Abstract:Near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra were measured and analyzed to reveal the adsorption structures of NO on Pt(1 1 1) at 290 and 230 K. N K-edge NEXAFS spectra show a single π* resonance at 290 K, while they exhibit double peaks at 230 K. Simple polarization analysis cannot be applied to such a complicated system. Simulations based on the multiple scattering theory confirmed that NO is uniquely adsorbed at the hollow site at 290 K and there are two kinds of adsorption species at 230 K: one at atop site with a tilt angle of about 50° and another at hollow site with upright direction. They are in close agreement with the results by recent LEED I/V analysis.

Abstract:This paper first discusses the relationship between the rank null space property (NSP) and the nuclear norm minimization. Several versions of the rank NSP, i.e. the stable rank NSP, robust rank NSP and Frobenius robust rank NSP are proposed, and their equivalent forms are derived. At the same time, it is shown that the stable rank NSP is weaker than the rank restricted isometry property (RIP) to recover the low-rank matrices via the nuclear norm minimization. Finally, the rank NSP is extended to the case of Schatten-[Formula: see text] NSP for [Formula: see text], and the solutions to the Schatten-[Formula: see text] quasi-norm minimization are characterized by the different types of Schatten-[Formula: see text] NSP.

Abstract:Virtually anything can be and is ranked; people, institutions, countries, words, genes. Rankings reduce complex systems to ordered lists, reflecting the ability of their elements to perform relevant functions, and are being used from socioeconomic policy to knowledge extraction. A century of research has found regularities when temporal rank data is aggregated. Far less is known, however, about how rankings change in time. Here we explore the dynamics of 30 rankings in natural, social, economic, and infrastructural systems, comprising millions of elements and timescales from minutes to centuries. We find that the flux of new elements determines the stability of a ranking: for high flux only the top of the list is stable, otherwise top and bottom are equally stable. We show that two basic mechanisms - displacement and replacement of elements - capture empirical ranking dynamics. The model uncovers two regimes of behavior; fast and large rank changes, or slow diffusion. Our results indicate that the balance between robustness and adaptability in ranked systems might be governed by simple random processes irrespective of system details.

Abstract:In this article, we study the unconditional uniqueness of. (H) over dot(s), 0 < s < 1, solutions for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation i partial derivative(t)u+Delta u+c vertical bar u vertical bar(alpha)u = 0 in R-n. We give a unified proof of the previously known results in the subcritical cases and critical cases, and we also extend these results to some previously unsettled cases. Our proof uses, in particular, negative order Sobolev spaces (or Besov spaces), general nonhomogeneous Strichartz estimates, and the improved regularity property for the difference of two solutions.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to show that for every (reflexive) infinite-dimensional Banach space X there exists a reflexive Banach space Y and such that R is a rank-one operator, but does not attain its norm. This answers a question posed by Dantas and the first two authors. Furthermore, motivated by the parallelism exhibited in the literature between the V -property introduced by Khatskevich, Ostrovskii and Shulman and the weak maximizing property introduced by Aron, García, Pellegrino and Teixeira, we also study the relationship between these two properties and norm-attaining perturbations of operators.

Abstract:A bstract There are two major ways of constructing 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 superconformal field theories (SCFTs): the first one is putting a 6d (2 , 0) theory on a punctured Riemann surface (class-S theory), and the second one is putting type IIB string theory on a 3d canonical singularity. As there are interests on low rank theories, we search all the possibilities from above two constructions. Most of those theories are engineered by class-S theory with irregular singularities, and we find a universal formula for the rank of theory so that a complete search is possible. We then compute various physical quantities of those theories, such as the central charges, flavor symmetry, associated vertex operator algebra and Higgs branch, etc. One of interesting consequence of our results are the prediction of many new isomorphism of 2d vertex operator algebra.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:This paper presents a panoramic macroscopic outlook of rank distributions. We establish a general framework for the analysis of rank distributions, which classifies them into five macroscopic "socioeconomic" states: monarchy, oligarchy-feudalism, criticality, socialism-capitalism, and communism. Oligarchy-feudalism is shown to be characterized by discrete macroscopic rank distributions, and socialism-capitalism is shown to be characterized by continuous macroscopic size distributions. Criticality is a transition state between oligarchy-feudalism and socialism-capitalism, which can manifest allometric scaling with multifractal spectra. Monarchy and communism are extreme forms of oligarchy-feudalism and socialism-capitalism, respectively, in which the intrinsic randomness vanishes. The general framework is applied to three different models of rank distributions-top-down, bottom-up, and global-and unveils each model's macroscopic universality and versatility. The global model yields a macroscopic classification of the generalized Zipf law, an omnipresent form of rank distributions observed across the sciences. An amalgamation of the three models establishes a universal rank-distribution explanation for the macroscopic emergence of a prevalent class of continuous size distributions, ones governed by unimodal densities with both Pareto and inverse-Pareto power-law tails.

Abstract:We study finitely generated models of countable theories, having at most countably many nonisomorphic finitely generated models. We intro- duce a notion of rank of finitely generated models and we prove, when T has at most countably many nonisomorphic finitely generated models, that every finitely generated model has an ordinal rank. This rank is used to give a prop- erty of finitely generated models analogue to the Hopf property of groups and also to give a necessary and sufficient condition for a finitely generated model to be prime of its complete theory. We investigate some properties of limit groups of equationally noetherian groups, in respect to their ranks.

Abstract:Despite the extreme popularity of deep learning in science and industry, its formal understanding is limited. This thesis puts forth notions of rank as key for developing a theory of deep learning, focusing on the fundamental aspects of generalization and expressiveness. In particular, we establish that gradient-based training can induce an implicit regularization towards low rank for several neural network architectures, and demonstrate empirically that this phenomenon may facilitate an explanation of generalization over natural data (e.g., audio, images, and text). Then, we characterize the ability of graph neural networks to model interactions via a notion of rank, which is commonly used for quantifying entanglement in quantum physics. A central tool underlying these results is a connection between neural networks and tensor factorizations. Practical implications of our theory for designing explicit regularization schemes and data preprocessing algorithms are presented.

Abstract:We slightly generalize a notion of rank introduced by Glasner and Megrelishvili, which captures the oscillations of elements of Ellis semigroups, so that it can be applied to any compact Hausdorff space instead of being limited to the metric case. Then, we relate this rank to classical dividing lines in the model-theoretic stability hierarchy. For example, that the rank is ordinal-valued if and only if the background theory is NIP.

Abstract:Nonlinear dynamics on graphs has rapidly become a topical issue with many physical applications, ranging from nonlinear optics to Bose-Einstein condensation. Whenever in a physical experiment a ramified structure is involved, it can prove useful to approximate such a structure by a metric graph, or network. For the Schroedinger equation it turns out that the sixth power in the nonlinear term of the energy is critical in the sense that below that power the constrained energy is lower bounded irrespectively of the value of the mass (subcritical case). On the other hand, if the nonlinearity power equals six, then the lower boundedness depends on the value of the mass: below a critical mass, the constrained energy is lower bounded, beyond it, it is not. For powers larger than six the constrained energy functional is never lower bounded, so that it is meaningless to speak about ground states (supercritical case). These results are the same as in the case of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on the real line. In fact, as regards the existence of ground states, the results for systems on graphs differ, in general, from the ones for systems on the line even in the subcritical case: in the latter case, whenever the constrained energy is lower bounded there always exist ground states (the solitons, whose shape is explicitly known), whereas for graphs the existence of a ground state is not guaranteed. For the critical case, our results show a phenomenology much richer than the analogous on the line.
