Abstract:At brazing of dissimilar materials, such as Kovar and Ti (Mo), problems arise due to different physical and mechanical properties of the materials being joined and their chemical composition that affects the wetting of base material by brazing filler metal as well as the formation of the brazed joint structure. The results of investigations of the spreading of ductile silver brazing filler metals (Ag-Cu, Ag-Cu-Sn) over Kovar and titanium, and the influence of barrier nickel coating on the structure of Kovar–titanium brazed joints are shown. X-ray microanalysis revealed that brazed seams with eutectic structure form at the application of brazing filler metal of Ag-Cu system, and at the application of Ag-Cu-Sn brazing filler metal a third copper-based phase, enriched in the tin (up to 16.4 at.%), appears in the brazed seams along the boundaries of the Ag-based solid solution grains. Morphological features were studied of the structure of Kovar–molybdenum brazed joints produced by vacuum brazing, using a brazing filler metal of Cu-Mn-Co system. It is found that the brazed seam structure consists of a copper-based solid solution, separate iron-based grains and a molybdenum-based reaction layer, which crystallizes on the molybdenum–filler interface. Investigation results showed that shortening soaking time at brazing temperature reduces the reaction layer thickness to 1 μm.
