Abstract:We here report a molecule with chiral recognition capability by a mechanism of complexation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the solid thin film state. A molecule (1) containing the luminogenic unit silole and chiral phenylethanamine pendants is synthesized and characterized with standard spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) or fluorescence emission are observed. When aggregated into nanoparticles in a poor solvent, fluorescence is turned on but CD is still silent. When complexed with chiral acids to form a thin film, molecule 1 becomes CD-active and strongly fluorescent, showing simultaneous complexation-induced CD (CICD) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects. The assemblies of 1 with different enantiomers of mandelic acid emit distinctly handed circularly polarised light and display CPL dissymmetry factors with absolute value around 0.01. This work provides a new platform for creating molecular functional materials with solid-state chiral sensing ability through reading CPL output signals.
Surface-Doped Quasi-2D Chiral Organic Single Crystals for Chiroptical Sensing

Abstract:Chiral organic optoelectronics using circularly polarized light (CPL) as the key element in the photonic signal has recently emerged as a next-generation photonic technology. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve high polarization selectivity and superior optoelectronic performance. Supramolecular two-dimensional (2D) chiral organic single crystals may be, good candidates for this purpose due to their defect-free nature, molecular diversity, and morphologies. Here, quasi-2D single crystals of chiral perylene diimides with parallelogram and triangle/hexagon morphologies have been selectively fabricated via self-assembly using different cosolvent systems. These materials exhibit amplified circular dichroism (CD) spectral signals, due to their molecular packing modes and supramolecular chirality. Through molecular surface n-doping using hydrazine, chiral single crystals exhibit electron mobility surpassing 1.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is one of the highest among chiral organic semiconductors, and excellent optoelectronic functions. Theoretical calculations reveal that the radical anions formed by n-doping increase the electron affinity and/or reduce the energy gap, thus facilitating electron transport. More importantly, the doped organic chiral crystals selectively discriminate CPL handedness with a high anisotropy factor of photoresponsivity (similar to 0.12). These results demonstrate that surface-doped quasi-2D chiral organic single crystals are highly promising for chiral optoelectronics.

Abstract:Conformational flexibility and chirality both play a key role in molecular recognition. It is therefore very useful to develop spectroscopic methods that simultaneously probe both properties. It has been theoretically predicted that photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) should be very sensitive to conformational isomerism. However, experimental proof has been less forthcoming and only exists for a very few favorable cases. Here, we present a new PECD scheme based on resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization (RE2PI) using UV/Vis nanosecond laser excitations. The spectral resolution obtained thereby guarantees conformer-selectivity by inducing resonant conformer-specific pp* S1¬S0 transitions. We apply this experimental scheme to the study of chiral 1-indanol, which exists in two conformers linked by a ring inversion and defined by the position of the hydroxyl group, namely axial and equatorial. We show that the PECD of the equatorial and axial forms considerably differ in sign, magnitude and shape. We also discuss the influence of the total ionization energy, vibronic excitation of intermediate and final states, and relative polarization of the excitation and ionization lasers. Conformer-specificity adds a new dimension to the applications of PECD in analytical chemistry addressing now the general case of floppy systems.

Tracking Chirality in Photoelectron Circular Dichroism

Abstract:Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) originates from the interplay between a molecule's chiral nuclear scaffold and a circularly polarized ionizing laser field. It is one of the most sensitive characterization techniques for the chirality of molecules in the gas phase. However, due to the complexity of the observable, it is generally difficult to predict and track how and when the chirality of the molecule is imprinted onto the photoelectron. Here, we present simulations of PECD for single-photon ionization in a hydrogenic single-electron model with an artificial chiral potential. This framework allows us to systematically tune the system's chirality and characterize the emergence of PECD. To this end, we propose chirality measures for potentials and wave functions to establish a quantitative connection with the resulting anisotropy in the photelectron distribution. We show that these chirality measures are suitable indicators for chirality in our model, paving the way for tracking the evolution of chirality from the nuclear scaffold to the final observable.

Capturing electron-driven chiral dynamics in UV-excited molecules

Abstract:Molecular chirality is a key design property for many technologies including bioresponsive imaging, circularly polarized light detection and emission, molecular motors and switches. Imaging and manipulating the primary steps of transient chirality is therefore central for controlling numerous physical, chemical and biological properties that arise from chiral molecules in response to external stimuli. So far, the manifestation of electron-driven chiral dynamics in neutral molecules has not been demonstrated at their intrinsic timescale. Here, we use time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD) with an unprecedented instrument response function of 2.9 fs to image the dynamics of coherent electronic motion activated by prompt UV-excitation in neutral chiral molecules, disclosing its impact on the molecular chiral response. We find that electronic beatings between Rydberg states lead to periodic modulations of the chiroptical response on the few-femtosecond timescale, showing a sign inversion in less than 10 fs. Calculations including both the molecular UV-excitation and subsequent photoionization confirm this interpretation and provide further evidence that the combination of the resulting photoinduced chiral current with a circularly polarized probe pulse realizes an enantio-selective filter of molecular orientations upon photoionization, opening up a route towards enantio-selective charge-directed reactivity.

Abstract:Photoionization of chiral molecules by circularly polarized radiation gives rise to a strong forward/backward asymmetry in the photoelectron angular distribution, referred to as photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD). Here we show that PECD is a universal effect that reveals the inherent chirality of the target in all ionization regimes: single photon, multiphoton, above-threshold and tunnel ionization. These different regimes provide complementary spectroscopic information at electronic and vibrational levels. The universality of the PECD can be understood in terms of a classical picture of the ionizing process, in which electron scattering on the chiral potential under the influence of a circularly polarized electric field results in a strong forward/backward asymmetry.

Abstract:Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a highly sensitive enantiospecific spectroscopy for studying chiral molecules in the gas phase using either single-photon ionization or multiphoton ionization. In the short pulse limit investigated with femtosecond lasers, resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) is rather instantaneous and typically occurs simultaneously via more than one vibrational or electronic intermediate state due to limited frequency resolution. In contrast, vibrational resolution in the REMPI spectrum can be achieved using nanosecond lasers. In this work, we follow the high-resolution approach using a tunable narrow-band nanosecond laser to measure REMPI-PECD through distinct vibrational levels in the intermediate 3s and 3p Rydberg states of fenchone. We observe the PECD to be essentially independent of the vibrational level. This behaviour of the chiral sensitivity may pave the way for enantiomer specific molecular identification in multi-component mixtures: one can specifically excite a sharp, vibrationally resolved transition of a distinct molecule to distinguish different chiral species in mixtures.

Abstract:We studied strong-field multiphoton ionization of 1-iodo-2-methylbutane enantiomers with 395 nm circularly polarized laser pulses experimentally and theoretically. For randomly oriented molecules, we observe spin polarization up to about 15%, which is independent of the molecular enantiomer. Our experimental findings are explained theoretically as an intricate interplay between three contributions from HOMO, HOMO-1, and HOMO-2, which are formed of 5p-electrons of the iodine atom. For uniaxially oriented molecules, our theory demonstrates even larger spin polarization. Abstract:We present a unique experimental design that enables the measurement of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) from chiral molecules in aqueous solution. The effect is revealed from the intensity difference of photoelectron emission into a backward-scattering angle relative to the photon propagation direction when ionizing with circularly polarized light of different helicity. This leads to asymmetries (normalized intensity differences) that depend on the handedness of the chiral sample and exceed the ones in conventional dichroic mechanisms by orders of magnitude. The asymmetry is largest for photon energies within several electron volts above the ionization threshold. A primary aim is to explore the effect of hydration on PECD. The modular and flexible design of our experimental setup EASI (Electronic structure from Aqueous Solutions and Interfaces) also allows for detection of more common photoelectron angular distributions (PADs), requiring distinctively different detection geometries, and typically using linearly polarized light. A microjet is used for liquid-sample delivery. We describe EASI's technical features and present two selected experimental results, one based on synchrotron-light measurements and the other performed in the laboratory, using monochromatized He-II $\alpha$ radiation. The former demonstrates the principal effectiveness of PECD detection, illustrated for prototypic gas-phase fenchone. We also discuss the first data from liquid fenchone. In the second example we present valence photoelectron spectra from liquid water and NaI aqueous solution, here obtained from a planar-surface microjet (flatjet). This new development features a more favorable symmetry for angle-dependent photoelectron measurements.

Abstract:The photoionization of chiral molecules prepared in a coherent superposition of excited states can give access to the underlying chiral coherent dynamics in a procedure known as photoexcitation induced photoelectron circular dichroism (PXECD). This exclusive dependence on coherence can also be seen in a different part of the angular spectrum, where it is not contingent on the chirality of the molecule, thus allowing extension of PXECD's sensitivity to tracking coherence to non-chiral molecules. Here we present a general theory of PXECD based on angular momentum algebra and derive explicit expressions for all pertinent asymmetry parameters which arise for arbitrary polarisation of pump and probe pulses. The theory is developed in a way that clearly and simply separates chiral and non-chiral contributions to the photoelectron angular distribution, and also demonstrates how PXECD and PECD-type contributions, which may be distinguished by whether pump or ionizing probe enables chiral response, are mixed when arbitrary polarization is used.

Continuum-electron interferometry for enhancement of photoelectron circular dichroism and measurement of bound, free, and mixed contributions to chiral response

Abstract:We develop photoelectron interferometry based on laser-assisted extreme ultraviolet ionization for flexible and robust control of photoelectron circular dichroism in randomly oriented chiral molecules. A comb of XUV photons ionizes a sample of chiral molecules in the presence of a time-delayed infrared or visible laser pulse promoting interferences between components of the XUV-ionized photoelectron wave packet. In striking contrast to multicolor phase control schemes relying on pulse shaping techniques, the magnitude of the resulting chiral signal is here controlled by the time delay between the XUV and laser pulses. Furthermore, we show that the relative polarization configurations of the XUV and IR fields allows for disentangling the contributions of bound and continuum states to the chiral response. Our proposal provides a simple, robust and versatile tool for the control of photoelectron circular dichroism and experimentally feasible protocol for probing the individual contributions of bound and continuum states to the PECD in a time-resolved manner.

Abstract:We demonstrate coherent control over the photoelectron circular dichroism in randomly oriented chiral molecules, based on quantum interference between multiple photoionization pathways. To significantly enhance the chiral signature, we use a finite manifold of indistinguishable $(1+1^\prime)$ REMPI pathways interfering at a common photoelectron energy but probing different intermediate states. We show that this coherent control mechanism maximizes the number of molecular states that constructively contribute to the dichroism at an optimal photoelectron energy and thus outperforms other schemes, including interference between opposite-parity pathways driven by bichromatic $({\omega}, 2{\omega})$ fields as well as sequential pump-probe ionization.

Abstract:We show that the combination of two achiral components - atomic or molecular target plus a circularly polarized photon - can yield chirally structured photoelectron angular distributions. For photoionization of CO, the angular distribution of carbon K-shell photoelectrons is chiral when the molecular axis is neither perpendicular nor (anti-)parallel to the light propagation axis. In photo-double-ionization of He, the distribution of one electron is chiral, if the other electron is oriented like the molecular axis in the former case and if the electrons are distinguishable by their energy. In both scenarios, the circularly polarized photon defines a plane with a sense of rotation and an additional axis is defined by the CO molecule or one electron. This is sufficient to establish an unambiguous coordinate frame of well-defined handedness. To produce a chirally structured electron angular distribution, such a coordinate frame is necessary, but not sufficient. We show that additional electron-electron interaction or scattering processes are needed to create the chiral angular distribution.

Photoelectron circular dichroism upon multiphoton ionization of a chiral alcohol

Abstract:We present the first photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) measurements of chiral alcohols, and in particular 1-Phenylethanol, using multiphoton ionization at 400 nm. Observed PECD values were rather small at $\sim2$%, but could be reliably extracted using both hemispherical integration and Abel inversion approaches. Experimental uncertainties of $<0.3$% (2$\sigma$) were achieved with a collection time of around 2 hours. All experiments were conducted in a new compact spectrometer, featuring a continuous flow supersonic expansion and velocity-map imaging detection. The latter is crucial to extract reliable PECD values, as it allows discrimination of different features in the photoelectron spectrum, which exhibit different and opposing PECD signals. The use of a tabletop multiphoton universal ionization scheme is an important step towards a viable analytical chiral spectrometer based on PECD.

Abstract:Photoionization of randomly oriented chiral molecules with circularly polarized light leads to a strong forward/backward asymmetry in the photoelectron angular distribution. This chiroptical effect, referred to as Photoelectron Circular Dichroism (PECD), was shown to take place in all ionization regimes, from single photon to tunnel ionization. In the Resonance Enhanced Multiphoton Ionisation (REMPI) regime, where most of the table-top PECD experiments have been performed, understanding the role of the intermediate resonances is currently the subject of experimental and theoretical investigations. In an attempt to decouple the role of bound-bound and bound-continuum transitions in REMPI-PECD, we photoionized the (+)-limonene enantiomer using two-color laser fields in [1+1'] and [2+2'] ionization schemes, where the polarization state of each color can be controlled independently. We demonstrate that the main effect of the bound-bound transition is to break the sample isotropy by orientation-dependent photoexcitation, in agreement with recent theoretical pre- dictions. We show that the angular distribution of PECD strongly depends on the anisotropy of photoexcitation to the intermediate state, which is different for circularly and linearly polarized laser pulses. On the contrary, the helicity of the pulse that drives the bound-bound transition is shown to have a negligible effect on the PECD.

Photoelectron circular dichroism of a chiral molecule induced by resonant interatomic Coulombic decay from an antenna atom

Abstract:We show that a nonchiral atom can act as an antenna to induce a photoelectron circular dichroism in a nearby chiral molecule in a three-step process: The donor atom (antenna) is initially resonantly excited by circularly polarized radiation. It then transfers its excess energy to the acceptor molecule by means of resonant interatomic Coulombic decay. The latter finally absorbs the energy and emits an electron which exhibits the aforementioned circular dichroism in its angular distribution. We study the process on the basis of the retarded dipole--dipole interaction and report an asymptotic analytic expression for the distance-dependent chiral asymmetry of the photoelectron as induced by resonant interatomic Coulombic decay for random line-of-sight and acceptor orientations. In the nonretarded limit, the predicted chiral asymmetry is reversed as compared to that of a direct photoelectron circular dichroism of the molecule.

Genome Variation in Cryptococcus gattii, an Emerging Pathogen of Immunocompetent Hosts

Abstract:ABSTRACT Cryptococcus gattii recently emerged as the causative agent of cryptococcosis in healthy individuals in western North America, despite previous characterization of the fungus as a pathogen in tropical or subtropical regions. As a foundation to study the genetics of virulence in this pathogen, we sequenced the genomes of a strain (WM276) representing the predominant global molecular type (VGI) and a clinical strain (R265) of the major genotype (VGIIa) causing disease in North America. We compared these C. gattii genomes with each other and with the genomes of representative strains of the two varieties of Cryptococcus neoformans that generally cause disease in immunocompromised people. Our comparisons included chromosome alignments, analysis of gene content and gene family evolution, and comparative genome hybridization (CGH). These studies revealed that the genomes of the two representative C. gattii strains (genotypes VGI and VGIIa) are colinear for the majority of chromosomes, with some minor rearrangements. However, multiortholog phylogenetic analysis and an evaluation of gene/sequence conservation support the existence of speciation within the C. gattii complex. More extensive chromosome rearrangements were observed upon comparison of the C. gattii and the C. neoformans genomes. Finally, CGH revealed considerable variation in clinical and environmental isolates as well as changes in chromosome copy numbers in C. gattii isolates displaying fluconazole heteroresistance. IMPORTANCE Isolates of Cryptococcus gattii are currently causing an outbreak of cryptococcosis in western North America, and most of the cases occurred in the absence of coinfection with HIV. This pattern is therefore in stark contrast to the current global burden of one million annual cases of cryptococcosis, caused by the related species Cryptococcus neoformans, in the HIV/AIDS population. Here we use time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to show that CISS strongly influences the spin dynamics of isolated covalent donor-chiral bridge-acceptor (D-B$\chi$-A) molecules in which selective photoexcitation of D is followed by two rapid, sequential electron transfer events to yield D$^+$-B$\chi$-A$^-$. Exploiting this phenomenon affords the possibility of using chiral molecular building blocks to control electron spin states in quantum information applications.

Transient chiral dynamics revealed by two-dimensional circular dichroism spectroscopy

Abstract:Chirality has been considered as one of the key factors in the evolution of life in nature. It is important to uncover how chiral potentials of molecular systems play vital role in fundamental photochemical processes. Here, we investigate the role of chirality in photoinduced energy transfer in a model dimeric system, where the monomers are excitonically coupled. To observe transient chiral dynamics and energy transfer, we employ circularly polarized laser pulses in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to construct the two-dimensional circular dichroism (2DCD) spectral maps. Tracking time-resolved peak magnitudes in 2DCD spectra allows one to identify chirality induced population dynamics. The dynamics of energy transfer is revealed by the time-resolved kinetics of cross peaks. However, the differential signal of 2DCD spectra shows the magnitude of cross peaks is dramatically reduced at initial waiting time, which indicates the weak chiral interactions between two monomers. The downhill energy transfer is resolved by presenting a strong magnitude of cross peak in 2DCD spectra after long waiting time. The chiral contribution towards coherent and incoherent energy-transfer pathways in the model dimer system is further examined via control of excitonic couplings between two monomers. Applications are made to study the energy-transfer process in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex. Our work uncovers the potential of 2DCD spectroscopy to resolve the chiral-induced interactions and population transfers in excitonically coupled systems.
