Abstract:AB(2)-type Ti-based hydrogen storage alloys are considered promising candidates for the hydrogen feeding system in hydrogen-metallurgy application. In this work, Ti087Zr0.15MnxCr1.75-xV0.25 (x = 1.25-1.5), Ti087Zr015Mn15Cr0.5-y(VFe)(y) (y = 0.25-0.43) and Ti0.85+zZr0.15Mn15Cr007(VFe)(0.43) (z = 0-0.05) alloys were synthesized using induction levitation melting, where ferrovanadium VFe consists of 80 wt% V and 20 wt% Fe. Subsequently, their microstructures and hydrogen storage performances were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that all alloy samples exhibit a single C14 Laves phase structure with uniform element distribution. With the increment of Cr/Mn, VFe/Cr ratio, or Ti stoichiometry, the alloys exhibit enhanced hydrogen storage capacity, accompanied by a decrease in hydrogenation equilibrium pressure because of interstitial volume expansion or hydrogen affinity improvement, which is also supported by density functional theory calculations. Considering the application of hydrogen metallurgy, Ti086Zr015Mn15Cr007(VFe)(0.43) alloy is regarded as a promising candidate, exhibiting a saturated capacity of 2.01 wt% H-2, an effective reversible capacity of 1.91 wt% H-2, rapid hydrogenation kinetics, excellent cyclic durability and low costs. This work provides valuable insights into the compositional design of hydrogen storage alloys for the hydrogen feeding system in hydrogen metallurgy applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy has attracted considerable attention as a promising alternative to petroleum. Herein, a novel (Al-x%Li)-y%NaBH4 composite with a core-shell structure has been designed and synthesized by a one-step ball-milling method for generating hydrogen by hydrolysis. NaBH4 formed a surface coating that completely wrapped the Al-x%Li alloy particles to prevent agglomeration and oxidation. Meanwhile, the synergism between the Al-Li alloy and NaBH4 promoted the hydrogen generation rate (HGR) of the composite. The total hydrogen release content of (Al-10%Li)-10%NaBH4 reached 1468.8 mLmiddotg-1, with the highest HGR reaching 4393.7 mLmiddotg-1middotmin-1 at 303 K. The (Al-x%Li)-y%NaBH4 composites also exhibited outstanding hydrolysis capacity during reaction with a near-stoichiometric amount of added CoCl2 solution. The hydrogen emission exceeded 90% when only twice the amount of stoichiometric CoCl2 solution was injected. The hydrogen mass density of the total system increased to more than 2.3 wt% from approximately 0.6 wt% with the addition of 10 stoichiometric solution, indicating the practical application of the portable fuel cell in conserving the total volume of the facility.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:ABSTRACT As one of the alternative clean fuels, aluminum is suitable for generating hydrogen and power via metal hydrolysis. The reaction process characteristics were studied in a cylindrical reactor with 5 g of Al–Li alloy powder as fuel at moderate temperatures. The test performed good results with 1,130 mL/g alloy of H2 yield, 86% of the reaction efficiency, and 54.5% of usable heat ratio. The dynamic change of temperature distribution was measured by 12 thermocouples in the reactor, and the maximum was not beyond 892°C. On the basis of the temperature characteristics, the reaction propagation speed was calculated and in the range of 0.57–0.95 mm/s. Moreover, the micromorphology and ingredients presented obvious differences between top product and bottom product, which was resulted from water vapor diffusion. The reaction of Al–Li alloy and steam was determined by both water vapor diffusion and heat transfer, which led to the distinct temperature trends near the vapor inlet, away from the vapor inlet, on the top and at the bottom. On the basis of the results, a mild and controllable hydrogen generation can be achieved at moderate temperatures by optimizing vapor inlet arrangement.
Low-cost Vanadium-Free Ti–Zr–Cr–Mn–Fe Based Alloys for Metal Hydride Hydrogen Compressor under Mild Conditions

Abstract:Hydrogen is the ideal green fuel and carbon-neutral energy carrier alternative to nonrenewable fuel sources. The high construction cost of hydrogen refueling stations has become one of the limitations to the further promotion and application of hydrogen energy. To realize 8-22 MPa hydrogen compression under mild conditions, the low cost Ti0.95Zr0.07Cr1.7-xMn0.3Fex (x = 0-0.5) alloys were designed and prepared by magnetic levitation melting in this work. The effect of Fe on Cr substitution on the microstructure and hydrogen storage properties of the alloy has been systematically investigated. With the increase of Fe substitution for Cr, all the alloys maintain a single C14 Laves phase, the thermodynamic plateau curve broadens and rises, while the hydrogen storage capacity diminishes slightly. For a better description of the thermodynamic properties of alloys at high temperatures as the function of temperature, a non-linear Van't Hoff fitting is introduced with satisfactory prediction. On account of significant Fe substitution for Cr, the unit cell shrinks and the interstitial size of alloy decreases, an optimal alloying constituent, Ti0.95Zr0.07Cr1.3Mn0.3Fe0.4, has been proposed and experimentally proved for the first time. This alloy exhibits the best overall performances and the plateau pressure is respectively 5.74 MPa for hydro-genation at 283 K and 25.97 MPa for dehydrogenation at 353 K without apparent hysteresis phenomenon. The hydrogen storage capacity is 1.59 wt% within 3 min and dehydrogenation enthalpy is 21.20 kJ/mol H2. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the low-cost hydrogen storage alloy design and application on quick response and high cycle stability metal hydride hydrogen compressors.

Abstract:Hydrogen has become a promising energy source due to its efficient and renewable properties. Although promising, hydrogen energy has not been in widespread use due to the lack of high-performance materials for hydrogen storage. Previous studies have shown that the addition of Al-based compounds to LiBH4 can create composites that have good properties for hydrogen storage. In this work, the dehydrogenation performances of different composite systems of 2LiBH4+ M (M = Al, LiAlH4, Li3AlH6) were investigated. The results show that, under a ball to powder ratio of 25:1 and a rotation speed of 300 rpm, the optimum ball milling time is 50 h for synthesizing Li3AlH6 from LiH and LiAlH4. The three studied systems destabilized LiBH4 at relatively low temperatures, and the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite demonstrated excellent behavior. Based on the differential scanning calorimetry results, pure LiBH4 released hydrogen at 469°C. The dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 is 416°C for 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 versus 435°C for 2LiBH4-LiAlH4 and 445°C for 2LiBH4-Al. The 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6, 2LiBH4-LiAlH4, and 2LiBH4-Al samples released 9.1, 8, and 5.7 wt.% of H2, respectively. Additionally, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite released the 9.1 wt.% H2 within 150 min. An increase in the kinetics was achieved. From the results, it was concluded that 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 exhibits the best dehydrogenation performance. Therefore, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite is considered a promising hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:On-site on-demand hydrogen generation from a new Mg-LiBH4-AlCl3 system has been established. The hydrogen yield, mHGR (maximum hydrogen generation rate) and reaction stability can be adjusted by changing the samples' compositions, milling time and water/mixture ratios. The Mg-9 wt.%LiBH4-1 wt.% AlCl3 composite reaches a conversion yield of 87%, corresponding to 1083.5 ml H-2 g(-1) (composite), and the mHGR is 1256.9 ml min(-1) g(-1) in 60 min at 298 K. The synergistic effect between Mg and LiBH4 as well as the catalytic effects of LiBH4-AlCl3 additives both contribute to the improved hydrolytic performances. Compared with the hydrolysis of single Mg or Mg-LiBH4 system, the Mg-LiBH4-AlCl3 mixture has greatly improved its hydrogen yield and mHGR. Abstract:Leveraging the liquid-phase immiscibility effect and phase diagram calculations, a sequence of alloy powders with varying Fe content was designed and fabricated utilizing the gas atomization method. Microstructural characterizations, employing SEM, EDS, and XRD analyses, revealed the successful formation of an incomplete shell on the surfaces of Al-Bi-Fe powders, obviating the need for Sn doping. This study systematically investigated the microstructure, hydrolysis performance, and hydrolysis process of these alloys in deionized water. Notably, Al-10Bi-7Fe exhibited the highest hydrogen production, reaching 961.0 NmL/g, while Al-10Bi-10Fe demonstrated the peak conversion rate at 92.99%. The hydrolysis activation energy of each Al-Bi-Fe alloy powder was calculated using the Arrhenius equation, indicating that a reduction in activation energy was achieved through Fe doping.

Abstract:The addition of lithium to Al-H2O reaction is proven an effective means to produce hydrogen. This study conducted experiments on a specially designed test system. Results of the experiment indicated that Al-Li alloy had a high reactive activity in water vapor. The reaction of Al-Li alloy with water vapor at the range of 300 degrees C to 700 degrees C can produce H-2 of 980-1120.8 ml/g. A thermal infrared imager in the specially designed reactor recorded the surface temperature change in the reaction process. Temperature analysis can guide the utilization of the heat released in Al-H2O reaction.

Abstract:Aluminum (Al) is a promising hydrogen carrier. Continuous reaction of pure Al and water (H2O) cannot proceed smoothly because Al particles are covered with a protective oxide layer. Thus, 20% Mg, Li, Zn, Bi, and Sn content were added as additives to Al-H2O reaction at high temperature. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted to determine the reactivity of pure Al and five other samples with additives in a vapor atmosphere. Experiments indicated that Mg and Li drove the Al-H2O reaction, but Zn, Bi, and Sn had little effect. Thus, Mg and Li were selected as activators in the hydrogen generation of the Al-H2O reaction conducted on a specially designed experimental facility. Hydrogen was monitored in the reaction of Al-based composites with H2O vapor in real time. Among them, Al-20%Li achieved the fastest hydrogen generation rate (309.74 ml s(-1) g(-1)) and the largest hydrogen amount (1038.9 ml g(-1)). XRD (Xray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and TEM (transmission electron microscopy) were used for product analyses to identify the influence of adding Mg and Li. Abstract:Aluminum hydride (AlH3) is a promising candidate for hydrogen storage due to its high hydrogen density of 10 wt%. Several polymorphs of AlH3 (e.g., alpha, beta, and gamma) have been successfully synthesized by wet chemical reaction of LiAlH4 and AlCl3 in ether solution followed by desolvation. However, the synthesis process of alpha'-AlH3 from wet chemicals still remains unclear. In the present work, alpha'-AlH3 was synthesized first by the formation of the etherate AlH3 through a reaction of LiAlH4 and AlCl3 in ether solution. Then, the etherate AlH3 was heated at 60 degrees C under an ether gas atmosphere and in the presence of excess LiAlH4 to remove the ether ligand. Finally, alpha'-AlH3 was obtained by ether washing to remove the excess LiAlH4. It is suggested that the desolvation of the etherate AlH3 under an ether gas atmosphere is essential for the formation of alpha'-AlH3 from the etherate AlH3. The as-synthesized alpha'-AlH3 takes the form of rod-like particles and can release 7.7 wt% hydrogen in the temperature range 120-200 degrees C.

Abstract:The hydrolysis of aluminum powder can be efficiently improved by milling with hydrides, among which LiH performs the best. Both sample composition and milling time affect the hydrolysis of Al-LiH mixture. Reaction temperature has a great impact on improving the hydrolysis properties. The reactions taken place in the solution are studied and the formation of the LiAl2(OH)(7) hydrate is found to be important in enhancing the corrosion of Al. The Al-30 mol% LiH milled for 3 h sample reaches a yield of 96.3%, i.e. 1442.4 ml H-2 g(-1) (composite) within 1 h at 75 degrees C. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, a series of multicomponent Al-based composites were prepared by mechanical ball milling of Al powder, low-melting-point metals (Ga, In, Sn), NaCl, g-C 3 N 4 and carbon nanospheres. The composites were thoroughly analyzed using state-of-art characterization techniques with respect to morphologies, structures, chemical compositions, thermal, and electrochemical properties, etc. The hydrogen production performance of Al-based composites has been investigated under three low-temperature conditions, including deionized water (275.15 K), snow-melting agent aqueous solution (253.15–273.15 K), and aqueous electrolyte solutions (KOH, FeCl 3 , CaCl 2 , ethylene glycol) at 233.15 K. The best hydrogen production performance with a hydrogen yield of 1133 mL·gAl −1 at 275.15 K and 1095 mL·gAl −1 at 253.15 K was obtained. Especially, no induction time was observed in either condition. Even at 233.15 K in KOH solution, its reaction induction time was around 6 s and final hydrogen yield reached 1057 mL·gAl −1 . The observed hydrogen production capabilities of composites have been analyzed and understood in depth, and a tentative multicomponent activation mechanism for low-temperature hydrogen production was proposed as well.

Abstract:As the most abundant metal on the earth, aluminum is one of alternative clean fuels. This work presents experimental studies on the reaction process characteristics in a specially designed reactor using Al-based metals as fuel. The experiments of different samples with steam in a thermogravimetric analyzer and special designed reactor indicated that Al-Li alloy had a better reactivity than Al-Mg-Li. The efficiency was 87.83% and H-2 yield reached 1155.03 ml/g for Al-Li alloy. It is feasible to use Al-Li alloy as fuel to provide H-2 and heat.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a kind of promising clean energy with huge potential values for human being. Developing a convenient real-time and on-demand hydrogen production and utilization method is critical for its wide practices. Liquid metal was recently found to be able to easily activate aluminum in aqueous solution to continuously and quickly generate hydrogen at room temperature, and thus provides a straightforward hydrogen production way. To further improve this technology, we are dedicated here to investigate the effects of the container substrate on such hydrogen generation process. An interesting phenomenon was found that metal substrate material would evidently enhance the hydrogen generation rate. For conceptual illustration purpose, comparative experiments were conducted to demonstrate the different hydrogen evolution modes between the present method and former approach, and the enhancement mechanism lying behind was revealed. In addition, the influence of the surface roughness of the substrate on the hydrogen production performance was also clarified. The present finding would help motivate an improved extremely simple, straightforward and low cost way for the liquid metal assisted aluminum hydrogen production.

Abstract:A new hydrogen storage alloy pair, La0.6Ml0.4Ni4.7 Cr0.3-La0.2Mm0.8Ni4.35Fe0.65, was developed to serve as a bus hydride air conditioner, which utilizes the waste heat of exhaust gases of a bus as the high temperature source. Under the operating temperature of 150-250 ��C/35-40��C/15-20��C, the maximum working hydrogen capacity and the theoretical value of COPc are 4.5 and 0.74 H/mol M respectively, which can meet the practical requirements.

Abstract:The skimmed hot dross generated in secondary production of aluminum contains high amount of metallic aluminum and also the potential heat. An innovative process for hydrogen generation using skimmed hot dross from aluminum remelting industry is proposed in this work. The reaction behavior between skimmed dross and water steam in terms of hydrogen evolution variation at high temperature is studied. The results show that the inherent salts in the dross could accelerate the hydrogen generation at temperature region of 600850 degrees C by dissolving the amorphous and gamma-Al2O3 product layer in water steam atmosphere. The maximum aluminum conversion degree was found to be more than 60%, and the hydrogen evolution rate was over 60 cm(3) g-(1)min-(1) when skimmed dross with 30 wt% Al was used in non-isothermal test. The mechanism related to the texture responding of alumina layer with different amount of salts additives and temperatures is discussed. (C) 2017 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:In this work, AB5 type rare earth-based and AB2 type TiCr2-based hydrogen storage alloys were studied for the purpose of high-pressure hydrogen compression. A pair of hydrogen storage alloys, Ml0.55Mm0.2Ca0.25Ni5 (Ml: La-rich mischmetal; Mm: Ce-rich mischmetal) and (Ti0.97Zr0.03)1.1Cr1.6Mn0.4, with favorable hydrogen storage properties was developed as the alloys for a double-stage high-pressure metal hydride hydrogen compressor (MHHC). With the developed alloy pair, we designed and built a MHHC prototype with hydrogen capacity of 100L, which could produce high-pressure ultrapure hydrogen with pressure of 45MPa and purity of 99.9999% from industrial grade hydrogen (98% purity) at pressure of around 2MPa. During the compression procedure, only hot water is used as the heating source. The compression characteristics were studied and the thermal efficiency was calculated.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel with high calorific value. Aluminum is a good option for working as hydrolyzing metal, and aluminum water reactions at medium high temperature serve as a good energy supply in the use of both hydrogen and released heat, which leads to high energy efficiency. This study focused on hydrogen production characteristics and the chemical kinetics of aluminum particles with the addition of magnesium and lithium below 1030 degrees C. The experiments were conducted with THERMO CAHN's Thermax500 pressurized thermogravimetric analyzer. The Al content was settled at 85%, and the Mg and Al contents were adjusted from 0% to 15%. The addition of Li and Mg into Al resulted in good hydrolysis performance, and the ratio of the reacted Al to the total Al was over 50% and even reached up to 89%. The reaction process showed an obvious three-stage feature, and the three stages primarily corresponded to the reactions of Li, Mg, and Al. The products of hydrolysis in our tests were LiAlO2, Li2Al4O7, Al2O3, and MgO. The different promotion mechanism of Li and Mg on the reaction of Al H2O resulted in a hydrolysis performance that did not change monotonously with Li content. Improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4 by AlH3 addition

Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) possesses a very high hydrogen capacity (18.5 wt%) but suffers from high thermal stability. In this work, the as-prepared aluminium hydride (AlH3) was ball milled with LiBH4 forming 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite to improve the hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4. Hydrogen desorption measurements showed that a hydrogen capacity of 11.2 wt% is obtained from the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite and the desorption temperature of LiBH4 with AlH3 addition is reduced by more than 30 °C. AlH3 is better as an Al source than the as-received Al in that the hydrogen desorption extent of AlH3-doped LiBH4 reaches 70%, while it is 54% and 61% for the pure LiBH4 and the Al-doped LiBH4. This is due to the brittle and oxide-free nature of AlH3. Microstructure investigations showed that during heating process, the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite undergoes AlH3 decomposition forming Al* and releasing hydrogen, followed by the decomposition of LiBH4. LiBH4 will react with Al* forming AlB2 and LiAlB compounds during its decomposition, which contributes to the improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4.
