Abstract:Supramolecular chirality has attracted a great deal of attention as a platform for both fundamental study and chirality amplification in various research fields. Compared with the “sergeants‐and‐soldiers” principle, the “majority‐rules” principle, which affects chirality amplification in supramolecular systems, is rarely reported for nano/microstructures. Here, chiral tetrachloro‐substituted perylene diimides are synthesized that self‐assemble into chiral supramolecules with different degrees of enantiomeric excess (ee). Interestingly, it is found that quasi‐2D crystals are gradually transferred to 1D nanowires (NWs) with ee from 100% to 0%. In the racemic system, chiral self‐discrimination is observed due to the greater thermodynamic stability of heterochiral crystals than the homochiral counterparts, judging from the theoretical studies. Circular dichroism analysis indicates that the self‐assembled system with different ee values shows different peaks due to their unique molecular ordering for supramolecular exciton coupling. On measurement in optoelectronic devices, racemic 1D NWs show better charge transport ability than enantiomeric quasi‐2D crystals. These results provide guidelines for tuning the supramolecular chirality and optoelectronic performance of self‐assembled systems via the “majority‐rules” principle.
Solvent-Modulated Chiral Self-Assembly: Selective Formation of Helical Nanotubes, Nanotwists, and Energy Transfer

Abstract:As the medium for self-assembly processes, solvents strongly influence the supramolecular assemblies via specific solute-solvent interactions, which may result in effective modulation of properties, self-assembled nanostructures, and functions through varying the solvent. Here, two kinds of pyridine-cyanostilbene functionalized chiral amphiphiles (l/d-PyPhG and l-PyG) were designed, and their self-assembly behaviors in different solvents were investigated. It was found that both amphiphiles formed gels in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and self-assembled into right-handed nanotwists, while they formed suspensions in ethanol consisting of left-handed nanotubes. Although the molecular chirality in the compounds remained unchanged in the two solvents, the nanoassemblies showed opposite handedness at the nanoscale together with opposite circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Furthermore, when the amphiphiles were co-assembled with an achiral dye, it was found that efficient energy transfer took place in the systems composed of nanotubes rather than those composed of nanotwists. Therefore, by assembling molecules with the same molecular chirality in different solvents, a selective formation of helical nanotubes or nanotwists and the regulation of handedness as well as energy transfer efficiency were achieved.

Abstract:The chemokine system has a critical role in mammalian immunity, but the evolutionary history of chemokines and chemokine receptors are ill-defined. We used comparative whole genome analysis of fruit fly, sea urchin, sea squirt, pufferfish, zebrafish, frog, and chicken to identify chemokines and chemokine receptors in each species. We report 127 chemokine and 70 chemokine receptor genes in the 7 species, with zebrafish having the most chemokines, 63, and chemokine receptors, 24. Fruit fly, sea urchin, and sea squirt have no identifiable chemokines or chemokine receptors. This study represents the most comprehensive analysis of the chemokine system to date and the only complete characterization of chemokine systems outside of mouse and human. We establish a clear evolutionary model of the chemokine system and trace the origin of the chemokine system to ∼650 million years ago, identifying critical steps in their evolution and demonstrating a more extensive chemokine system in fish than previously thought.

Abstract:Abstract: Plasma osmolality and the levels of water, taurine, and total amino nitrogen (detected as ninhydrin‐positive substances) have been measured in the cerebral cortices of nonpregnant and 19‐day pregnant Wistar rats. Plasma osmolality fell by 11 mosmol/kg during pregnancy. Brain water content remained unaltered, but levels of taurine and ninhydrin‐positive substances fell by 48.5 and 21.9%, respectively. It is suggested that one way in which brain cells are prevented from swelling during the mild hypoosmolality of pregnancy is through loss of cellular amino nitrogen, particularly taurine.

Abstract:Azobenzene (Azo) liquid-crystalline polymers are intriguing due to their unique photo-induced isomerization and supramolecular chirality. However, clarification on multicomponent chiral induction towards Azo polymers remains ambiguous and challenging. Herein, chiral solvents and amines were employed to control the chiroptical activity of achiral Azo polymers. Methyl L-/D-lactate was added as the poor solvent and chiral inducer to achieve the first chiral induction in Azo aggregates. Chiral amines were utilized for the second chiral induction based on the acid-base interactions between the carboxyl groups of polymers and amines. The chiral enhancement and inversion of Azo units could be observed through the synergistic or antagonistic effect between solvents and amines. The impacts of solvent, chemical structures, feed ratio, enantiomeric excess, and temperature on supramolecular chirality were systematically studied. Furthermore, this system displayed the chiroptical switching property and chiral recovery under reversible irradiation.

Abstract:Host-guest interactions are widely employed in constructing responsive materials, although less is known to manipulate the chiral property of materials using such host-guest dynamics. With the supramolecular self-assembly based on beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) and alkyl amines (CH3(CH2)(n-1)NH2), we report that faster host-guest dynamics induces a dipole located above the cavity of beta-CD, whereas slower dynamics create in-cavity dipole. These two scenarios correspond to negative and positive chiral signals, respectively. Considering that a larger fraction of amines facilitates faster exchange between the threaded and unthreaded amines, the chiral signal for the right-handed helical ribbons can be manipulated simply by alternatively increasing the fraction of amines and beta-CD. Excitingly, enzyme responsive supramolecular chirality is obtained as a result of shifting the molar ratio by enzyme triggered hydrolysis of beta-CD. We expect that this strategy may open up an area of rationally designed chiral supramolecular materials based on host-guest chemistry.

Abstract:In the context of sustainable development, research regarding chirality has aroused enormous attention. Concurrently, chiral self-assembly is one of the most important subjects in supramolecular research, which can broaden the applications of chiral materials. This study focuses on the morphology control of amphiphilic rod-coil molecules composed of the rigid hexaphenyl unit and flexible oligoethylene and butoxy groups containing lateral methyl groups, carried out using an enantioseparation application. The methyl side chain being located on different blocks influences the driving force through steric hindrance, which determines the direction and degree of tilted packing during the π-π stacking of the self-assembly process. Interestingly, the amphiphilic rod-coil molecules aggregated into long helical nano-fibers, which further hierarchically aggregated into nano-sheets or nano-tubes upon increasing the concentration of the THF/H<sub>2</sub>O solution. In particular, the hierarchical-chiral assembly effectively amplified the chirality and was validated by the strong Cotton signals; playing a vital role in the enantioselective nucleophilic substitution reaction. These results provide new insights into the applications of chiral self-assemblies and soft chiral materials.

Abstract:Understanding the regulatory mechanism of self-assembly processes is a necessity to modulate nanos-tructures and their properties.Herein,we have studied the mechanism of self-assembly in the C3 sym-metric 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylic amino acid methyl ester enantiomers(TPE)in a mixed solvent system consisting of methanol and water.The resultant chiral structure was used for chiral recognition.The formation of chiral structures from the synergistic effect of multiple noncovalent interaction forces was confirmed by various techniques.Molecular dynamics simulations were used to characterize the time evolution of TPE structure and properties in solution.The theoretical results were consistent with the ex-perimental results.Furthermore,the chiral structure assembled by the building blocks of TPE molecules was highly stereoselective for diamine compounds.

Abstract:The title compound, C26H21N3O3, is a chemically symmetrical molecule with one methyl group and three (4-cyanophenoxy)methyl groups bonded to a tetracoordinate C atom. It crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group P (1) over bar. In the crystal structure, there are many non-covalent interactions, including O ... N short contacts and antiparallel dipole-dipole interactions. The tetracoordinate C atom of the molecule exhibits central chirality, while the three attached groups exhibit different axial chirality. The enantiomers form homochiral monolayers through enantioselective self-assembly, and the monolayers are packed in the formation of a superlattice based on alternating the two enantiomeric states. The physical image of molecular chirality as well as the concept of a superlattice with respect to chirality may provide a new insight into such a racemic crystal, which is very common in crystallography.

Abstract:Probing the supramolecular chirality of assemblies and controlling their handedness are closely related to the origin of chirality at the supramolecular level and the development of smart materials with desired handedness. However, it remains unclear how achiral residues covalently bonded to chiral amino acids can function in the chirality inversion of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we report macroscopic chirality and dynamic manipulation of chiroptical activity of hydrogels self-assembled from phenylalanine derivatives, together with the inversion of their handedness achieved solely by exchanging achiral substituents between oligo(ethylene glycol) and carboxylic acid groups. This helicity inversion is mainly induced by distinct stacking mode of the self-assembled building blocks, as collectively confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, circular dichroism, crystallography, and molecular dynamics calculations. Through this straightforward approach, we were able to invert the handedness of helical assemblies by merely exchanging achiral substituents at the terminal of chiral gelators. This work not only presents a feasible strategy to achieve the handedness inversion of helical nanostructures for better understanding of chiral self-assembly process in supramolecular chemistry but also facilities the development of smart materials with controllable handedness in materials science.

Abstract:Self-assembly is one of the most important issues of fabricating materials with precise chiral nanostructures. Herein, we constructed a chiral assembly system from amphiphiles containing hydrophobic/hydrophilic chiral coils bonded to hexabiphenyl, exhibiting controllable enantioselectivity over various aggregation behaviors. The chiral coils aroused various steric hindrances affecting intrinsic stacking tendency and compactness, leading to different aggregating behaviors, as concluded from the self-assembly investigation. The strong π-π stacking interaction between the long hexabiphenyl groups gave rise to a relatively compact arrangement in the aqueous solution, whereas the methyl side groups on the coil segments raised steric hindrance at the rigid-flexible interface, resulting in loose stacking and formation of nanostructures with a larger curvature. Compared with the achiral molecule 1 that formed micron-sized large sheets, molecules 2-4 containing chiral coils aggregated into nanodishes, which looked exactly like mosquito-repellent incense, to overcome surface tension. The helical structures effectively amplified chirality and exhibited strong circular dichroism (CD) signals, which indicate enantioselectivity. In addition, the relatively loose packing behavior permitted their co-assembly with a dye and aided efficient energy transfer, providing a foundation for the chiral application of supramolecules. Thus, by introducing a simple methyl side group in amphiphilic molecules, asymmetric synthesis and energy transfer efficiency can be realized.
Competitive Chiral Induction in a 2D Molecular Assembly: Intrinsic Chirality Versus Coadsorber-Induced Chirality

Abstract:Noncovalently introducing stereogenic information is a promising approach to embed chirality in achiral molecular systems. However, the interplay of the noncovalently introduced chirality with the intrinsic chirality of molecules or molecular aggregations has rarely been addressed. We report a competitive chiral expression of the noncovalent interaction-mediated chirality induction and the intrinsic stereogenic center-controlled chirality induction in a two-dimensional (2D) molecular assembly at the liquid/solid interface. Two enantiomorphous honeycomb networks are formed by the coassembly of an achiral 5-(benzyloxy) isophthalic acid (BIC) derivative and 1-octanol at the liquid/solid interface. The preferential formation of the globally homochiral assembly can be achieved either by using the chiral analog of 1-octanol, (S)-6-methyl-1-octanol, as a chiral coadsorber to induce chirality to the BIC assembly via noncovalent hydrogen bonding or by covalently linking a chiral center in the side chain of BIC. Both the chiral coadsorber and the intrinsically chiral BIC derivative can act as a chiral seeds to induce a preferred handedness in the assembly of the achiral BIC derivatives. Furthermore, the noncovalent interaction-mediated chirality induction can restrain or even overrule the manifestation of the intrinsic chirality of the BIC molecule and dominate the handedness of the 2D molecular coassembly. This study provides insight into the interplay of intrinsically chiral centers and external chiral coadsorbers in the chiral induction, transfer, and amplification processes of 2D molecular assembly.

Abstract:Chirality, with its intrinsic symmetry-breaking feature, is frequently utilized in the creation of acentric crystalline functional materials that exhibit intriguing optoelectronic properties. On the other hand, the development of chiral crystals from achiral molecules offers a solution that bypasses the need for enantiopure motifs, presenting a promising alternative and thereby expanding the possibilities of the self-assembly toolkit. Nevertheless, the rational design of achiral molecules that prefer spontaneous symmetry breaking during crystallization has so far been obscure. In this study, we present a series of six achiral molecules, demonstrating that when these conformationally flexible molecules adopt a cis-conformation and engage in multiple non-covalent interactions along a helical path, they collectively self-assemble into chiral superstructures consisting of single-handed supramolecular columns. When these homochiral supramolecular columns align in parallel, they form polar crystals that exhibit intense luminescence upon grinding or scraping. We therefore demonstrate our molecular design strategy could significantly increase the likelihood of symmetry breaking in achiral molecular synthons during self-assembly, offering a facile access to novel chiral crystalline materials with unique optoelectronic properties.

Macroscopic Helical Assembly of One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers: Helicity Inversion Triggered by Solvent Isomerism.

Abstract:Assembling macroscopic helices with controllable chirality and understanding their formation mechanism are highly desirable but challenging tasks for artificial systems, especially coordination polymers. Here, we utilize solvents as an effective tool to induce the formation of macroscopic helices of chiral coordination polymers (CPs) and manipulate their helical sense. We chose the Ni/R-,S-BrpempH(2) system with a one-dimensional tubular structure, where R-,S-BrpempH(2) stands for R-,S-(1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylaminomethylphosphonic acid). The morphology of the self-assemblies can be controlled by varying the cosolvent in water, resulting in the formation of twisted ribbons of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)H2O (R-,S-2T) in pure H2O; needle-like crystals of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)(2)1/3CH(3)CN (R-,S-1C) in 20 vol % CH3CN/H2O; nanofibers of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)H2O (R-,S-3F) in 20-40 vol % methanol/H2O or ethanol/H2O; and superhelices of R-,S-Ni(Brpemp)(H2O)H2O (R-,S-4H or 5H) in 40 vol % propanol/H2O. Interestingly, the helicity of the superhelix can be controlled by using a propanol isomer in water. For the Ni/R-BrpempH(2) system, a left-handed superhelix of R-4H(M) was obtained in 40 vol % NPA/H2O, while a right-handed superhelix of R-5H(P) was isolated in 40 vol % IPA/H2O. These results were rationalized by theoretical calculations. Adsorption studies revealed the chiral recognition behavior of these compounds. This work may contribute to the development of chiral CPs with a macroscopic helical morphology and interesting functionalities.

Abstract:In general, a single enantiomer can induce a foldamer into a preferred‐handed helix, while another condition is required for the helical inversion. In this work, it is found that the helix induction and subsequent inversion of the poly(m‐phenylene diethynylene)‐based foldamer bearing aza‐18‐crown‐6 pendants (Poly‐1) can be realized by increasing the concentration of sterically hindered L‐amino acid perchlorate salts. When the amount of chiral enantiomers is small, one enantiomer tends to complex with two non‐adjacent aza‐18‐crown‐6 rings via three N+‐H···O hydrogen bonds in a sandwich mode. Notably, the transition dipole moment is perpendicular to aza‐18‐crown‐6 ring, so that the induced helical chirality in Poly‐1 main chain is opposite to the chirality of enantiomers. When the amount of chiral enantiomers is large enough, each aza‐18‐crown‐6 is occupied by one enantiomer, which causes the transition dipole moment in a parallel direction to aza‐18‐crown‐6 ring. In this case, the increased steric hindrance can facilitate the inversion of screw sense of Poly‐1 main chain, which is directed by chiral center of enantiomers. As a result, a helix inversion has been achieved successfully. This work not only provides a novel strategy for regulating the two‐stage folded helical conformations by the single enantiomers, but opens a window to develop chiral recognition materials. Globally Homochiral Assembly of Two-Dimensional Molecular Networks Triggered by Co-Absorbers

Abstract:Understanding the chirality induction and amplification processes, and the construction of globally homochiral surfaces, represent essential challenges in surface chirality studies. Here we report the induction of global homochirality in two-dimensional enantiomorphous networks of achiral molecules via co-assembly with chiral co-absorbers. The scanning tunnelling microscopy investigations and molecular mechanics simulations demonstrate that the point chirality of the co-absorbers transfers to organizational chirality of the assembly units via enantioselective supramolecular interactions, and is then hierarchically amplified to the global homochirality of two-dimensional networks. The global homochirality of the network assembly shows nonlinear dependence on the enantiomeric excess of chiral co-absorber in the solution phase, demonstrating, for the first time, the validation of the 'majority rules' for the homochirality control of achiral molecules at the liquid/solid interface. Such an induction and nonlinear chirality amplification effect promises a new approach towards two-dimensional homochirality control and may reveal important insights into asymmetric heterogeneous catalysis, chiral separation and chiral crystallization.
Triple-Modulated Chiral Inversion of Co-Assembly System Based on Alanine Amphiphile and Cyanostilbene Derivative

Abstract:The construction of chiroptical materials with controllable chirality is of special importance in biology and chemistry. Although tunable chirality can be realized in various systems, it remains a fundamental challenge to realize multimodulated chiral inversion. Herein, we report that chiral alanine derivative and fluorescent cyanostilbene derivative co-assemble to prepare supramolecular chiral systems, where twist nanofibers with totally inverted supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence are obtained through stoichiometric modulation. The supramolecular handedness can be inverted by means of altering the cooling rate and incorporating metal ions. The mechanism study reveals that the synergistic effect among hydrogen bonds, coordination interactions, and π-π stacking interactions contributes to the chirality inversion. This work establishes an effective strategy to precisely modulate supramolecular chirality in multiple ways, which shows great potential in developing smart chiroptical materials capable of achieving complex functionalities.
