prevented the community from fully diagnosing the problem at hand is the absence of effective physics-based models capable of simulating terramechanics under low gravity conditions. We developed such a physics-based simulator and utilized it to gauge the mobility of early prototypes of the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), which is slated to depart for the Moon in November 2024. This contribution discusses the results generated by this simulator, how they correlate with physical test results from the NASA-Glenn SLOPE lab, and the fallacy of the gravitational offset in rover and lander testing. The simulator developed is open sourced and made publicly available for unfettered use; it can support principled studies that extend beyond trafficability analysis to provide insights into in-situ resource utilization activities, e.g., digging, bulldozing, and berming in low gravity.

Abstract:A prototype rover carrying an astrobiology payload was developed and deployed at analog field sites to mature generalized system architectures capable of searching for biosignatures in extreme terrain across the Solar System. Specifically, the four-legged Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robot (LEMUR) 3 climbing robot with microspine grippers carried three instruments: a micro-X-ray fluorescence instrument based on the Mars 2020 mission's Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry provided elemental chemistry; a deep-ultraviolet fluorescence instrument based on Mars 2020's Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals mapped organics in bacterial communities on opaque substrates; and a near-infrared acousto-optic tunable filter-based point spectrometer identified minerals and organics in the 1.6-3.6 μm range. The rover also carried a light detection and ranging and a color camera for both science and navigation. Combined, this payload detects astrobiologically important classes of rock components (elements, minerals, and organics) in extreme terrain, which, as demonstrated in this work, can reveal a correlation between textural biosignatures and the organics or elements expected to preserve them in a habitable environment. Across >10 field tests, milestones were achieved in instrument operations, autonomous mobility in extreme terrain, and system integration that can inform future planetary science mission architectures. Contributions include (1) system-level demonstration of mock missions to the vertical exposures of Mars lava tube caves and Mars canyon walls, (2) demonstration of multi-instrument integration into a confocal arrangement with surface scanning capabilities, and (3) demonstration of automated focus stacking algorithms for improved signal-to-noise ratios and reduced operation time.

Abstract:An efficient characterization of scientifically significant locations is essential prior to the return of humans to the Moon. The highest resolution imagery acquired from orbit of south-polar shadowed regions and other relevant locations remains, at best, an order of magnitude larger than the characteristic length of most of the robotic systems to be deployed. This hinders the planning and successful implementation of prospecting missions and poses a high risk for the traverse of robots and humans, diminishing the potential overall scientific and commercial return of any mission. We herein present the design of a lightweight, compact, autonomous, and reusable lunar reconnaissance drone capable of assisting other ground-based robotic assets, and eventually humans, in the characterization and high-resolution mapping ( ∼ 0.1 m/px) of particularly challenging and hard-to-access locations on the lunar surface. The proposed concept consists of two main subsystems: the drone and its service station. With a total combined wet mass of 100 kg, the system is capable of 11 flights without refueling the service station, enabling almost 9 km of accumulated flight distance. The deployment of such a system could significantly impact the efficiency of upcoming exploration missions, increasing the distance covered per day of exploration and significantly reducing the need for recurrent contacts with ground stations on Earth.

Abstract:The exploration and utilization of water resources on the Moon are of substantial global interest. To utilize lunar resources and construct bases, the construction machinery should travel over the lunar surface (which is mainly covered with powdery regolith) and excavate the regolith. However, various technical issues should be resolved to achieve this efficiently. In this study, a new platform rover was developed, and its motion behavior was analyzed to better understand the traveling and excavation behaviors of construction machinery on the Moon. The rover is a four-track vehicle equipped with a robotic arm consisting of a boom, arm, and bucket. To analyze the rover’s motion behavior in sandy terrain, we first developed a simulator based on terramechanics and performed a numerical analysis. Subsequently, various experiments were conducted using the rover in the JAXA Space Exploration Field, which simulates the lunar environment. In the experiments, the rover traveled over level and sloped terrains and excavated the ground. The simulation and experimental results revealed similar trends in the traveling and excavation behaviors of the rover. These results can serve as basic guidelines for the design and operation of construction machinery on the Moon.

Abstract:The “LVS-PIE Phase A″ project successfully investigated the feasibility of using the Lunar Volatiles Scout instrument on the ispace Polar Ice Explorer rover to search for possible cold-trapped water ice deposits at the lunar poles. The suitability of the two systems for a joint mission was studied based on identified conflicts between both initial systems, such as the envelope for integration or the power budget. The interfaces were made compatible, mechanical structure and mechanisms were updated to enable system integration and thermal simulations were performed to refine the thermal design for safe operation within the thermal limits under lunar conditions. Thermal extraction simulations for the instrument constrained the power requirement during the instrument's heating phase. Real drilling down forces and reaction torques were determined with representative experiments for both rover and instrument revealing stable conditions during the envisioned drilling process. In the developed mission scenario, operational feasibility of the LVS-PIE mission concept was demonstrated using a notional traverse, remote sensing data and investigation of technical budgets. The mission can reach sites of high scientific interest at the lunar poles and perform relevant measurements with the instrument. A joined mission consisting of an instrument package for drilling and gas analysis on a rover below 20 kg total mass is found to be technically feasible and scientifically valuable.

Abstract:The lunar polar regions are key areas for future exploration due to the long-term continuous illumination and persistently shadowed regions that can cold trap abundant water and other volatiles. However, the complex terrain, dynamic lighting, and solar wind-induced electric-field environment present multiple challenges for polar investigation and sampling missions. China's Chang'E-7 (CE-7) will explore the Moon's south polar region in 2026. One of the scientific goals is to drill samples in a wide area with a rover for in situ analysis. This study analyzes the engineering constraints of the polar illumination condition, slopes, and electric field for landing and sampling-site selection. Then, we create a 3D model of CE-7's lunar rover in three operating environments by employing the Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Software, with the rover sampling (i) on a flat surface, (ii) in a shadow, and (iii) near a meter-scale crater under different solar altitude angles. The results show that the rover can be charged to different potentials under the combined effects of solar wind incident angles and surrounding terrains. We find that a favorable traversing and/or sampling site of the rover for future polar exploration is in the upwind direction of a bulge (positively elevated terrains, such as the lander or boulders) or crater, which will cause a minimum charging effect on the rover. Our results have important implications for minimizing the risk of charging effects and guiding the lunar polar region exploration.
