Abstract:Plants face various biotic and abiotic environmental stresses in their lifetime. These environmental impacts reduce plant growth and productivity. Out of abiotic stressors, drought, salt, heat, and heavy metal ion contamination are the major challenges faced by plants. For overcoming these challenges, plants adopt certain physiological and biochemical changes. These changes include a variation in an aspect ratio of root-shoot length, leaf wilting, leaf abscission, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), altered relative water content, and accumulation of free radicals that can disrupt cellular homeostasis, thereby affecting cell viability. Plants also produce stress hormones, namely, abscisic acid and stress ethylene which induce closure of leaf stomata leading to reduced water loss from the plants and withstand various molecular and metabolic changes. Plants undergo physiological and metabolic changes, activating signal transduction mechanism to re-establish cellular homeostasis to generate tolerance against various abiotic stressors. The expression of stress-responsive genes is regulated not only by protein regulators but also by various regulatory RNAs.The deleterious impacts of abiotic stressors in plants can be overcome by adopting different agriculture practices along with genetic engineering approaches. However, these approaches are highly technical, time-consuming, and labor intensive and, therefore, are challenging to practice. One potential alternative to improve plant growth under abiotic stressors can be the application of plant-associated microbial communities which not only provide stress tolerance to the plants by producing a wide range of metabolites and enzymes that help plants to withstand various biotic and abiotic stresses but also improve crop productivity. Microbes mediate induction of physical and chemical changes in plants at a physical, biochemical, or molecular level in the presence of abiotic stressors to alleviate their deleterious effect, a process termed as induced systemic tolerance (IST). In this chapter, we present an elaborated account of the impact of plant-associated microbial communities on the host plants challenged to the abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses, such as low or high temperature, deficient or excessive water, high salinity, heavy metals, and ultraviolet radiation, are hostile to plant growth and development, leading to great crop yield penalty worldwide. It is getting imperative to equip crops with multistress tolerance to relieve the pressure of environmental changes and to meet the demand of population growth, as different abiotic stresses usually arise together in the field. The feasibility is raised as land plants actually have established more generalized defenses against abiotic stresses, including the cuticle outside plants, together with unsaturated fatty acids, reactive species scavengers, molecular chaperones, and compatible solutes inside cells. In stress response, they are orchestrated by a complex regulatory network involving upstream signaling molecules including stress hormones, reactive oxygen species, gasotransmitters, polyamines, phytochromes, and calcium, as well as downstream gene regulation factors, particularly transcription factors. In this review, we aimed at presenting an overview of these defensive systems and the regulatory network, with an eye to their practical potential via genetic engineering and/or exogenous application.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses are the foremost limiting factors for agricultural productivity. Crop plants need to cope up adverse external pressure created by environmental and edaphic conditions with their intrinsic biological mechanisms, failing which their growth, development, and productivity suffer. Microorganisms, the most natural inhabitants of diverse environments exhibit enormous metabolic capabilities to mitigate abiotic stresses. Since microbial interactions with plants are an integral part of the living ecosystem, they are believed to be the natural partners that modulate local and systemic mechanisms in plants to offer defense under adverse external conditions. Plant-microbe interactions comprise complex mechanisms within the plant cellular system. Biochemical, molecular and physiological studies are paving the way in understanding the complex but integrated cellular processes. Under the continuous pressure of increasing climatic alterations, it now becomes more imperative to define and interpret plant-microbe relationships in terms of protection against abiotic stresses. At the same time, it also becomes essential to generate deeper insights into the stress-mitigating mechanisms in crop plants for their translation in higher productivity. Multi-omics approaches comprising genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics integrate studies on the interaction of plants with microbes and their external environment and generate multi-layered information that can answer what is happening in real-time within the cells. Integration, analysis and decipherization of the big-data can lead to a massive outcome that has significant chance for implementation in the fields. This review summarizes abiotic stresses responses in plants in-terms of biochemical and molecular mechanisms followed by the microbe-mediated stress mitigation phenomenon. We describe the role of multi-omics approaches in generating multi-pronged information to provide a better understanding of plant-microbe interactions that modulate cellular mechanisms in plants under extreme external conditions and help to optimize abiotic stresses. Vigilant amalgamation of these high-throughput approaches supports a higher level of knowledge generation about root-level mechanisms involved in the alleviation of abiotic stresses in organisms.

Abstract:In a global scenario, the climate is influenced by climatic changes frequently, which often promotes infections and harms agricultural productivity. Plants have their own systems to restore such unusual circumstances, but biomass and yield suffer as a result of this change. This typical condition generally comes under the stress that affects plant growth and development. The stresses are abiotic and biotic which directly affect the plant responses and create survival problems in the plant life. Abiotically, drought and salinity stress reduce germination rates and increase reactive oxygen species (ROS); high temperature affects cellular proteins and low temperature affects metabolic processes; heavy metals interfere with various physiological and metabolic processes. Plants become unhealthy when they are exposed to biotic stress. As a result, to fulfill the rising demand for food, we must focus on plant stress resistance research and development. In order to counteract stress, biologicals such as plant growth-promoting microbes (PGPMs) are becoming increasingly crucial. These biologicals are responsible for ROS generation, which protects plants from stress. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and plant growth-promoting fungi (PGPF) are PGPMs that have been confirmed to help plants' growth and development under a variety of stresses. These microorganisms linked with plants are extremely beneficial to agricultural and environmental sustainability. Many of the PGPMs can survive but some do not tolerate stress. In this regard, we need to develop a possible biofertilizer by using stress-tolerant microbial consortia. In this context, we sought to explore the positive impacts of microorganisms utilized in stress tolerance and agricultural production, as well as explain the processes of microbes during various stress conditions, in order to explain certain problems that occur with agricultural workers.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures pose significant challenges to plant growth, development, and productivity. Understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying plant adaptation to these stresses is crucial for developing strategies to enhance crop resilience and ensure food security. This review explores the key physiological responses of plants to abiotic stress, including stress perception and signaling, osmotic adjustment, antioxidant defense, and hormonal regulation. We highlight recent advances in our understanding of these mechanisms and discuss their implications for crop improvement. Additionally, we examine the role of genetic and epigenetic modifications in enhancing stress tolerance and the potential of biotechnological approaches to develop stress-resistant crop varieties. By integrating physiological insights with modern breeding and biotechnological techniques, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge and future directions in plant adaptation to abiotic stress.

Abstract:Agriculture production faces many abiotic stresses, mainly drought, salinity, low and high temperature. These abiotic stresses inhibit plants' genetic potential, which is the cause of huge reduction in crop productivity, decrease potent yields for important crop plants by more than 50% and imbalance agriculture's sustainability. They lead to changes in the physio-morphological, molecular, and biochemical nature of the plants and change plants' regular metabolism, which makes them a leading cause of losses in crop productivity. These changes in plant systems also help to mitigate abiotic stress conditions. To initiate the signal during stress conditions, sensor molecules of the plant perceive the stress signal from the outside and commence a signaling cascade to send a message and stimulate nuclear transcription factors to provoke specific gene expression. To mitigate the abiotic stress, plants contain several methods of avoidance, adaption, and acclimation. In addition to these, to manage stress conditions, plants possess several tolerance mechanisms which involve ion transporters, osmoprotectants, proteins, and other factors associated with transcriptional control, and signaling cascades are stimulated to offset abiotic stress-associated biochemical and molecular changes. Plant growth and survival depends on the ability to respond to the stress stimulus, produce the signal, and start suitable biochemical and physiological changes. Various important factors, such as the biochemical, physiological, and molecular mechanisms of plants, including the use of microbiomes and nanotechnology to combat abiotic stresses, are highlighted in this article.

Abstract:Plants, being immobile, are vulnerable to a variety of environmental challenges, including abiotic stresses such as high temperatures, low temperatures, flooding, drought, heavy metal toxicity, and high salt levels, all of which can negatively impact plant growth and productivity. These stresses can cause a variety of plant responses, including the production of reactive oxygen species, damage to cell membranes, and decreased photosynthetic efficiency which can disrupt growth and development, by impacting biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes. Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to deal with these abiotic stresses. The way that plants perceive and respond to stress signals plays a crucial role in initiating the resistance mechanisms. Recent research has highlighted the complexity of the molecular processes involved in plant responses to abiotic stress, including signal perception, signaling cascades, gene expression, protein synthesis and post-translational modifications. This review provides an overview of how plants respond to major abiotic stresses, including cold, heat, drought, and salinity, on both at physiological and molecular level. We have also discussed the ways in which plants sense various stresses and use molecular signaling to enhance tolerance to environmental stresses.

Abstract:In their environment, plants are exposed to a multitude of abiotic and biotic stresses that differ in intensity, duration and severity. As sessile organisms, they cannot escape these stresses, but instead have developed strategies to overcome them or to compensate for the consequences of stress exposure. Defence can take place at different levels and the mechanisms involved are thought to differ in efficiency across these levels. To minimise metabolic constraints and to reduce the costs of stress defence, plants prioritise first‐line defence strategies in the apoplastic space, involving ascorbate, defensins and small peptides, as well as secondary metabolites, before cellular processes are affected. In addition, a large number of different symplastic mechanisms also provide efficient stress defence, including chemical antioxidants, antioxidative enzymes, secondary metabolites, defensins and other peptides as well as proteins. At both the symplastic and the apoplastic level of stress defence and compensation, a number of specialised transporters are thought to be involved in exchange across membranes that still have not been identified, and information on the regeneration of different defence compounds remains ambiguous. In addition, strategies to overcome and compensate for stress exposure operate not only at the cellular, but also at the organ and whole‐plant levels, including stomatal regulation, and hypersensitive and systemic responses to prevent or reduce the spread of stress impacts within the plant. Defence can also take place at the ecosystem level by root exudation of signalling molecules and the emission of volatile organic compounds, either directly or indirectly into the rhizosphere and/or the aboveground atmosphere. The mechanisms by which plants control the production of these compounds and that mediate perception of stressful conditions are still not fully understood. Here we summarise plant defence strategies from the cellular to ecosystem level, discuss their advantages and disadvantages for plant growth and development, elucidate the current state of research on the transport and regeneration capacity of defence metabolites, and outline insufficiently explored questions for further investigation.

Abstract:Stresses are the prime factor for limiting agricultural productivity. ROS attacks biomolecules and interrupts the regular mechanism of the cell that eventually prompts to cell death. Crops requisite to acclimatize adverse external stress generated by ecological conditions with their native biological mechanisms defeated which their growths as well as productivity endure. Microbes, the supreme natural occupants of diverse environments, have developed intricate physiological and metabolic mechanism to manage with potentially toxic oxygen species that are generated by environmental stresses. Subsequently, the interaction of microbial population with plants is an essential for the ecosystem, and microbes are the natural partners that accommodate in plants to combat with antagonistic environment. Plant microbiome involves intricate mechanisms inside the plant cell. Molecular, physiological as well as biochemical studies support to understand the intricate and integrated cellular processes of plant–microbe interactions. During the incessant stress by increasing environmental variations, it is becoming more essential to characterize and decipher plant–microbe association in relation to defense against environmental challenges.

Abstract:Abiotic stresses are the most significant factors reducing agricultural productivity. Plants face extreme environmental conditions that may affect their biological mechanisms, thereby influencing their growth and development. Microorganisms possess substantial metabolites that aid in helping plants mitigate abiotic stresses. Plants’ interaction with microbes constitutes a diversified ecosystem, as sometimes both the partners share a mutualistic relationship. Endophytes, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) are examples of microorganisms that play an essential role in alleviating abiotic stresses and, hence, improving plant growth. The plant–microbe interaction leads to the modulation of complex mechanisms in the plant cellular system. Moreover, the residing microbial flora also inhibits the phytopathogens, therefore, it becomes part of plants’ innate defense system. Keeping in view the growing environmental concerns, it is important to identify the role of the plant microbiome in the transportation of nutrients to maintain sustainable production. Furthermore, it is important to identify the factors enabling plants to recruit beneficial microbial species and how to deal with the potential pathogens. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the impacts of various abiotic stressors on agricultural productivity and the role of beneficial microorganisms in mitigating the negative effects of abiotic stresses. The literature review also shows that the beneficial microbes, including PGPRs, AMFs, and endophytes, adopt various mechanisms for ameliorating the negative effects of various stresses. It has been observed that biochar and microbes, either individually or in combination, can play a significant role in maintaining plant growth under stress conditions. Although conventional inoculation of beneficial microbes mitigates abiotic stresses and enhances productivity, the advancement in genetic engineering would help transfer specific genes from the microbes to plants to aid in abiotic stress mitigation.

Abstract:Plants exposed to a variety of abiotic and biotic stressors including environmental pollution and global warming pose significant threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services. Despite substantial literature documenting how plants adapt to distinct stressors, there still is a lack of knowledge regarding responses to multiple stressors and how these affects growth and development. Exposure of plants to concurrent biotic and abiotic stressors such as cadmium and drought, leads to pronounced inhibition in above ground biomass, imbalance in oxidative homeostasis, nutrient assimilation and stunted root growth, elucidating the synergistic interactions of multiple stressors culminating in adverse physiological outcomes. Impact of elevated heavy metal and water deficit exposure extends beyond growth and development, influencing the biodiversity of the microenvironment including the rhizosphere nutrient profile and microbiome. These findings have significant implications for plant-stress interactions and ecosystem functioning that prompt immediate action in order to eliminate effect of pollution and address global environmental issues to promote sustainable tolerance for multiple stress combinations in plants. Here, we review plant tolerance against stress combinations, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary approaches and advanced technologies, such as omics and molecular tools, to achieve a comprehensive understanding of underlying stress tolerance mechanisms. To accelerate progress towards developing stress-tolerance in plants against multiple environmental stressors, future research in plant stress tolerance should adopt a collaborative approach, involving researchers from multiple disciplines with diverse expertise and resources.

Abstract:Global warming and climate change intensified the occurrence and severity of abiotic stresses that seriously affect the growth and development of plants,especially, plant photosynthesis. The direct impact of abiotic stress on the activity of photosynthesis is disruption of all photosynthesis components such as photosystem I and II, electron transport, carbon fixation, ATP generating system and stomatal conductance. The photosynthetic system of plants reacts to the stress differently, according to the plant type, photosynthetic systems (C₃ or C₄), type of the stress, time and duration of the occurrence and several other factors. The plant responds to the stresses by a coordinate chloroplast and nuclear gene expression. Chloroplast, thylakoid membrane, and nucleus are the main targets of regulated proteins and metabolites associated with photosynthetic pathways. Rapid responses of plant cell metabolism and adaptation to photosynthetic machinery are key factors for survival of plants in a fluctuating environment. This review gives a comprehensive view of photosynthesis-related alterations at the gene and protein levels for plant adaptation or reaction in response to abiotic stress.

Abstract:Today, agriculture is facing a tremendous threat from the climate change menace. As human survival is dependent on a constant supply of food from plants as the primary producers, we must aware of the underlying molecular mechanisms that plants have acquired as a result of molecular evolution to cope this rapidly changing environment. This understanding will help us in designing programs aimed at developing crop plant cultivars best suited to our needs of a sustainable agriculture. The field of systems biology is rapidly progressing, and new insight is coming out about the molecular mechanisms involved in abiotic stress tolerance. There is a cascade of changes in transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome of plants during these stress responses. We have tried to cover most pronounced recent developments in the field of "omics" related to abiotic stress tolerance of plants. These changes are very coordinated, and often there is crosstalk between different components of stress tolerance. The functions of various molecular entities are becoming more clear and being associated with more precise biological phenomenon.

Abstract:Climate change has led to an increased number of abiotic and biotic stresses, and the plants experience these stresses simultaneously. Abiotic stresses like drought, heat, and salinity greatly influence plant-pathogen interaction when co-occurring with the biotic stressors. Recent studies have shown that combined stresses induce unique physiological and molecular responses, which involve rewiring of the hormonal pathways, accumulation of various metabolites and induction or suppression of immunity genes in plants. The net impact of the interaction, which depends on a multitude of factors, thus, modulates the effect of biotic stressors on plants by either increasing or decreasing plants susceptibility towards them. The present review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on the biotic and abiotic stress interactions in plants. We have discussed the role of drought, salt, and heat stress in influencing pathogen infection in plants in brief. Plants responses to the three types of combined stresses are compared to decipher the common and unique plant responses to these stresses.

Abstract:Rhizosphere microbiomes and plant-microbiome interactions govern many key biogeochemical processes important for plant nutrition and their ability to tolerate biotic and abiotic stresses. Several studies suggest interactions of microbes with crop plants play a prominent role in adaptation, maintenance, and survival of both the partners as well as for soil health in a number of abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heavy metal contamination, etc., by regulating changes in terms of biochemical, physiological, and molecular processes of plants. The strain specificity plays crucial role in exploiting characteristic potential of candidate microbe to provide tolerance and alleviate negative impact of abiotic stresses in plants. During stress management, plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) have been shown to activate plant antioxidant defense machinery by regulating the activity of scavenging key enzymes to level over produced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and by regulating the amounts of proteins, polysaccharides, and important phytohormones. Many Rhizobacteria have also been shown to produce ACC deaminase enzyme initiating a cascade of physiological and biochemical changes in the plant thereby helping them withstand effects of abiotic stresses. Some of the examples for such PGPB include Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Bacillus, Bradyrhizobium, Burkholderia, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Methylobacterium, and Variovorax. In view of the projections from climate-smart agriculture research, predictions for reduced rainfall and increased effects of other abiotic stresses such as salinity across many agricultural regions worldwide are being calculated, exploitation of the beneficial plant–microbe interactions to alleviate abiotic stress effects in crops should be one of the key approaches to improving global food production.

Abstract:Under the constant strain of rising environmental changes it is now more important than ever to describe and understand plant microbe interactions in terms of abiotic stress resistance. Multi omics including transcriptomics, genomics, RNomics etc. like approaches bring together studies on plants interactions with microbes and plant growth regulators to provide multi layered data. Comprehensive understanding of plant microbe mediated mechanisms and hormone signaling networks for abiotic stress tolerance is necessary to translate their practical use for plant survival under extreme conditions. This will pave the way for climate smart agriculture research that will help in progress and manipulation of advantageous microbes and plant regulators as foundation of crop acclimation to changing climatic conditions thereby strengthening further sustainable agriculture. For crop development, it is crucial to understand the fine tuning and integration of many signals created by microbial interactions in plants. This study discusses plant responses to microbe mediated stress relief that have been documented so far. Analyzing the plant characteristics that were heterogeneously related to soil metabolites, minerals, and microorganisms utilizing omics techniques. This will aid in the further adoption of omics-based methodologies while taking into account the various tactics used by microorganisms. Present review provides indepth understanding of the interplay between Plant growth promoting microorganisms with crop plants to circumvent the undesirable impacts of environmental stress on crop cultivar and will help to implement omics based strategies to overcome abiotic stresses in plants.

Abstract:Environmental stresses severely impair plant growth, resulting in significant crop yield and quality loss. Among various abiotic factors, salt and drought stresses are one of the major factors that affect the nutrients and water uptake by the plants, hence ultimately various physiological aspects of the plants that compromises crop yield. Continuous efforts have been made to investigate, dissect and improve plant adaptations at the molecular level in response to drought and salinity stresses. In this context, the plant beneficial microbiome presents in the rhizosphere, endosphere, and phyllosphere, also referred as second genomes of the plant is well known for its roles in plant adaptations. Exploration of beneficial interaction of fungi with host plants known as mycorrhizal association is one such special interaction that can facilitates the host plants adaptations. Mycorrhiza assist in alleviating the salinity and drought stresses of plants via redistributing the ion imbalance through translocation to different parts of the plants, as well as triggering oxidative machinery. Mycorrhiza association also regulates the level of various plant growth regulators, osmolytes and assists in acquiring minerals that are helpful in plant's adaptation against extreme environmental stresses. The current review examines the role of various plant growth regulators and plants' antioxidative systems, followed by mycorrhizal association during drought and salt stresses.

Abstract:: The most important types of abiotic stress that affect agricultural crops throughout the world are drought and salinity. These stresses will continue to worsen as the current climate crisis progresses. Plants have evolved a complex set of mechanisms in order to protect themselves from salt and drought. At the macrobiological level, these include alterations in growth rate, water balance, antioxidant defenses, and photosynthesis. Altered metabolites include proline, carbohydrates, glycine betaine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and polyamines. It is not surprising, thus, that one of the most important research areas of plant biology is the study of plant responses to abiotic stress and stress tolerance mechanisms. The methods, used in this study, are diverse, including the study of physiological properties, biochemical research, and metabolomics approaches toward abiotic stress. This awareness should lead to the development of (near) future, sustainable and better-adapted agriculture in the sense of global warming and environmental emission scenarios. Also, different information presented in this overview can be regarded by the scientific community to produce tolerant cultivars in response to salinity and drought stresses.
