Abstract:Extensive techniques have been developed to produce hydrogen from water by photochemical, electrochemical, or thermochemical routes. One of the perspective methods of hydrogen generation is from water by means of metals or alloys. Besides iron, the appropriate material for this goal include Al, Zn, Mg, B, and so on, which possess properties such as high efficiency, availability, and environmental safety. The aim of this review is to introduce the approaches and strategies of hydrogen production with other metals (Al, Zn, Mg, and B) under mild hydrothermal conditions, which will be beneficial for the hydrogen production from water in practical considerations. Extensive techniques have been developed to produce hydrogen from water by photochemical, electrochemical, or thermochemical routes. One of the perspective methods of hydrogen generation is from water by means of metals or alloys. This chapter introduces the approaches and strategies of hydrogen production with metals (Al, Zn, magnesium (Mg), and B) under mild hydrothermal conditions, which will be beneficial for promising methods of hydrogen generation from water in practical considerations. The generation of hydrogen from aluminum–water reactions has gained growing interest, which can then be utilized in fuel cells, generators, and other devices. Al is found to be the most appropriate for hydrogen production because of its highly positive ion (+3), low price, and abundance in the Earth's crust. Zn has gained much attention in the hydrogen production from water under hydrothermal conditions, because the solar thermochemical cycle based on ZnO/Zn redox reactions achieved high energy conversion efficiency.
