Abstract:In this paper,two types of defects on the hot rolling plate,defined as type A and type B respectively,have been analyzed on the continuous casting of titanium-stabilized stainless steel(1Cr18Ni9Ti or 06Cr18Ni10Ti).The experimental results showed that the two types of defects were corresponded to slag entrapment and precipitation of TiN during solidification,respectively.When the liquid mould flux fluctuated in the meniscus,the slag was prone to be entrapped into the solidified shell or the melt in the first slab of one heat,which resulted in the type A defect.On the other way,the precipitation of TiN was the main reason for the type B defect,and TiN and Al2O3 as curved chain can be observed agglomerating on the plate.Furthermore,the molten steel was reoxidated by atmosphere during continuous casting,which was the precondition for adding nitrogen to be TiN.

Abstract:TiN inclusion in steel is easy to cause surface defects in ultra-low carbon steel. TiN was studied by analyzing their formation mechanisms, compositions, and morphology through SEM (scanning electron microscope) and EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Thermodynamic analysis through kinetic simulations of the different stages of RH degassing was conducted by the FactSageTM software package. TiN inclusions can distribute either randomly or in clusters with exogenous inclusions. Most of the TiN inclusions are regular cubic shapes. Some of them have a black center which is alumina inclusion. The alumina inclusions formed by reoxidation can catch TiN inclusions and combine with them because of the strong combining affinity between them. Ti is a strong nitride former in liquid steel, and TiN mostly forms during cooling or solidification. The maximum temperature is approximately 1, 430 °C. The growth of TiN inclusions can be controlled by adjusting the Ti and N contents (N< 30 ppm).

Abstract:Nonmetallic inclusions formed during the Ti-stabilized stainless steelmaking process can induce the clogging in the submerged entry nozzle during continuous casting. To investigate the formation mechanism of nonmetallic inclusions in Ti-stabilized stainless steel, steel specimens were taken at different stages in industrial trials. The characteristics of inclusions and the chemical compositions of steel were analysed. After 10 min of Al deoxidation, the main type of inclusions in samples was irregular MgO·Al2O3. With titanium addition after calcium treatment, the irregular dual phase CaO–TiOx–Al2O3–MgO inclusions were formed. The steel compositions of most samples were located in or close to the Al2O3–TiOx liquid oxide phase field. According to experiment and thermodynamic results, the solid CaTiO3 and/or CaO·2Al2O3 inclusions were formed during titanium addition when the molten steel contained more than 20 ppm calcium. The effect of the initial calcium content on the formation of Ca–Al–Ti–O inclusions during titanium addition was discussed.

Abstract:The effects of TiN inclusions on the oxidation behavior of modified stainless steels have been investigated systematically in this study. It was found that the oxidation rate of steel with TiN stringers is almost seven times faster than the clean one during the homogenized treatment. In the oxidation layers, the TiN stringers induce the spall fracture and facilitate the air permeation. At the oxidation interface, the TiN inclusions act as the nucleation sites for the oxides and promote the internal oxidation. The air permeation and internal oxidation causes the severe oxidation of modified austenitic stainless steels.

Abstract:This study describes an investigation into the improvement of castability, final surface quality and formability of titanium-stabilized AISI 409 ferritic stainless steel on an industrial scale. Non-metallic inclusions found in this industrially produced stainless steel were first characterized using SEM-EDS analyses through the INCA-Steel software platform. Inclusions were found to consist of a MgO·Al2O3 spinel core, which acted as heterogeneous nucleation site for titanium solubility products. Plant-scale experiments were conducted to either prevent the formation of spinel, or to modify it by calcium treatment. Modification to spherical dual-phase spinel-liquid matrix inclusions was achieved with calcium addition, which eliminated submerged entry nozzle clogging for this grade. Complete modification to homogeneous liquid calcium aluminates was achieved at high levels of dissolved aluminum. A mechanism was suggested to explain the extent of modification achieved.

Abstract:Titanium oxide inclusions in steel are well known to inhibit grain growth and act as nucleation sites for acicular ferrite because of absorbing manganese from the surrounding steel resulting in a manganese depleted zone around the inclusion. In this article, the inclusions resulting from TiO2 additions to low-alloyed C-Mn-Cr steel were studied. Different types of TiO2 containing materials were added to liquid steel before or during casting to get small titanium-oxide–rich inclusions in steel. The main goals were to find out what happens to TiO2 in liquid steel after addition and during cooling and to study further what type of inclusions are formed in the steel as a result of the TiO2 addition. Based on the thermodynamic calculations and the results of scanning electron microscope (SEM)-energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS) and SEM-electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis, TiO2 is first reduced to Ti3O5 in liquid steel at high temperatures and then to Ti2O3 during cooling at around 1573 K (1300 °C). Both reactions liberate oxygen, which reacts with Ti, Mn, and Al forming complex Ti2O3-rich inclusions. The results also show that TiO2 additions result in more TiOx + MnO inclusions compared with experiments with Ti addition and that the absolute amount of manganese present in the inclusions is much higher in experiments with TiO2 addition than in experiments with Ti additions.

Abstract:The quantitative analysis of inclusion and microstructure characteristics in the steels with TiN additions has been studied. The typical inclusion was detected to be a TiN + Mn‐Al‐Si‐Ti‐O + MnS phase. This identification was based on the measurements of scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectrometer (SEM‐EDS), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), which equipped wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (WDS), and equilibrium calculations by using the commercial software Thermo‐Calc. TiN was found to be the effective nucleation site for the formation of intragranular ferrite (IGF). Furthermore, the increased inclusion size led to the increased probability of IGF nucleation. In addition, this probability of IGF nucleation was slightly decreased with the increased sulfur content. This tendency could fit the tendency of the area fraction of IGF in the steels containing different sulfur contents. The present work provides a quantitative study of inclusion and microstructure characteristics in the steels with TiN additions. The effect of inclusion size on the probability of IGF nucleation in the present samples is mainly focused to be discussed. This figure shows a binary image of the typical microstructure containing intragranular ferrite and grain boundary ferrite in this work.

Abstract:The evolution mechanism of oxide inclusions in Ti-bearing AISI 443 stainless steel was investigated by industrial experiment and thermodynamic calculation. The chemical compositions of steel and the characteristics of inclusions in steel were analyzed. After the addition of Al, the main type of inclusions in molten steel was irregular MgO·Al2O3 spinel. The MgO·Al2O3 inclusions were modified to be spherical CaO-Al2O3-MgO inclusions after calcium treatment. Thermodynamic calculation results indicated that several ppm Ca could significantly expand the liquid oxide phase field and decrease the stability of spinel. After titanium addition, two types of inclusions were formed: spherical Al2O3-TiOx inclusions and complex CaO-TiOx-Al2O3-MgO inclusions. The compositions of steel after Ti addition were mostly located in Al2O3-TiOx stability phase field. Based on the characteristics of inclusions in steel and thermodynamic calculation, inclusions consisting of liquid and CaTiO3 were formed in molten steel with more than 10 ppm Ca during the Ti addition process. The evolution mechanism of oxide inclusions was discussed with the consideration of the initial calcium content before Ti addition.

Abstract:The TiN–MnS complex inclusions in Al-killed titanium alloyed interstitial free steel were extracted from the slabs using an electrolytic aqueous solution method. Scanning electron microscopy with energy spectroscopy analysis and an automatic scanning electron microscope were employed to analyze the size and distribution of TiN–MnS inclusions in the thickness direction of the slab. It was found that TiN–MnS complex inclusions were primarily concentrated in the 1/4 thickness direction from the inner and outer surfaces, and the size of the complex inclusions in the slab center was approximately 8 μm. TiN began to precipitate when the solidification rate reached 0.646–0.680 in the δ phase, and MnS would appear in the γ phase when the solidification rate exceeded 0.450 through thermodynamic analysis. Abstract:In this study, the precipitation, aggregation, and dissolution behaviors of TiN inclusions on the surface of liquid GCr15 bearing steel have been investigated by combining the observations of confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) with those obtained from energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and theoretical analysis. The kinetic results show that the initial concentration of Ti and N are 0.0078 and 0.0049, respectively, the precipitation temperature is between 1640 K and 1680 K (1367 °C and 1407 °C), and the local cooling rate is between 0.5 and 10 K/s; TiN inclusion can precipitate only when the solid fraction is higher than 0.847 and its precipitation radius is between 1 and 6 μm. The precipitation radius of a TiN inclusion in the GCr15 bearing steel sheet can be reduced by decreasing the N content and increasing the cooling strength. The aggregation and densification of multi-particle aggregated TiN inclusions are verified by CLSM observation and theoretical analysis. The inclusions are aggregated by the cavity bridge force (CBF), and the aggregated TiN is formed by solid-phase sintering. The results of force analysis show that CBF plays a dominant role in the aggregation process of the inclusions. The atomic ratio of Ti and V obtained by EDS is 18:1, which may melt TiN and form the liquid inclusion at 1688 K (1415 °C) observed by CLSM. The theoretical analysis is conducted for the dissolution of the TiN inclusions observed by CLSM, which shows that the dissolution of the TiN inclusions is related to the size of the inclusions; the larger the size, the greater the dissolution rate. The long-strip TiN inclusion may be formed by the Ostwald ripening of two TiN inclusions. The TiN inclusions smaller than 3 μm in the GCr15 bearing steel may be formed by the dissolved Ti and N generated by the dissolution of TiN.

Abstract:A model for TiN (Titanium Nitride) inclusions precipitation was developed to investigate the precipitation and growth behavior of TiN inclusions during slab solidification for the entire cross-section of Titanium Micro-alloyed Steel (0.0077 wt%N, 0.12 wt%Ti) slabs. The model integrates the principles of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and kinetics to predict the size and concentration of TiN inclusions in slabs. The outcomes of the TiN inclusions precipitation model showed that the TiN inclusions size on the surface of the slab was 2.82 μm, the central TiN inclusions size was 10.07 μm, and the total TiN inclusions concentration was 0.073 wt%. The distribution of TiN inclusions in the slabs was ascertained by automated scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy inclusion analysis (AZtec Steel system). The results showed a sharp decrease in the number density of TiN inclusions number and an increase in the average size from the surface to the center of the slab. The model validation revealed that the model might accurately simulate the maximum size of TiN inclusions in the slab. However, the presence of micron-sized TiN particles in the steel matrix resulted in an overestimation of the modelled TiN concentration as compared to the actual TiN concentration.

Abstract:As a kind of high-strength steel, low-carbon titanium-containing micro-alloyed steel has been widely used in the industry recently. Fine TiN precipitates can refine the austenite grains, improve the toughness of the steel, strengthen the good formability and weldability of the steel, and reduce the production costs of the process. However, due to the improper technical operations or steps, a large amount of TiN will precipitate in the billet, which will affect the crack sensitivity of the steel. According to the thermodynamic calculation results, when the nitrogen content is reduced from 50 ppm to 20 ppm, the precipitation temperature of TiN can be reduced to 1400 °C, whilst the amount of TiN precipitate quantity will be significantly reduced. This article conducted the Oxygen and Nitrogen Analysis towards the samples throughout the entire steelmaking process. The results indicated an abnormal increase in nitrogen content during the Ladle Furnace (LF) process. In addition to the reaction between air and molten steel, the raw and auxiliary materials for steelmaking may also be the reasons which caused the increase of nitrogen content in the molten steel, as they contain nitrogen as well. However, there are only a small number of studies that had explored the impact of raw and auxiliary materials on steel quality. This article investigated the cleanliness of ferrotitanium alloys. The results showed that the cleanliness (inclusions and nitrogen content) of TiFe-30 is much higher than that of TiFe-70. When TiFe-70 was replaced by TiFe-30 for steelmaking, the content of nitrogen in the molten steel as well as the content of TiN were reduced, whilst the size of TiN was correspondingly decreased. In this experiment, not only was the performance of steel improved, the cost of steelmaking was also reduced. At last, this work could also awaken the judgment standards for steelmaking alloys.

Abstract:Large-sized titanium-containing inclusion clusters seriously affect the continuous casting and performance of high titanium wear-resistant steel. In the current work, thermodynamic calculations were firstly conducted to predict the formation of various complex TiN inclusions, viz , TiO x -TiN, Al 2 O 3 -TiN and LaAlO 3 -TiN. Based on that, laboratory-scale experiments were designed to prepare samples containing a single type of complex TiN inclusions. The agglomeration characterizes of different complex inclusions were compared by combing in-situ observation based on confocal laser scanning microscopy and Newtonian motion equation. Furthermore, the Kralchevsky-Paunov model was used to study the influences of density and size on the agglomeration behavior of complex TiN inclusions. The result shows that the attractive force between TiO x -TiN complex inclusions increases from 1.93×10 -18 to 4.34×10 -17 N, while it was 3.41×10 -17 to 5.12×10 -16 N for Al 2 O 3 -TiN complex inclusions and 6.42×10 -18 to 1.14×10 -16 N for LaAlO 3 -TiN inclusions. Based on the experimental results and theoretical calculation, the agglomeration tendency of Al 2 O 3 -TiN is the strongest due to the considered size and compared to the TiO x -TiN inclusions, the stronger agglomeration tendency of LaAlO 3 -TiN ones can be attributed to their higher density.

Abstract:To study the effects of Al and Ti additions on the formation of inclusions in nickel-based superalloys, laboratory experiments were carried out at 1823 K. We observed mainly pure Al2O3 inclusions and some Al2O3–TixOy and Al2O3(–TixOy)–titanium nitride (TiN) composite inclusions in the nickel-based alloy with initial deoxidants of 0.3–0.7% Al and 0.7–1.2% Ti (wt%). The total Ti content in the inclusions increased slightly with an increasing amount of added Ti. Thermodynamic calculations were conducted to understand the formation mechanism of the inclusions and control the inclusions. The predominance diagram obtained for the Al–Ti–O inclusions in the nickel-based superalloy system was based on Factsage and classical thermodynamic calculations. The inclusions obtained from experiments were not completely consistent with the Factsage calculated results; however, they agreed well with the classical thermodynamic calculation. The calculated results indicated that the thermodynamic stable inclusion was Al2O3 in liquid K4169 alloy at 1823 K. The oxygen content should be controlled to< 10 ppm to avoid the formation of Al2O3 inclusions in the superalloy. Thermodynamic results indicated the initial precipitation of TiN in the FCC phase of the superalloy from 963 to 1403 K. The precipitation temperature of TiN decreased with the decrease of N content and increase in Ti content in the superalloy. The precipitation of TiN was not only dependent on the contents of Ti and N in a sample but also on the cooling conditions.

Study on the Formation and Control of TiN Inclusion in Mushy Zone for High Ti Microalloyed Steel

Abstract:The coarse TiN inclusions can act as potential fracture initiation sites and deteriorate the impact toughness of steels. The experimental observation results indicated that CaS and TiN inclusions precipitated in solidification mushy zone. Meanwhile, it was found that CaS inclusions could act effectively a heterogeneous nucleation substrate for the precipitation of TiN inclusions, and the size of TiN inclusions with CaS core was obviously larger than those TiN inclusions without CaS core. Additionally, the thermodynamic calculation result showed that TiN inclusions began to precipitate at the end of solidification from the dendrites front; moreover, the preexisted CaS inclusions promoted the formation of TiN inclusions. Decreasing sulfur and nitrogen content could significantly reduce precipitation temperature and growth time of CaS and TiN inclusions in mushy zone. Furthermore, TiN inclusions could be prevented from precipitation at the surface of CaS inclusions when the S content of molten steel was below 0.0008 wt%.
Effect of Ti Addition on Non‐Metallic Inclusion Characteristics in TRIP Steel

Abstract:The effect of Ti addition on the formation and evolution of inclusions in high‐Al TRIP steel is investigated by performing a series of laboratory experiments and thermodynamic calculations for different quantities and sequences of Ti addition. Before the addition of Al and Ti, the main inclusions are spherical Mn‐Si‐Al‐O oxide particles. The addition of Al transforms the Mn‐Si‐Al‐O inclusions to Al2O3 inclusion. After subsequent addition of 0.02 wt% Ti, the main inclusions are Al2O3, AlN, Al2O3‐AlN, Al2O3‐TiN, and Al2O3‐AlN‐TiN. However, after subsequent addition of 0.05 or 0.12 wt% Ti to molten steel, the main inclusions are Al2O3, TiN, and Al2O3‐TiN, and almost no AlN is observed. Using different addition sequences of Al and Ti to high‐Al TRIP steel does not result in significant differences in the types of inclusions. Adding Ti to molten steel does not transform Al2O3 to Ti‐oxides, whereas Al addition causes Ti‐oxides to be transformed to Al2O3. Importantly, adding over 0.05 wt% Ti to TRIP steel prevents the formation of AlN inclusion.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanosize TiO 2 particles were added directly into welding molten pool through electrode for the difficulty of accurate control of oxygen potential and production processing parameters. The characteristics of phase transformation and thermal behavior of inclusions for Fe-C-Mn-Si-Ti-O system and Fe-C-Mn-Si-TiO 2 system were analyzed. Results show that the added TiO 2 particles are more helpful for the formation of Mn-Ti-O complex inclusion and can induce the decrease of phase transformation temperature of austenite to ferrite. Intragranular ferrite can be obtained under the condition of continuous cooling transformation with cooling rate of 293 K/s–373 K/s. The inclusions in steel welds are spherical in shape and mainly composed of TiO 2 , Ti 3 O 5 , Ti 2 O 3 , MnO, and SiO 2 . The mean size of inclusions is 0.67 μ m. These complex inclusions can supply a large number of nucleating cores for their precipitation at higher temperature, which will disturb the growth of columnar crystal during solidification. Moreover, Mn-containing titanium oxides will promote the transformation of austenite to intragranular ferrite for the formation of manganese depleted zones in steel welds around oxides. So it can be concluded that nanosize titanium oxide added directly in welding molten pool can be effectively used to control phase transformation and achieve fine and favorable microstructure.

Characteristics and Formation Mechanism of Complex TiN Inclusions in 20CrMnTi Gear Steel

Abstract:In this paper, in order to study the effect of oxides on the formation of complex TiN inclusions in 20CrMnTi steel, based on the two end quenching specimens with different components, the characteristics of complex TiN inclusions and oxides were observed and analyzed, and the formation mechanism of complex TiN inclusions was discussed. The results indicate the compositions of core oxides are regularly distributed in the MgAl2O4–TiOx composition line for different complex TiN inclusions, and the difference is the TiOx content. The complex TiN inclusions can be divided into two types, Type 1 and Type 2, based on the compositions of core oxides. For Type 1, TiOx content of core oxides are below 52%, while for Type 2, TiOx content of core oxides are over 52%. The core oxides of Type 1 have bigger size at the range of 1–3 µm, and lower nucleation capability for TiN inclusions. The core oxides of Type 2 have smaller size at the range of 0.5–2 µm, and higher nucleation capability for TiN inclusions. For Type 1, the MgAl2O4–TiOx oxides preexisting in molten steel are the heterogeneous nucleation cores of TiN inclusions during solidification. For Type 2, the tiny oxides newly formed during solidification are the nucleation cores of TiN inclusions. By controlling the characteristics of oxides, the characteristics of TiN inclusions can be controlled, which provides a new idea for the control of TiN inclusions in 20CrMnTi gear steel.

Abstract:Because of its superior properties, stainless steel has been widely used for many applications. Nonmetallic inclusions can influence the quality of stainless steel products. A set of samples was used to track the response of inclusion composition during processing of a heat of titanium-bearing 18% chromium steel, from deoxidation after decarburization, to the solidified slab. The oxide inclusions responded as expected to additions of deoxidizers and calcium treatment, changing from silica to alumina and spinels, and then to calcium aluminates. The samples confirmed that titanium nitride can nucleate on liquid calcium aluminate during steel solidification.

Abstract:The precipitation and growth behavior of titanium nitride (TiN) inclusions during the continuous casting of high carbon wire rod grade steel SWRH 72A was investigated based on the thermodynamic calculations. Titanium is a tramp element in this grade and its pick up in liquid steel mainly takes place from the ladle alloy additions. Titanium in liquid steel is the limiting factor for the growth of TiN inclusions as it diffuses slowly in steel than nitrogen and enriches in interdendritic liquid regions creating favorable conditions for TiN precipitation. It was also observed from this study that the temperature for the formation of TiN inclusion decreased with decrease in titanium for a fixed nitrogen. Titanium nitride inclusions precipitate in steel during solidification even with low titanium and nitrogen content due to the effect of elemental segregation. Solidification segregation of both titanium and nitrogen increased with increase in cooling rate and their segregation tendency increased rapidly with increasing solidification fraction. The effect of titanium, nitrogen and cooling rate on the growth radius of titanium nitride inclusion was studied and validated with actual inclusion measurement.
