Abstract:In nature and society, most of competitions take place on the boundaries among a group of domains where different individuals or colonies share common resources; therefore, it is widely believed that domain boundaries play important roles in the evolution of many complex systems. Here, we first give a definition for multiorder boundaries among discrete domains and then propose a general method to calculate their relative fractal dimension, i.e., the ratio of the fractal dimension of the boundaries versus that of the domains themselves. Through analyzing three types of real-world discrete domains, several interesting results are revealed. For example, the limitation on the number of domains that an individual can join in may produce longer boundaries indicating more cruel competitions among the domains. Besides, the individuals with more social links are always considered more important in social networks, and it is found that these individuals as valuable resources of social domains are always centralized on the boundaries of higher order.

Abstract:Searching for generic behaviors has been one of the driving forces leading to a deep understanding and classification of diverse phenomena. Usually a starting point is the development of a phenomenology based on observations. Such is the case for power law distributions encountered in a wealth of situations coming from physics, geophysics, biology, lexicography as well as social and financial networks. This finding is however restricted to a range of values outside of which finite size corrections are often invoked. Here we uncover a universal behavior of the way in which elements of a system are distributed according to their rank with respect to a given property, valid for the full range of values, regardless of whether or not a power law has previously been suggested. We propose a two parameter functional form for these rank-ordered distributions that gives excellent fits to an impressive amount of very diverse phenomena, coming from the arts, social and natural sciences. It is a discrete version of a generalized beta distribution, given by f(r) = A(N+1-r)(b)/r(a), where r is the rank, N its maximum value, A the normalization constant and (a, b) two fitting exponents. Prompted by our genetic sequence observations we present a growth probabilistic model incorporating mutation-duplication features that generates data complying with this distribution. The competition between permanence and change appears to be a relevant, though not necessary feature. Additionally, our observations mainly of social phenomena suggest that a multifactorial quality resulting from the convergence of several heterogeneous underlying processes is an important feature. We also explore the significance of the distribution parameters and their classifying potential. The ubiquity of our findings suggests that there must be a fundamental underlying explanation, most probably of a statistical nature, such as an appropriate central limit theorem formulation.

Abstract:A mere hyperbolic law, like the Zipf's law power function, is often inadequate to describe rank-size relationships. An alternative theoretical distribution is proposed based on theoretical physics arguments starting from the Yule-Simon distribution. A modeling is proposed leading to a universal form. A theoretical suggestion for the "best (or optimal) distribution", is provided through an entropy argument. The ranking of areas through the number of cities in various countries and some sport competition ranking serves for the present illustrations.

Abstract:The rank-size regularity known as Zipf's law is one of scaling laws and frequently observed within the natural living world and in social institutions. Many scientists tried to derive the rank-size scaling relation by entropy-maximizing methods, but the problem failed to be resolved thoroughly. By introducing a pivotal constraint condition, I present here a set of new derivations based on the self-similar hierarchy of cities. First, I derive a pair of exponent laws by postulating local entropy maximizing. From the two exponential laws follows a general hierarchical scaling law, which implies general Zipf's law. Second, I derive a special hierarchical scaling law with exponent equal to 1 by postulating global entropy maximizing, and this implies the strong form of Zipf's law. The rank-size scaling law proved to be one of the special cases of the hierarchical law, and the derivation suggests a certain scaling range with the first or last data point as an outlier. The entropy maximization of social systems differs from the notion of entropy increase in thermodynamics. For urban systems, entropy maximizing suggests the best equilibrium state of equity for parts/individuals and efficiency for the whole.

Abstract:Many scientists are interested in but puzzled by the various inverse power laws with a negative exponent 1 such as the rank-size rule. The rank-size rule is a very simple scaling law followed by many observations of the ubiquitous empirical patterns in physical and social systems. Where there is a rank-size distribution, there will be a hierarchy with cascade structure. However, the equivalence relation between the rank-size rule and the hierarchical scaling law remains to be mathematically demonstrated and empirically testified. In this paper, theoretical derivation, mathematical experiments, and empirical analysis are employed to show that the rank-size rule is equivalent in theory to the hierarchical scaling law (the Nn principle). Abstracting an ordered set of quantities in the form {1, 1/2,..., 1/k,...} from the rank-size rule, I prove a geometric subdivision theorem of the harmonic sequence (k=1, 2, 3,...). By the theorem, the rank-size distribution can be transformed into a self-similar hierarchy, thus a power law can be decomposed as a pair of exponential laws, and further the rank-size power law can be reconstructed as a hierarchical scaling law. A number of ubiquitous empirical observations and rules, including Zipf's law, Pareto's distribution, fractals, allometric scaling, 1/f noise, can be unified into the hierarchical framework. The self-similar hierarchy can provide us with a new perspective of looking at the inverse power law of nature or even how nature works.

Using the idea from general fractals and scaling, I propose a dual competition hypothesis of city development to explain the value intervals and the special value, 1, of the power exponent. Zipf's law and Pareto's law can be mathematically transformed into one another, but represent different processes of urban evolution, respectively. Based on the Pareto distribution, a frequency correlation function can be constructed. By scaling analysis and multifractals spectrum, the parameter interval of Pareto exponent is derived as (0.5, 1]; Based on the Zipf distribution, a size correlation function can be built, and it is opposite to the first one. By the second correlation function and multifractals notion, the Pareto exponent interval is derived as [1, 2). Thus the process of urban evolution falls into two effects: one is the Pareto effect indicating city number increase (external complexity), and the other the Zipf effect indicating city size growth (internal complexity). Because of struggle of the two effects, the scaling exponent varies from 0.5 to 2; but if the two effects reach equilibrium with each other, the scaling exponent approaches 1. A series of mathematical experiments on hierarchical correlation are employed to verify the models and a conclusion can be drawn that if cities in a given region follow Zipf's law, the frequency and size correlations will follow the scaling law. This theory can be generalized to interpret the inverse power-law distributions in various fields of physical and social sciences.

Abstract:Virtually anything can be and is ranked; people, institutions, countries, words, genes. Rankings reduce complex systems to ordered lists, reflecting the ability of their elements to perform relevant functions, and are being used from socioeconomic policy to knowledge extraction. A century of research has found regularities when temporal rank data is aggregated. Far less is known, however, about how rankings change in time. Here we explore the dynamics of 30 rankings in natural, social, economic, and infrastructural systems, comprising millions of elements and timescales from minutes to centuries. We find that the flux of new elements determines the stability of a ranking: for high flux only the top of the list is stable, otherwise top and bottom are equally stable. We show that two basic mechanisms - displacement and replacement of elements - capture empirical ranking dynamics. The model uncovers two regimes of behavior; fast and large rank changes, or slow diffusion. Our results indicate that the balance between robustness and adaptability in ranked systems might be governed by simple random processes irrespective of system details.

Abstract:A set of data with positive values follows a Pareto distribution if the log-log plot of value versus rank is approximately a straight line. A Pareto distribution satisfies Zipf's law if the log-log plot has a slope of -1. Since many types of ranked data follow Zipf's law, it is considered a form of universality. We propose a mathematical explanation for this phenomenon based on Atlas models and first-order models, systems of positive continuous semimartingales with parameters that depend only on rank. We show that the stable distribution of an Atlas model will follow Zipf's law if and only if two natural conditions, conservation and completeness, are satisfied. Since Atlas models and first-order models can be constructed to approximate systems of time-dependent rank-based data, our results can explain the universality of Zipf's law for such systems. However, ranked data generated by other means may follow non-Zipfian Pareto distributions. Hence, our results explain why Zipf's law holds for word frequency, firm size, household wealth, and city size, while it does not hold for earthquake magnitude, cumulative book sales, the intensity of solar flares, and the intensity of wars, all of which follow non-Zipfian Pareto distributions.

Abstract:Although power laws of the Zipf type have been used by many workers to fit rank distributions in different fields like in economy, geophysics, genetics, soft-matter, networks etc., these fits usually fail at the tails. Some distributions have been proposed to solve the problem, but unfortunately they do not fit at the same time both ending tails. We show that many different data in rank laws, like in granular materials, codons, author impact in scientific journal, etc. are very well fitted by a beta-like function. Then we propose that such universality is due to the fact that a system made from many subsystems or choices, imply stretched exponential frequency-rank functions which qualitatively and quantitatively can be fitted with the proposed beta-like function distribution in the limit of many random variables. We prove this by transforming the problem into an algebraic one: finding the rank of successive products of a given set of numbers.

Abstract:An Atlas model is a rank-based system of continuous semimartingales for which the steady-state values of the processes follow a power law, or Pareto distribution. For a power law, the log-log plot of these steady-state values versus rank is a straight line. Zipf's law is a power law for which the slope of this line is -1. In this note, rank-based conditions are found under which an Atlas model will follow Zipf's law. An advantage of this rank-based approach is that it provides information about the dynamics of systems that result in Zipf's law.

Abstract:Fractals, 1/f noise, and Zipf's laws are frequently observed within the natural living world as well as in social institutions, representing three signatures of complex systems. All these observations are associated with scaling laws and therefore have created much research interest in many diverse scientific circles. However, the inherent relationships between these scaling phenomena are not yet clear. In this paper, theoretical demonstration and mathematical experiments based on urban studies are employed to reveal the analogy between fractal patterns, 1/f spectra, and the Zipf distribution. First, the multifractal process empirically suggests the Zipf distribution. Second, a 1/f spectrum is mathematically identical to Zipf's law. Third, both 1/f spectra and Zipf's law can be converted into a self-similar hierarchy. Fourth, fractals, 1/f spectra, Zipf's law can be rescaled with similar exponential laws and power laws. The self-similar hierarchy is a more general scaling method which can be used to unify different scaling phenomena and rules in both physical and social systems such as cities, rivers, earthquakes, fractals, 1/f noise, and rank-size distributions. The mathematical laws of this hierarchical structure can provide us with a holistic perspective of looking at complexity and complex systems. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hierarchy of cities reflects the ubiquitous structure frequently observed in the natural world and social institutions. Where there is a hierarchy with cascade structure, there is a Zipf's rank-size distribution, and vice versa . However, we have no theory to explain the spatial dynamics associated with Zipf's law of cities. In this paper, a new angle of view is proposed to find the simple rules dominating complex systems and regular patterns behind random distribution of cities. The hierarchical structure can be described with a set of exponential functions that are identical in form to Horton-Strahler's laws on rivers and Gutenberg-Richter's laws on earthquake energy. From the exponential models, we can derive four power laws including Zipf's law indicative of fractals and scaling symmetry. A card-shuffling model is built to interpret the relation between Zipf's law and hierarchy of cities. This model can be expanded to illuminate the general empirical power-law distributions across the individual physical and social sciences, which are hard to be comprehended within the specific scientific domains. This research is useful for us to understand how complex systems such as networks of cities are self-organized.

Abstract:This paper contributes to the demonstration that the self-similar city hierarchies with cascade structure can be modeled with a pair of scaling laws reflecting the recursive process of urban systems. First we transform the Beckmann's model on city hierarchies and generalize Davis's 2 n -rule to an rn-rule on the size – number relationship of cities ( r > 1), and then reduce both Beckmann's and Davis's models to a pair of scaling laws taking the form of exponentials. Then we derive an exact three-parameter Zipf-type model from the scaling laws to revise the commonly used two-parameter Zipf model. By doing so, we reveal the fractal essence of central place hierarchies and link the rank-size rule to central place model logically. The new mathematical frameworks are applied to the class counts of the 1950–70 world city hierarchy presented by Davis in 1978, and several alternative approaches are illustrated to estimate the fractal dimension.

Abstract:The rank-size plots of a large number of different physical and socio-economic systems are usually said to follow Zipf's law, but a unique framework for the comprehension of this ubiquitous scaling law is still lacking. Here we show that a dynamical approach is crucial: during their evolution, some systems are attracted towards Zipf's law, while others presents Zipf's law only temporarily and, therefore, spuriously. A truly Zipfian dynamics is characterized by a dynamical constraint, or coherence, among the parameters of the generating PDF, and the number of elements in the system. A clear-cut example of such coherence is natural language. Our framework allows us to derive some quantitative results that go well beyond the usual Zipf's law: i) earthquakes can evolve only incoherently and thus show Zipf's law spuriously; this allows an assessment of the largest possible magnitude of an earthquake occurring in a geographical region. ii) We prove that Zipfian dynamics are not additive, explaining analytically why US cities evolve coherently, while world cities do not. iii) Our concept of coherence can be used for model selection, for example, the Yule-Simon process can describe the dynamics of world countries' GDP. iv) World cities present spurious Zipf's law and we use this property for estimating the maximal population of an urban agglomeration.

Abstract:To describe and analyze the dynamics of Self-Organized Criticality (SOC) systems, a four-state continuous-time Markov model is proposed in this paper. Different to computer simulation or numeric experimental approaches commonly employed for explaining the power law in SOC, in this paper, based on this Markov model, using E.T.Jayness' Maximum Entropy method, we have derived a mathematical proof on the power law distribution for the size of these events. Both this Makov model and the mathematical proof on power law present a new angle on the universality of power law distributions, they also show that the scale free property exists not necessary only in SOC system, but in a class of dynamical systems which can be modelled by the proposed Markov model.
The common patterns of abundance: the log series and Zipf's law

Abstract:In a language corpus, the probability that a word occurs $n$ times is often proportional to $1/n^2$. Assigning rank, $s$, to words according to their abundance, $\log s$ vs $\log n$ typically has a slope of minus one. That simple Zipf's law pattern also arises in the population sizes of cities, the sizes of corporations, and other patterns of abundance. By contrast, for the abundances of different biological species, the probability of a population of size $n$ is typically proportional to $1/n$, declining exponentially for larger $n$, the log series pattern. This article shows that the differing patterns of Zipf's law and the log series arise as the opposing endpoints of a more general theory. The general theory follows from the generic form of all probability patterns as a consequence of conserved average values and the associated invariances of scale. To understand the common patterns of abundance, the generic form of probability distributions plus the conserved average abundance is sufficient. The general theory includes cases that are between the Zipf and log series endpoints, providing a broad framework for analyzing widely observed abundance patterns.

Abstract:This article investigates methods in social network analysis to identify the most important or the most prominent actors in a social network by ranking them appropriately. Although much has been done since Seeley's (1949) seminal work, several questions remain: How does scaling an adjacency matrix of a social network affect its eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenvectors? How can the differences between the left and the right eigenvectors be reconciled? Do both depict the two sides of the same coin? Can they be "merged" objectively to yield a single eigenvector, and how? Under what conditions does an adjacency matrix characterize, as a first-order approximation, the dynamics of its corresponding social network? Most importantly, how can a general dynamic model be derived to make clear the interrelationships of existing models?In answering these questions, we derive a general model for the evolving rank (which we define as a general measure of prominence) of a (fixed) set of actors in a social network from a system of nonlinear equations; show that, under a rank equivalence condition, an adjacency matrix characterizes the dynamics of its corresponding social network as a first-order approximation; put some existing models within a single framework; and give a solution to the vexing problem of specifying the reference values of the rank.

Abstract:Rank-order relational data, in which each actor ranks other actors according to some criterion, often arise from sociometric measurements of judgment or preference. The authors propose a general framework for representing such data, define a class of exponential-family models for rank-order relational structure, and derive sufficient statistics for interdependent ordinal judgments that do not require the assumption of comparability across raters. These statistics allow estimation of effects for a variety of plausible mechanisms governing rank structure, both in a cross-sectional context and evolving over time. The authors apply this framework to model the evolution of liking judgments in an acquaintance process and to model recall of relative volume of interpersonal interaction among members of a technology education program.

Abstract:We describe society as a nonequilibrium probabilistic system: N individuals occupy W resource states in it and produce entropy S over definite time periods. Resulting thermodynamics is however unusual because a second entropy, H, measures a typically social feature, inequality or diversity in the distribution of available resources. A symmetry phase transition takes place at Gini values 1/3, where realistic distributions become asymmetric. Four constraints act on S: expectedly, N and W, and new ones, diversity and interactions between individuals; the latter result from the two coordinates of a single point in the data, the peak. The occupation number of a job is either zero or one, suggesting Fermi-Dirac statistics for employment. Contrariwise, an indefinite nujmber of individuals can occupy a state defined as a quantile of income or of age, so Bose-Einstein statistics may be required. Indistinguishability rather than anonymity of individuals and resources is thus needed. Interactions between individuals define define classes of equivalence that happen to coincide with acceptable definitions of social classes or periods in human life. The entropy S is non-extensive and obtainable from data. Theoretical laws are compared to data in four different cases of economical or physiological diversity. Acceptable fits are found for all of them.
