Abstract:Modulation of chiroptics, chiral phenomena of tonic switches. One of the most effective methods for applications, including chirality-specific biosensing and pho- the optical properties, is, pivotal in a variety of advanced :achieving this control is assembly of the optical moieties into chiral nanostructures. Lipopeptide self-assemblies have been extensively employed as soft templates to organize composites into low-dimensional superstructures due to their rigidity and ease of functionalization. Therefore, an appealing approach is to provide chiroptical control by using lipopeptide self assemblies as templates to assemble chromophores. Herein, two lipopeptidic molecules, namely, C-14-FFK and C-14-FK, composed of phenylalanine and lysine residues conjugated to a myristic acid chain, were custom-designed. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations indicated that C-14-FFK self-assembled to wide, slightly left-handed nanoribbons, while C-14-FK formed narrow, intensely right-handed nanofibers. The different chirality was derived from the distinct self-assembly driving forces, especially the molecular bending dimensions. These superstructures' presented an ideal capability to serve as soft templates to assemble porphyrin (ZnTPyP) through noncovalent electrostatic attractive interactions, or assemble the phenolic groups through covalent conjugation to peptide backbones. The distinct exciton coupling of the chromophores allowed their achiral optics to become chiral, showing negative Cotton effect when templated by nanoribbons and positive Cotton effect with nanofibers as templates. Following replacement of the lipopeptides with their D-type enantiomers, the handedness of the superstructures and the associated chiroptics were reversed and presented "mirror" symmetric CD signals to their L-type counterparts. These findings may pave the way to the formation of morphologically and chioptically controllable nanomaterials.
Triple-Modulated Chiral Inversion of Co-Assembly System Based on Alanine Amphiphile and Cyanostilbene Derivative

Abstract:The construction of chiroptical materials with controllable chirality is of special importance in biology and chemistry. Although tunable chirality can be realized in various systems, it remains a fundamental challenge to realize multimodulated chiral inversion. Herein, we report that chiral alanine derivative and fluorescent cyanostilbene derivative co-assemble to prepare supramolecular chiral systems, where twist nanofibers with totally inverted supramolecular chirality and circularly polarized luminescence are obtained through stoichiometric modulation. The supramolecular handedness can be inverted by means of altering the cooling rate and incorporating metal ions. The mechanism study reveals that the synergistic effect among hydrogen bonds, coordination interactions, and π-π stacking interactions contributes to the chirality inversion. This work establishes an effective strategy to precisely modulate supramolecular chirality in multiple ways, which shows great potential in developing smart chiroptical materials capable of achieving complex functionalities.

Full-Color Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Supramolecular Polymers with Handedness Inversion Regulated by Anion and Temperature

Abstract:Constructing full-color circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with switchable handedness in the solid state is an appealing yet considerably challenging task, especially for supramolecular polymer films assembled from homochiral monomers. Herein, supramolecular polymers with full-color CPL and inverted handedness are realized through the coassembly of a homochiral cholesterol derivative (PVPCC), metal ions (Zn2+), and achiral fluorescent dyes. The obtained coassembled systems show anion-directed supramolecular chirality inversion by exchanging the anions of NO3-, ClO4-, BF4-, and Cl-. For instance, the negative CD and right-handed CPL are detected in the PVPCC/Zn(NO3)2 aggregates, which convert into positive CD and left-handed CPL after introducing Cl-, corresponding to the transformation from nanorods to nanofibers. Furthermore, the tunable CPL color and handedness inversion of the coassembly system of PVPCC/Zn(NO3)2 and achiral fluorescent dyes can be established by alternately changing the assembling temperature of 298 and 273 K. Importantly, the full-color CPL polymeric materials are then constructed by doping the PVPCC/Zn(NO3)2/dyes complexes into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film, which maintains the handedness inversion and shows the enhanced CPL performance. The work not only deepens the understanding of chirality inversion in supramolecular chemistry but also helps to construct full-color CPL materials with switchable handedness from homochiral building blocks in materials science.
Active Regulation of Supramolecular Chirality through Integration of CdSe/CdS Nanorods for Strong and Tunable Circular Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Building the cooperativity in artificial self-assembling systems will synergistically reshape their properties and expand their application spectrum. Here, we show how the cooperativity between achiral CdSe/CdS nanorods (NRs) and chiral perylene diimide (PDI)-based molecules is built upon their coassembly. We demonstrate that chirality transfer from chiral molecular assemblies to CdSe/CdS NRs is enabled by the encapsulation of NRs into PDI suprascrolls through chain-chain van der Waals interactions, which in turn gives rise to markedly enhanced circularly polarized luminescence of the nanocomposites. Additionally, the circularly polarized emissive bands of the nanocomposites could be finely tuned by engineering the emissive bands of NRs. More importantly, these nanocomposites are able to invert their chirality when NRs are self-assembled into chiral superlattices under a larger amount of NRs. Detailed mechanistic studies unveil that these jammed NRs assemblies hamper the folding of two-dimensional (2D) chiral nanosheets, which consequently suppress the interlayer excitonic coupling and implement the nanocomposites with inverted chirality. Our finding exemplifies a way to invert the chirality switching from folding to unfolding of 2D supramolecular nanosheets, akin to the chirality inversion in the helix-to-superhelix transition in conventional one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular systems. We also show that the strong van der Waals interactions from aliphatic chains are crucial in achieving such chirality transfer and inversion. Overall, we demonstrate that these achiral CdS/CdSe NRs could serve as artificial molecular chaperones to aid the unfolding of supramolecular nanosheets with controlled chirality.

Abstract:Circularly polarized light (CPL), regarded as a true chiral entity, has been suggested as one possible origin of homochirality in nature. It still remains difficult to understand the exact mechanism of chiral induction, transfer and amplification in supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we designed and synthesized three discotic diacetylene LC monomers, in which the peripheral diacetylene flexible chains linked to the triazole derivative cores through H-bonding or covalent bonds. We established links between the primary chemical structures of discotic diacetylene monomers, liquid crystal phase structures and optically active properties in the final supramolecular assemblies. Moreover, the type of junction bonding interaction exhibited a significant influence on the chiral transfer in a supramolecular columnar LC system.

Abstract:Probing the supramolecular chirality of assemblies and controlling their handedness are closely related to the origin of chirality at the supramolecular level and the development of smart materials with desired handedness. However, it remains unclear how achiral residues covalently bonded to chiral amino acids can function in the chirality inversion of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we report macroscopic chirality and dynamic manipulation of chiroptical activity of hydrogels self-assembled from phenylalanine derivatives, together with the inversion of their handedness achieved solely by exchanging achiral substituents between oligo(ethylene glycol) and carboxylic acid groups. This helicity inversion is mainly induced by distinct stacking mode of the self-assembled building blocks, as collectively confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, circular dichroism, crystallography, and molecular dynamics calculations. Through this straightforward approach, we were able to invert the handedness of helical assemblies by merely exchanging achiral substituents at the terminal of chiral gelators. This work not only presents a feasible strategy to achieve the handedness inversion of helical nanostructures for better understanding of chiral self-assembly process in supramolecular chemistry but also facilities the development of smart materials with controllable handedness in materials science.

Abstract:The precise manipulation of supramolecular polymorphs has been widely applied to control the morphologies and functions of self-assemblies, but is rarely utilized for the fabrication of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials with tailored properties. Here, this work reports that an amphiphilic naphthalene-histidine compound (NIHis) readily self-assembled into distinct chiral nanostructures through pathway-dependent supramolecular polymorphism, which shows opposite and multistimuli responsive CPL signals. Specifically, NIHis display assembly-induced CPL from the polymorphic keto tautomer, which become predominant during enol-keto tautomerization shifting controlled by a bulk solvent effect. Interestingly, chiral polymorphs of nanofiber and microbelt with inverted CPL signals can be prepared from the same NIHis monomer in exactly the same solvent compositions and concentrations by only changing the temperature. The tunable CPL performance of the solid microbelts is realized under multi external physical or chemical stimuli including grinding, acid fuming, and heating. In particular, an emission color and CPL on-off switch based on the microbelt polymorph by reversible heating-cooling protocol is developed. This work brings a new approach for developing smart CPL materials via supramolecular polymorphism engineering. Handedness-inverted circularly polarized luminescent nano/micromaterials from the same monomers in the same concentrations and the same solvent have been prepared through a pathway-dependent chiral supramolecular polymorphism approach for the first time, which display multistimuli responsive and ON-OFF switching abilities. image

Abstract:Supramolecular chirality is involved not only in biological events such as gene communication, replication, and enzyme catalysis but also in artificial self-assembly systems and aggregated materials. The precise control of supramolecular chirality, and especially supramolecular chirality inversion (SMCI), would deepen the understanding of chiral transfer and regulation in both living systems and artificial self-assembly systems, providing efficient ways to construct advanced chiral materials with an optimum assembly pathway necessary for various functions. In this review, the fundamental principles of SMCI are comprehensively summarized, with a focus on the helical assemblies having opposite handedness or chiroptical properties of the compositions. Thereafter, various SMCI strategies that have been developed for chiral nanostructures and assembled materials are systematically reviewed, and the promising applications of SMCI, including chiroptical switches, chiral recognition, enantiomeric separation, asymmetric catalysis, chiral optoelectronic materials, chiral spin filters, and biomedical uses, are highlighted accordingly. Finally, the scientific challenges and future perspectives for assembling materials with SMCI are also discussed.

Abstract:Chirality at different levels is widely observed in nature, but the clue to connect it all together, and the way chirality transfers among different levels are still obscure. Herein, a l-/d-lysine-based self-assembly system was constructed, in which two-step chirality transfer among three different levels was observed in aqueous solution. The chirality originated from the point chirality of amino acid derivatives l-/d-PyLys hydrochloride, and was transferred to the planar conformational chirality of water-soluble pillar[5]arene pR-/pS-WP5. Then, with the aid of pR-/pS-WP5, nanoparticles were formed that exhibited L-/R-handed circularly polarized luminescence with a dissymmetry factor of up to +/- 0.001, arising from pyrene chiral excimers. This multilevel chirality transfer not only provides a perspective to trace potential clues, and to pursue certain ways by which the chirality transfers, but also offers a strategy to create controllable CPL emission in aqueous media.
A Single-Enantiomer Emitter Enabled Superstructural Helix Inversion for Upconverting and Downshifting Luminescence with Bidirectional Circular Polarization

Abstract:The helical twisting tendency of liquid crystals (LCs) is generally governed by the inherent configuration of the chiral emitter. Here, we introduce the multistage inversion of supramolecular chirality as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) by manipulating the ratio of single enantiomeric emitters (R-PCP) to LC monomers (5CB). Increasing the content of R-PCP from 1 wt % to 3 wt % inverted the helix of LCs from left-handed to right-handed, accompanying a CPL sign changed from positive to negative. The biaxiality of chiral emitters, as well as the steric effect of chiral-chiral and chiral-achiral interaction, were identified as the reasons for helical sense inversion. Due to the strong helical twisting power, 4 wt % R-PCP drove the photonic band gap (PBG) of chiral LCs to match up with their emission range, leading to an inversion of the CPL again with a high dissymmetry factor (≈1.2). Directly adjusting the PBG using chiral emitters is seldom achieved in cholesteric LCs. On this basis, an achiral sensitizer PtTPBP was assembled into the helical superstructure. The generation of triplet-triplet annihilation-induced upconverted CPL from R-PCP and the downshifting CPL from PtTPBP with opposite rotation was achieved in a single chiral LC system by tuning the position of the PBG.

Abstract:Here, an overview of recent advances in chiral supramolecular materials is presented. Three synthesized strategies of chiral supramolecular materials, including template‐induced, chemical synthesis, and twisted‐assembly techniques are concluded. Then the mechanisms of chirality amplification and the driving force for chiral inversion are reviewed. At last, the functions of chirality supramolecular materials are summarized. Chirality, as one of the most striking characteristics, exists at various scales in nature. Originating from the interactions of host and guest molecules, supramolecular chirality possesses huge potential in the design of functional materials. Here, an overview of the recent progress in structure designs and functions of chiral supramolecular materials is present. First, three design routes of the chiral supramolecular structure are summarized. Compared with the template‐induced and chemical synthesis strategies that depend on accurate molecular identification, the twisted‐assembly technique creates chiral materials through the ordered stacking of the nanowire or films. Next, chirality inversion and amplification are reviewed to explain the chirality transfer from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale, where the available external stimuli on the chirality inversion are also given. Lastly, owing to the optical activity and the characteristics of the layer‐by‐layer stacking structure, the supramolecular chirality materials display various excellent performances, including smart response, shape‐memorization, superior mechanical performance, and applications in biomedical fields. To sum up, this work provides a systematic review of the helical assemblies, structure design, and applications of supramolecular chirality systems.

Abstract:Three‐level chirality transfer and amplification from point chirality of small molecules to helical chirality of helical polymers and finally to supramolecular chirality of cholesteric liquid crystals consisting of chiral nonfluorescent polymers and nematic liquid crystals is constructed. Full‐color and white CPL are realized via further introducing achiral fluorophores. Anti‐counterfeiting security, information encryption, and chiral logic gate applications are developed. Chiral liquid crystal supramolecular assembly provides an ideal strategy for constructing excellent circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials. However, the chirality transfer in chiral liquid crystals normally occurs at two levels from the configurational chirality to the supramolecular phase chirality. The more precise and more levels of chirality transmission are fascinating but remain challenging. The present work reports the first success of three‐level chirality transfer and amplification from configurationally point chirality of small molecules to conformationally helical chirality of helical polymers and finally to supramolecular phase chirality of cholesteric liquid crystals composed of chiral nonfluorescent polymers (P46) and nematic liquid crystals. Noticeably, the helical twisting power of P46 is five‐fold larger than its monomer. Full‐color and white CPL with maximum luminescence dissymmetry factor up to 1.54 and photoluminescence quantum yield up to 63.8% are realized utilizing helical supramolecular assembly combined with selective reflection mechanism. Also significantly, the electrically stimuli‐responsive CPL switching device as well as anti‐counterfeiting security, information encryption, and chiral logic gate applications are developed. This study deepens the understanding of chirality transfer and amplification across different hierarchical levels.

Abstract:Chirality evolution from molecule levels to the nanoscale in an achiral system is a fundamental issue that remains undiscovered. Here, we report the assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into chiral subnanostructures in achiral systems by programmable single-molecule interactions. Driven by the competing binding of Ca2+ and surface ligands, POM assemblies would twist into helical nanobelts, nanorings, and nanotubes with tunable helicity. Chiral molecules can be used to differentiate the formation energies of chiral isomers and immobilize the homochiral isomer, where strong circular dichroism (CD) signals are obtained in both solutions and films. Chiral helical nanobelts can be used as circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors due to their distinct chiroptic responsivity for right and left CPL. By the fine-tuning of interactions at single-molecule levels, the morphology and CD spectra of helical assemblies can be precisely controlled, providing an atomic precision model for investigation of the structure-chirality relationship and chirality manipulation at the nanoscale.
Metallophilic Interactions Drive Supramolecular Chirality Evolution and Amplify Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Metallophilic interactions, which are ubiquitous among d10 metal complexes with linear coordination geometries, can direct one-dimensional assembly. However, the ability of these interactions to manipulate chirality at the hierarchical level largely remains unknown. In this work, we unveiled the role of Au···Cu metallophilic interactions in directing the chirality of multicomponent assemblies. N-heterocyclic carbene-Au(I) complexes bearing amino acid residues formed chiral co-assemblies with [CuI2]- anions via Au···Cu interactions. These metallophilic interactions changed the molecular packing modes of the co-assembled nanoarchitectures from lamellar to columnar chiral packing. This transformation initiated the emergence, inversion, and evolution of supramolecular chirality, thereby affording helical superstructures, depending on the geometry of building units. In addition, the Au···Cu interactions altered the luminescence properties and induced the emergence and amplification of circularly polarized luminescence. This work, for the first time, revealed the role of Au···Cu metallophilic interactions in modulating supramolecular chirality, paving the way for the construction of functional chiroptical materials based on d10 metal complexes.
Helical Self-Assembly-Induced Singlet–Triplet Emissive Switching in a Mechanically Sensitive System

Abstract:In nanoscience, chirality has shown a significant ability to tune materials' electronic properties, whereas imposing macrochirality into the regulation of singlet triplet features of organic optoelectronics remains a challenging research topic. Since the tuning for singlet and triplet excited-state properties in a single pi-functional molecule connects to its multicolor luminescent application and potential improvement of internal quantum efficiency, we here report that supramolecular chirality can be employed to toggle the singlet and triplet emissions in a well designed asterisk-shaped molecule. Employing a hexathiobenzene-based single luminophore as a prototype and functionalizing it with chiral alpha-lipoiate side groups, we find that helical nanoarchitectures can accordingly form in mixed DMF/H2O solution. On this basis, switching between fluorescence and phosphorescence of the material can be realized upon helical self-assembly and dissociation. Such a behavior can be attributed to a helical-conformation-dependent manipulation of the intersystem crossing. Furthermore, reversible mechanoluminescence of the corresponding solid sample was also observed to rely on an analogous molecular self-assembly alternation. These results can probably provide new visions for the development of next-generation supramolecular chiral functional materials.

Nevertheless, due to the complexity and flexibility of noncovalent interactions, switching the chirality of entire supramolecular assemblies has hitherto remained a challenge. Here we report the electric field-controlled chirality switching of pentacene pinwheel arrays and two-dimensional (2D) network domains. Pentacene molecules on Cd(0001) surface form the porous network structure with building blocks of hexamer pinwheels. Driven by the electric field from a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip, the supramolecular chirality of pentacene pinwheels and the organizational chirality of entire network domains can be simultaneously switched from one enantiomorph to another. Furthermore, such chiral switching is reversible and repeatable under successive voltage pulses. First-principles calculations demonstrate that electric field significantly modulates the interfacial charge transfer and induces the Coulomb expansion of pentacene layers, and the subsequent reaggregation leads to the chiral flipping of the supramolecular pinwheels and 2D domains. Our results provide a new strategy for dynamic control of the 2D chiral structures and help to steer the supramolecular assembly toward homochirality.

Abstract:Dynamic chemistry utilizing both covalent and noncovalent bonds provides valid protocols in manipulating properties of self-assemblies and functions. Here we employ dynamic chemistry to realize multiple-route control over supramolecular chirality up to five states. N-protected fluorinated phenylalanine in the carboxylate state self-assembled into achiral nanoparticles ascribed to the amphiphilicity. Protonation promoted one-dimensional growth into helices with shrunk hydrophilicity, which in the presence of disulfide pyridine undergo chirality inversion promoted by the hydrogen bonding-directed coassembly. Further interacting with the water-soluble reductant cleavages the disulfide bond to initiate the rearrangement of coassemblies with a chirality inversion as well. Finally, by tuning the pH environments, aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction between reduced products and perfluorinated phenylalanine occurs, giving distinct chiral nanoarchitectures with emerged luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. We thus realized a particular five-state control by combining dynamic chemistry at one chiral compound, which greatly enriches the toolbox in fabricating responsive chiroptical materials.
