Abstract:This article addresses some critical aspects of the relationship between aesthetic medicine (AM) and ethics and proposes a possible deontological ethical line to pursue based on current practices. The role of AM has always been controversial and suffers from unclear practical and moral boundaries, even within academic settings, since it aims to improve the appearance of individuals, not to cure a disease. Today, it is essential and pertinent to discuss these issues, as AM specialists are dealing with a growing and increasingly demanding patient population that has undergone profound evolution in recent years. Current challenges within the field of AM include a lack of global uniformity concerning the education of AM specialists, an increasing number of physicians practicing AM with diverse training backgrounds, the spread of AM being practiced outside of medical practice or hospital settings, and the influence of social media where the success is modelled and dictated by the identification of a youthful appearance). By the field of action enriched by technologies that aim not only at enhancement per se but also at the preservation and regeneration of tissues, it is necessary to establish an active multidisciplinary discussion on the definition of shared ethical limits. This discussion would allow AM to fully reclaim its identity as a specialty that aims to improve patient well-being whilst maintaining respect for patient aesthetic harmony, the expertise of specialists who practice AM, the essential role of safety, and awareness of the importance of a confidential doctor−patient relationship.

Abstract:Background: The landscape of modern aesthetic medicine has witnessed a paradigm shift from traditional doctor-led care to a consumer-driven model, presenting a plethora of ethical challenges. This review discusses the ethical dimensions of medical aesthetics, exploring the implications of consumer demand, societal influences, and technological advancements on patient care and well-being. Methods: Drawing upon a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, this review synthesizes evidence regarding the rise of aesthetic medicine, ethical challenges encountered in practice, and the implications of social media and marketing in shaping patient perceptions and decision-making. Results: Aesthetic medicine confronts unique ethical challenges stemming from its elective nature and the pervasive influence of societal beauty standards. Concerns include the commodification of beauty, conflicts of interest, limited evidence-base of treatments, and the rise of nonphysician providers. Moreover, the evolving role of social media influencers and medical marketing raises ethical dilemmas regarding transparency, patient autonomy, and professional integrity. Conclusions: The ethical landscape of aesthetic medicine necessitates a proactive approach to address emerging challenges and safeguard patient well-being. Guided by principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice, recommendations are proposed to enhance informed consent practices, mitigate appearance anxiety, facilitate shared decision-making, and promote responsible use of social media. Professional societies are urged to establish clear ethical guidelines and standards to uphold professionalism and patient trust in the field of aesthetic medicine.

Abstract:With increased demands for medical aesthetics procedures and the sudden profusion of newly licensed, and unlicensed, providers who are performing these medical aesthetics procedures also comes the responsibility to shift to collective competence. Collective competence refers to what occurs among professionals in action, emphasizing the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and perceptions among those who are providing services to the medical aesthetics client. Registered nurses and medical students are not taught to perform cosmetic procedures in basic nursing or medical programs and thus require a post-entry-level education to validate their competency. The current medical aesthetics apprenticeship training approach of see one, do one, and teach one focuses on teaching technical skills and thus does not sufficiently address the ever-changing health care context and the ambiguity in practitioner role. Recent scholars highlight that when health care failed or an error has been identified, it is rarely adduced to an individual's competence but rather is more likely to be a failure of the collective team. In this article, we are advocating for a change in how medical aesthetics practitioners are trained. In particular, it advocates creating opportunities within the curricula to train practitioners as a collective body, as opposed to providing training that focuses on the individual's competence and technical skills alone.

Abstract:Abstract The aesthetic injectables and nonsurgical facial aesthetics industry, marked by its rapid growth, faces critical challenges concerning regulatory standards and ethical conduct. This manuscript contributes to the discourse on these issues through perspectives from professionals across disciplines captured in a survey. This study explores the multifaceted concerns related to the lack of stringent regulations and their impact on patient safety, practitioner credibility, and field integrity, and therefore aims to foster informed discussions, encourage responsible practices, and advocate for a robust framework ensuring the wellbeing of both practitioners and patients. Consensus surveys were distributed at a conference in 2023 attended by registered healthcare professionals (RHPs); students, including medical, dental and nursing students; and other allied healthcare professionals working in the aesthetics industry. The surveys were designed using Google Forms and featured multiple-choice questions assessing regulatory standards and professional ethics in nonsurgical facial aesthetics. Responses were anonymized, aggregated and analysed using Microsoft Excel. Consent was obtained from participants and no patients were involved. This study involved 82 participants encompassing various roles within the healthcare industry. Of all the participants, 67% were employed, of whom 67% were working within the NHS. A high percentage (99%) of respondents agreed on the need for a minimum educational standard for RHPs practising injectable aesthetics. Opinions were divided on healthcare practitioners overseeing and prescribing for nonhealthcare practitioners in aesthetics, with 68% of participants disagreeing and 30% agreeing. There was strong support (88%) for specialist training in cosmetic injectables to involve a faculty of trainers with expertise across different areas, and almost all respondents (96%) believed that those teaching cosmetic injectables should possess high-level certified expertise. In the realm of social media, a significant majority (90%) deemed it acceptable for RHPs to use these platforms for advertising. A substantial majority (90%) agreed that it is acceptable for RHPs to use social media to advertise their nonsurgical facial aesthetics qualifications, private practice or skills. In conclusion, there is a clear consensus on the importance of setting minimum educational standards for healthcare professionals in injectable aesthetics. The majority of respondents believe in stringent regulations for those overseeing and assisting nonhealthcare practitioners in aesthetics. Interestingly, social media is seen as an acceptable platform for healthcare practitioners to showcase their qualifications and skills in nonsurgical facial aesthetics. Strong support exists for the protection of professional titles, emphasizing the importance of qualifications and training in the field of cosmetic and aesthetic medicine.

Several medical conditions are now being treated with products, procedures or equipment that are conventionally used for aesthetic indications. This has widened the scope of treatment modalities available for dermatologists to treat various indications that fall outside the purview of aesthetic dermatology. The authors present aesthetic treatment modalities and procedures which can be used for medical aesthetics, their present-day status and usefulness in field of therapeutics with a review of published literature from "Medline" (via "PubMed"), "Cochrane," the Virtual Health Library, and Google Scholar.

Abstract:Background Aesthetics medicine, a controversial branch of clinical medicine known for its high degree of commercialization, faces numerous conflicts, particularly in some developing countries. The global aesthetics medicine industry requires enhancements of its legal and supervision framework and risk management systems. Aims This paper aimed to provide a comprehensive visual analysis of academic achievements related to regulatory and legal issues in the field of aesthetic medicine and to identify its development trends and research hotspots. Methods The Web of Science Core Collection was employed to retrieve relevant studies, resulting in a total of 602 research articles after selection. Utilizing bibliometric methods and CiteSpace, this study analyzed the primary countries, institutions, authors, journals, hotspots, frontiers, and trends in this domain. Results The findings indicated rapid increases in the number of published papers. The United States emerged as the leading contributor with 131 research papers and the highest intermediate centrality. Eleven keyword clusters were identified, with "adolescence" and "office‐based surgery" being the most recent topics. We also analyzed the trends and frontiers of legal research in medical aesthetics. Conclusion The importance of informed consent has been increasingly emphasized, and research in the field of medical aesthetics has been gradually expanding beyond individual cosmetic procedures. The management system has become more comprehensive, moreover, guidelines and medical laws have been continually published, with research shifting toward a holistic perspective that encompasses patients, medical aesthetic providers, and regulatory authorities in the study of medical aesthetics regulation and legislation. This paper also proposes some innovative directions for future research and applications.

Abstract:Objective: This review article summarises the latest evidence for commonly undertaken procedures in aesthetic breast surgery with a focus on key principles of breast augmentation, reduction, and mastopexy. The paper also outlines various approaches and controversies as well as complications such as breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) and breast implant illness (BII) which are increasingly being recognised and becoming a challenge to manage. Background: Changing trends of aesthetic breast surgery over the decades has warranted a continuous evolution of this field. The ability to deliver safe and appropriate care is dependent upon sound reconstructive principles and proper training. The lack of uniformity in either is a cause of concern. The impact of social media and changing perception of body image can also no longer be overlooked in the field of aesthetics and reconstruction. Methods: Review of literature including recent journals, textbook chapters, online databases like PubMed, and current government and surgical society guidelines. Conclusions: Breast reconstruction is based on sound surgical principles and it is imperative to follow these for the practice of this speciality. There are two important issues that revolve around this aspect of surgery. First relates to the urgent need to invest time and effort in improving regulations and outcomes in the cosmetic surgery industry. Second, it is crucial to promote and prioritize the development and training in this field as the principles of aesthetic breast surgery underpins oncoplastic breast surgery for management of cancer.

Abstract:Background: Aesthetic medicine has traditionally focused on addressing perceived problem areas, with lack of long-term planning and engagement. Objectives: This article describes a patient-centric model for nonsurgical aesthetic medical practice, termed the 360° approach to facial aesthetic rejuvenation. Methods: The 360° approach was divided into 4 foundational pillars. Medical literature, the authors' clinical experiences, and results from patient satisfaction surveys were used to support the approach. Results: Pillar 1 describes the development of a complete understanding of the patient, based on the use of active listening principles, to characterize the patient's current aesthetic concerns, lifestyle, medical and treatment history, treatment goals, attitude toward aesthetic treatment, and financial resources. Pillar 2 involves conducting a comprehensive facial assessment in contrast to a feature-specific assessment, considering multiple facial tissues and structures and their interrelationships, thus helping to prevent the unanticipated consequences of narrowly focused treatment. Pillar 3 describes leveraging all available treatments and techniques in the development of an initial treatment plan arising from the facial assessment. Pillar 4 adds a time dimension to treatment planning, working toward the goal of a long-term modifiable treatment timeline, with full patient support and involvement; this is designed to facilitate a durable, sustained relationship between the patient and aesthetic healthcare professional (HCP). Conclusions: Although implementation involves substantial commitment and time, the patient-oriented focus of the 360° approach can help achieve optimal patient outcomes and the development of enduring patient-HCP relationships.

The reason for this periodic reappearance of this topic is because of the amazing aspect of current human experience that is continually benefited from ongoing advances in science and medicine. These advances have not only resulted in the elimination of many illnesses and maladies but have also prolonged the active human lifespan. Peoples' health is considerably better than it was just a few decades ago. These advances continue and among such are frank endeavors to further longevity. As a result of this, as evidenced by the patients entering our practices, there is an enlarging and more sophisticated group of patients seeking physical and physiological rejuvenation. Their desire for rejuvenation of one's facial appearance is indeed part of the evolution of patients' desire for good health, youthfulness, longevity, and vitality. The field of facial rejuvenation has undergone parallel advances, like other aspect of medicine, with changes in surgical techniques and new technologies. Patients' growing desire for rejuvenation has been catalyzed by the internet and social media. Patients are continually presented with not only what is possible, but what is possible for them personally. The intermittent recurrence of the topic of facial rejuvenation in Facial Plastic Surgery , therefore, is not only understandable but necessary. As pertinent advances and practices change, it is essential that these changes are communicated to the clinicians who are involved in facial rejuvenation. That is what we present here in the Facial Rejuvenation: Comprehensive 2025 Experts' Update. Abstract:Since the 1980s, Chinese scholars have been trying to expound and synthetise elementary aesthetical ideas which occur in medicine, in order to treat this area of study as a defined branch of medicine--'medical aesthetics'. It is in this context that the points discussed in this paper arise. We set forth in detail the ideas, objectives and methods adopted within the framework of medical aesthetics and its applied branch--medical cosmetology and expound the relations between them. We think the task of medical aesthetics is to study the human body in its entirety, concentrating on both internal and external beauty and put the findings into practice, whereas the task of medical cosmetology is to study and assess only the external beauty of the human body and to take action on that basis. Medical cosmetology is the enforcement of medical aesthetics, practised in order to give positive results connected with physical beauty, and is therefore easily understood by the layman. It is known that the development of medical cosmetology represents an important breakthrough in the development of medical aesthetics. We think that beauty should not be measured mechanically, always following the same pattern, but that it should be considered individually with everyone's own particular characteristics. The quality of physical attractiveness should be assessed jointly by the doctor and his patient or client, not solely by either of these individuals nor even by a group of doctors.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
