Abstract:We introduce a sensitive carbon monoxide (CO) sensor based on a layer of palladium chloride dihydrate PdCl · 2H O (PCD) which can work at room temperature. The core part of the sensor is a plasmonic grating coated by single-layer PCD. When CO molecules hit on PCD which will change into palladium (Pd), the reflectivity of the grating will change a lot. First-principles calculations and finite-difference time-domain methods are employed to calculate the dielectric constant of PCD and the reflection spectra, respectively. Our results show that the maximum difference of the reflection spectra between before and after reactions ( ) reaches 20% times as the maximum of the reflection spectrum in certain conditions. According to our calculations, CO can be easily detected in our proposed structure. For example, we can peak the volume of the testing gas as 1 mL at 273 K and 101 kPa. The size of our proposed structure is 450 m m. The period and the height of the groove is 450nm. If all PCD turn to be Pd, the concentration of CO in the testing gas is no less than 2.2 ppm. Our proposed structure is quite useful and has potential applications in safety productions, food safety, and other fields.
