Abstract:Samples of polyethylene with extended-chain crystal morphology, obtained by crystallization under high pressure, were subjected to uniaxial compression to various strains. Accompanying structural changes were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. At the true strain of e = 0.2–0.3 the microbuckling instability was observed in longitudinally loaded lamellae, resulting in the formation of angular kinks. This induced a rapid reorientation of the lamellae, facilitating their further deformation by crystallographic slip. Microbuckling instability was found to occur earlier than in samples with folded-chain crystal morphology (e = 0.3–0.4) due to a smaller ratio of the amorphous to crystalline layer thickness. SEM observations demonstrated that the microbuckling instability begins with small undulation in long lamellae. Sharp angular lamellar kinks develop from the initial undulation through intense plastic deformation by crystallographic slip along the chain direction. The same slip system was found to operate throughout the kink, including the tip region as well as both limbs. In contrast to thin folded-chain lamellae that often undergo fragmentation during deformation, the thick extended-chain lamellae deform stably by chain slip and retain their continuity up to high strains, e > 1.6. This stability of deformation is related to the large thickness of extended-chain lamellae.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to deeply understand the micro - buckling instability and other deformation instabilities that occur during the plastic deformation of high - density polyethylene (HDPE), especially in samples with extended - chain crystal morphology. Specifically, the author hopes to obtain direct microscopic evidence of these phenomena through experiments and identify the active deformation mechanisms. ### Main Research Questions 1. **Micro - buckling Instability**: - Research on the micro - buckling instability of HDPE samples with extended - chain crystal morphology under uniaxial compression. - Explore how this instability affects the deformation behavior of the material, especially the formation of angular folds observed at true strains \(e = 0.2 - 0.3\). 2. **Deformation Mechanisms**: - Analyze the accompanying structural changes through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the deformation mechanisms of HDPE with extended - chain crystal morphology at different strains. - Compare the differences in deformation behavior between extended - chain crystal and folded - chain crystal morphology samples, especially the occurrence time and mode of micro - buckling instability. 3. **Deformation Paths**: - Research how micro - buckling instability promotes the activation of conventional deformation mechanisms such as crystal - plane slip, thereby providing new and easier deformation paths for the material. - Analyze how thick extended - chain crystal wafers can deform stably at high strains without fragmentation. ### Experimental Design To achieve the above goals, the author selected three high - density polyethylenes (H3, H4, H5) with different molecular weights and degrees of branching, and prepared samples with extended - chain crystal morphology through high - pressure crystallization. Then, uniaxial compression experiments were carried out on these samples, and detailed characterizations were made by means such as DSC and SEM. ### Key Findings - At true strains \(e = 0.2 - 0.3\), the micro - buckling instability of extended - chain crystal wafers was observed, and angular folds were formed. - This instability led to the rapid re - orientation of the wafers and promoted the activation of the crystal - plane slip mechanism. - Extended - chain crystal wafers exhibited micro - buckling instability earlier than folded - chain crystal wafers because they had a smaller ratio of amorphous layer to crystalline layer thickness. - SEM observations showed that micro - buckling instability began with small ripples in long wafers and eventually developed into acute - angled folds. - Thick extended - chain crystal wafers deformed stably through chain - slip at high strains, maintaining continuity, without fragmentation as in the case of thin folded - chain crystal wafers. ### Summary This study aims to reveal the micro - buckling instability in HDPE with extended - chain crystal morphology during plastic deformation and its influence on deformation mechanisms through experiments and microscopic analysis, providing an important basis for further understanding the complex deformation behavior of semi - crystalline polymers.
