Abstract:Azobenzene (Azo) liquid-crystalline polymers are intriguing due to their unique photo-induced isomerization and supramolecular chirality. However, clarification on multicomponent chiral induction towards Azo polymers remains ambiguous and challenging. Herein, chiral solvents and amines were employed to control the chiroptical activity of achiral Azo polymers. Methyl L-/D-lactate was added as the poor solvent and chiral inducer to achieve the first chiral induction in Azo aggregates. Chiral amines were utilized for the second chiral induction based on the acid-base interactions between the carboxyl groups of polymers and amines. The chiral enhancement and inversion of Azo units could be observed through the synergistic or antagonistic effect between solvents and amines. The impacts of solvent, chemical structures, feed ratio, enantiomeric excess, and temperature on supramolecular chirality were systematically studied. Furthermore, this system displayed the chiroptical switching property and chiral recovery under reversible irradiation.

Abstract:An achiral chromophore can acquire a chiral spectroscopic signature when interacting with a chiral environment. This so-called induced chirality is documented in electronic or vibrational circular dichroism, which arises from the coupling between electric and magnetic transition dipoles. Here, we demonstrate that a chiroptical response is also induced within the electric dipole approximation by observing the asymmetric scattering of a photoelectron ejected from an achiral chromophore in interaction with a chiral host. In a phenol-methyloxirane complex, removing an electron from an achiral aromatic π orbital localised on the phenol moiety results in an intense and opposite photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) for the two enantiomeric complexes with (R) and (S) methyloxirane, evidencing the long-range effect (~5 Å) of the scattering chiral potential. This induced chirality has important structural and analytical implications, discussed here in the context of growing interest in laser-based PECD, for in situ, real time enantiomer determination.

Abstract:Superchiral light, generated by the interference of two counter-propagating circularly polarized light (CPL) with same frequency, opposite handedness and different intensity, exhibits enhanced dissymmetry in its interaction with chiral molecules, and has the potential for ultrasensitive detection and characterization of chiral molecules. It is anticipated that the enhanced optical dissymmetry in superchiral light (SCL) field may be utilized to promote asymmetric photochemical reactions efficiency. Herein we reported SCL impart greater chiral bias to trigger asymmetric photo-polymerization reaction from initially achiral diacetylene (DA) monomer, and the enhanced optical dissymmetry for whole polydiacetylene (PDA) films could be achieved. An explanation based on the chiral transfer and amplification of chiral bias from SCL during the polymerization process has been proposed. Moreover, thus formed chiral PDA films polymerized by SCL exhibited enhanced enantioselective recognition ability, and can serve as a direct visual probe for the discrimination of some specific enantiomers.

Abstract:Induction, transfer, and modulation of intriguing supramolecular chirality were achieved in a chiral domino-type polymer system using a chiral α-end azobenzene (Azo) moiety as one chiral terminus and achiral Azo repeating units as building blocks. The Azo polymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization were imparted with well-controlled chain lengths and a chiral moiety at a well-defined position. One chiral terminus can effectively dictate the helical orientation of the achiral Azo stacks in the aggregation state. The spacer length between the chiral residue and the achiral repeating units dominates the preferred handedness of the side-chain Azo stacks. For instance, the R-configuration moiety with a short alkyl chain (with 0, 2, and 3 carbons) induces right-handed supramolecular chirality, whereas those with long alkyl chains (with 4, 5, and 6 carbons) induce the opposite helical orientation of the Azo units. Moreover, the chiral regulation of polymer aggregates is successfully achieved using the unique photoisomerization transition of the Azo chromophore and the heat-assisted reassembly approach. Chiral induction and chiral-to-achiral communication are further verified via theoretical simulations.

Abstract:<p>Control over main‐chain motion of chiral π‐conjugated polymers can lead to unexpected new functionalities. Here, it is shown that by combining photoswitchable azobenzene units in conjugation with chiral fluorene comonomers and appropriate plasticizers, the polymer organization and chiroptical properties of these alternating copolymers steered by light and its state of polarization can be dynamically controlled. The configuration of the stereogenic centers in the side chains of the fluorene units determines the handedness of the cholesteric organization in thermally annealed films, indicating cooperative behavior. The polymer alignment and helicity of the supramolecular arrangement can be switched by irradiating with linearly and circularly polarized light, respectively. Intriguingly, when switching the handedness of thermally induced cholesteric organizations by illuminating with circularly polarized light that is opposite to the handedness of the cholesteric phases, a nematic‐like intermediate state is observed during helix interconversion. By the sequence of irradiation with left and right circularly polarized light followed by thermal annealing, an asymmetric motion, reminiscent of that seen in molecular motors is observed. These findings suggest that functional conjugated polymers can exhibit emergent properties at mesoscopic scale.</p>

Crystallization-Induced Chirality Transfer in Conformationally Flexible Azahelicene Au(I) Complexes with Circularly Polarized Luminescence Activation

Abstract:Flexible and twisted annulated π-systems exhibit numerous unique and desirable features owing to their ability to display chirality. However, preventing their racemization due to dynamic nature of their chirality remains a challenge. One promising approach to stabilize homochirality in such systems is chirality transfer from a chiral auxiliary to a moiety displaying dynamic chirality. Herein, we introduce a new approach for dynamic chirality stabilization in conformationally flexible azahelicene species via crystallization-induced intermolecular chirality transfer in Au(I) complexes featuring azahelicene (dibenzo[c,g]carbazole and benzo[c]carbazole) and enantio-pure chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with a complementary tailored shape. Crystallization of these azahelicene Au(I) complexes not only suppresses the dynamic chirality of the diben-zocarbazole species, but also stabilizes their homochirality through the intermolecular conjunction between the chiral NHC and dibenzocarbazole ligands. In the Au(I) benzocarbazole complexes, the intermolecular conjunction and chirality transfer in the crystals induces chirality in the initially achiral benzocarbazole ligand. Furthermore, the crystallization of the studied complexes activates their circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, which were suppressed in solution. Importantly, chirality transfer to significant CPL enhancement; the complexes that feature chirality transfer within the crystal structure exhibit luminescence dissymmetry factors 5 to 10 times higher than those of the complexes without chirality transfer.

Abstract:We report a cobalt-catalyzed desymmetrizing isomerization of exo-cyclic alkenes to generate chiral 1-methylcyclohexene derivatives with good yields and enantioselectivities. A novel chiral thiazolinyl iminoquinoline ligand and its cobalt complex were designed and synthesized to control the establishment of tertiary or quaternary carbon centers at a remote position. This protocol is operationally simple, and a model for the stereochemical outcome has been proposed.

Abstract:Facile and efficient construction of the helical structure with diverse and tunable chiral amplification from an achiral polymer is attractive but remains a challenge to develop multiple functional materials. We report herein a macromolecular acid base complex of highly isotactic poly(2-vinylpyridine) (mmmm > 99%), (+)-camphorsulfonic acid, and dodecylbenzensulfonic acid. The asymmetric induction of the chiral additive through the ionic interactions between pyridinium pendants and acid ions drives the polymer backbone to twist in a preferred direction in CHCl3 and its mixture with CH3CN. The sign and intensity of induced circular dichroism rely on the base to acid ratio, the chiral acid content, and the solvent nature. By systematically tuning the solvent composition, four distinct types of "sergeants-and-soldiers" mode chiral amplification are achieved for the first time within a single system owing to the solvent dependent bias of chiral-chiral and chiral achiral ion pairs.

Abstract:The regulation of circularly polarized light (CPL) is crucial to many photonic applications such as stereoscopic displays and asymmetric synthesis. Here, chiroptical cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) film-based circularly polarized reflectors and filters are demonstrated. CPL with high dissymmetry factors and opposite handedness can be achieved using these CNC-based chiroptical devices, and they are used to induce and regulate the helical structures of achiral azobenzene supramolecular polymers. The induced chirality of azobenzene supramolecular polymers depends on the handedness of CPL. In addition, chiral structures of azobenzene polymers can be switched reversibly by changing the Reflected-CPL and the Transmitted-CPL. What is more is that the photoinduction strategy can be successfully applied to azobenzene polymers with different tail groups. This work paves the way for exploiting efficient CPL devices from biomass materials.

Dynamic Circularly Polarized Luminescence with Tunable Handedness and Intensity Enabled by Achiral Dichroic Dyes in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Medium

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are chiral supramolecular systems that self-assemble into a highly regular helical arrangement in a liquid crystal (LC) medium. Such an arrangement is highly beneficial for the chiral enlargement effect on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Dichroic dyes with rod-like molecular structures can exhibit fluorescence anisotropy along both the long and short molecular axes owing to their transition dipole moment (TDM) vectors. In this work, a pair of donor-accepter (D-A) achiral dichroic dyes is prepared, namely, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene derivative (P1, whose TDM vector is parallel to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| > F⊥ ) and anthraquinone derivative (N1, whose TDM vector is perpendicular to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| < F⊥ ). CLCs can be fabricated by doping P1 or N1 together with chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-derived inducers into SLC1717 medium. Dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity is achieved by changing the N1:P1 mass ratio, and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (gem ) value reaches |0.71|. This work describes the first observation of dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity enabled by TDM regulation of achiral dichroic dyes in a CLC medium.

Abstract:Achiral solvents are commonly utilized to induce the self-assembly of chiral molecules. This study demonstrates that achiral solvents can trigger helicity inversion in the assemblies of dansyl amphiphiles and control the excited-state "majority rule" in assemblies composed of pure enantiomers, through variation of the cosolvent ratio. Specifically, enantiomers of dansyl amphiphiles self-assemble into helical structures with opposite handedness in methanol (MeOH) and acetonitrile (MeCN), together with inversed circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. When a mixture of MeOH and MeCN is employed, the achiral cosolvents collectively affect the CPL of the assemblies in a way similar to that of "mixed enantiomers". The dominant cosolvent governs the CPL signal. As the cosolvent composition shifts from pure MeCN to MeOH, the CPL signals undergo a significant inversion and amplification, with two maxima observed at ≈20% MeOH and 20% MeCN. This study deepens the comprehension of how achiral solvents modulate helical nanostructures and their excited-state chiroptical properties.

Abstract:A pair of enantiopure [6]-azairidahelicenes incorporating chirality at the metal center and on the helicenic ligand were synthesized by dynamic kinetic resolution (dkr) of a configurationally labile [4]-helicenic ligand (4-(2-pyridyl)-benzo[g]phenanthrene, L1H) using bis-cyclometalated chiral-at-metal only iridium(III) precursors as chiral inductors. The origin of the observed dkr is attributed to the different conformation and stability of diastereomeric reaction intermediates formed during the cyclometalation process. The isolated enantiomers exhibited circularly polarized phosphorescence (CPP), with |gphos| values of 1.8×10–3.

Abstract:Abstract Chiral noble metal nanoparticles has recently gained great interest due to their potential applications including ultrasensitive chiral recognition and asymmetric synthesis. We anticipate that they could be utilized to induce asymmetric photo-polymerization reactions with high enantioselectivity and reactivity. Here, we report such a system. By employing silver nanoparticles modified with cysteine as the chiral inducer, polydiacetylene (PDA) with high chiral asymmetry was obtained from achiral diacetylene monomers triggered with unpolarized UV light. Furthermore, the helical sense of chirality can be controlled by varying the wavelength of UV irradiation. This enables a feasible and economical method to fabricate programmable 2D patterns of chiral PDA with tailored chirality distributions, such as smooth gradients in chirality and micropatterns with tailorable circularly polarized luminescence. Our finding not only opens a pathway for producing programmable chiroptical micropatterns, but also is highly valuable for deeper understanding of symmetry breaking in enantioselective photochemical reactions.

Abstract:One of the most important factors for the future application of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials is their high dissymmetry factors (gem), and more and more studies are working tirelessly to focus on increasing the gem value. Herein, we chose an achiral liquid crystal polymer (LC-P) and two chiral binaphthyl-based inducers (R/S-3 and R/S-6) with different substitution positions (3,3' positions for R/S-3 and 6,6' positions for R/S-6) to construct chiral co-assemblies and explored their induced amplification CPL behaviors. Interestingly, after the thermal annealing treatment, this kind of chiral co-assembly (R/S-3)0.05-(LC-P)0.95 can emit a superior CPL signal (|gem| = 0.31 and λem = 424 nm), which achieves about 13-fold signal amplification in the spin-coated film, compared to (R/S-6)0.1-(LC-P)0.9 (|gem| = 0.023 and λem = 424 nm). This is because (R/S-3)0.05-(LC-P)0.95 could further co-assemble to form a more ordered arrangement LC state and generate regular helix nanofibers than that of (R/S-6)0.1-(LC-P)0.9. This work provides an efficient method for synthesizing high-quality CPL-active materials through the strategic manipulation of the structure of chiral binaphthyl-based inducers in chiral co-assembled LCP systems.

Abstract:In this paper, planar chiral helicenes based on [2.2]paracyclophane PCPH5 acted as both chiral inducers and energy donors to construct the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active ternary cholesteric liquid crystals (T-N*-LCs) in a commercial nematic liquid crystal (SLC1717, N-LCs) medium. Induced red CPL emission based on the energy acceptor of the achiral polymer DTBTF8 could be successfully promoted by the intermolecular Förster resonance energy transfer mechanism. The resulting T-N*-LCs can generate intensive CPL signals with glum up to +0.70/-0.67. Interestingly, this kind of "on-off" CPL switching of T-N*-LCs can be manipulated by the applied direct current electric field.
A Single-Enantiomer Emitter Enabled Superstructural Helix Inversion for Upconverting and Downshifting Luminescence with Bidirectional Circular Polarization

Abstract:The helical twisting tendency of liquid crystals (LCs) is generally governed by the inherent configuration of the chiral emitter. Here, we introduce the multistage inversion of supramolecular chirality as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) by manipulating the ratio of single enantiomeric emitters (R-PCP) to LC monomers (5CB). Increasing the content of R-PCP from 1 wt % to 3 wt % inverted the helix of LCs from left-handed to right-handed, accompanying a CPL sign changed from positive to negative. The biaxiality of chiral emitters, as well as the steric effect of chiral-chiral and chiral-achiral interaction, were identified as the reasons for helical sense inversion. Due to the strong helical twisting power, 4 wt % R-PCP drove the photonic band gap (PBG) of chiral LCs to match up with their emission range, leading to an inversion of the CPL again with a high dissymmetry factor (≈1.2). Directly adjusting the PBG using chiral emitters is seldom achieved in cholesteric LCs. On this basis, an achiral sensitizer PtTPBP was assembled into the helical superstructure. The generation of triplet-triplet annihilation-induced upconverted CPL from R-PCP and the downshifting CPL from PtTPBP with opposite rotation was achieved in a single chiral LC system by tuning the position of the PBG.

Abstract:It is challenging to precisely regulate the chirality transmission of metal-organic supramolecular polymers (MOSPs) due to a poor understanding of nucleation pathways during the highly dynamic and complex self-assembly process. This work reports dynamic circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) switching of pyridine Schiff-base cholesterol (2-PMPCC) and ZnCl2-based MOSPs with chirality inversion and CPL switching through the competition of solvent-assisted nucleation and thermal nucleation. In p-xylene, the metal complex of 2-PMPCC center dot ZnCl2 conducted solvent-assisted nucleation and assembled into metastable twisted nanoribbons of Agg I with right-handed CPL at 490 nm, which further reverted into thermodynamic Agg II with left-handed CPL at 490 nm. In contrast, the complex assembled into nanosheet-like Agg III with right-handed CPL at 460 nm in ethanol. Based on the competition pathways of solvent-assisted nucleation and thermal nucleation, significant dynamic morphology and CPL switching were achieved by tuning temperature in the cosolvents p-xylene and ethanol. This work revealed the chirality transfer with CPL switching and dynamic morphology transformation regulated by solvent-dependent nucleation pathways of MOSPs, providing an efficient approach to precisely control the supramolecular chirality of MOSPs with tunable CPL performances for the design of chiroptical materials.
