Abstract:Traditional nursing education is based strongly in empiric knowledge. However, just as important as empiric knowledge is aesthetic knowledge. Nursing involves multiple ways of knowing, and as such, educational institutions have a responsibility to assist students in gaining knowledge in nontraditonal ways. This article describes an assignment implemented in a pediatric course in a baccalaureate nursing program. Books and movies were used in a an undergraduate nursing course to help students gain insight into illness and disability from the client and family perspective. The students in the course were required to reflect on the meaning of the movie/book and the influence the book/movie had on the student. Based on student responses, this assignment was successful in meeting the objectives originally proposed. The books and movies provided a beginning introduction to, and an appreciation for, client and family experiences. Students were helped to understand illness, abuse, disability, and/or death from the client and/or family perspective.

Abstract:Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, Ahead of Print. Background: Despite their central role in hospital care, little research has explored medical-surgical nurses' perspectives on the rewarding aspects of and significant influences on caring for adults with intellectual disabilities, even though they are key to understanding this population's inequitable hospital outcomes. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used, and interviews were conducted with 13 medical-surgical nurses from the United States. Manifest content analysis was used to analyze the interview transcripts and categorize findings. Results: Five categories of significant influences: Preparedness to Care for People with Intellectual Disabilities, Communication, Caregiver Involvement, Ethical Concerns, and Context of Care, and four categories of rewards: Connecting, Making a Difference, Enjoyment, and Learning Opportunity, were revealed. Conclusion: Medical-surgical nurses derive meaning from connecting with and making a difference in the lives of hospitalized adults with intellectual disabilities, but face barriers to providing high-quality nursing care, resulting in dehumanized, delayed, or missed care.

Self-concept of the nursing profession among nursing students: An art-based qualitative analysis

Abstract:Background: In general, nursing students' self-concept of nursing is associated with their professional competence. Arts-based pedagogical approaches offer a creative way of supporting nursing education that improves clinical practice and creates meaningful learning. Purpose: The aim of the study is to understand the professional self-concept of nursing students through their self-artwork. Method: A qualitative descriptive design from an arts-based critical perspective was applied to nursing students from an accelerated program for non-nursing BA graduates. The thematic analysis utilized the constant comparative analysis method. Results: The study included 34 artworks created by 184 students. Three themes and 11 codes were identified. The themes are: "The question is why?"; "My story,"; and "Nursing is a value." The themes and codes reflect a naïve view of nursing self-concept, societal critique regarding the profession's poor image, and recognition of nursing as a feminist and transition tool, particularly among Arab women. Students expressed concerns about balancing professional commitments and their own needs. Conclusion: Use of artwork may help students express their professional self-concept, thoughts, feelings, and criticism. Nursing educators and leaders can use these insights to develop an education process adapted to the needs of students, professionals, and society.

Abstract:Despite unprecedented global environmental changes with widespread health effects, and rapid advances in nursing knowledge and education, the concept of environment within the discipline remains restricted. Environmental health continues to be marginalized in nursing education and practice, with nurses struggling to get beyond the slogans to arrive at practical applications. Framed by ecohealth and radical ecopsychology theory (concerned with nature connection, individual wellness, and social/earth justice), this study employed an online survey ( n = 40) with thematic content analysis. The study explored factors that influenced eco-consciousness, how it affected nursing work, and how it was integrated into practice The 40 participants from 3 Canadian provinces included 32 nurses employed in education and clinical practice and 8 student nurses. Three main themes emerged: awakening consciousness, challenges in the discipline and profession, and finding opportunities. In particular, the students expressed a need for early integration of environmental health teaching into curriculum. Results illustrate an ongoing knowledge–practice gap and highlight the frustration and dismay of nurses whose efforts remain marginalized. Motivations and opportunities for nurses to undertake an expanded role in adopting environmental health as central to the discipline and practice of nursing can and must be more intently harnessed. As curricular approaches are expanded, further inquiry is proposed into the role of both early experiences and nursing education to transform the response to the ecological crises of our times.

Abstract:AIM: This paper presents a review of the public and professional images of nursing in the literature and explores nurse image in the context of Strasen's self-image model.BACKGROUND: Nurses have struggled since the 1800s with the problem of image. What is known about nurses' image is from the perspective of others: the media, public or other healthcare professionals. Some hints of how nurses see themselves can be found in the literature that suggests how this image could be improved.METHOD: A literature review for all dates up to 2006 was undertaken using PubMed, Medline and CINAHL databases. Additional references were identified from this literature. Sentinel articles and books were manually searched to identify key concepts. Search words used were nurse, nursing, image and self-image. The findings were examined using the framework of Strasen's self-image model.FINDINGS: Public image appears to be intimately intertwined with nurse image. This creates the boundaries that confine and construct the image of nursing. As a profession, nurses do not have a very positive self-image nor do they think highly of themselves.CONCLUSION: Individually, each nurse has the power to shape the image of nursing. However, nurses must also work together to change the systems that perpetuate negative stereotypes of nurses' image.

Abstract:Theory is necessary to science and science grounds legitimate and essential practice. This is true for Nursing as a discipline of knowledge and a practicing profession. Nevertheless, should all science or research within a scientific field be focused on theoretical development and testing? Currently, various nursing theories exist to describe and explain the phenomena of nursing. Often, the development of nursing theory is in response to advancing ontologies and epistemologies of nursing. The advent of technology is one of these advances challenging the professional practice of nursing. How will nursing practice be made visible and realistic in the face of traditional nursing care practice? Nursing practice processes, derived from theories of nursing, provide opportunities for demonstrating practice grounded in the science of nursing. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of the emergent theory of Aesthetic Nursing Practice, focus on illuminating caring for person through the process of encountering, co-creating caring relationships, and meaningful engaging between the nurse and nursed through caring encounters occurring in caring situations. Five assumptions and a model of practice are described. As a contemporary theory of Nursing, it describes caring for persons who remain wholes and enhance their well-being.

Abstract:Background: Aesthetics is the art of nursing that is expressive, subjective, and visible in the act of caring in nursing practice. Aesthetics in nursing practice satisfies holistic needs and achieves the quality of whole-person care. Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the meanings of the lived experiences of cancer patients in terms of receiving care from the perspective of aesthetics in nursing practice. Methods: The hermeneutic phenomenological approach grounded on Gadamerian philosophy guided this study. Eleven Nepalese cancer patients who met the inclusion criteria shared their experiences through graphic illustrations (drawings) and interviews. Data were analyzed and interpreted following van Manen's phenomenological approach reflective of the four life worlds. The trustworthiness of findings was established following the criteria by Lincoln and Guba. Results: Thematic categories of the lived experience of cancer patients were revealed, reflecting the four life worlds: lived relation expressed as being nurtured as a family; lived space as appreciating the healing space; lived time as being hopeful; and lived body as receiving a new life. This experience was described as experiencing self and other while appreciating the healing space, being hopeful and nurtured as family and having a new life Implications for Practice: Aesthetics in nursing practice values on politely nurturing cancer patients as nurses' family members in a pleasant healing environment. Further, cancer patients experience having a new life.

Abstract:Aim: To explore the views and experiences of nurse academics about their professional work life. Design: A qualitative exploratory interview study. Methods: Data were collected during 2018/2019 using a semi-structured interview method with 19 experienced academic nurses from a range of academic levels in Australia. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed using a narrative approach. Ethics approval was granted by the relevant University Human Research Ethics Committee. Results: Participants provided detailed insights into the type of daily job stressors they faced. They shared narratives about their personal job experiences and how, at times, they chose to remain silent to maintain a cordial working relationship with some of their senior colleagues and leaders. The main themes were identified included a lack of work-life balance, incivility towards staff, increasing workloads and inequitable distribution, lack of recognition, negative workplace culture, lack of awareness of the importance of political astuteness and lack of leadership skills. Conclusion: To ensure a sustainable academic nursing workforce and provide a clearer understanding of job stress and what contributes to faculty decision to leave, areas of priority and strategies that needed attention were identified. These included effective mentoring of less-experienced staff and leadership styles that promote greater inclusiveness, being heard, valued and recognized, improved work-life balance and the need to have a sense of belonging. Impact: The study explored the job experiences of nurse academics and identified occupational stressors that directly influenced their daily work life. The findings have global implications for the recruitment and sustainability of nurse academics. This also impacts on their professional and work-life balance.

Abstract:The planet is facing ecological disaster, yet the environmental domain of nursing is currently understood as the immediate surroundings or circumstances of the individual or family. Such a definition keeps nurses from addressing the larger social, political, economic, and global issues that affect health. The author suggests that nursing, essentially a women's profession, and the environment share a long history of domination and oppression; and that an ecofeminist perspective offers a conceptual foundation for developing a new consciousness of the environment with the potential for liberating both.

Abstract:This article provides an analysis of esthetics, one type of nursing knowledge, in the context of the role of the nurse in family-centered nursing care of hospitalized children. Esthetic knowledge is explained through the analysis of vignettes from a clinical article. The components of the creative and expressive dimensions of esthetic knowledge are illustrated as are processes for assessing credibility or forming understanding. Finally, implications for nursing practice, education, and knowledge development are presented.

Abstract:Healthcare is a complex multidimensional system that depends upon effective communication and collaboration amongst all members of the health care team as the key ingredient for best patient care. In the current health care environment all health care providers are feeling the growing pressures on care delivery and the changing health dynamics which in many instances has negatively impacted their attitudes and behaviors toward medical care. Nursing is a key part of this process. In order to provide best patient care, affiliated organizations need to recognize how important staff satisfaction and engagement is to care continuity and provide the necessary resources and support to maintain staff physical, emotional, and behavioral well- being. The aim of the article is to review key literature findings to help organizations recognize the causes and consequences of stress and burnout and the importance of providing the appropriate support and resources to help nurses succeed.

Abstract:Abstract Background: Nursing in the United States of America is an aging workforce. This study sought to better understand the lived experience of aging nurses. Because nurses work in systems where other forms of interpersonal power dynamics may influence internalized and external stereotype an approach based on intersectional theory was applied. Methods: A qualitative thematic narrative analysis of an existing data set of first-person digital stories in the Nurstory project, authored by a group of nurses, was the data source. An emergent coding method was applied. The collection of five digital stories were analyzed. Results: All stories were first person accounts of experiences that represented their internalized reflections and elements of ageism in how their age interacted with their work environment. Dominant themes included: 1) Role constriction 2) Strength 3) Tired and (re)Tired 4) Age perceived and 5)Loneliness. Conclusions: These aging nursing stories add to the contextual layers of the aging healthcare workplace and aging nursing workforce. These individual experiences offer a nuanced understanding of the internalized responses to aging and ageism. These stories highlight socially constructed and socially reinforced attitudes that are complicated by the personal and occupational expectations of nurse’s work, their role and embedded hierarchies in healthcare. Stories such as these are important individual and collective indicators of lived experiences that offer a deeper understanding into the intersections of social identity and aging, that when listened to, can offer insight and a way forward in addressing the stereotype, discrimination and social inequities of ageism.

This challenge is borne out through the lens of the global nursing shortages with its focus on the supply of nurses to meet health system demands. However, nurses and midwives spend a significant part of their lives at work and so the need to pay attention to the conditions that facilitate flourishing at work is important. Abstract:Aim: This study explored why nurses chose to remain in the Western Australian workforce and to develop insights into the role of resilience of nurses and to identify the key characteristics of resilience displayed by these nurses. Background: Nursing is a stressful profession. Prolific quantitative research which measures job stress and resilience has been implemented; however, there is a dearth of qualitative studies which hear the personal narratives as to why nurses remain and thrive in a stressful workplace. Design/methods: Vignettes of nursing resilience reveal underlying themes of resilience where personal stories and events are presented as narrative. Portraiture recognises the inherent value of the nurses' stories giving attention to the nature of their resilience. Interpretation illuminates the portraits or verbal canvasses of the told experience, reflecting success and positivity despite disarray in healthcare settings. Results/findings: Eight themes were identified. The portraits highlight a sometimes imperceptible theme of resilience within nursing. Nurses are resilient; they rely on the social support of colleagues, family and friends to continue to bear their mantle of responsibility. They take pride in their work and accomplishments and give to others altruistically. They laugh, they love nursing and they keep the needs of their patients, clients, residents or students foremost. Conclusion: This paper describes the hallmarks of resilience demonstrated by nurses. Resilience and its relationship to coping in times of adversity are captured within the portraits presented.

Abstract:The nursing workforce mirrors the trend in population; that is, it is aging. Subsequently, older nurses experiencing some aging effects themselves are caring for more elderly patients needing more assistance with illness and wellness problems. To meet the growing demand for care in this era of nursing shortage, predicted to last beyond 2020, these nurses are needed to remain in the workforce longer. Lack of nurses in the workplace compromises patient care and increases job stress. Therefore, retention incentives need to be implemented to assist aging, experienced nurses to delay retirement or prevent them from leaving the profession early, as well as encouraging younger and future nurses to work longer. This article focuses on aging nurses, describing their demographics and needs, explicating their value and listing the resources and benefits needed to prolong their vital services in the workforce. (For this article, aging, older and mature refer to experienced nurses in their 40s, 50s and 60s.).
