Abstract:Photoionization of randomly oriented chiral molecules with circularly polarized light leads to a strong forward/backward asymmetry in the photoelectron angular distribution. This chiroptical effect, referred to as Photoelectron Circular Dichroism (PECD), was shown to take place in all ionization regimes, from single photon to tunnel ionization. In the Resonance Enhanced Multiphoton Ionisation (REMPI) regime, where most of the table-top PECD experiments have been performed, understanding the role of the intermediate resonances is currently the subject of experimental and theoretical investigations. In an attempt to decouple the role of bound-bound and bound-continuum transitions in REMPI-PECD, we photoionized the (+)-limonene enantiomer using two-color laser fields in [1+1'] and [2+2'] ionization schemes, where the polarization state of each color can be controlled independently. We demonstrate that the main effect of the bound-bound transition is to break the sample isotropy by orientation-dependent photoexcitation, in agreement with recent theoretical pre- dictions. We show that the angular distribution of PECD strongly depends on the anisotropy of photoexcitation to the intermediate state, which is different for circularly and linearly polarized laser pulses. On the contrary, the helicity of the pulse that drives the bound-bound transition is shown to have a negligible effect on the PECD.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to explore the influence of laser pulses in different polarization states on photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) during the resonance - enhanced multi - photon ionization (REMPI) process. Specifically, the author studies the roles of bound - bound and bound - continuum transitions in PECD by using a two - color laser field and independently controlling the polarization state of each color. #### Background and motivation 1. **Basic concepts of PECD**: - Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a chiral optical effect. When chiral molecules are photoionized by circularly polarized light, the angular distribution of photoelectrons will show obvious front/back asymmetry. - PECD can be observed in all ionization mechanisms from single - photon to tunneling ionization, and its intensity is much greater than that of traditional chiral optical effects. 2. **Existing research**: - Most existing PECD experiments focus on single - photon ionization and resonance - enhanced multi - photon ionization (REMPI) mechanisms. - In the REMPI mechanism, the role of the intermediate resonant state is an important research topic, and there are still experimental and theoretical controversies at present. 3. **Research objectives**: - Decouple the roles of bound - bound and bound - continuum transitions in REMPI - PECD by experimental means. - Pay special attention to the influence of laser pulses in different polarization states on PECD to verify theoretical predictions. #### Experimental design 1. **Experimental objects**: - Use (+)-limonene as the research object. 2. **Experimental methods**: - Use a two - color laser field and conduct experiments in the [1 + 1'] and [2 + 2'] ionization schemes respectively. - Control the polarization state of each color of laser pulse, including linear polarization and circular polarization. 3. **Experimental devices**: - Use a self - built Ti:Sapphire laser system to generate laser pulses with different wavelengths and energies. - Collect photoelectron images through a velocity - mapping imaging spectrometer (VMI). #### Main findings 1. **Influence of bound - bound transitions**: - The experimental results show that the main role of bound - bound transitions is to break the isotropy of the sample through direction - dependent photo - excitation. - This result is consistent with recent theoretical predictions. 2. **Influence of polarization states**: - Using linearly polarized light to drive bound - bound transitions and then using circularly polarized light for ionization, obvious PECD can be observed. - Conversely, using circularly polarized light to drive bound - bound transitions and then using linearly polarized light for ionization will lead to a completely symmetric angular distribution of photoelectrons (i.e., no PECD). 3. **Comparison of different ionization schemes**: - In the [1 + 1'] and [2 + 2'] ionization schemes, the intensity and sign of PECD show significant differences. - These differences are mainly attributed to the changes in sample anisotropy caused by the photo - excitation process in different polarization states. ### Conclusion The different roles of bound - bound and bound - continuum transitions in REMPI - PECD have been verified by experiments. The research results not only deepen the understanding of the PECD mechanism but also provide new experimental methods and technical means for future chiral molecular dynamics research.
