Abstract:This chapter covers a selection of the range of multispacecraft techniques that have been initially developed to analyze Cluster data. We begin the chapter with a short introduction, following this with an account of the methods and their application. The topics are separated into those dealing with magnetic field gradients and topology (which include the curlometer, magnetic rotation analysis, and least squares approach); magnetic field reconstruction and the analysis of magnetic field nulls (which are significant for magnetic reconnection and other geometries); time series analysis, adapted for multispacecraft data (including boundary identification, dimensional, and motion analysis); and wave vector analysis methods in the Fourier domain.

Abstract:In situ spacecraft observations are critical to our study and understanding of the various phenomena that couple mass, momentum, and energy throughout near‐Earth space and beyond. However, on‐orbit telemetry constraints can severely limit the capability of spacecraft to transmit high‐cadence data, and missions are often only able to telemeter a small percentage of their captured data at full rate. This presents a programmatic need to prioritize intervals with the highest probability of enabling the mission's science goals. Larger missions such as the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission (MMS) aim to solve this problem with a Scientist‐In‐The‐Loop (SITL), where a domain expert flags intervals of time with potentially interesting data for high‐cadence data downlink and subsequent study. Although suitable for some missions, the SITL solution is not always feasible, especially for low‐cost missions such as CubeSats and NanoSats. This manuscript presents a generalizable method for the detection of anomalous data points in spacecraft observations, enabling rapid data prioritization without substantial computational overhead or the need for additional infrastructure on the ground. Specifically, Principal Components Analysis and One‐Class Support Vector Machines are used to generate an alternative representation of the data and provide an indication, for each point, of the data's potential for scientific utility. The technique's performance and generalizability is demonstrated through application to intervals of observations, including magnetic field data and plasma moments, from the CASSIOPE e‐POP/Swarm‐Echo and MMS missions.

Investigating the Magnetic Structure of Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections using Simultaneous Multi-Spacecraft In situ Measurements

Abstract:In situ measurements from spacecraft typically provide a time series at a single location through coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and they have been one of the main methods to investigate CMEs. CME properties derived from these in situ measurements are affected by temporal changes that occur as the CME passes over the spacecraft, such as radial expansion and ageing, as well as spatial variations within a CME. This study uses multi-spacecraft measurements of the same CME at close separations to investigate both the spatial variability (how different a CME profile is when probed by two spacecraft close to each other) and the so-called ageing effect (the effect of the time evolution on in situ properties). We compile a database of 19 events from the past four decades measured by two spacecraft with a radial separation <0.2 au and an angular separation <10°. We find that the average magnetic field strength measured by the two spacecraft differs by 18% of the typical average value, which highlights non-negligible spatial or temporal variations. For one particular event, measurements taken by the two spacecraft allow us to quantify and significantly reduce the ageing effect to estimate the asymmetry of the magnetic field strength profile. This study reveals that single-spacecraft time series near 1 au can be strongly affected by ageing and that correcting for self-similar expansion does not capture the whole ageing effect.

Abstract:In‐situ measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission are used to estimate electron density from spacecraft potential and investigate compressive turbulence in the Earth's magnetosheath. During the MMS Solar Wind Turbulence Campaign in February 2019, the four MMS spacecraft were arranged in a logarithmic line constellation enabling the study of measurements from multiple spacecraft at varying distances. We estimate the electron density from spacecraft potential for a time interval in which the ion emitters actively control the potential. The derived electron density data product has a higher temporal resolution than the plasma instruments, enabling the examination of fluctuation for scales down to the sub‐ion range. The inter‐spacecraft separations range from 132 km to 916 km; this corresponds to scales of 3.5 to 24.1 ion inertial lengths. As an example, the derived density and magnetic field data are used to study fluctuations in the magnetosheath through time lags on a single spacecraft and spatial lags between pairs of spacecraft over almost one decade in scale. The results show an increase in anisotropy as the scale decreases, similar for the density and the magnetic field. This suggests different drivers in the strongly compressive magnetosheath and the weakly compressive solar wind. Two-dimensional correlation functions for density and magnetic field fluctuations in magnetosheath turbulence measured by the Cluster spacecraft

Abstract:Knowledge of multidimensional correlation functions is crucial for understanding the anisotropy of turbulence. The two-dimensional (2-D) spatial correlation functions (SCFs) obtained in previous studies of space plasma turbulence were restricted to large-length scales and covered a limited angular domain of the two-point separation vector with respect to the mean magnetic field. Here we aim to derive 2-D SCFs with smaller-length scale and nearly full angular distribution for the fluctuations of the number density and magnetic field in magnetosheath turbulence. We use the Cluster four-spacecraft measurements of the fluctuations with respect to a temporally and spatially varying background magnetic field to construct the 2-D SCFs. We find that the correlation function of the density fluctuations shows a pattern similar to that of the magnetic field fluctuations, both of which appear to be composed of two populations, whereby the major population extends along the coordinate parallel to mean magnetic field (S-parallel to) and the minor one deviates toward the perpendicular coordinate (S-perpendicular to). This pattern of 2-D SCFs implies that the energy of magnetosheath turbulence seems to cascade, in the inertial range close to the ion scale, mostly transverse to the background magnetic field and meanwhile partly along the field (i.e., k(perpendicular to) >> k(parallel to)).
Clustering of Global Magnetospheric Observations

Abstract:The use of supervised methods in space science have demonstrated powerful capability in classification tasks, but unsupervised methods have been less utilized for the clustering of spacecraft observations. We use a combination of unsupervised methods, being principal component analysis, self-organizing maps, and hierarchical agglomerative clustering, to make predictions on if THEMIS and MMS observations occurred in the magnetosphere, magnetosheath, or the solar wind. The resulting predictions are validated visually by analyzing the distribution of predictions and studying individual time series. Particular nodes in the self organizing map are studied to see what data they represent. The capability of deeper hierarchical analysis using this model is briefly explored. Finally, the changes in region prediction can be used to infer magnetopause and bow shock crossings, which can act as an additional method of validation, and are saved for their utility in solar wind validation, understanding magnetopause processes, and the potential to develop a bow shock model.

Abstract:The properties of plasmas (in space) are fundamentally governed by both ‘cross-scale’ coupling and comparative temporal behaviour operating over the micro-, meso-, and (MHD-) fluid regimes: for example, under conditions of turbulence, during magnetic reconnection and in shocks and other plasma boundaries. These themes map to a number of related and overlapping, phenomena, where known phenomena play different roles in each theme. Detailed understanding of fundamental plasma processes therefore requires analysis of both theoretical models (to distinguish the collisionless from the collisional regimes) and multi-scale measurements (suitable to address issues of stationarity). In particular, the investigation of phenomena requires analysis techniques which can distinguish and quantify temporal behaviour and the multi-scale spatial behaviour. The analysis of existing, multi-point data sets has led to a number of data co-ordination methods, such as the four spacecraft analysis tools developed for cluster, and we consider examples here. Advanced analysis concepts may be investigated with suitable considerations of measurement quality:adequate sampling of phenomena (for example, to extract the necessary information on the mechanisms operating) requires suitable spacecraft configurations and directly relates to the measurement quality achievable. A particular issue is how to resolve temporal behaviour across the spatial regimes, so that the data set is suitably coordinated. With the addition of theoretical modelling (in the context of particular phenomena) both the space and laboratory plasma regimes may be compared and we give an example of nonlinear wave coupling across spatial scales in this context.

Electromagnetic Dualities on Noncommutative Space-Time and Symplectic Formalisms

Abstract:In this thesis we analyze extensions of classical electromagnetic dualities to the noncommutative (NC) 3D and 4D space-times. It is known that the noncomutativity parameter theta becomes its Hodge dual *theta through the NC 4D electromagnetic duality [under the Slowly Varying Fields (SVF) limit], this is a nontrivial transformation which connects noncommutativity in space with noncommutativity between space and time. In this thesis we extend this duality to the 3D space-time, evaluate the necessity of the SVF limit in both 4D and 3D, study the 3D case with topological mass and establish a noncommutative extension to the selfdual model, clarifying certain conflicts found in the literature. We also present here the development of a technique of gauge embedding inspired in the symplectic handling of constraints which has already been applied to a number of models, both commutative and noncommutative, and success has been achieved in reproducing results obtained by other methods.

Abstract:We show for the first time, with direct, multispacecraft calculations of electric current density, and other methods, matched signatures of field-aligned currents (FACs) sampled simultaneously near the ionosphere at low (similar to 500km altitude) orbit and in the magnetosphere at medium (similar to 2.5 R-E altitude) orbits using a particular Swarm and Cluster conjunction. The Cluster signatures are interpreted and ordered through joint mapping of the ground/magnetospheric footprints and estimation of the auroral zone boundaries (taken as indication of the boundaries of Region 1 and Region 2 currents). We find clear evidence of both small-scale and large-scale FACs and clear matching of the behavior and structure of the large-scale currents at both Cluster and Swarm. The methodology is made possible through the joint operations of Cluster and Swarm, which contain, in the first several months of Swarm operations, a number of close three-spacecraft configurations.
On the Spatial Coherence of Magnetic Ejecta: Measurements of Coronal Mass Ejections by Multiple Spacecraft Longitudinally Separated by 0.01 AU

Abstract:Measurements of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) by multiple spacecraft at small radial separations but larger longitudinal separations is one of the ways to learn about the three-dimensional structure of CMEs. Here, we take advantage of the orbit of the Wind spacecraft that ventured to distances of up to 0.012 astronomical units (au) from the Sun-Earth line during the years 2000 to 2002. Combined with measurements from ACE, which is in a tight halo orbit around L1, the multipoint measurements allow us to investigate how the magnetic field inside magnetic ejecta (MEs) changes on scales of 0.005 - 0.012 au. We identify 21 CMEs measured by these two spacecraft for longitudinal separations of 0.007 au or more. We find that the time-shifted correlation between 30-minute averages of the non-radial magnetic field components measured at the two spacecraft is systematically above 0.97 when the separation is 0.008 au or less, but is on average 0.89 for greater separations. Overall, these newly analyzed measurements, combined with 14 additional ones when the spacecraft separation is smaller, point towards a scale length of longitudinal magnetic coherence inside MEs of 0.25 - 0.35 au for the magnitude of the magnetic field but 0.06 - 0.12 au for the magnetic field components. This finding raises questions about the very nature of MEs. It also highlights the need for additional "mesoscale" multi-point measurements of CMEs with longitudinal separations of 0.01 - 0.2 au.

Abstract:TianQin (TQ) mission, the sole proposed gravitational wave detection project in geocentric orbit at an altitude of approximately 105 km, traverses diverse geomagnetic regions. This paper employs a hybrid model to simulate the ambient magnetic field along the TQ orbit, investigating magnetically-induced acceleration noise under varying satellite-sun angles (SSA) and solar activity levels. The highest noise level, approximately 10−16ms−2Hz−1/2, occurs during transregional periods between the magnetosheath (MSH) and magnetotail (MTL). Noise within the MSH region is an order of magnitude lower than the former, with the MTL region exhibiting the lowest levels, although geomagnetic storms can equalize noise in both regions. Statistical analysis indicates that noise in the MTL region correlates with SSA and solar wind dynamic pressure, displaying a spectral characteristic of f−1.03±0.075, while the MSH region shows a Kolmogorov turbulence spectrum near the flank and f−0.5 at the subsolar region.

Abstract:Spacecraft potential has often been used to infer electron density with much higher time resolution than is typically possible with plasma instruments. However, recently two studies by Torkar et al. 2017 and Graham et al. 2018 have shown that external electric fields can also have an effect on the spacecraft potential by enhancing photoelectron escape from the surface. Consequently, should the electron density derived from the spacecraft potential be used during an event with a large electric field, the estimation would be contaminated and the user would see the effects of the electric field rather than density perturbations. The goal of this paper is to propose a method to remove the electric field effects to allow the density derived from spacecraft potential to be used even during large amplitude wave events such as Langmuir waves or upper hybrid waves.
