Abstract:Recent changing patterns of global climate have turned out to be a severe hazard to the horticulture crops production. A wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses often affect plants due to their sessile nature. Horticultural crop losses are mainly caused by abiotic factors such as drought, salt, heat, cold, floods, and ultraviolet radiation. For coping up with these adversities, well-developed mechanisms have been evolved in plants, which play a role in perceiving stress signals and enabling optimal growth responses. Interestingly, the use of phytohormones for suppressing the impact of abiotic stress has gained much attention in recent decades. For circumvention of stress at various levels, including physiological, molecular, as well as biochemical, a sophisticated mechanism is reported to be provided by the phytohormones, thus labeling these phytohormones a significant role in plant growth and development. Phytohormones can improves tolerance against abiotic stresses by increasing seed germination, seedling growth, leaf photosynthesis, root growth, and antioxidant enzymes and reducing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, malonaldehyde, and electrolyte leakage. Recent discoveries highlight the significant role of a variety of phytohormones including melatonin (MEL), Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), brassinosteroids (BRs), and strigolactones (SLs) in abiotic stress tolerance enhancement of horticultural plants. Thus, current review is aimed to summarize the developmental concepts regarding role of phytohormones in abiotic-stress mitigation, mainly in horticultural crops, along with the description of recent studies which identified the role of different phytohormones in stressed environments. Hence, such a review will help in paving the path for sustainable agriculture growth via involvement of phytohormones in enhancement of abiotic stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Abstract:The current status of changing climate has become a significant threat to the global production of horticultural crops. Phytohormones play a crucial role in providing a sophisticated mechanism to circumvent stress at different morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. Phytohormone mediates the abiotic stress-responsive signalling pathway and modulates other cell wall repair mechanisms, pH regulations, root hair formation, ionic homeostasis, chlorophyll content, synthesis, and leaf morphology. Auxin, cytokinin, ethylene, strigolactones, brassinosteroid, salicylic acid, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, and other phytohormones have also had other phytohormones recently been discovered to play a vital role in the production of abiotic stress-tolerant crops. Moreover, recently discovered phytohormone-like plant growth regulators such as polyamines, sugars, neurotransmitters, and strigolactones are an effective strategy to mitigate biotic and abiotic stress. Recent studies revealed the role of different phytohormone-like plant growth regulators and network signalling pathway that targets transcription factors and stress-related genes. Understanding the complex phytohormonal crosstalk in horticultural crops under various abiotic stress conditions will advance the knowledge about the synergistic/antagonistic role of developing stress-tolerant cultivars. Review on modulation of plant growth and development process by regulation of gene expression mediated by different phytohormones in horticultural crops is elusive. In this context, our review focusses on the role of phytohormone-like plant growth regulators and associated crosstalk among each other in plant growth and development under abiotic stress condition.

Abstract:Under natural conditions, the defense responses of plants exposed to combined abiotic and biotic stress factors, which can randomly interact with each other, are in many aspects different from the response induced by an individual stress. Predicted climatic changes through affecting these simultaneously occurring interactions might change the microclimate surrounding plants, plants’ susceptibility, the range of host microorganisms (i.e., symbionts or pathogens), and their simultaneous interaction with plants. The influence of climate change on interactions between environmental stresses and plants can lead to positive or negative impacts of one stress on the others and cause changes in strategies adopted by plants—either negative (i.e., susceptibility) or positive (i.e., tolerance)—thus causing modifications of primary and secondary metabolism of plants. Primary metabolism plays a key role in plants’ adaptive/defense response through the influence on the modulation of secondary metabolism and the activation of the host’s various defense mechanisms. Alterations in primary and secondary metabolism might include changes in the availability of nutrients, metabolically active compounds, or in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism and C/N balance.

Abstract:Plants face various biotic and abiotic environmental stresses in their lifetime. These environmental impacts reduce plant growth and productivity. Out of abiotic stressors, drought, salt, heat, and heavy metal ion contamination are the major challenges faced by plants. For overcoming these challenges, plants adopt certain physiological and biochemical changes. These changes include a variation in an aspect ratio of root-shoot length, leaf wilting, leaf abscission, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), altered relative water content, and accumulation of free radicals that can disrupt cellular homeostasis, thereby affecting cell viability. Plants also produce stress hormones, namely, abscisic acid and stress ethylene which induce closure of leaf stomata leading to reduced water loss from the plants and withstand various molecular and metabolic changes. Plants undergo physiological and metabolic changes, activating signal transduction mechanism to re-establish cellular homeostasis to generate tolerance against various abiotic stressors. The expression of stress-responsive genes is regulated not only by protein regulators but also by various regulatory RNAs.The deleterious impacts of abiotic stressors in plants can be overcome by adopting different agriculture practices along with genetic engineering approaches. However, these approaches are highly technical, time-consuming, and labor intensive and, therefore, are challenging to practice. One potential alternative to improve plant growth under abiotic stressors can be the application of plant-associated microbial communities which not only provide stress tolerance to the plants by producing a wide range of metabolites and enzymes that help plants to withstand various biotic and abiotic stresses but also improve crop productivity. Microbes mediate induction of physical and chemical changes in plants at a physical, biochemical, or molecular level in the presence of abiotic stressors to alleviate their deleterious effect, a process termed as induced systemic tolerance (IST). In this chapter, we present an elaborated account of the impact of plant-associated microbial communities on the host plants challenged to the abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Climate change-induced weather events, such as extreme temperatures, prolonged drought spells, or flooding, pose an enormous risk to crop productivity. Studies on the implications of multiple stresses may vary from those on a single stress. Usually, these stresses coincide, amplifying the extent of collateral damage and contributing to significant financial losses. The breadth of investigations focusing on the response of horticultural crops to a single abiotic stress is immense. However, the tolerance mechanisms of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses remain poorly understood. In this review, we described the most prevalent types of abiotic stresses that occur simultaneously and discussed them in in-depth detail regarding the physiological and molecular responses of horticultural crops. In particular, we discussed the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and metabolic responses of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses. Strategies to breed multi-stress-resilient lines have been presented. Our manuscript presents an interesting amount of proposed knowledge that could be valuable in generating resilient genotypes for multiple stressors.

Abstract:Water as an important environment factor that plays a vital role in the growth and development of terrestrial life. With global warming and the consequent more frequent occurrence of abnormal weather conditions, water stress has become an important adverse stress factor which influences the growth and development of both plants and herbivores. This article describes both the direct and indirect influence of water stress on phytophagous insects. Direct effects include humidity, rainfall and soil moisture content and indirect effects include the effects of water stress on the host plants and the natural enemies of herbivorous insects. The object of this review is to provide a theoretical reference for understanding the effects of water stress on agricultural pests and to thereby improve their prevention and control.

Abstract:Parasitic angiosperms, comprising a diverse group of flowering plants, are partially or fully dependent on their hosts to acquire water, mineral nutrients and organic compounds. Some have detrimental effects on agriculturally important crop plants. They are also intriguing model systems to study adaptive mechanisms required for the transition from an autotrophic to a heterotrophic metabolism. No less than any other plant, parasitic plants are affected by abiotic stress factors such as drought and changes in temperature, saline soils or contamination with metals or herbicides. These effects may be attributed to the direct influence of the stress, but also to diminished host availability and suitability. Although several studies on abiotic stress response of parasitic plants are available, still little is known about how abiotic factors affect host preferences, defense mechanisms of both hosts and parasites and the effects of combinations of abiotic and biotic stress experienced by the host plants. The latter effects are of specific interest as parasitic plants pose additional pressure on contemporary agriculture in times of climate change. This review summarizes the existing literature on abiotic stress response of parasitic plants, highlighting knowledge gaps and discussing perspectives for future research and potential agricultural applications.

Abstract:Numerous environmental conditions negatively affect plant production. Abiotic stresses, such as salinity, drought, temperature, and heavy metals, cause damage at the physiological, biochemical, and molecular level, and limit plant growth, development, and survival. Studies have indicated that small amine compounds, polyamines (PAs), play a key role in plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses. Pharmacological and molecular studies, as well as research using genetic and transgenic approaches, have revealed the favorable effects of PAs on growth, ion homeostasis, water maintenance, photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and antioxidant systems in many plant species under abiotic stress. PAs display a multitrack action: regulating the expression of stress response genes and the activity of ion channels; improving the stability of membranes, DNA, and other biomolecules; and interacting with signaling molecules and plant hormones. In recent years the number of reports indicating crosstalk between PAs and phytohormones in plant response to abiotic stresses has increased. Interestingly, some plant hormones, previously known as plant growth regulators, can also participate in plant response to abiotic stresses. Therefore, the main goal of this review is to summarize the most significant results that represent the interactions between PAs and plant hormones, such as abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, ethylene, jasmonates, and gibberellins, in plants under abiotic stress. The future perspectives for research focusing on the crosstalk between PAs and plant hormones were also discussed.

Abstract:Abiotic stress is the adverse effect of any abiotic factor on a plant in a given environment, impacting plants’ growth and development. These stress factors, such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, are often interrelated or in conjunction with each other. Plants have evolved mechanisms to sense these environmental challenges and make adjustments to their growth in order to survive and reproduce. In this review, we summarized recent studies on plant stress sensing and its regulatory mechanism, emphasizing signal transduction and regulation at multiple levels. Then we presented several strategies to improve plant growth under stress based on current progress. Finally, we discussed the implications of research on plant response to abiotic stresses for high-yielding crops and agricultural sustainability. Studying stress signaling and regulation is critical to understand abiotic stress responses in plants to generate stress-resistant crops and improve agricultural sustainability.

Abstract:Plant growth and development are critically influenced by unpredictable abiotic factors. To survive fluctuating changes in their environments, plants have had to develop robust adaptive mechanisms. The dynamic and complementary actions of the auxin and cytokinin pathways regulate a plethora of developmental processes, and their ability to crosstalk makes them ideal candidates for mediating stress-adaptation responses. Other crucial signaling molecules responsible for the tremendous plasticity observed in plant morphology and in response to abiotic stress are reactive oxygen species (ROS). Proper temporal and spatial distribution of ROS and hormone gradients is crucial for plant survival in response to unfavorable environments. In this regard, the convergence of ROS with phytohormone pathways acts as an integrator of external and developmental signals into systemic responses organized to adapt plants to their environments. Auxin and cytokinin signaling pathways have been studied extensively. Nevertheless, we do not yet understand the impact on plant stress tolerance of the sophisticated crosstalk between the two hormones. Here, we review current knowledge on the function of auxin and cytokinin in redirecting growth induced by abiotic stress in order to deduce their potential points of crosstalk.

Physiological study in horticultural crops like other crops, involves the basic and practically useful studies on processes such as water and nutrients in plant, nutrient supply of plants, production of primary and secondary metabolites, photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, evapo-transpiration, plant stress physiology, growth and development responsible for crop production with the techniques to quantify and optimization of these processes for final economic yield production. The production of horticultural crops can be characterized as an open and highly complex system affected by climate, soil, cropping system and interactions between these factors. Plant growth and development are directly and indirectly influenced by environmental factors, in order to obtain a successful production it is essential to understand clearly how these factors affect plant physiology. Abstract:Increasing temperature leads to intensive water evaporation, contributing to global warming and consequently leading to drought stress. These events are likely to trigger modifications in plant physiology and microbial functioning due to the altered availability of nutrients. Plants exposed to drought have developed different strategies to cope with stress by morphological, physiological, anatomical, and biochemical responses. First, visible changes influence plant biomass and consequently limit the yield of crops. The presented review was undertaken to discuss the impact of climate change with respect to drought stress and its impact on the performance of plants inoculated with plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM). The main challenge for optimal performance of horticultural plants is the application of selected, beneficial microorganisms which actively support plants during drought stress. The most frequently described biochemical mechanisms for plant protection against drought by microorganisms are the production of phytohormones, antioxidants and xeroprotectants, and the induction of plant resistance. Rhizospheric or plant surface-colonizing (rhizoplane) and interior (endophytic) bacteria and fungi appear to be a suitable alternative for drought-stress management. Application of various biopreparations containing PGPM seems to provide hope for a relatively cheap, easy to apply and efficient way of alleviating drought stress in plants, with implications in productivity and food condition.

Abstract:Climate change presents numerous challenges for agriculture, including frequent events of plant abiotic stresses such as elevated temperatures that lead to heat stress (HS). As the primary driving factor of climate change, HS threatens global food security and biodiversity. In recent years, HS events have negatively impacted plant physiology, reducing plant's ability to maintain disease resistance and resulting in lower crop yields. Plants must adapt their priorities toward defense mechanisms to tolerate stress in challenging environments. Furthermore, selective breeding and long-term domestication for higher yields have made crop varieties vulnerable to multiple stressors, making them more susceptible to frequent HS events. Studies on climate change predict that concurrent HS and biotic stresses will become more frequent and severe in the future, potentially occurring simultaneously or sequentially. While most studies have focused on singular stress effects on plant systems to examine how plants respond to specific stresses, the simultaneous occurrence of HS and biotic stresses pose a growing threat to agricultural productivity. Few studies have explored the interactions between HS and plant-biotic interactions. Here, we aim to shed light on the physiological and molecular effects of HS and biotic factor interactions (bacteria, fungi, oomycetes, nematodes, insect pests, pollinators, weedy species, and parasitic plants), as well as their combined impact on crop growth and yields. We also examine recent advances in designing and developing various strategies to address multi-stress scenarios related to HS and biotic factors.

Abstract:Plants exposed to a variety of abiotic and biotic stressors including environmental pollution and global warming pose significant threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Despite substantial literature documenting how plants adapt to distinct stressors, there still is a lack of knowledge regarding responses to multiple stressors and how these affects growth and development. Exposure of plants to concurrent biotic and abiotic stressors such as cadmium and drought, leads to pronounced inhibition in above ground biomass, imbalance in oxidative homeostasis, nutrient assimilation and stunted root growth, elucidating the synergistic interactions of multiple stressors culminating in adverse physiological outcomes. Impact of elevated heavy metal and water deficit exposure extends beyond growth and development, influencing the biodiversity of the microenvironment including the rhizosphere nutrient profile and microbiome. These findings have significant implications for plant-stress interactions and ecosystem functioning that prompt immediate action in order to eliminate effect of pollution and address global environmental issues to promote sustainable tolerance for multiple stress combinations in plants. Here, we review plant tolerance against stress combinations, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary approaches and advanced technologies, such as omics and molecular tools, to achieve a comprehensive understanding of underlying stress tolerance mechanisms. To accelerate progress towards developing stress-tolerance in plants against multiple environmental stressors, future research in plant stress tolerance should adopt a collaborative approach, involving researchers from multiple disciplines with diverse expertise and resources.

Abstract:The quality of horticultural products is the result of the interaction of different factors, including grower's crop management ability, genotype, and environment. Sub-optimal environmental conditions during plant growth can induce abiotic stresses and reduce the crop performance with yield reduction and quality losses. However, abiotic stresses can induce several physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses in plants, aiming to cope with the stressful conditions. It is well known that these abiotic stresses are also elicitors of the biosynthesis of many metabolites in plants, including a wide range of bioactive compounds, which firstly serve as functional molecules for crop adaptation, but they have also a great interest for their beneficial effects on human health. Nowadays, the consumer is oriented to low-energy foods with low fat content, but at the same time, growing attention is paid to the presence of bioactive molecules, which are recognized as health-related compounds and concur to the nutraceutical value of plant-derived foods. In this context, fruit and vegetables play an important role as sources of bioactive ingredients in the diet. At the cultivation level, the understanding of crop responses to abiotic stresses and how they act in the biosynthesis/accumulation of these bioactive compounds is crucial. In fact, controlled abiotic stresses can be used as tools for improving the nutraceutical value of fruit and vegetables. This review focuses on the quality of vegetables and fruits as affected by preharvest abiotic stressors, with particular attention to the effect on the nutraceutical aspects.

The agriculture sector is significantly impacted by the weather and environment. Traditionalfarming methods and the food production required to sustain the nation’s growing population might be threatened by climate change.Improved cultivars created via breeding for a greater harvest index and disease tolerance were readily embraced during this periodof relatively consistent weather. Extreme climatic variability is projected due to climate change in this century. In many nations thatproduce crops, the agricultural climate will likely be warmer with more unpredictable rainfall, and stress spikes will be more severe. Tomaintain a growing population, agricultural productivity must be increased under more unfavourable environmental conditions. UsingGPS locators and climatic data from across the world, it is now feasible to comprehensively examine the genetic diversity in ancientlocal landraces to characterise the natural selection for local adaptation and to identify potential germplasm for tolerances to highstresses . With the use of candidate gene techniques and next generation sequencing, the physiological and biochemical componentsof these manifestations may be genomically examined. Wild relatives of crops possess practically untapped genetic diversity for abioticand biotic stress tolerances and may greatly improve the domesticated gene pools presently available as a survival omics strategy toassist crops endure the expected extremes of climate change. It is an issue to increase agricultural productivity in the face of climatechange. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to combine a number of disciplines, including eco-geographical assessments of geneticresources, modern advances in genomics, agronomy, and farm management, all of which are backed by knowledge of how genotypeenvironmentinteraction affects crop climate adaptability.

Abstract:Agriculture production faces many abiotic stresses, mainly drought, salinity, low and high temperature. These abiotic stresses inhibit plants' genetic potential, which is the cause of huge reduction in crop productivity, decrease potent yields for important crop plants by more than 50% and imbalance agriculture's sustainability. They lead to changes in the physio-morphological, molecular, and biochemical nature of the plants and change plants' regular metabolism, which makes them a leading cause of losses in crop productivity. These changes in plant systems also help to mitigate abiotic stress conditions. To initiate the signal during stress conditions, sensor molecules of the plant perceive the stress signal from the outside and commence a signaling cascade to send a message and stimulate nuclear transcription factors to provoke specific gene expression. To mitigate the abiotic stress, plants contain several methods of avoidance, adaption, and acclimation. In addition to these, to manage stress conditions, plants possess several tolerance mechanisms which involve ion transporters, osmoprotectants, proteins, and other factors associated with transcriptional control, and signaling cascades are stimulated to offset abiotic stress-associated biochemical and molecular changes. Plant growth and survival depends on the ability to respond to the stress stimulus, produce the signal, and start suitable biochemical and physiological changes. Various important factors, such as the biochemical, physiological, and molecular mechanisms of plants, including the use of microbiomes and nanotechnology to combat abiotic stresses, are highlighted in this article.
