Abstract:Magnetic field disturbances with a clear bipolar signature are frequently observed when the Cluster spacecraft fleet passes through both southern and northern high-latitude energetic electron boundaries at the nightside magnetosphere. The dominant variation of the bipolar signature is in the azimuthal direction of the local mean field-aligned coordinate, indicating a field-aligned current. From 2001 to 2008, we have examined 110 events with the magnetic field and energetic electron measurements. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) The density and thickness of the field-aligned current, calculated under the assumption of the one-dimensional sheet, are in order of tens of nA/m(2) and hundreds of kilometers, respectively. (2) Currents flowing into and away from the ionosphere tend to be observed in the postmidnight and premidnight sector, respectively, which have the same polarity as the region 1 current system. (3) These currents mainly distribute in the 60 degrees-75 degrees magnetic latitude region after mapping to the ionosphere. We also find that the current density and corresponding magnetic field variation are positively correlated with the Kp index and solar wind pressure, but almost independent of the AE index.

Abstract:The authors present an original research manuscript which aims to explain observations performed in the northern nightside magnetosphere, where northward and southward currents are detected along with oscillations in the field curvature. In this region, the dominant currents are field-aligned currents and the ring current, which should exist mostly in the X-Y-plane. The authors propose that these currents are due to curvature drifts of energetic particles. The authors base their analysis on two mid-latitude storm time vents and Cluster spacecraft data, and various analysis techniques using multiple instruments from the Cluster mission.

Abstract:Double Star/TC‐1 and Cluster data show that both component reconnection and anti‐parallel reconnection occur at the magnetopause when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is predominantly dawnward. The occurrence of these different features under these very similar IMF conditions are further confirmed by a statistical study of 290 fast flows measured in both the low and high latitude magnetopause boundary layers. The directions of these fast flows suggest a possible S‐shaped configuration of the reconnection X‐line under such a dawnward dominated IMF orientation.

Abstract:The distribution properties of the magnetic field in magnetotail current sheets have been explored statistically with the magnetic measurement data of the Cluster mission from June to November of the years 2001–2005. It is found that, on average, the strength of the magnetic field and its B z component in the current sheet are weaker in the region close to midnight but stronger near the dawnside and duskside flanks, which implies that, in general, a thinner current sheet occurs near midnight and thicker ones near both flanks. The occurrence of tail current sheet flapping is higher on both flanks than in the midnight region, although it is most frequent in the dawn flank. Current sheets with a negative B z component or a strong B y component have a higher probability of occurring at magnetic local times of 21:00–01:00, indicating that magnetic activity, e.g. magnetic reconnection and current disruption occur more frequently there. Statistically, the probability distributions of the B y component and the tilt angle of magnetic field lines in the current sheet are approximately normal distributions, and the occurrence probability of the flattened current sheet is about one third that of the normal current sheet. The magnetic field and B z component in the current sheet mainly vary from 1 nT to 10 nT. The B y component in the tail central current sheet is on average twice the IMF B y at 1 AU.

Abstract:An understanding of the transport of solar wind plasma into and throughout the terrestrial magnetosphere is crucial to space science and space weather. For non-active periods, there is little agreement on where and how plasma entry into the magnetosphere might occur. Moreover, behaviour in the high-latitude region behind the magnetospheric cusps, for example, the lobes, is poorly understood, partly because of lack of coverage by previous space missions. Here, using Cluster multi-spacecraft data, we report an unexpected discovery of regions of solar wind entry into the Earth’s high-latitude magnetosphere tailward of the cusps. From statistical observational facts and simulation analysis we suggest that these regions are most likely produced by magnetic reconnection at the high-latitude magnetopause, although other processes, such as impulsive penetration, may not be ruled out entirely. We find that the degree of entry can be significant for solar wind transport into the magnetosphere during such quiet times.

Abstract:On the basis of the multipoint magnetic observations of Cluster in the region 15-19 R-E downtail, the magnetic field structure in magnetotail current sheet (CS) center is statistically surveyed. It is found that the B-y component (in GSM coordinates) is distributed mainly within vertical bar B-y vertical bar < 5nT, while the B-z component is mostly positive and distributes mainly within 1 similar to 10 nT. The plane of the magnetic field lines (MFLs) is mostly vertical to the equatorial plane, with the radius of curvature (Rc) of the MFLs being directed earthward and the binormal (perpendicular to the curvature and magnetic field direction) being directed azimuthally westward. The curvature radius of MFLs reaches a minimum, R-c,R-min, at the CS center and is larger than the corresponding local half thickness of the neutral sheet, h. Statistically, it is found that the overall surface of the CS, with the normal pointing basically along the south-north direction, can be approximated to be a plane parallel to equatorial plane, although the local CS may be flapping and is frequently tilted to the equatorial plane. The tilted CS (normal inclined to the equatorial plane) is apt to be observed near both flanks and is mainly associated with the slippage of magnetic flux tubes. It is statistically verified that the minimum curvature radius, R-c,R-min, half thickness of neutral sheet, h, and the slipping angle of MFLs, delta, in the CS satisfies h = R-c,R-min cos delta. The current density, with a mean strength of 4-8 nA/m(2), basically flows azimuthally and tangentially to the surface of the CS, from dawn side to the dusk side. There is an obvious dawn-dusk asymmetry of CS, however. For magnetic local times (MLT) similar to 21:00-similar to 01:00, the CS is relatively thinner; the minimum curvature radius of MFLs, R-c,R-min (0.6-1 R-E) and the half-thickness of neutral sheet, h (0.2-0.4 R-E), are relatively smaller, and B-z (3-5 nT) and the minimum magnetic field, B-min (5-7 nT), are weaker. It is also found that negative B-z has a higher probability of occurrence and the cross-tail current density j(Y) is dominant (2-4 nA/m(2)) in comparison to those values near both flanks. This implies that magnetic activity, e. g., magnetic reconnection and current disruption, could be triggered more frequently in CS with similar to 21:00-similar to 01:00 MLT. Accordingly, if mapped to the region in the auroral ionosphere, it is expected that substorm onset would be optically observed with higher probability for similar to 21:00-similar to 01:00 MLT, which is well in agreement with statistical observations of auroral substorm onset.
Analyses on the geometrical structure of magnetic field in the current sheet based on cluster measurements

Abstract:[1] The geometrical structure of the magnetic field is a critical character in the magnetospheric dynamics. Using the magnetic field data measured by the Cluster constellation satellites, the geometrical structure including the curvature radius, directions of curvature, and normal of the osculating planes of the magnetic field lines within the current sheet/neutral sheet have been investigated. The results are ( 1) Inside of the tail neutral sheet (NS), the curvature of magnetic field lines points towards Earth, the normal of the osculating plane points duskward, and the characteristic half width ( or the minimum curvature radius) of the neutral sheet is generally less than 2 R-E, for many cases less than 1600 km. (2) Outside of the neutral sheet, the curvature of magnetic field lines pointed northward ( southward) at the north ( south) side of NS, the normal of the osculating plane points dawnward, and the curvature radius is about 5 R-E similar to 10 R-E. (3) Thin NS, where the magnetic field lines have the minimum of the curvature radius less than 0.25 R-E, may appear at all the local time between LT 20 hours and 4 hours, but thin NS occurs more frequently near to midnight than that at the dawnside and duskside. (4) The size of the NS is dependent on substorm phases. Generally, the NS is thin during the growth and expansion phases and grows thick during the recovery phase. (5) For the one-dimensional NS, the half thickness and flapping velocity of the NS could be quantitatively determined. Therefore the differential geometry analyses based on Cluster 4-point magnetic measurements open a window for visioning the three-dimensional static and dynamic magnetic field structure of geomagnetosphere.

Abstract:In this paper, using Cluster multi-spacecrafts observation data during January to April of each year from 2001 to 2006, we have studied the solar wind penetration events into the Earth's high-latitude magnetosphere. When the IMF is northward, although the formation of the entry layers depends on the direction of IMF, we pointed out that it mainly depends on the IMF Bx component and the influences of IMF By component could be weak.

Recent Cluster Results on Cusp and Magnetopause Boundary Phenomena

Abstract:The combined data sets of Cluster and Double Star have provided extensive, multi-scale coverage of the Earth's magnetosphere. Since 2001 the Cluster orbit has preferentially sampled the high and mid altitude cusp regions during the spring seasons, and crossed both the high and low latitude, dayside magnetopause at other times. We present an overview of the most recent Cluster research on both the dayside and boundary layer phenomena based predominantly on multipoint studies. The Doublestar TC-1 spacecraft has also sampled either the subsolar region of the magnetopause, or southerly latitudes, at similar local times to cluster. We therefore also review coordinated CLUSTER-Double Star conjunctions for a number of dayside passes to investigate reconnection associated signatures observed at different locations. We Focus on both transient FTEs, arising from opened flux ropes during intermittant reconnection, and comparative boundary layer signatures during cusp and magnetopause transitions and investigate structure and dynamics of the magnetopause and FTE occurance on motion. Cluster provides good coordination with ionospheric instrumentation, particularly the EISCAT and SuperDARN radars and ground magnetomters and we also review investigations of the ground signatures of reconnection (FTEs and boundary layers) and other features of magnetospheric response. The spacecraft are conjugate simulataneously with both the ESR radar on Svalbard, and the Antarctic station at Zhongshan, when the ground stations lie under the cusp position, Cluster is passing out from the northern cusp and TC-1 is near the magnetopause.

Local Time and Interplanetary Magnetic Field by Dependence of Field‐aligned Currents at High Altitudes

Abstract:Magnetic field measurements from the Polar spacecraft reveal a field‐aligned current system in the high‐latitude, high‐altitude magnetosphere that is the extension of the traditional region 1 and region 2 field‐aligned current system observed at low altitudes. On average both the low‐ and high‐altitude observations show that the region 1 and region 2 currents flow in opposite senses on the morning and afternoon sides. Recent studies reveal that negative (dusk to dawn) interplanetary magnetic field By extends the upward flowing region 1 current onto the morningside and positive By extends the downward flowing region 1 onto the afternoonside in the northern hemisphere. We use Polar magnetic field data to study both the local time and interplanetary‐By orderings of the high‐latitude, high‐altitude, field‐aligned currents. We find that the interplanetary‐By component plays a very important role in controlling the flow sense of the field‐aligned current at high altitudes. Except for small clock angles, the effect of the negative (positive) interplanetary By is an upward (downward) current both in the afternoon and morning sectors.
Geometry of the high-latitude magnetopause as observed by Cluster

Abstract:This investigation reveals the geometrical properties of the high-latitude boundaries surrounding the high-altitude cusp. These have been shown by recent studies to include the outer boundary between the magnetosheath and the cusp; the outer boundary between the magnetosheath and the high-latitude, closed field-line region of the dayside magnetosphere ( which we call the high-latitude trapping region ( HLTR)); and the inner boundaries on the equatorward and tailward edges of the high-altitude cusp region. We present a survey of the normal directions of the outer boundaries: between the magnetosheath and cusp in comparison to between the magnetosheath and the HLTR. This study is based on the magnetic field data set obtained by the Cluster quartet for a period during which the orbits passed through either the dayside cusp or the magnetopause on consecutive orbits. These initial results show some evidence of the control of cusp geometry by the IMF orientation and clear trends which are consistent with an indentation or at least a nonplanar geometry in the cusp-magnetosheath boundary for those cases which are clearly identified. The detailed geometry of all surrounding cusp boundaries, deduced from selected crossings in the data set, case by case, is also shown to support these findings and to address the issue of the identification of relative spacecraft location with respect to this highly dynamic region.

Abstract:The cold-dense plasma sheet (CDPS) plays an important role in the entry process of the solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere. Investigating the seasonal variation of CDPS occurrences will help us better understand the long-term variation of plasma exchange between the solar wind and magnetosphere, but any seasonal variation of CDPS occurrences has not yet been reported in the literature. In this paper, we investigate the seasonal variation of the occurrence rate of CDPS using Geotail data from 1996 to 2015 and find a semiannual variation of the CDPS occurrences. Given the higher probability of solar wind entry under stronger northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions, 20 years of IMF data (1996-2015) are used to investigate the seasonal variation of IMF B-z under northward IMF conditions. We find a semiannual variation of IMF B-z, which is consistent with the Russell-McPherron (R-M) effect. We therefore suggest that the semiannual variation of CDPS may be related to the R-M effect.
Solar Wind Transport into Magnetosphere Caused by Magnetic Reconnection at High Latitude Magnetopause During Northward IMF: Cluster-DSP Conjunction Observations

Abstract:An event of Cluster-Double Star conjunction observations of magnetic reconnection at high latitude magnetopause nightside of both cusps and solar wind transport into magnetosphere caused by such reconnection process has been investigated. During northward IMF, Cluster/SC1 observed accelerated flows and ion heating associated with magnetic reconnection at high latitude magnetopause nightside of southern cusp. And Double Star observed cold dense solar wind plasma transported into dayside magnetosphere. The analysis on such conjunction observations shows that: (1) during northward IMF, magnetic reconnection occurs at high latitude nightside of southern cusp, accompanied by accelerated flows that are observed by Cluster/SC1; (2) the direction of the accelerated flows, with its sunward component V x , dawnward component V y , northward component V z , is quite consistent with the theoretical anticipation under the condition of northward IMF with dawnward component B y ; (3) reconnection can heat plasma more in parallel direction than in perpendicular direction, to a level of about 4 keV; (4) with reconnection taking place at high latitude magnetopause nightside of the southern cusp, TC-1 observed cold and dense plasma transported into magnetosphere; (5) by reconnection at high latitude magnetopause nightside of both cusps, solar wind flux tube can be captured by magnetosphere and pulled into dayside magnetosphere. This event presents further observational evidence for magnetic reconnection at high latitude magnetopause nightside of both cusps as an important mechanism of solar wind transport into magnetosphere.
The Magnetic Local Time Distribution of Storm Geomagnetic Field Disturbance under Different Conditions of Solar Wind and Interplanetary Magnetic Field

Abstract:The magnetic local time (MLT) distributions of the horizontal geomagnetic disturbance (Delta H) are investigated with the SuperMAG data set during 330 magnetic storms from 2000 to 2015. Then the MLT distributions of Delta H are verified and interpreted with the SuperMAG-based partial ring current indices (SMR indices) and the Burton equation. It is shown that the Delta H is positive at most MLTs and slightly stronger on the dayside during the initial phase. Such distribution might be mainly attributed to the global positive impact of the magnetopause currents, while the ring current (RC) only produces weak negative disturbances, which are slightly stronger on the duskside. In the main phase, the Delta H decreases prominently with the peak on the duskside. The RC particles injection plays a major role, especially for large solar wind electric field (E-SW) The region with Delta H larger than -20 nT is concentrated on the dawnside for small E-SW, which might be attributed to earthward bursty bulk flows. Besides, larger solar wind dynamic pressure might cause stronger disturbances under the same magnitude of E-SW. In the recovery phase, the Delta H is weaker and more uniform distributed than in the main phase for negative E-SW. For positive E-SW, similar dawn-dusk asymmetry occurs as that in the main phase, but the peak of strongest disturbance tends to weaken and move toward the dayside. Based on the dawn-dusk asymmetric decay rate derived from the Burton equation, it is speculated that the contribution of partial RC might be no less than the FACs.
Use of twenty years CLUSTER/FGM data to observe the mean behavior of the magnetic field and current density of Earth's magnetosphere

Abstract:The data from the CLUSTER FGM magnetometer, recorded for 20 years at ESA's Cluster Science Archive, as well as the position of the spacecraft, have been used to form a database aligned in time. It allows the calculation of curl(B) over all the lifetime of the mission (representing the current density via . The and data are then bin averaged, as a function of the dipole tilt angle, to form a 3D grid of spatial extent of about 20 RE , and for any spatial resolution. From these data grids, maps of the direction of the magnetic field and of the current density can be produced, allowing the observation of the average behaviour of the magnetic field and the current density on a large scale. The validity of the calculation of is discussed. By means of spatial interpolation, the grids are used to provide a measurement of the magnetic field at any point in space where the grid is filled. This allows the possibility of ray tracing to obtain empirical plots of the magnetic field lines, i.e. modelled from experimental data. Field lines near the cusp can be visualized, although smoothed by the averaging of the IMF and solar wind parameters. In future work it would be possible to add other classification criteria than just the dipole tilt angle, such as various activity indices and solar wind parameters. The prospect of adding data from other missions (such as MMS?) would extend the regions that have been covered by Cluster, and increase the spatial extent of the 3D grid and its resolution.
