Abstract:For the past couple of years from February 1993 to February 1995, Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway Public Corp. had implemented the improvement work to squeeze the third traffic lane out over a length of 350 meter from Kyobashi Interchange to Takaracho On-Ramp at Anti-Clockwise Inner Circular Metropolitan Route.During the construction, the structure of Takaracho On-Ramp was changed into a pile-vent type viaduct to be connected with several T-shaped piers by a main box girder. The design of the connection between a steel pier and a cast-in-place pile with mannual excavation, however, was hard because a conventional anchor-frame could not be installed within the concrete of the pile due to the restriction of the pile size at the narrow construction site. Thus, it is proposed that main reinforcing bars of a cast-in-place pile themselves be used as anchor-bolts and that a base plate at the bottom of a steel pier be secured by both top and bottom bolt nuts. To examine the strength of this connection, ultimate strength tests were carried out considering the rigidity of a base plate and eccentricity of a steel pier due to the erection error. As a result, this new type of connection has been assured to satisfy the structural requirements.
