Abstract:As dental alloys are used more and more widely in the dental field,adverse reactions caused by its corrosion are also increasing.The main corrosion form of dental alloys is electrochemical corrosion,and the influencing factors are alloy composition,pH,medium composition and different metals.Many researches have been done to improve the corrosion resistance of dental alloys,especially in the field of the composition change and surface modification.

Abstract:There is a very complicated electrolytical environment in oral cavity with plenty of microorganisms existing there. Various forms of corrosion would develop when metallic prosthesis functions in mouth. One important corrosive form is microbial corrosion. The metabolic products, including organic acid and inorganic acid, will affect the pH of the surface or interface of metallic prosthesis and make a change in composition of the medium, thus influencing the electron-chemical reaction and promoting the development of corrosion. The problem of develpoment of microbial corrosion on dental alloy in the oral environment lies in the primary condition that the bacteria adhere to the surface of alloy and form a relatively independent environment that promotes corrosion.

Abstract:Most metallic alloys are susceptible to corrosion in their service environments. One of the most practical and cost-effective ways to slow or stop corrosion is by application of a protective coating or paint. Coatings and paints can be applied to large surface areas and are protective, even though they are relatively thin. They can be applied rapidly and the associated material and labor cost is usually much less than the cost (or value) of the object being protected. Over the past 150 years, corrosion resistant coating and paint technology has evolved steadily, resulting in a vast array of products for protecting many different substrates under many different conditions. Coating technology is certainly a mature discipline, but the field continues to evolve as new substrates are developed and made available for application and as new coatings and application methods are devised to meet emerging demands and constraints. Over the past 30 years, the desire to lower the toxic hazard and pollution has strongly influenced coating technology. This has resulted in the emergence of new coating systems and methods of application. This chapter focuses on issues related to protective coatings and paints used for structural metals and alloys used in high volume applications.

Abstract:This article deals with the topic of atmospheric corrosion. Atmospheric corrosion causes damage to nearly 80% of all existing steel structures. The main parameters of atmospheric corrosion are the time of wetness (TOW), air temperature and aggressive corrosive agents such as chlorides, sulfur dioxide and others. Currently, low alloy steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance called weathering steels are used for the steel structures located in outdoor environment. A protective layer of corrosion products is created on the steel surface and this layer can reduce continuation of corrosion of steel. The time of wetness together with the effect of aggressive corrosive agents are various for surfaces oriented vertically or horizontally. Experimental tests of atmospheric weathering steel were carried out to monitor the impact of location and position of surface on the different constructions. These tests allow monitoring the development of corrosion products in real exposures. The article presents a part of the research, which includes monitoring the development of the thickness of corrosion products with regard to the position on the structure. Research is developed to refine of prediction models with the aim of improving determination of corrosion losses during the service life of the structure. Second part of these experiments is dedicated to measuring the deposition rate of chlorides. Chlorides have a corrosive impact on the steel surface. Under normal conditions the chlorides does not create suitable environment for the development of a protective layer of corrosion products.

Abstract:This study delves into the intricate corrosion behavior of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys in the challenging Antarctic marine atmosphere. Despite the harsh conditions and exceptionally low anthropogenic emissions in Antarctica, materials are still susceptible to severe corrosion. The investigation focuses on two materials: Q235 carbon steel and T2 copper. Both display distinct corrosion cases between their skyward and groundward sides due to the abrasive impact of persistent strong winds carrying ice particles and grit. Electrochemical reactions at the anode and cathode drive surface corrosion processes, involving Cl− and SO42−, ultimately leading to the formation of various corrosion products. The study highlights the role of sulfur-containing aerosols, Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and non-sea-salt sulfate (nss-SO42-) in corrosion processes, as well as the interaction between Cl− and copper in forming corrosion products. The findings emphasize the complex interplay of environmental factors like wind, ice cover, and aerosols with materials, leading to diverse corrosion products and surface transformations. Further research is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of corrosion challenges in extreme environments like Antarctica and to develop effective mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Corrosion destroys more than three percent of the world’s gross domestic product. Therefore, the design of highly corrosion-resistant materials is urgently needed. By breaking the classical alloy-design philosophy, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) possess unique microstructures, which are solid solutions with random arrangements of multiple elements. The particular locally-disordered chemical environment is expected to lead to unique corrosion-resistant properties. In this review, the studies of the corrosion-resistant HEAs during the last decade are summarized. The corrosion-resistant properties of HEAs in various aqueous environments and the corrosion behavior of HEA coatings are presented. The effects of environments, alloying elements, and processing methods on the corrosion resistance are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the possible directions of future work regarding the corrosion behavior of HEAs are suggested.

Abstract:Aluminum alloys are extensively used to manufacture mechanical components. However, when exposed to alkaline environments, like lubricants, refrigerants, or detergents, they can be corroded, reducing their durability. For this reason, the aim of this study is to investigate the influence of aggressive alkaline solutions (i.e., pH and presence of chlorides) on the corrosion resistance of three aluminum alloys (AA 5083-H111, AA 6082-T6, and AA 7075-T6) with and without anodizing treatments. Open circuit potential (EOCP) and anodic polarization measurements were carried out and typical corrosion parameters such as corrosion current density (icor) and corrosion rate (CR) were determined. Morphology of the corrosion attack and samples microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscope. Results show that corrosion behavior of the three investigated alloys is influenced by (i) the aggressiveness of the testing environments; (ii) the thickness of the anodizing treatment; (iii) the alloy chemical composition; (iv) the distribution of intermetallic phases in the aluminum matrix. Moreover, three galvanic series have been built also testing other metallic alloys commonly used in mechanical applications, i.e., carbon steel (C40), stainless-steel (AISI 304), and Cu-based alloys (Cu-Ni alloy and CW 617 N, respectively). Results clearly indicate that galvanic series play a fundamental role when it is necessary to select an alloy for a specific environment, highlighting the thermodynamic conditions for corrosion occurrence. On the other hand, kinetic measurements and microstructural studies carried out on the three aluminum alloys stress the importance of the surface treatments and relevant thickness as well as the effect of metal exposure. Future work will involve the study of other surface treatments on aluminum alloys and the evaluation of their corrosion behavior in acidic environments.

Abstract:It is well known that the poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is a key factor limiting their application. Field exposure is the most reliable means to evaluate the atmospheric corrosion performance of magnesium alloys. This article reviews the field exposure corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys in typical atmospheric environments (including the marine atmosphere, industrial atmosphere, etc.) in recent years. According to the literature review, it was found that there are significant regional differences in the atmospheric corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys, which is the result of the coupling of multiple factors in the atmospheric environment. By investigating the corrosion rate and corrosion products of different types of magnesium alloys in different environments, the corrosion mechanism of magnesium alloys in different environments was summarized. Specifically, environmental parameters such as atmospheric temperature, relative humidity, CO2, and chloride ion deposition rates in the marine atmospheric environment can affect the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys. The corrosion of magnesium alloys in different industrial atmospheric environments is mainly affected by atmospheric temperature and relative humidity, as well as atmospheric pollutants (such as SO2, CO2, NO2) and dust. This review provides assistance to the development of new corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys.

Abstract:Research on corrosion resistance of cast aluminum alloys is reviewed in this article. The effect of the main microstructural features of cast aluminum alloys such as secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS), eutectic silicon morphology, grain size, macrosegregation, microsegregation, and intermetallic compounds is discussed. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of cast aluminum alloys obtained by modern manufacturing processes such as semi-solid and additive manufacturing are analyzed. Finally, the protective effects provided by different coatings on the aluminum cast alloys—such as anodized, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), and laser—is reviewed. Some conclusions and future guidelines for future works are proposed.

Abstract:This work provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in modeling techniques for better understanding the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys. The present study encompasses the state‐of‐the‐art of computational approaches, highlighting their strengths and limitations. Transport models receive especial attention and certain challenges associated with the experimental validation of such models are also described. Corrosion remains a critical concern in various industries, particularly in applications involving aluminum alloys due to their widespread usage as light structural materials. This work provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in modeling techniques for better understanding the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys. The present study encompasses the state‐of‐the‐art of computational approaches, highlighting their strengths and limitations. Special attention is given to transport models, galvanic couples, localized corrosion, and the incorporation of different factors, such as pH variations, electrolyte thicknesses and dynamic electrolytes into corrosion models. Furthermore, the review delves into both bulk and atmospheric corrosion models. On the other hand, this work also emphasizes a clear differentiation between models designed for bare aluminum alloys and those tailored for coated ones. Additionally, it addresses certain challenges associated with the experimental validation of such models. This review concludes with perspectives on both sophisticated transport models to bridge the gap between industrial and academic investigations, as well as the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques in corrosion modeling, offering promising directions for future research in this field.

Abstract:We study specific features of corrosion protection of the metal structures suffering the anthropogenic (energy and ingredient) impact. It is shown that the pollution of fresh water, seawater, air, and soil with heavy metals increases the risk of anthropogenic accidents. We propose a procedure of complex integrated evaluation of the level of anthropogenic pollution of the media (both natural media, namely, atmospheric air, surface waters, and soils and technological media, namely, wastewater and working media). By using this procedure we establish the correlation dependences of the integral parameters of anthropogenic pollution on the corrosion resistance of steel and determine safe levels of the anthropogenic influence on the service life of the metal structures. The possibility of improvement of the level of corrosion protection with the help of efficient environmentally safe synergistic protective compositions based on the use of secondary raw materials (with utilization of the regional wastes) and with simultaneous lowering of the degree of anthropogenic pollution of the environment is demonstrated.
