Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.

Abstract:Chiral supramolecular assembly can provide a powerful strategy for developing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials by forming helices or superhelices into single or multiple components. Herein, we chose three achiral liquid crystal polymers (LC-P1/P2/P3) and chiral binaphthyl-based inducers (R/S-M) with anchored dihedral angles to construct chiral co-assemblies and explore the induced CPL behavior from pyrenyl (Py) emitters in achiral LC polymers through the regulation of helical nanofibers during the supramolecular co-assembly process. Most interestingly, chiral co-assembly (R/S-M)0.1-(P3)0.9 emitted an inverted blue-colored CPL signal during thermal annealing treatment at the glass transition temperature due to the flexible main chain of the LC polymer (LC-P3). The strongest blue-colored CPL emission for the (R/S-M)0.1-(P3)0.9 spin-coated film (λem = 455 nm, |gem| = 6.47 × 10-2, ΦF = 48.5%) could be detected by using thermal annealing treatment at 105 °C.

Abstract:The CPL films are prepared based on the flexible co‐assembly of exogenous chiral dopants, achiral liquid crystal polymers, and fluorescent molecules. The controllable CPL arose from the common effects of emissive dye with conformational chirality and selective Bragg reflection of chiral liquid crystal polymers. The presence of repeated nematic phases contributes to adjusting the luminescence dissymmetry factors of films. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are highly demanded due to their great potential in optoelectronic and chiroptical elements. However, the preparation of CPL films with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) remains a formidable task, which impedes their practical application in film‐based devices. Herein, a facile strategy to prepare solid CPL film with a high glum through exogenous chiral induction and amplification of liquid crystal polymers is proposed. Amplification and reversion of the CPL appear when the films are annealed at the chiral nematic liquid crystalline temperature and the maximal glum up to 0.30 due to the enhancement of selective reflection. Thermal annealing treatment at different liquid crystalline states facilitates the formation of the chiral liquid phase and adjusts the circularly polarized emission. This work not only provides a straightforward and versatile platform to construct organic films capable of exhibiting strong circularly polarized emission but also is helpful in understanding the exact mechanism for the liquid crystal enhancement of CPL performance.

Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence Promoted by AIE‐active Chiral Co‐assemblies in Liquid Crystal Polymer Films

Abstract:Recently, extensive works have focused on increasing the dissymmetry factors (glum) of various circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, which is one of the most important factors for future applications of CPL. Herein, we designed a chiral co‐assembled liquid crystal polymer (LCP) PTZ@R/S‐PB2, which was prepared by chiral binary co‐polymer (R/S‐PB2) doped with achiral phenothiazine derivation dye (PTZ). For comparison, ternary co‐polymerized LCP (R/S‐PT) was synthesized by co‐polymerizing with mesogenic monomer, chiral monomer and emissive monomer. Both PTZ@R/S‐PB2 and R/S‐PT showed aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) properties. Interestingly, the CPL signals of both PTZ@R/S‐PB2 and R/S‐PT were reversed and amplified after thermal annealing treatment. The |glum| values of the co‐assembled PTZ@R/S‐PB2 were up to 0.13 at a 32 nm thickness, which was 5.4 times that of R/S‐PT (|glum| = 0.024). This is due to PTZ@R/S‐PB2 could form more orderly chiral co‐assembly structures. Noticeably, increasing the LCP film thickness could further improve the glum value, and the maximum glum of PTZ@R/S‐PB2 could be enhanced to 0.91 at a 220 nm thickness.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted much interest due to its potential applications on chiral photonic techniques and optoelectronic materials science. As known, dissymmetry factor (g(em)) of CPL is one essential factor for evaluating the features of CPL-active materials. Much attention has focused on how to increase the g(em) value, which is one of the most important issues for CPL practical applications. Recently, more and more works have demonstrated that chiral supramolecular could provide the significant strategy to improve the g(em) value through the orderly helical superstructure of chiral building blocks. Normally, this kind of chiral supramolecular assembly process can be accompanied by chirality transfer and induction mechanism, which can promote the amplification effect on the induced CPL of achiral dyes. In this review, we fully summarized recent advances on the induced CPL-active materials of chiral supramolecular co-assemblies, their applications in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) and current challenges.

Abstract:With the rapid development on 3D printing technology, more and more works have been devoted to 3D display. 3D display will really come true by using circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active materials with both high quantum yield and dissymmetry factor (gem ) in organic light-emitting diode or liquid crystals (LCs). But so far most of these CPL materials cannot meet the real application requirement because of the low gem values in the range of 10-5 -10-2 . In this paper, ternary chiral emissive LCs (P-N*-LCs) is designed by doping chiral binaphthyl-based enantiomers as chiral dopant (Guest 1) and achiral conjugated polymer as induced CPL emitter (Guest 2) into nematic liquid crystal (N-LCs) Host 5CB. Both Guest 1 and Guest 2 show excellent compatibility with Host 5CB. The obtained ternary P-N*-LCs can emit strong-induced CPL signal with gem up to 1.12 and ФFL up to 66.1%. This work first develops a new strategy for the smart design of excellent CPL materials from versatile achiral conjugation fluorescence polymers.
Tunable AI-CPL behavior by regulation of microstructure of AIE-active isomers through chiral emissive liquid crystals

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission materials with high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g(lum)) and high quantum yield (QY) are currently in urgent demand for real applications. Three D-A type enantiomers (R-/S-1, 2 and 3) were designed and synthesized that combine a phenanthro [9,10-d]imidazole (PIP) unit to a naphthalimide (NI) at the p-, m-, o-positions. These AIE-active enantiomers were chosen as CPL emitters doped into nematic liquid crystals (E7, N-LCs) to form three chiral nematic liquid crystals (N*-LCs-1, 2 and 3). Interestingly, N*-LCs-1 shows higher g(lum) (+0.91/-0.98) and QY (18.5%) than N*-LCs-2 (g(lum) = +0.86/-0.89, QY = 1.3%) and N*-LCs-3 (g(lum) = +0.010/-0.013, QY = 4.7%) due to effective chirality transfer and intramolecular electronic coupling from microstructure change of AIE-active isomers. This paper revealed that AI-CD and AI-CPL enhancement behavior of N*-LCs could be regulated not only by the chirality transfer via supramolecular self-assembly but also by the electronic coupling strength through microstructure change of AIE-active isomers of donor units in the chiral emitters. This work can provide a new strategy for the development of CPL LCs materials.
Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence Performance by a Double π-Helix and Heteroannulation

Abstract:Design challenges in the development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are focused on balancing the luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL) by regulating the electric (μ) and magnetic (m) transition dipole moment vectors. Aiming at designing efficient CPL emitters and clarifying the chiroptical variation mechanism, herein, we present a double π-helix based on a cyclooctatetraene-embedded perylene diimide dimer that combines chirality with molecular entanglement and very high barriers for racemization. Through finely regulating the magnitudes of μ and m, the maximal dissymmetry factors |gabs| and |glum| can be boosted to 0.035 and 0.030, respectively, as revealed by circular dichroism (CD) and CPL spectra. The results indicate a 3-fold improvement of g values and a modulated ΦPL from 1a, 4, to 5 by nitrogen heteroannulation at the bay region. The CPL brightness (BCPL) of 5 reaches a recorded value of up to 573.4 M-1 cm-1, among the highest values of chiral small molecules reported so far. This work has provided a comprehensive insight into a new class of chiral materials with high CPL activities, further laying molecular fundamentals for chiral optoelectronics.

Ultrastrong Circularly Polarized Luminescence Triggered by the Synergistic Effect of Chiral Coassembly and Selective Reflective Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Film

Abstract:Enhancing the dissymmetry factor (g(lum)) is crucial for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) applications. Herein, we present an innovative strategy achieving an ultrastrong |g(lum)| of 1.73. This is accomplished through the synergistic effect of coassembly of the CPL-emitting ternary liquid crystal (T-N*-LC, |g(lum)| = 0.47) and the selective reflection (lambda = 590 nm) of the polymer cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) within a composite system. Unlike the mismatched chirality combination (|g(lum)| = 1.42, Delta FL = 57%), the matched combination demonstrates an ultrastrong CPL signal with a |g(lum)| of 1.73 and a low Delta FL of 50% when the CPL direction of the T-N*-LC agrees with the CLC film's chirality. Furthermore, we alter the matching degree of the composite system by applying a direct-current (DC) electric field to realize the CPL switch. This study paves the way for developing outstanding CPL-active display materials through synergistic amplification of g(lum).

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous twisted‐stacking structure is proposed, which endows strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) amplification over traditional homogeneous structures, leading to an exceptionally high figure of merit up to 0.11. Interestingly, their CPL performance can be precisely manipulated since the phase retardation of the anisotropic poly (vinyl alcohol) layer can be controlled by uniaxial stretching. Chiroptical materials with strong and switchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties have gained considerable interest due to their feasible applications in optoelectronic devices, sensing, and information encryption. However, in most cases, their luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and figure of merit (FOM) values remain very low. Herein, a novel heterogeneous twisted‐stacking structure is proposed, which endows with strong CPL amplification (a maximum of ≈15‐fold enhancement) over traditional homogeneous structures and a high FOM value up to 0.11. Interestingly, their CPL performance (including the sign, magnitude, and spectral position) and the FOM values can be precisely manipulated or even inversed by simply uniaxial stretching, since the phase retardation of the anisotropic poly (vinyl alcohol) layer can be controlled. Moreover, by combining with the viologen gel electrochromic system, the in situ voltage‐driven switching and patterning of the CPL signal can be successfully achieved, with low operation voltage and good cycling stability. This study provides a creative strategy for fabricating strong and electrical switchable CPL‐active materials, which promise new opportunities in miniaturized smart electrochiroptical devices for future information technology.

Dynamic Circularly Polarized Luminescence with Tunable Handedness and Intensity Enabled by Achiral Dichroic Dyes in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Medium

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are chiral supramolecular systems that self-assemble into a highly regular helical arrangement in a liquid crystal (LC) medium. Such an arrangement is highly beneficial for the chiral enlargement effect on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Dichroic dyes with rod-like molecular structures can exhibit fluorescence anisotropy along both the long and short molecular axes owing to their transition dipole moment (TDM) vectors. In this work, a pair of donor-accepter (D-A) achiral dichroic dyes is prepared, namely, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene derivative (P1, whose TDM vector is parallel to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| > F⊥ ) and anthraquinone derivative (N1, whose TDM vector is perpendicular to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| < F⊥ ). CLCs can be fabricated by doping P1 or N1 together with chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-derived inducers into SLC1717 medium. Dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity is achieved by changing the N1:P1 mass ratio, and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (gem ) value reaches |0.71|. This work describes the first observation of dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity enabled by TDM regulation of achiral dichroic dyes in a CLC medium.
AlEt3-Catalyzed Synthesis of Circularly Polarized Luminescence Active Aggregation-Induced Emission Helical Polyisocyandies

Abstract:The facile construction of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials through the clever combination of chirality and fluorescence is of great significance. Herein, we provide a simple and efficient synthesis of CPL-active aggregation-induced emission (AIE) helical polyisocyanides through asymmetric polymerization of commonly used chiral aryl isocyanide monomers featuring a D- or L-mentyl-ester pendant group (D/L-IMCIs) catalzyed by a novel AlEt3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] binary catalytic system. The typical fluorophore-free chiral D/L-IMCI monomers, silent in circular dichroism (CD), exhibit intriguing AIE properties. After undergoing asymmetric-induced polymerization with remarkable efficiency, the synthesized poly(D/L-IMCI)s have chiral helical structures, manifesting both CD and AIE characteristics. Based on the "matching rule" of the fluorescent moieties and chiral helical polyisocyandies, these poly(D/L-IMCI)s display distinct CPL signals in both aggregated state and film state, mirroring each other across the 400−600 nm range in THF, with a luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum|) values around 7.6–7.8 × 10–4 in THF. Moreover, the incorporation of different proportion of a achiral aryl isocyanide bearing an azobenzene pendant (IPPD) into the poly(D/L-IMCI)s through helix-sense-selective copolymerization allows for precise control over the chiroptical properties of the synthesized AIE helical poly(D/L-IMCI-ran-IPPD)s. The nonlinear relationship between the intensity of CD or CPL signals and the D/L-IMCI contents of the synthetic poly(D/L-IMCI-ran-IPPD)s clearly describes strong chiral amplification effects, achieving a maximum |glum| value exceeding 1.0 × 10-3 in THF, which is superior to those of poly(D/L-IMCI)s. These results demonstrate that the helical (co)polyisocyanide's chirality confers a chiral environment, which in turn effectively induces chirality within both the excited and ground states. This strategy provides new perspectives for the straightforward and simple construction of novel CPL-active AIE polymers through asymmetric polymerization of commonly used functional monomers.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) plays a pivotal role in cutting-edge display and information technologies. Currently achieving precise color control and dynamic signal regulation in CPL still remains challenging due to the elusory relationship between fluorescence and chirality. Inspired by the natural mechanisms governing color formation and chiral interaction, we proposed an addition-subtraction principle theory to address this issue. Three fluorene-based polymers synthesized by Suzuki polycondensation with different electron-deficient monomers exhibit similar structures and UV-vis absorption, but distinct fluorescence emissions due to intramolecular charge transfer. Based on this, precise-color CPL-active films are obtained through quantitative supramolecular co-assembly directed by addition principle. Particularly, an ideal white-emitting CPL film (CIE coordinates: (0.33, 0.33)) is facilely fabricated with a high quantum yield of 80.8% and a dissymmetry factor (glum) of 1.4 × 10−2. Structural analysis reveals that the ordered stacking orientation favors higher glum. Furthermore, to address the dynamically regulated challenge, the comparable subtraction principle is proposed, involving a contactless chiral communication between excited and ground states. The representative system consisting of as-prepared fluorene-based polymers and chirality-selective absorption azobenzene (Azo)-containing polymers is constructed, achieving CPL weakening, reversal, and enhancement. Finally, a switchable quick response code is realized based on trans-cis isomerization of Azo moiety.

Abstract:Recently, much attention has been paid to circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) from achiral fluorophores through an intermolecular chirality induction mechanism. In this paper, we developed a new strategy for CP-OLEDs of achiral fluorophores induced by helical co-assembly between chiral polymers and an achiral fluorophore. In this paper, we synthesized three chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-based polymers (R/S-P1, R/S-P2 and R/S-P3) with different side chain alkyl groups (n-C4H9; n-C6H13; n-C8H17), which can act as chirality inducers and form chiral co-assemblies with an achiral pyrenyl fluorophore (Bpy). At a 50% doping weight ratio of R/S-P2 inducer with Bpy, this kind of chiral co-assembly (R/S-P2-Bpy) can exhibit helical nano fibers and emit a strong deep blue CPL signal (lambda(em) = 420 nm, dissymmetry factor vertical bar g(em)vertical bar = 0.042) in spin-coated films after annealing (120 degrees C). Moreover, the stable CP-OLEDs using R/S-P2-Bpy as the device emitting layer (EML) can emit strong CP-EL with an electroluminescence dissymmetry factor vertical bar g(EL)vertical bar of up to 0.021.

Abstract:Chiral chromophores and their ordered assemblies are intriguing for yielding circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and exploring intrinsic structure–light emission relationships. With the extensively studied chiral organic molecules and inorganic nanoparticle assemblies for the amplified CPL, the assemblies of copper halide hybrid clusters have attracted intensive attention due to their potential efficient CPL. Here, we report robust chiral phosphine–copper iodide hybrid clusters and their layered assemblies in crystalline states for amplified CPL. We reveal that the intermolecular interactions endow the clusters with the capability of assembling into chiral crystalline CPL materials, including hexagonal platelet-shaped microcrystals (glum ≈ 9.5 × 10–3) and highly oriented crystalline films (glum ≈ 5 × 10–3). Chiral Co‐assembly Based on a Stimuli‐Responsive Polymer towards Amplified Full‐Color Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials have been attaching wide attention in the field of optical information storage and encryption, while still facing the challenge of the realization of high luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum). This work presents a pair of stimuli-responsive chiral co-assemblies P7R3 and P7S3 by combining polymer PFIQ containing iso-quinoline units with chiral inducers. The obtained chiral co-assemblies can reversibly undergo significant modification in CPL behavior under trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) fumigation and annealing treatment, with the |glum| values exhibiting a reversible shift between 0.2 and 0.3. Moreover, the chiral co-assemblies before TFA fumigating can effectively induce achiral emitters to generate intense full-color CPL signals through CPL energy transfer (CPL-ET), with the corresponding |glum| values larger than 0.2. Moreover, information encryption and decryption as well as a multi-level logic gates application are achieved by leveraging the reversible stimuli-responsive CPL activity of the chiral co-assembly. This work provides a new perspective for the construction of stimuli-responsive chiral luminescent materials with large |glum| values and the activation of CPL behavior in achiral emitters.

Abstract:Chiroptical functional materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties have drawn increasing interest for their potential applications in optoelectronics and chiral sensing. However, the development of CPL materials with both large luminescence dissymmetry (g lum) factors and high quantum yields (Φ F) in solid state is still a challenging task. In this work, organic–inorganic hybrid silica films have been prepared by the in-situ polycondensation of a cholesteric liquid-crystalline organosilane with the addition of a chiral dopant and an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative under an acidic condition. The resulting films emit bright CPL with the absolute g lum values about 0.15, which were mainly caused by the long-range ordered supramolecular helical structure. It is found that the handedness of the CPL was dominated by the selective reflection of the cholesteric liquid crystal films.

Abstract:It is noteworthy that cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) platforms have been witnessed in high-performance circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) behaviors through the highly organized chiral co-assembled arrangement of achiral dyes. However, most CPL-active design strategies are closely relative to the helix co-assembly structure of CLC rather than achiral dyes. Herein, we developed an intriguing regulation strategy for CPL-active CLC materials. They were regulated using the orientational order parameter (SF) of achiral dichroic dyes as an incisive probe for the order arrangement degree of achiral dyes in CLC media. The I-shaped phenothiazine derivative PHECN dye (SF=0.30) emitted a strong CPL signal (|glum|=0.47). In contrast, the T-shaped derivative (PHEBen) dye (SF=0.09) showed a weak circular polarization level (|glum|=0.07) at similar CLC textures. Most interestingly, this kind of dichroic PHECN dye with a higher SF could greatly improve the contrast ratio of CPL (Delta glum=0.47) and emission intensity (Delta FL=46.0 %) at direct-current electric field compared with the T-shaped PHEBen (Delta glum=0.07 and Delta FL=1.0 %) in CLC. This work demonstrates that an induced CPL emission can be mediated using achiral dichroic dye, which will open a new avenue for developing excellent CPL-active display materials. A strategy was developed for regulating circularly polarized luminescence performance by increasing the order parameter value of achiral dichroic dye in cholesteric liquid crystal media without changing the helical superstructure. Additionally, the circularly polarized luminescence and fluorescence intensity response (contrast ratio) was also improved as the order parameter value increased under the DC electric field. Efficient encryption could be achieved by modulating the structure of achiral dichroic dyes in cholesteric liquid crystals.+image
