Abstract:Modulation of chiroptics, chiral phenomena of tonic switches. One of the most effective methods for applications, including chirality-specific biosensing and pho- the optical properties, is, pivotal in a variety of advanced :achieving this control is assembly of the optical moieties into chiral nanostructures. Lipopeptide self-assemblies have been extensively employed as soft templates to organize composites into low-dimensional superstructures due to their rigidity and ease of functionalization. Therefore, an appealing approach is to provide chiroptical control by using lipopeptide self assemblies as templates to assemble chromophores. Herein, two lipopeptidic molecules, namely, C-14-FFK and C-14-FK, composed of phenylalanine and lysine residues conjugated to a myristic acid chain, were custom-designed. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations indicated that C-14-FFK self-assembled to wide, slightly left-handed nanoribbons, while C-14-FK formed narrow, intensely right-handed nanofibers. The different chirality was derived from the distinct self-assembly driving forces, especially the molecular bending dimensions. These superstructures' presented an ideal capability to serve as soft templates to assemble porphyrin (ZnTPyP) through noncovalent electrostatic attractive interactions, or assemble the phenolic groups through covalent conjugation to peptide backbones. The distinct exciton coupling of the chromophores allowed their achiral optics to become chiral, showing negative Cotton effect when templated by nanoribbons and positive Cotton effect with nanofibers as templates. Following replacement of the lipopeptides with their D-type enantiomers, the handedness of the superstructures and the associated chiroptics were reversed and presented "mirror" symmetric CD signals to their L-type counterparts. These findings may pave the way to the formation of morphologically and chioptically controllable nanomaterials.

Abstract:Unraveling the chirality transfer mechanism is the key to governing chiral expression and structure–property relationships and further constructing new chiral functional devices. Herein, we have systematically investigated the chiral assembly, chiral transfer, and modulation of block copolymers (BCPs) at the molecular, supramolecular, liquid-crystalline (LC) phase, and macroscopic morphological levels. It is revealed that the strength of the LC ordering of Azo mesogens, the solvophobic length of core-forming blocks, and the coupling effects between polymer side chains and backbones play important roles in the chiral evolution and shape change. Furthermore, the various morphologies with different shapes were achieved in the chirality transfer process, including spheres, nanofibers (worms and helical nanowires), vesicles, and more complex large compound micelles. The chiroptical response with morphological changes could be controlled by the in situ photoisomerization of the Azo units. This work provides new insights into designing self-assembled systems with tunable chirality and morphology and could advance the understanding of chiral transfer from molecules to polymeric aggregates.

Abstract:In the context of sustainable development, research regarding chirality has aroused enormous attention. Concurrently, chiral self-assembly is one of the most important subjects in supramolecular research, which can broaden the applications of chiral materials. This study focuses on the morphology control of amphiphilic rod-coil molecules composed of the rigid hexaphenyl unit and flexible oligoethylene and butoxy groups containing lateral methyl groups, carried out using an enantioseparation application. The methyl side chain being located on different blocks influences the driving force through steric hindrance, which determines the direction and degree of tilted packing during the π-π stacking of the self-assembly process. Interestingly, the amphiphilic rod-coil molecules aggregated into long helical nano-fibers, which further hierarchically aggregated into nano-sheets or nano-tubes upon increasing the concentration of the THF/H2O solution. In particular, the hierarchical-chiral assembly effectively amplified the chirality and was validated by the strong Cotton signals; playing a vital role in the enantioselective nucleophilic substitution reaction. These results provide new insights into the applications of chiral self-assemblies and soft chiral materials.

Abstract:Supramolecular chirality, generated by the asymmetric assembly of chiral or achiral molecules, has attracted intense study owing to its potential to offer insights into natural biological structures and its crucial roles in advanced materials. The optical activity and stacking pathway of building molecules both greatly determine the chirality of the whole supramolecular structure. The flexibility of supramolecular structures makes their chirality easy to modulate through abundant means. Adjustment of the molecular structure or packing mode, or external stimuli that act like a finger gently pushing toy bricks, can greatly change the chirality of supramolecular assemblies. The dynamic regulation of chiral nanostructures on the intramolecular, intermolecular, and external levels could be regarded as the modulatory essence in numerous strategies, however, this perspective is ignored in most reviews in the literature. Herein, therefore, we focus on the ingenious dynamic modulation of chiral nanostructures by these factors. Through dynamic modulation with changes in chiroptical spectroscopy and electron microscopy, the mechanism of formation of supramolecular chirality is also elaborated.

Abstract:Chirality evolution from molecule levels to the nanoscale in an achiral system is a fundamental issue that remains undiscovered. Here, we report the assembly of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters into chiral subnanostructures in achiral systems by programmable single-molecule interactions. Driven by the competing binding of Ca2+ and surface ligands, POM assemblies would twist into helical nanobelts, nanorings, and nanotubes with tunable helicity. Chiral molecules can be used to differentiate the formation energies of chiral isomers and immobilize the homochiral isomer, where strong circular dichroism (CD) signals are obtained in both solutions and films. Chiral helical nanobelts can be used as circularly polarized light (CPL) photodetectors due to their distinct chiroptic responsivity for right and left CPL. By the fine-tuning of interactions at single-molecule levels, the morphology and CD spectra of helical assemblies can be precisely controlled, providing an atomic precision model for investigation of the structure-chirality relationship and chirality manipulation at the nanoscale.

Abstract:The tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly employed where various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines are used to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine based on a copolymerization‐mediated strategy to modulate the macroscopic helicity as well as the chiroptical activity of the resulting robust covalent polymers in an enantiopure template molecular system. Designing artificial systems to mimic chiral superstructures and exploring how achiral molecules precisely modulate their chirality is crucial to understand the origin of homochirality in nature. Herein, the tunability nature of supramolecular chirality is subtly applied to fabricate robust chiral covalent polymers with controlled macroscopic helicity. When using conventional supramolecular transcription methods to prepare chiral poly(m‐phenylenediamine), simply introducing various small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines (DAPs) to copolymerize with m‐phenylenediamine (MPD) enables the resulting chiral copolymers with adjustable helical configurations and chiroptical activities in an enantiopure template system. The strong hydrogen bonds between DAPs and the template molecules ((S)/(R)‐PhgC16) proved to be the driving force for guiding the chiral polymerization mode of MPD. Impressively, the exquisite self‐sorting phenomenon is observed by tuning the stoichiometric ratio of DAP and (R)‐PhgC16, where the as‐prepared copolymers with opposite helicity can exist simultaneously to form a double network structure and their chiroptical activity can be well regulated. In addition, based on such a copolymerization strategy, a conceptual library of helical functional copolymers is built with editable polymer types including conducting polymers and designable amine‐aldehyde condensation‐based polymers. This copolymerization‐mediated synthetic strategy may facilitate the development of chiral polymers with controlled morphologies and dynamic compositions.

Abstract:Chirality delivers substantial value to the field of supramolecular polymers, not only serving as a probe to monitor the dynamic assembly process but providing access to chiroptical materials. The current study demonstrates that, for supramolecular donor-acceptor copolymers, their comonomer organization modes can be greatly influenced by stereocommunication at the molecular level. The enantiopure N-[(1R or 1S)-phenylethyl]benzamides are incorporated into two structurally similar comonomers, locating between the π-aromatic diethynylacene core and the alkyl chain peripheries. Parallel arrangement of the stereogenic methyl units brings steric hindrance between the homochiral comonomers, which is relieved for the heterochiral comonomers due to the adoption of staggered arrangement. It consequently steers randomly mixed organization for the homochiral supramolecular copolymers within the nanofibers. In comparison, the heterochiral counterparts form nanoparticles in an alternate donor-acceptor organization manner. The variation of comonomer arrangement modes gives rise to distinct energy transfer efficiency at the supramolecular level. Overall, the elaborate manipulation of stereogenic centers in the comonomer structures exerts significant impacts on the characteristics of supramolecular copolymers, which could be useful for chiral sensing, recognition, and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Regulating the mutual stacking arrangements is of great interest for understanding the origin of chirality at different hierarchical levels in nature. Different from molecular level chirality, the control and manipulation of hierarchical chirality in polymer systems is limited to the use of external factors as the energetically demanding switching stimulus. Herein, the first self-assembly strategy of polymerization-induced helicity inversion (PIHI), in which the controlled packing and dynamic stereomutation of azobenzene (Azo) building blocks are realized by in situ polymerization without any external stimulus, is reported. A multiple helicity inversion and intriguing helix–helix transition of polymeric supramolecular nanofibers occurs during polymerization, which is collectively confirmed to be mediated by the transition between functionality-oriented π–π stacking, H-, and J-aggregation. The studies further reveal that helicity inversion proceeds through a delicate interplay of the thermodynamically and kinetically controlled, pathway-dependent interconversion process, which should provide new insight into the origin and handedness control of helical nanostructures with desired chirality.

Abstract:Probing the supramolecular chirality of assemblies and controlling their handedness are closely related to the origin of chirality at the supramolecular level and the development of smart materials with desired handedness. However, it remains unclear how achiral residues covalently bonded to chiral amino acids can function in the chirality inversion of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we report macroscopic chirality and dynamic manipulation of chiroptical activity of hydrogels self-assembled from phenylalanine derivatives, together with the inversion of their handedness achieved solely by exchanging achiral substituents between oligo(ethylene glycol) and carboxylic acid groups. This helicity inversion is mainly induced by distinct stacking mode of the self-assembled building blocks, as collectively confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, circular dichroism, crystallography, and molecular dynamics calculations. Through this straightforward approach, we were able to invert the handedness of helical assemblies by merely exchanging achiral substituents at the terminal of chiral gelators. This work not only presents a feasible strategy to achieve the handedness inversion of helical nanostructures for better understanding of chiral self-assembly process in supramolecular chemistry but also facilities the development of smart materials with controllable handedness in materials science.

Abstract:Self-assembly is one of the most important issues of fabricating materials with precise chiral nanostructures. Herein, we constructed a chiral assembly system from amphiphiles containing hydrophobic/hydrophilic chiral coils bonded to hexabiphenyl, exhibiting controllable enantioselectivity over various aggregation behaviors. The chiral coils aroused various steric hindrances affecting intrinsic stacking tendency and compactness, leading to different aggregating behaviors, as concluded from the self-assembly investigation. The strong π-π stacking interaction between the long hexabiphenyl groups gave rise to a relatively compact arrangement in the aqueous solution, whereas the methyl side groups on the coil segments raised steric hindrance at the rigid-flexible interface, resulting in loose stacking and formation of nanostructures with a larger curvature. Compared with the achiral molecule 1 that formed micron-sized large sheets, molecules 2-4 containing chiral coils aggregated into nanodishes, which looked exactly like mosquito-repellent incense, to overcome surface tension. The helical structures effectively amplified chirality and exhibited strong circular dichroism (CD) signals, which indicate enantioselectivity. In addition, the relatively loose packing behavior permitted their co-assembly with a dye and aided efficient energy transfer, providing a foundation for the chiral application of supramolecules. Thus, by introducing a simple methyl side group in amphiphilic molecules, asymmetric synthesis and energy transfer efficiency can be realized.

Abstract:Biological homochirality is a signature of life. Supramolecular polymerization is effective to achieve high hierarchical homochirality in nature, but has not been well-explored. Herein, we report regioselective and homochiral supramolecular polymerization of chiral nanotadpole aggregates made of either synthetic helical poly(phenylacetylene)s or chirality-amplified co-assembly of chiral and achiral poly(phenylacetylene)s. The twisted nanotadpole aggregates with high screw-sense preference polymerized as monomers (aggremers) into supramolecular chains in a head-to-tail regioselective and stepwise manner. Supramolecular copolymerization of enantiomeric aggremers favored formation of homochiral hierarchical supramolecular structures as visualized by TEM. Chiral hexagonal columnar mesophase of aggremers was responsive for the stereoselectivity. The work opens a gate to controllably and effectively construct functional chiral supramolecular materials and deepens the understanding of hierarchical biological homochirality.

Induction and modulation of supramolecular chirality in side-chain azobenzene polymers through the covalent chiral domino effect

Abstract:Induction, transfer, and modulation of intriguing supramolecular chirality were achieved in a chiral domino-type polymer system using a chiral α-end azobenzene (Azo) moiety as one chiral terminus and achiral Azo repeating units as building blocks. The Azo polymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization were imparted with well-controlled chain lengths and a chiral moiety at a well-defined position. One chiral terminus can effectively dictate the helical orientation of the achiral Azo stacks in the aggregation state. The spacer length between the chiral residue and the achiral repeating units dominates the preferred handedness of the side-chain Azo stacks. For instance, the R-configuration moiety with a short alkyl chain (with 0, 2, and 3 carbons) induces right-handed supramolecular chirality, whereas those with long alkyl chains (with 4, 5, and 6 carbons) induce the opposite helical orientation of the Azo units. Moreover, the chiral regulation of polymer aggregates is successfully achieved using the unique photoisomerization transition of the Azo chromophore and the heat-assisted reassembly approach. Chiral induction and chiral-to-achiral communication are further verified via theoretical simulations.

Abstract:The generation of chirality in supramolecular structures from achiral building blocks has remained a challenge for a long time. In this study, we present a vortex-assisted chiral supramolecular polymerization from a series of achiral C 3 -symmetric monomers, where the mechanism of symmetry-breaking is systematically investigated. By increasing the supersaturation, at the early stage of nucleation and growth, highly ordered assemblies can be generated as the initial chiral nuclei. Meanwhile, chiral assemblies from high supersaturation are hard to interwind into clusters, where clusters as nuclei are not conducive to being fractured by sheer force of vortex fluid. Therefore, it is concluded that chiral assemblies in the nucleation stage possess low energy barrier, so that chiral nuclei could be fractured and replicated by the vortex. By enlarging the initial chiral bias, the major chiral nuclei can evolute into the final chiral polymers.

Abstract:Supramolecular chirality is involved not only in biological events such as gene communication, replication, and enzyme catalysis but also in artificial self-assembly systems and aggregated materials. The precise control of supramolecular chirality, and especially supramolecular chirality inversion (SMCI), would deepen the understanding of chiral transfer and regulation in both living systems and artificial self-assembly systems, providing efficient ways to construct advanced chiral materials with an optimum assembly pathway necessary for various functions. In this review, the fundamental principles of SMCI are comprehensively summarized, with a focus on the helical assemblies having opposite handedness or chiroptical properties of the compositions. Thereafter, various SMCI strategies that have been developed for chiral nanostructures and assembled materials are systematically reviewed, and the promising applications of SMCI, including chiroptical switches, chiral recognition, enantiomeric separation, asymmetric catalysis, chiral optoelectronic materials, chiral spin filters, and biomedical uses, are highlighted accordingly. Finally, the scientific challenges and future perspectives for assembling materials with SMCI are also discussed.

Abstract:Although supramolecular chirality tuning is prosperous in systems with small molecular building blocks, these systems lack structural strength and have limited practical applications. Conversely, polymer systems do not exhibit these drawbacks but suffer from topological chain entanglement, which often leads to large dynamic obstacles and therefore limits the tunability of supramolecular chirality. Herein, we report that by manipulating stoichiometry and employing light to alter the H-bond crosslinking between a photoexcitation-induced aggregatable molecule and high molecular weight poly(L-lactic acids), supramolecular chirality tuning of the polymer gel systems can be achieved in different ways through a cooperative self-assembly. Specifically, the Cotton effects of the examined systems can be negatively tuned by varying their stoichiometry, while positive tuning can be realized by photoirradiation. After deexcitation, negative Cotton effect tuning occurs again spontaneously in some cases. Such supramolecular chirality tuning is accompanied by rheological property tuning, demonstrating that our strategy can overcome polymer chain entanglement limitations. The proposed strategy inspires further works on the precise control of polymer chirality and, hence, development of asymmetric materials with changeable optical activity and modulus.

Abstract:While manipulating the helicity of nanostructures is a challenging task, it attracts great research interest on account of its crucial role in better understanding the formation mechanisms of helical systems. For the supramolecular chirality in self-assembly systems, one challenge is how to understand the origin of supramolecular chirality and inherent helicity information on nanostructures regulated by functionality-oriented stacking modes (such as J- and H-aggregation) of building blocks. Herein, two-component hydrogels were prepared by phenylalanine-based enantiomers and achiral bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, where helical nanofibers with inverse handedness as well as controllable helical pitch and diameter were readily obtained through stoichiometric coassembly of these building blocks. The helix inversion was achieved by the transition between the J- and H-aggregation of bis(pyridinyl) derivatives, which was collectively confirmed by circular dichroism, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, the helical coassemblies with opposite handedness could be obtained not only from the enantiomeric building blocks but also from the chiral monomers with the same configurational chirality by exchanging achiral additives. This work provides insight into the origin and helicity inversion of supramolecular chirality in molecular self-assembly systems and may shine light on the precise fabrication of chiral nanostructures for potential applications in smart display devices, optoelectronics, and biological systems.
Molecular Chirality and Morphological Structural Chirality of Exogenous Chirality-Induced Liquid Crystalline Block Copolymers

Abstract:Chiral expression from the molecular to macromolecular level, as well as aggregates, plays an important role in natural physiological activity. Therefore, understanding the chirality transfer mechanism will provide guidance for the design of new functional chiral materials. Herein, we have systematically investigated the chiral assembly and transfer from the molecular to morphological level in liquid crystalline block copolymers (LC-BCPs) induced by enantiopure tartaric acid (TA) as a chiral source. Both the experimental and theoretical results indicate that the self-organization of the liquid crystal side chains and H-bonding interactions formed between the chiral additive and LC-BCPs are key factors for chiral expression in the self-assembly of LC-BCPs doped with TA. Furthermore, the various morphologies, including particles, spheres, worms, helical cylinders, and spirals, were observed in the LC-BCPs using transmission electron microscopy. The strength of the liquid crystal related to the azobenzene side chain structure has a crucial effect on the morphological transition. This work provides guidance for the design of diverse chiral nanostructures in a chiral molecule-induced achiral polymer system and may establish a fabrication platform for chiral cryptography, optical metamaterials, and other potential applications.
