Abstract:We here report a molecule with chiral recognition capability by a mechanism of complexation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the solid thin film state. A molecule (1) containing the luminogenic unit silole and chiral phenylethanamine pendants is synthesized and characterized with standard spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) or fluorescence emission are observed. When aggregated into nanoparticles in a poor solvent, fluorescence is turned on but CD is still silent. When complexed with chiral acids to form a thin film, molecule 1 becomes CD-active and strongly fluorescent, showing simultaneous complexation-induced CD (CICD) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects. The assemblies of 1 with different enantiomers of mandelic acid emit distinctly handed circularly polarised light and display CPL dissymmetry factors with absolute value around 0.01. This work provides a new platform for creating molecular functional materials with solid-state chiral sensing ability through reading CPL output signals.

Abstract:The construction of macroscopic chiral luminescent aggregates with well-defined structures not only contributes to the development of functional materials but also has significant implications for analyzing chiral transfer and amplification in biological systems and self-assembly systems. Meanwhile, achieving water-soluble chiral metal nanoclusters (NCs) with high photoluminescence (PL) intensity through a convenient method remains a challenge. Herein, we reported the enhanced luminescence of gold nanoclusters stabilized by D-/L-penicillamine (D-/L-AuNCs) induced by poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) through supramolecular self-assembly strategies. FT-IR spectra and zeta potential measurements revealed that supramolecular assembly was driven by the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, which effectively limited the intramolecular vibration and rotation of the ligand and reduced nonradiative relaxation, thus improving the luminescence properties of nanoclusters. Interestingly, during the slow solvent evaporation process, chiral entanglement of assemblies was enhanced, forming macroscopic wheat-shaped superstructures. This study enriches the understanding of the self-assembly mechanism of nanoclusters and provides a pathway for constructing NC-based chiroptical materials.

Abstract:Flexible and twisted annulated π-systems exhibit numerous unique and desirable features owing to their ability to display chirality. However, preventing their racemization due to dynamic nature of their chirality remains a challenge. One promising approach to stabilize homochirality in such systems is chirality transfer from a chiral auxiliary to a moiety displaying dynamic chirality. Herein, we introduce a new approach for dynamic chirality stabilization in conformationally flexible azahelicene species via crystallization-induced intermolecular chirality transfer in Au(I) complexes featuring azahelicene (dibenzo[c,g]carbazole and benzo[c]carbazole) and enantio-pure chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with a complementary tailored shape. Crystallization of these azahelicene Au(I) complexes not only suppresses the dynamic chirality of the diben-zocarbazole species, but also stabilizes their homochirality through the intermolecular conjunction between the chiral NHC and dibenzocarbazole ligands. In the Au(I) benzocarbazole complexes, the intermolecular conjunction and chirality transfer in the crystals induces chirality in the initially achiral benzocarbazole ligand. Furthermore, the crystallization of the studied complexes activates their circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, which were suppressed in solution. Importantly, chirality transfer to significant CPL enhancement; the complexes that feature chirality transfer within the crystal structure exhibit luminescence dissymmetry factors 5 to 10 times higher than those of the complexes without chirality transfer.

Abstract:Chiral transfer and circularly polarized luminescence activity are successfully achieved by assembling ACQ molecules with chiral Ag clusters in chiral silver cluster‐based assembled materials. The chiral reticular self‐assembly exhibits markedly enhanced luminescence efficiency and glum values compared to those of the ion‐pair‐direct assembly through a well‐defined spatial arrangement and highly efficient synergy. Chiral metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are usually endowed by chiral linkers and/or guests. The strategy using chiral secondary building units in MOFs for solving the trade‐off of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)‐active materials, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and high dissymmetry factors (|glum|) has not been demonstrated. This work directionally assembles predesigned chiral silver clusters with ACQ linkers through reticular chemistry. The nanoscale chirality of the cluster transmits through MOF's framework, where the linkers are arranged in a quasi‐parallel manner and are efficiently isolated and rigidified. Consequently, this backbone of chiral cluster‐based MOFs demonstrates superb CPL, high PLQYs of 50.3%, and |glum| of 1.2 × 10−2. Crystallographic analyses and DFT calculations show the quasi‐parallel arrangement manners of emitting linkers leading to a large angle between the electric and magnetic transition dipole moments, boosting CPL response. As compared, an ion‐pair‐direct assembly without interactions between linkers induces one‐ninth |glum| and one‐sixth PLQY values, further highlighting the merits of directional arrangement in reticular nets. In addition, a prototype CPL switching fabricated by a chiral framework is controlled through alternating ultraviolet and visible light. This work is expected to inspire the development of reticular chemistry for high‐performance chiroptical materials.

Solvent-Modulated Chiral Self-Assembly: Selective Formation of Helical Nanotubes, Nanotwists, and Energy Transfer

Abstract:As the medium for self-assembly processes, solvents strongly influence the supramolecular assemblies via specific solute-solvent interactions, which may result in effective modulation of properties, self-assembled nanostructures, and functions through varying the solvent. Here, two kinds of pyridine-cyanostilbene functionalized chiral amphiphiles (l/d-PyPhG and l-PyG) were designed, and their self-assembly behaviors in different solvents were investigated. It was found that both amphiphiles formed gels in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and self-assembled into right-handed nanotwists, while they formed suspensions in ethanol consisting of left-handed nanotubes. Although the molecular chirality in the compounds remained unchanged in the two solvents, the nanoassemblies showed opposite handedness at the nanoscale together with opposite circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Furthermore, when the amphiphiles were co-assembled with an achiral dye, it was found that efficient energy transfer took place in the systems composed of nanotubes rather than those composed of nanotwists. Therefore, by assembling molecules with the same molecular chirality in different solvents, a selective formation of helical nanotubes or nanotwists and the regulation of handedness as well as energy transfer efficiency were achieved.

Abstract:We found that the interfacial confined self-assembly of pyrene and phenanthrene glutamides can form strong exciplex and amorphous superhelices, which show an intensity-enhanced and sign-inverted CPL activity with improved quantum yield compared to the pyrene excimer. Abstract:The canonical double helical π-stacked array of base pairs within DNA interior has inspired the interest in supramolecular double helical architectures with advanced electronic, magnetic and optical functions. Here, we report a selective-recognized and chirality-matched co-assembly strategy for the fabrication of fluorescent π-amino acids into double helical π-aggregates, which show exceptional strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The single crystal structure of the optimal combination of co-assemblies shows that the double-stranded helical organization of these π-amino acids is cooperatively assisted by both CH-π and hydrogen-bond arrays with chirality match. The well-defined spatial arrangement of the π-chromophores could effectively suppress the non-radiative decay pathways and facilitate chiral exciton couplings, leading to superior CPL with a strong figure of merit ( g lum = 0.14 and QY = 0.76). Our findings might open a new door for developing DNA-inspired chiroptical materials with prominent properties by enantioselective co-assembly initiated double helical π-aggregation.

Abstract:Remarkable advances have been achieved in solution self-assembly of polypeptides from the perspective of nanostructures, mechanisms, and applications. Despite the intrinsic chirality of polypeptides, the promising generation of aqueous circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) based on their self-assembly has been rarely reported due to the weak fluorescence of most polypeptides and the indeterminate self-assembly mechanism. Here, we propose a facile strategy for achieving aqueous CPL based on the self-assembly of simple homopolypeptides modified with a terminal group featuring both twisted intramolecular charge transfer and aggregation-induced emission properties. A morphology-dependent CPL can be observed under different self-assembly conditions by altering the solvents. A nanotoroid-dispersed aqueous solution with detectable CPL can be obtained by using tetrahydrofuran as a good solvent for the self-assembly, which is attributed to the involvement of the terminal group in the chiral environment formed by the homopolypeptide chains. However, such a chiral packing mode cannot be realized in nanorods self-assembled from dioxane, resulting in an inactive CPL phenomenon. Furthermore, CPL signals can be greatly amplified by co-assembly of homopolypeptides with the achiral small molecule derived from the terminal group. This work not only provides a pathway to construct aqueous CPL-active homopolypeptide nanomaterials but also reveals a potential mechanism in the self-assembly for chiral production, transfer, and amplification in polypeptide-based nanostructures.

Abstract:Herein, we report four pairs of enantiomeric platinum( II ) complexes D / L -Pt-1–Pt-4 with minor structural variations that have been found to lead to distinct self-assembly behaviors and form various well-defined nanostructures. Notably, Pt-1 exhibits polymorphic self-assembly with well-defined nanostructures, such as nanorings, nanotwists, dendritic twists, and microbelts, in various conditions through the interplay of different non-covalent interactions. Importantly, two pairs of enantiomers D / L -Pt-1–Pt-2 show significantly amplified effects for circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in their corresponding nanoassemblies. Moreover, the self-assembly process can be governed by the Pt···Pt/π–π stacking, the solvophobic interactions, and electrostatic repulsion provided by the positively charged tridentate cyclometalated platinum( II ) moieties. The detailed supramolecular polymerization pathway was systematically investigated by spectroscopy, X-ray single-crystal diffraction, and electron microscopy studies.

Abstract:The facile construction of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials through the clever combination of chirality and fluorescence is of great significance. Herein, we provide a simple and efficient synthesis of CPL-active aggregation-induced emission (AIE) helical polyisocyanides through asymmetric polymerization of commonly used chiral aryl isocyanide monomers featuring a D- or L-mentyl-ester pendant group (D/L-IMCIs) catalzyed by a novel AlEt3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] binary catalytic system. The typical fluorophore-free chiral D/L-IMCI monomers, silent in circular dichroism (CD), exhibit intriguing AIE properties. After undergoing asymmetric-induced polymerization with remarkable efficiency, the synthesized poly(D/L-IMCI)s have chiral helical structures, manifesting both CD and AIE characteristics. Based on the "matching rule" of the fluorescent moieties and chiral helical polyisocyandies, these poly(D/L-IMCI)s display distinct CPL signals in both aggregated state and film state, mirroring each other across the 400−600 nm range in THF, with a luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum|) values around 7.6–7.8 × 10–4 in THF. Moreover, the incorporation of different proportion of a achiral aryl isocyanide bearing an azobenzene pendant (IPPD) into the poly(D/L-IMCI)s through helix-sense-selective copolymerization allows for precise control over the chiroptical properties of the synthesized AIE helical poly(D/L-IMCI-ran-IPPD)s. The nonlinear relationship between the intensity of CD or CPL signals and the D/L-IMCI contents of the synthetic poly(D/L-IMCI-ran-IPPD)s clearly describes strong chiral amplification effects, achieving a maximum |glum| value exceeding 1.0 × 10-3 in THF, which is superior to those of poly(D/L-IMCI)s. These results demonstrate that the helical (co)polyisocyanide's chirality confers a chiral environment, which in turn effectively induces chirality within both the excited and ground states. This strategy provides new perspectives for the straightforward and simple construction of novel CPL-active AIE polymers through asymmetric polymerization of commonly used functional monomers.

Abstract:Chirality at different levels is widely observed in nature, but the clue to connect it all together, and the way chirality transfers among different levels are still obscure. Herein, a l-/d-lysine-based self-assembly system was constructed, in which two-step chirality transfer among three different levels was observed in aqueous solution. The chirality originated from the point chirality of amino acid derivatives l-/d-PyLys hydrochloride, and was transferred to the planar conformational chirality of water-soluble pillar[5]arene pR-/pS-WP5. Then, with the aid of pR-/pS-WP5, nanoparticles were formed that exhibited L-/R-handed circularly polarized luminescence with a dissymmetry factor of up to +/- 0.001, arising from pyrene chiral excimers. This multilevel chirality transfer not only provides a perspective to trace potential clues, and to pursue certain ways by which the chirality transfers, but also offers a strategy to create controllable CPL emission in aqueous media.

Abstract:Self-assembly is one of the most important issues of fabricating materials with precise chiral nanostructures. Herein, we constructed a chiral assembly system from amphiphiles containing hydrophobic/hydrophilic chiral coils bonded to hexabiphenyl, exhibiting controllable enantioselectivity over various aggregation behaviors. The chiral coils aroused various steric hindrances affecting intrinsic stacking tendency and compactness, leading to different aggregating behaviors, as concluded from the self-assembly investigation. The strong π-π stacking interaction between the long hexabiphenyl groups gave rise to a relatively compact arrangement in the aqueous solution, whereas the methyl side groups on the coil segments raised steric hindrance at the rigid-flexible interface, resulting in loose stacking and formation of nanostructures with a larger curvature. Compared with the achiral molecule 1 that formed micron-sized large sheets, molecules 2-4 containing chiral coils aggregated into nanodishes, which looked exactly like mosquito-repellent incense, to overcome surface tension. The helical structures effectively amplified chirality and exhibited strong circular dichroism (CD) signals, which indicate enantioselectivity. In addition, the relatively loose packing behavior permitted their co-assembly with a dye and aided efficient energy transfer, providing a foundation for the chiral application of supramolecules. Thus, by introducing a simple methyl side group in amphiphilic molecules, asymmetric synthesis and energy transfer efficiency can be realized.

Abstract:Self-assembled peptide materials with sequence-encoded properties have attracted great interest. Despite their intrinsic chirality, the generation of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) based on the self-assembly of simple peptides has been rarely reported. Here, we report the self-assembly of peptides into hierarchical helical arrays (HHAs) with controlled supramolecular handedness. The HHAs can emit full-color CPL signals after the incorporation of various achiral fluorescent molecules, and the g(lum) value is 40 times higher than that of the CPL signal from the solutions. By simply changing the amino acid sequence of the peptides, CPL signals with opposite handedness can be generated within the HHAs. The peptide HHAs can provide hydrophobic pockets to accommodate the fluorescent molecules with helical arrangement through strong aromatic stacking interactions, which are responsible for the CPL signals. This work provides a pathway to construct highly ordered chiral materials, which have broad applications in the chiroptical field.

Abstract:Understanding of the role of supramolecular chirality for tuning material optoelectronic properties has been restricted by the limited number of cases. A particular challenge is to impose supramolecular chirality onto multicolor luminescent systems that can emit in aggregation state. Here we present a selfassembly strategy from a well-selected asterisk molecule for generating supramolecular chirality with fluorescence-phosphorescence dual emission. The work takes advantages of（1） achiral chemical structure dependent peculiar self-assembly that can spontaneously undergo symmetry breaking to produce macrochirality, and（2） the assembly process can be monitored by time which due to the crystallization-driven self-assembly by self-twisting, allowing a self-progressing chiral amplification. A multicolor luminescence induced by the fluorescence-phosphorescence dual emission along with such a self-assembly behavior was also observed at a single solution system versus the time. The self-twisting chiral self-assembly fashion provides new prospects for understanding the establishment of nanochirality from achiral molecular building blocks.

Abstract:Enantiopure formation of chiral self‐templated lanthanide supramolecular structures gives rise to CPL when probed both in solution and the solid state demonstrating chirality transfer. The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl‐diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CF3SO3)3] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid‐state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X‐ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state.
