Abstract:Structural changes in alloy 1570C (Al–5.0Mg–0.18Mn–0.2Sc–0.08Zr) during multidirectional isothermal forging (MIF) to a total strain e = 8.4 at 325°C and a strain rate of 10 –4 s –1 were investigated. After homogenization, the alloy had an equiaxed grain structure with an average grain size of 25 μm and a uniform distribution of coherent Al 3 (Sc,Zr) precipitates of 5–10 nm in diameter. In the early stages of the MIF ( е ≤ 2) the formation of deformation bands occurred, which developed in various directions due to periodic changes in the loading axis and fragmented the original grains. With increasing strain, a gradual increase in the number of bands and their misorientation angle led to a reduction in the size of fragments and transformation of the fragmented structure into an ultrafine-grained structure with a grain size below 2 μm, whose fraction was as high as 75% at e = 8.4. The mechanism responsible for the formation of new grains was similar to in situ or "continuous" dynamic recrystallization. An important role in this process at high deformation temperatures was played by Al 3 (Sc,Zr) dispersoids, which ensured high thermal stability of the forming structure. At the same time it was shown that high-temperature MIF resulted in reduction of the size of new fine grains and hardening of the alloy only at е ≤ 2–4. At higher strains, there was a slight increase in the size of new grains and a decrease in hardness due to an increase in particle size caused by the loss of coherence and the growth of some dispersoids located near the high-angle boundaries, whose fraction increased during MIF.
