Abstract:We investigate disorder-driven topological phase transitions in quantized electric quadrupole insulators. We show that chiral symmetry can protect the quantization of the quadrupole moment $q_{xy}$, such that the higher-order topological invariant is well-defined even when disorder has broken all crystalline symmetries. Moreover, nonvanishing $q_{xy}$ and consequent corner modes can be induced from a trivial insulating phase by disorder that preserves chiral symmetry. The critical points of such topological phase transitions are marked by the occurrence of extended boundary states even in the presence of strong disorder. We provide a systematic characterization of these disorder-driven topological phase transitions from both bulk and boundary descriptions.

Abstract:Disorder, traditionally believed to hinder the propagation of waves. has recently been shown to prompt the occurrence of topological phase transitions. For example, when disorder strength continuously increases and surpasses certain critical value, a phase transition from topologically trivial to nontrivial insulating phases occurs. However, in the parameter domain of the nontrivial phase, whether there exists a finer phase diagram that can be further classified by different disorder strengths is still unclear. Here we present a successive topological phase transition driven by the disorder strength in a higher-order topological insulator with long-range couplings. As the strength of the disorder gradually increases, the real-space topological invariant of the system undergoes a consecutive change from 0 to 4, accompanied by the stepped increase in the number of boundary-localized corner states. Our work opens an avenue for utilizing disorder to induce phase transitions among different higher-order topological insulators.

Disorder-Induced Phase Transitions in Three-Dimensional Chiral Second-Order Topological Insulator

Abstract:Topological insulators have been extended to higher-order versions that possess topological hinge or corner states in lower dimensions. However, their robustness against disorder is still unclear. Here, we theoretically investigate the phase transitions of three-dimensional (3D) chiral second-order topological insulator (SOTI) in the presence of disorders. Our results show that, by increasing disorder strength, the nonzero densities of states of side surface and bulk emerge at critical disorder strengths of $W_{S}$ and $W_{B}$, respectively. The spectral function indicates that the bulk gap is only closed at one of the $R_{4z}\mathcal{T}$-invariant points, i.e., $\Gamma_{3}$. The closing of side surface gap or bulk gap is ascribed to the significant decrease of the elastic mean free time of quasi-particles. Because of the localization of side surface states, we find that the 3D chiral SOTI is robust at an averaged quantized conductance of $2e^{2}/h$ with disorder strength up to $W_{B}$. When the disorder strength is beyond $W_{B}$, the 3D chiral SOTI is then successively driven into two phases, i.e., diffusive metallic phase and Anderson insulating phase. Furthermore, an averaged conductance plateau of $e^{2}/h$ emerges in the diffusive metallic phase.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of disorder on topologically nontrivial states in a two-dimensional (2D) mechanical system. We first propose a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator based on an out-of-plane spring-mass model and analytically study the interplay between the disorder and topology in both topologically trivial and nontrivial systems. We adopt the spin Bott index to characterize the topological property in disordered mechanical systems. By tracking the evolution of the spin Bott index with the increase of disorders, we quantitatively demonstrate the disorder induced transition from a topologically nontrivial QSH insulator to a trivial insulator. We then validate the topological phase transition through transient analysis in discrete lattices. Finally, we design a phononic crystal based on the discrete spring-mass model and numerically verify the topologically protected states along the boundary between the trivial insulator and disordered topological QSH insulator in a continuous system. This work puts a step forward in understanding the role of disorder in a 2D topological classical system.

Abstract:Higher-order topological insulators are established as topological crystalline insulators protected by crystalline symmetries. One celebrated example is the second-order topological insulator in three dimensions that hosts chiral hinge modes protected by crystalline symmetries. Since amorphous solids are ubiquitous, it is important to ask whether such a second-order topological insulator can exist in an amorphous system without any spatial order. Here we predict the existence of a secondorder topological insulating phase in an amorphous system without any crystalline symmetry. Such a topological phase manifests in the winding number of the quadrupole moment, the quantized longitudinal conductance and the hinge states. Furthermore, in stark contrast to the viewpoint that structural disorder should be detrimental to the higher-order topological phase, we remarkably find that structural disorder can induce a second-order topological insulator from a topologically trivial phase in a regular geometry. We finally demonstrate the existence of a second-order topological phase in amorphous systems with time-reversal symmetry.
Disorder-Induced Topological Transitions in a Multilayer Topological Insulator

Abstract:We examine the impact of non-magnetic disorder on the electronic states of a multilayer structure comprising layers of both topological and conventional band insulators. Employing the Burkov-Balents model with renormalized tunneling parameters, we generate phase diagrams correlating with disorder, demonstrating that non-magnetic disorder can induce transitions between distinct topological phases. The subsequent section of our investigation focuses on the scenario where disorder is unevenly distributed across layers, resulting in fluctuations of the interlayer tunneling parameter - termed off-diagonal disorder. Furthermore, we determine the density of states employing the self-consistent single-site diagram technique, expanding the Green function in relation to the interlayer tunneling parameter (locator method). Our findings reveal that off-diagonal disorder engenders delocalized bulk states within the band gap. The emergence of these states may lead to the breakdown of the anomalous quantum Hall effect (AQHE) phase, a phenomenon that has garnered significant attention from researchers in the realm of topological heterostructures. Nonetheless, our results affirm the stability of the Weyl semimetal phase even under substantial off-diagonal disorder.

Structural disorder-induced topological phase transitions in quasicrystals

Abstract:Recently, the structural disorder-induced topological phase transitions in periodic systems have attracted much attention. However, in aperiodic systems such as quasicrystalline systems, the interplay between structural disorder and band topology is still unclear. In this work, we investigate the effects of structural disorder on a quantum spin Hall insulator phase and a higher-order topological phase in a two-dimensional Amman-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice, respectively. We demonstrate that the structural disorder can induce a topological phase transition from a quasicrystalline normal insulator phase to an amorphous quantum spin Hall insulator phase, which is confirmed by bulk gap closing and reopening, robust edge states, quantized spin Bott index and conductance. Furthermore, the structural disorder-induced higher-order topological phase transition from a quasicrystalline normal insulator phase to an amorphous higher-order topological phase characterized by quantized quadrupole moment and topological corner states is also found. More strikingly, the disorder-induced higher-order topological insulator with eight corner states represents a distinctive topological state that eludes realization in conventional crystalline systems. Our work extends the study of the interplay between disorder effects and topologies to quasicrystalline and amorphous systems.

Abstract:We reconsider the phase diagram of a three-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator in the presence of short-ranged potential disorder with the insight that non-perturbative rare states destabilize the noninteracting Dirac semimetal critical point separating different topological phases. Based on our numerical data on the density of states, conductivity, and wavefunctions, we argue that the putative Dirac semimetal line is destabilized into a diffusive metal phase of finite extent due to non-perturbative effects of rare regions. We discuss the implications of these results for past and current experiments on doped topological insulators.

Abstract:Effects of disorder on two-dimensional Z2 topological insulator are studied numerically by the transfer matrix method. Based on the scaling analysis, the phase diagram is derived for a model of HgTe quantum well as a function of disorder strength and magnitude of the energy gap. In the presence of sz non-conserving spin-orbit coupling, a finite metallic region is found that partitions the two topologically distinct insulating phases. As disorder increases, a narrow-gap topologically trivial insulator undergoes a series of transitions; first to metal, second to topological insulator, third to metal, and finally back to trivial insulator. We show that this multiple transition is a consequence of two disorder effects; renormalization of the band gap, and Anderson localization. The metallic region found in the scaling analysis corresponds roughly to the region of finite density of states at the Fermi level evaluated in the self-consistent Born approximation.
First-order quantum phase transition in three-dimensional topological band insulators

Abstract:Topological states of matter are characterized by global topological invariants which change their value across a topological quantum phase transition. It is commonly assumed that the transition between topologically distinct noninteracting gapped phases of fermions is necessarily accompanied by the closing of the band gap as long as the symmetries of the system are maintained. We show that such a quantum phase transition is possible without closing the gap in the case of a three-dimensional topological band insulator. We demonstrate this by calculating the free energy of the minimal model for a topological insulator, the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model, and show that as the band curvature continuously varies, a jump between the band gap minima corresponding to the topologically trivial and nontrivial insulators occurs. Therefore, this first order phase transition is a generic feature of three-dimensional topological band insulators. For a certain parameter range we predict a re-entrant topological phase transition. We discuss our findings in connection with the recent experimental observation of a discontinuous topological phase transition in a family of topological crystalline insulators.

Abstract:Normal superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling have been explored as candidate systems of topological superconductors. Here we present a comparative theoretical study of the effects of different types of disorder on the topological phases of two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupled superconductors. First, we show that a topologically trivial superconductor can be driven into a chiral topological superconductor upon diluted doping of isolated magnetic disorder, which close and reopen the quasiparticle gap of the paired electrons in a nontrivial manner. Secondly, the superconducting nature of a topological superconductor is found to be robust against Anderson disorder, but the topological nature is not, converting the system into a topologically trivial state even in the weak scattering limit. These topological phase transitions are distinctly characterized by variations in the topological invariant. We discuss the central findings in connection with existing experiments, and provide new schemes towards eventual realization of topological superconductors.

Abstract:We demonstrate non-Hermitian topological phase transitions induced solely by imaginary disorder. Starting from the trivial phase in the well-known Benalcazar, Bernevig, and Hughes model, we find that adding sufficient imaginary disorder to the trivial bulk can lead to a higher-order topological insulator supporting topological corner-localized states. In experiments, we elaborately design a two-dimensional reconfigurable acoustic lattice with a loss configuration that can be randomly set. By increasing the strength of lossy disorder, we observe the transitions from a trivial to a higher-order topological phase and subsequently to a gapless phase. To further show that imaginary disorder offers an alternative degree of freedom for controlling topological phases, we propose a non-Hermitian topological disclination state induced by imaginary disorder. Our work demonstrates an example of a non-Hermitian higher -order topological Anderson insulator and offers a reconfigurable platform to study the interplay between non-Hermitian disorder and topological phases.

Abstract:In this work, we study the disorder and phase diagrams of two-dimensional higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs). We concentrate on two cases: (i) bulk-corner correspondence and (ii) edge-corner correspondence. For the bulk-corner correspondence case, we demonstrate the existence of the mobility gaps and clarify the related topological invariant that characterizes the mobility gap. Furthermore, we find that, while the system preserves the bulk-corner correspondence in the presence of disorder, the corner states are protected by the mobility gap instead of the bulk gap. For the edge-corner correspondence case, we show that the bulk mobility gap and edge band gaps of HOTIs are no longer closed simultaneously. Therefore, a rich phase diagram is obtained, including various disorder-induced phase transition processes. Notably, a disorder-induced transition from the nontrivial to trivial phase is realized, distinguishing the HOTIs from the other topological states. Our results deepen the understanding of the topological features and the related phase transitions of disordered HOTIs.

Abstract:Generic non-magnetic disorder effects on topological quantum critical points (TQCP), which intervene between the three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator and an ordinary insulator, are investigated in this work. We first show that, in such 3D TQCP, any backward-scattering process mediated by chemical-potential-type impurity is always cancelled by its time-reversal (T-reversal) counter-process because of the nontrivial Berry phase supported by these two processes in the momentum space. However, this cancellation can be generalized into only those backward-scattering processes that conserve a certain internal degree of freedom, i.e. the parity density, while the 'absolute' stability of the TQCP against any non-magnetic disorders is required by the bulk-edge correspondence. Motivated by this, we further derive the self-consistent Born-phase diagram and the quantum conductivity correction in the presence of generic non-magnetic disorder potentials. The distinctions and similarities between the case with only the chemical-potential-type disorder and that with the generic non-magnetic disorders are summarized.

Third-order topological insulator induced by disorder

Abstract:We have found the first instance of a third-order topological Anderson insulator (TOTAI). This disorder-induced topological phase is gapped and characterized by a quantized octupole moment and topologically protected corner states, as revealed by a detailed numerically exact analysis. We also find that the disorder-induced transition into the TOTAI phase can be analytically captured with remarkable accuracy using the self-consistent Born approximation. For a larger disorder strength, the TOTAI undergoes a transition to a trivial diffusive metal, that in turn becomes an Anderson insulator at even larger disorder. Our findings show that disorder can induce third-order topological phases in 3D, therefore extending the class of known higher-order topological Anderson insulators.

Abstract:The breaking of time reversal symmetry in topological insulators may create previously unknown quantum effects. We observed a magnetic quantum phase transition in Cr-doped Bi2(SexTe1-x)3 topological insulator films grown by means of molecular beam epitaxy. Across the critical point, a topological quantum phase transition is revealed through both angle-resolved photoemission measurements and density functional theory calculations. We present strong evidence that the bulk band topology is the fundamental driving force for the magnetic quantum phase transition. The tunable topological and magnetic properties in this system are well suited for realizing the exotic topological quantum phenomena in magnetic topological insulators.

Abstract:Disorder effects inevitably exist in realistic samples, manifesting in various physical properties. In this paper, we review the recent progress in understanding the disorder effects on quantum transport and quantum phase transition properties in low-dimensional superconducting and topological systems. As a consequence of the pronounced quantum fluctuation in low-dimensional systems, rare events drastically change the physical characteristics and underlying microscopic transport process in these systems, which are beyond the traditional paradigms. Associating with recent experimental observations, we emphasize the microscopic mechanism for disordered Ising superconductivity, the quantum Griffiths singularity of superconductor metal transition and the discrete scale invariance in topological materials.
Disorder-induced topological quantum phase transitions in multi-gap Euler semimetals

Abstract:We study the effect of disorder in systems having a non-trivial Euler class. As these recently proposed multi-gap topological phases come about by braiding non-Abelian charged band nodes residing between different bands to induce stable pairs within isolated band subspaces, novel properties may be expected. Namely, a~modified stability and critical phases under the unbraiding to metals can arise, when the disorder preserves the underlying $C_2\cal{T}$ or $\cal{P}\cal{T}$ symmetry on average. Employing elaborate numerical computations, we verify the robustness of associated topology by evaluating the changes in the average densities of states and conductivities for different types of disorders. Upon performing a scaling analysis around the corresponding quantum critical points we retrieve a universality for the localization length exponent of $\nu = 1.4 \pm 0.1$ for Euler-protected phases, relating to two-dimensional percolation models. We generically find that quenched disorder drives Euler semimetals into critical metallic phases. Finally, we show that magnetic disorder can also induce topological transitions to quantum anomalous Hall plaquettes with local Chern numbers determined by the initial value of the Euler invariant.
