Abstract:A robust multiscale analysis of high-frequency magnetic field measurements from the Cluster spacecraft is presented using complimentary measurements from the magnetometer and search-coil instruments; in a stationary interval of fast ambient solar wind. We show a surprising and novel result: that for time-scales smaller than the ion-gyro period the magnetic field fluctuations exhibit non-Gaussian monoscaling i.e. are globally scale invariant and can be characterized by a single scaling exponent and thus a single universal scaling function for the probability density. This presents new questions, as well as theoretical constraints, for determining how magnetic turbulent energy is dissipated in collisionless plasmas.

Abstract:At electron scales, the power spectrum of solar-wind magnetic fluctuations can be highly variable and the dissipation mechanisms of the magnetic energy into the various particle species is under debate. In this paper, we investigate data from the Cluster mission’s STAFF Search Coil magnetometer when the level of turbulence is sufficiently high that the morphology of the power spectrum at electron scales can be investigated. The Cluster spacecraft sample a disturbed interval of plasma where two streams of solar wind interact. Meanwhile, several discontinuities (coherent structures) are seen in the large-scale magnetic field, while at small scales several intermittent bursts of wave activity (whistler waves) are present. Several different morphologies of the power spectrum can be identified: (1) two power laws separated by a break, (2) an exponential cutoff near the Taylor shifted electron scales, and (3) strong spectral knees at the Taylor shifted electron scales. These different morphologies are investigated by using wavelet coherence, showing that, in this interval, a clear break and strong spectral knees are features that are associated with sporadic quasi parallel propagating whistler waves, even for short times. On the other hand, when no signatures of whistler waves at are present, a clear break is difficult to find and the spectrum is often more characteristic of a power law with an exponential cutoff.

Abstract:Space plasma turbulence is inherently characterized by anisotropic fluctuations. The generalized k-th order correlation tensor of magnetic field increments allow us to separate the mixed isotropic and anisotropic structure functions from the purely anisotropic ones. In this work, we quantified the relative importance of anisotropic fluctuations in solar wind turbulence using two Alfvénic data samples gathered by the Solar Orbiter at 0.8 astronomical units. The results based on the joined statistics suggest that the anisotropic fluctuations are ubiquitous in solar wind turbulence and persist at kinetic scales. Using the RTN coordinate system, we show that their presence depends on the anisotropic sector under consideration, e.g., the RN and RT sectors exhibit enhanced anisotropy toward kinetic scales, in contrast with the TN. We then study magnetic field fluctuations parallel and perpendicular to the local mean magnetic field separately. We find that perpendicular fluctuations are representative of the global statistics, resembling the typical picture of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, whereas parallel fluctuations exhibit a scaling law with slope ∼1 for all the joined isotropic and anisotropic components. These results are in agreement with predictions based on the critical balance phenomenology. This topic is potentially of interest for future space missions measuring kinetic and MHD scales simultaneously in a multi-spacecraft configuration.

Abstract:We study the variation of average powers and spectral indices of electric field fluctuations with respect to the angle between average flow direction and the mean magnetic field in solar wind turbulence. Cluster spacecraft data from the years 2002 and 2007 are used for the present analysis. We perform a scale dependent study with respect to the local mean magnetic field using wavelet analysis technique. Prominent anisotropies are found for both the spectral index and power levels of the electric power spectra. Similar to the magnetic field fluctuations, the parallel (or antiparallel) electric fluctuation spectrum is found to be steeper than the perpendicular spectrum. However the parallel (or antiparallel) electric power is found to be greater than the perpendicular one. Below 0.1 Hz, the slope of the parallel electric power spectra deviates substantially from that of the total magnetic power spectra, supporting the existence of Alfvénic turbulence.

Abstract:Statistical properties of the interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations can provide an important insight into the solar wind turbulent cascade. Recently, analysis of the Probability Density Functions (PDF) of the velocity and magnetic field fluctuations has shown that these exhibit non-Gaussian properties on small time scales while large scale features appear to be uncorrelated. Here we apply the finite size scaling technique to explore the scaling of the magnetic field energy density fluctuations as seen by WIND. We find a single scaling sufficient to collapse the curves over the entire investigated range. The rescaled PDF follow a non Gaussian distribution with asymptotic behavior well described by the Gamma distribution arising from a finite range Levy walk. Such mono scaling suggests that a Fokker-Planck approach can be applied to study the PDF dynamics. These results strongly suggest the existence of a common, nonlinear process onthe time scale up to ~26 hours.

Abstract:The scaling of magnetic fluctuations provides crucial information for the understanding of solar wind turbulence. However, the observed magnetic fluctuations contain not only turbulence but also magnetic structures, leading to the violation of time stationarity. This violation would conceal the true scaling and influence the determination of the sampling angle with respect to the local background magnetic field. Here, to investigate scaling anisotropy, we utilize a simple but effective criterion phi < 10 degrees to ensure the time stationarity of the magnetic field, where phi is the angle between the two averaged magnetic fields after cutting the interval into two halves. We study the scaling anisotropy using higher-order statistics of structure functions under the condition of stationarity for near-Sun solar wind turbulence for the first time based on measurements obtained from the Parker Solar Probe at 0.17 au. We find that the scaling indices xi of the magnetic field show a linear dependence on the order p close to xi(p) = p/4. The multifractal scaling of the magnetic-trace structure functions becomes monoscaling close to xi(p) = p/3 with the local magnetic field perpendicular to the sampling direction and close to xi(p) = p/4 with the local magnetic field parallel to the sampling direction when measured with the stationary background magnetic field. The scaling of the velocity-trace structure functions has similar but less significant changes. The near-Sun solar wind turbulence displays different scaling anisotropies from the near-Earth solar wind turbulence, suggesting the evolution of the nonlinear interaction process during solar wind expansion.

Abstract:The turbulent solar wind magnetic field shows structures that are characterized by sudden, strong changes in the field magnitude and/or direction. Such structures can be intermittent if their increments found from time series spacecraft measurements deviate from a Gaussian distribution. Current sheets are a possible source of such intermittency in plasma turbulence. We try three different techniques to find such events from the magnetometer data of the Magnetosphere Multiscale Mission (MMS) – time derivative of the magnetic field, partial variance increment (PVI), and a modified Tsurutani-Smith (TS) method. We find a non-Gaussian distribution of magnetic field time derivatives after noise reduction. These intermittent events are identified with varying levels of noise reduction to obtain an optimum value of filtering frequency. These events are found to match with those obtained by setting a suitable threshold value for the PVI, which operates at larger time increments. The TS method which operates at even larger time increments also identifies some of these events. Identification of the same events in different MMS spacecraft confirms the presence of physical phenomena causing this intermittency. The magnetic field rotation angle across these events is also significantly larger than the average rotation angle for such intervals. Measurement of their duration indicates that these structures are of the order or even smaller than ion kinetic scales. Further high resolution observations and numerical simulations are required to probe their real spatial-temporal scales.

Derivation of generalized Kappa distribution from scaling properties of solar wind magnetic field fluctuations at kinetic scales

Abstract:Kinetic scale dynamics in weakly-collisional space plasmas usually exhibits a self-similar statistics of magnetic field fluctuations which implies the existence of an invariant probability density function (master curve). We provide an analytical derivation of the master curve by assuming that perpendicular fluctuations can be modeled through a scale-dependent Langevin equation. In our model, magnetic field fluctuations are the stochastic variable and their scale-to-scale evolution is assumed to be a Langevin process. We propose a formal derivation of the master curve describing the statistics of the fluctuations at kinetic scales. Model predictions are tested on independent data samples of fast solar wind measured near the Sun by Parker Solar Probe and near the Earth by Cluster. The master curve is a generalization of the Kappa distribution with two parameters: one regulating the tails and the other one controlling the asymmetry. Model predictions match the spacecraft observations up to 5$\sigma$ and even beyond in the case of perpendicular magnetic field fluctuations.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the analysis of fluctuations in the solar wind plasma and interplanetary magnetic field parameters observed by Solar Orbiter and WIND spacecraft at different scales ranging from ~103 to 107 km. We consider two long data intervals where the distances between the spacecraft are 0.1 and 0.5 AU, respectively, and they are located close to the Sun–Earth line. Transformation of the fluctuation’s properties on the way from the Sun to Earth is analyzed for different types of solar wind associated with quasi-stationary and transient solar phenomena. The time series of bulk speed are shown to undergo a slight modification, even for large spacecraft separation, while the time series of the interplanetary magnetic field magnitude and components as well as proton density may be transformed even at a relatively short distance. Though the large-scale solar wind structures propagate the distance up to 0.5 AU without significant change, local structures at smaller scales may be modified. The statistical properties of the fluctuations such as relative standard deviation or probability distribution function and its moments remain nearly unchanged at different distances between the two spacecraft and are likely to depend mostly on the type of the solar wind.

Abstract:Abstract The interplanetary magnetic field carried out from the Sun by the solar wind displays fluctuations over a wide range of scales. While at large scales, say at frequencies lower than 0.1–1 Hz, fluctuations display the universal character of fully developed turbulence with a well-defined Kolmogorov-like inertial range, the physical and dynamical properties of the small-scale regime as well as their connection with the large-scale ones are still a debated topic. In this work we investigate the near-Sun magnetic field fluctuations at subproton scales by analyzing the Markov property of fluctuations and recovering basic information about the nature of the energy transfer across different scales. By evaluating the Kramers–Moyal coefficients we find that fluctuations in the subproton range are well described as a Markovian process with Probability Density Functions (PDFs) modeled via a Fokker–Planck (FP) equation. Furthermore, we show that the shape of the PDFs is globally scale-invariant and similar to the one recovered for the stationary solution of the FP equation at different scales. The relevance of our results on the Markovian character of subproton scale fluctuations is also discussed in connection with the occurrence of turbulence in this domain.
Intermittency of Magnetic Discontinuities in the Near-Sun Solar Wind Turbulence

Abstract:The intermittency domain is in the magnetohydrodynamic inertial range but just above the dissipation range and contains the intermittent structures that influence the spectral index. However, the nature of these structures is still under debate and how they affect the higher-order scaling behavior in the near-Sun solar wind turbulence remains to be investigated. Here we use the magnetic field data measured by Parker Solar Probe in the near-Sun solar wind. We identify the intermittency by partial variance of increments method and conduct the multiorder structure functions analyses in the intermittency domain before and after removing the intermittency. We also perform for the first time the scaling analyses on the fluctuations of magnetic field direction given by the rotational angle ?=cos-1(B1 center dot B2)/ divide B1 divide divide B2 divide 1 and B (2) are the magnetic fields measured at two instants. We find that the multifractal scaling of the magnetic field could be predicted by the log-Poisson intermittency model with 2D sheetlike structures and a simple Kolmogorov -5/3 monoscaling recovers after the removal of the intermittency. We also find a similar behavior for the scalings of ?, suggesting that magnetic discontinuities are involved in the energy transfer process of solar wind turbulence.

Small Scale Energy Cascade of the Solar Wind Turbulence

Abstract:Magnetic fluctuations in the solar wind are distributed according to Kolmogorov's power law $f^{-5/3}$ below the ion cyclotron frequency $f_{ci}$. Above this frequency, the observed steeper power law is usually interpreted in two different ways: a dissipative range of the solar wind turbulence or another turbulent cascade, the nature of which is still an open question. Using the Cluster magnetic data we show that after the spectral break the intermittency increases toward higher frequencies, indicating the presence of non-linear interactions inherent to a new inertial range and not to the dissipative range. At the same time the level of compressible fluctuations raises. We show that the energy transfer rate and intermittency are sensitive to the level of compressibility of the magnetic fluctuations within the small scale inertial range. We conjecture that the time needed to establish this inertial range is shorter than the eddy-turnover time, and is related to dispersive effects. A simple phenomenological model, based on the compressible Hall MHD, predicts the magnetic spectrum $\sim k^{-7/3+2\alpha}$, which depends on the degree of plasma compression $\alpha$.

Intermittency in the Expanding Solar Wind: Observations from Parker Solar Probe (0.16au), Helios 1 (0.3-1au), and Voyager 1 (1-10au)

Abstract:We examine statistics of magnetic field vector components to explore how intermittency evolves from near sun plasma to radial distances as large as 10 au. Statistics entering the analysis include auto-correlation, magnetic structure functions of order n (SFn), and scale dependent kurtosis (SDK), each grouped in ranges of heliocentric distance. The Goddard Space Flight Center Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF) provides magnetic field measurements for resolutions of 6.8ms for Parker Solar Probe, 6s for Helios, and 1.92s for Voyager 1. We compute SF2 to determine the scales encompassing the inertial range and examine SDK to investigate degree of non-Gaussianity. Auto-correlations are used to resolve correlation scales. Correlation lengths and ion inertial lengths provide an estimate of effective Reynolds number (Re). Variation in Re allows us to examine for the first time the relationship between SDK and Re in an interplanetary plasma. A conclusion from this observed relationship is that regions with lower Re at a fixed physical scale have on average lower kurtosis, implying less intermittent behavior. Kolmogorov refined similarity hypothesis is applied to magnetic SFn and kurtosis to calculate intermittency parameters and fractal scaling in the inertial range. A refined Voyager 1 magnetic field dataset is generated.

MULTI-SCALE ANTI-CORRELATION BETWEEN ELECTRON DENSITY AND MAGNETIC FIELD STRENGTH IN THE SOLAR WIND

Abstract:This work focuses on the relation between the electron density and the magnetic field strength in the solar wind, and aims to reveal its compressive nature and to determine the level of compressibility. For this purpose, we choose a period of quiet solar wind data obtained at 1 AU by the Cluster C1 satellite. The electron density is derived with a sampling time as high as 0.2 s from the spacecraft-potential measurements made by the Electric Field and Waves instrument. We use the wavelet cross-coherence method to analyze the correlation between the electron density and the magnetic field strength on various scales. We find a dominant anti-correlation between them at different timescales ranging from 1000 s down to 10 s, a result which has never been reported before. This may indicate the existence of pressure-balanced structures (PBSs) with different sizes in the solar wind. The small ( mini) PBSs appear to be embedded in the large PBSs, without affecting the pressure balance between the large structures. Thus, a nesting of these possible multi-scale PBSs is found. Moreover, we find for the first time that the relative fluctuation spectra of both the electron number density and the magnetic field strength look almost the same in the range from 0.01 Hz to 2.5Hz, implying a similar cascading for these two types of fluctuations. Probable formation mechanisms for the multi-scale possible PBSs are discussed. The results of our work are believed to be helpful for understanding the compressive nature of solar wind turbulence as well as the connections between the solar wind streams and their coronal sources.

Abstract:Plasma turbulence involves complex, nonlinear interactions of electromagnetic fields and charged particles across multiple scales. Studying these phenomena in space plasmas, like the solar wind, is facilitated by the intrinsic scale separations and the availability of in situ spacecraft observations. However, the single-point or single-scale configurations of current spacecraft limit our understanding of many properties of the turbulent solar wind. To overcome these limitations, multipoint measurements spanning a range of characteristic scales are essential. This Letter prepares for the enhanced measurement capabilities of upcoming multispacecraft missions by demonstrating that higher-order statistics, specifically kurtosis, as a baseline for intermittency can be accurately measured. Using synthetic turbulent fields with adjustable intermittency levels, we achieve scale separations analogous to those in the solar wind and apply these techniques to the planned trajectories of the HelioSwarm mission. This approach promises significant advancements in our understanding of plasma turbulence.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper gives a review of some recent work on intermittency, non-Gaussian statistics, and fractal scaling of solar wind magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. Model calculations and theories are discussed and put in their context with the in-situ observations of the solar wind fluctuations, essentially of the flow velocity and magnetic field. Emphasis is placed more on a comparison of the data with the theory than on a complete derivation of the model results, which are treated in a more tutorial fashion. The introduction reminds of some important observations and key aspects of the solar wind turbulence. Then structure functions are defined and observational results discussed. The probability density functions provide a direct means to analyse the statistical properties of the fluctuations. Evidence for non-Gaussian statistics is provided. Intermittency and simple scaling models are discussed, which yield algebraic expressions for the scaling exponents of the structure functions. The concept of the extended self-similarity is presented and corresponding observational evidence for its existence in the solar wind is provided. Subsequently, and extended structure function model, including the p-model scaling and a scale-dependent cascade, is discussed and compared with selected measurements. The basics of the multifractals are presented and applied to solar wind data. The multifractal scaling of the kinetic energy flux as proxy for the unknown cascading rate is established observationally, and the so-called multifractal spectrum is obtained. Finally, the scaling exponents of the associated correlation functions are derived and analysed. The paper concludes with a discussion of the empirical results and prospects for the future research in this field and in solar wind MHD turbulence in general.
Testing for Markovian character of transfer of fluctuations in solar wind turbulence on kinetic scales

Abstract:We apply statistical analysis to search for processes responsible for turbulence in physical systems. In our previous studies, we have shown that solar wind turbulence in the inertial range of large magnetohydrodynamic scales exhibits Markov properties. We have recently extended this approach on much smaller kinetic scales. Here we are testing for the Markovian character of stochastic processes in a kinetic regime based on magnetic field and velocity fluctuations in the solar wind, measured onboard the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission: behind the bow shock, inside the magnetosheath, and near the magnetopause. We have verified that the Chapman-Kolmogorov necessary conditions for Markov processes is satisfied for local transfer of energy between the magnetic and velocity fields also on kinetic scales. We have confirmed that for magnetic fluctuations, the first Kramers-Moyal coefficient is linear, while the second term is quadratic, corresponding to drift and diffusion processes in the resulting Fokker-Planck equation. It means that magnetic self-similar turbulence is described by generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. We show that for the magnetic case, the Fokker-Planck equation leads to the probability density functions of the kappa distributions, which exhibit global universal scale invariance with a linear scaling and lack of intermittency. On the contrary, for velocity fluctuations, higher order Kramers-Moyal coefficients should be taken into account and hence scale invariance is not observed. However, the nonextensity parameter in Tsallis entropy provides a robust measure of the departure of the system from equilibrium. The obtained results are important for a better understanding of the physical mechanism governing turbulent systems in space and laboratory.
