Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the knowledge and perceptions of 145 teachers from three regions in Ghana regarding inclusive education. The results show that the teachers have moderate knowledge of inclusive education practices and processes. Additionally, slight moderate positive relationships were found between participants’ level of training in inclusive education and their knowledge of inclusive education. From the findings, we argue for stakeholders in teacher education to, as a matter of necessity, reconsider the curriculum and practicum for preparing special and general educators to focus on inclusive practices to effectively prepare pre-service teachers to succeed in inclusive settings. There is also a school leadership imperative, in view of site-specific challenges and needs, to influence school-based strategies to advance inclusionary practices. Successes of such initiatives could be replicated in other schools to advance inclusive education in Ghana. Implications of the study for teacher professional development and inclusive education practice in pre-tertiary educational institutions are underscored.

Training primary school teachers for literature teaching: A view from Botswana

Abstract:Primary school level is where the love for reading and understanding of literature starts, and for teachers to succeed in the teaching of reading and literature, they need to display certain habits and practices in their English as a second language (ESL) classrooms. One of the habits is reading extensively and developing a passion for reading. In this study, the impact of the in-service training of a specific group of primary school teachers in Botswana was explored by means of questionnaires and interviews. This was done to investigate the strategies employed by these teachers in terms of their content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) as they teach literature to Standards 1 to 7 ESL pupils. The results from the questionnaires and the interviews allowed us to determine the start of problems with literature teaching. The questionnaire data gave an overview of the reading culture that prevailed in this case, and the interviews made it possible to enhance the picture provided in the questionnaires. This study revealed that the in-service teacher trainees lacked the requisite habits and practices required of a teacher of literature. We therefore argue that these teachers would fail to translate literary concepts into PCK because they had not gained any experience in analysing and evaluating full literary texts during their own schooling or teacher training.

Abstract:This study examined teachers’ training towards implementation of inclusive education in public primary schools in Dodoma Region. The study was focused on examining teachers’ training towards the implementation of inclusive education in Public Primary schools in Dodoma region. The study was grounded in Theory of Justice pioneered by John Rawls and was be guided by one research question. The study employed convergent design under mixed approach. Both probability and non-probability sampling techniques was used to sample respondents. Purposive and stratified sampling techniques followed by simple random sampling technique were used to get the respondents. The target population involved 08 DEO’s, 13 head teachers, 280 teachers and 11,460 pupils. Probability and non-probability sampling procedures were employed to determine the study sample of 12 schools, 07 DEO’s, 12 head teachers, 84 teachers and 386 pupils, making a total of 489 respondents. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaires and interview guides. Reliability of the questionnaire was tested by using Cronbach Alpha formula; while conformability of qualitative data was ensured by increasing transparency with regards to adherence to data collection procedures and ethics. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0. The quantitative data were coded and analyzed through frequencies, percentages, and mean scores in tables and interpreted in relation to research questions. The qualitative data were analyzed by coding contents into themes, interpreting direct quotations and presented in narrative form. The findings revealed that, government primary school teachers need to be involved in long-term pre-service training in special needs education to be equipped with knowledge and skills regarding teaching and learning strategies and inclusive classroom management. The study concluded that, special education training in inclusive education practices is essential element to enhance teachers’ preparedness to work with special needs pupils as well as enhances their effectiveness in implementing classroom practices, which is a contributing factor to success in inclusive education. The study recommended that Ministry of Education, Science and Technology should organize seminars, workshops and in-service training courses to enhance teachers’ effectiveness in implementation of inclusive education.

Abstract:This chapter examines recent “reform” efforts in teacher education around the world. There are three main sections. First, we identify eight types of reform policies and initiatives. These include: establishing standards and minimum requirements for teacher education; making teacher education more “research-based”; making pre-service programmes more “accountable”; allowing alternative routes into teaching; placing greater emphasis on subject knowledge; and increasing school involvement in teacher education. Second, we provide case studies of four countries – England, the U.S., Singapore, and Canada – that have rather distinctive approaches to teacher education reform. Third, we discuss where we should be going in teacher education reform, showing the limitations and weaknesses of some of the recent initiatives and suggesting ways to enhance teacher education reform.

Abstract:This article describes teacher education in jurisdictions around the world that have well-developed systems for teacher development. It examines teacher education policies and practices in Australia (with a focus on Victoria and New South Wales), Canada (with a focus on Alberta and Ontario), Finland and Singapore within the context of recruitment, preparation, induction, ongoing professional development and collective improvement of practice. It compares these practices with those in the United States, and evaluates challenges countries face in transforming their teacher development systems.

Abstract:The impetus of this study was to unpack teachers’ knowledge and use of indoctrinatory practices in the teaching of Christian Religious Studies in mission schools in the Central Region of Ghana. The study used the concurrent parallel design of the mixed-methods research approach. The population for the study was all CRS teachers from mission schools in the Central Region. The census method was used to get all the 39 teachers of CRS in the schools. The instruments for data assembling were a questionnaire and an observation guide. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was used to analyse the data. Mission school CRS teachers were found to have moderate knowledge of what indoctrination is. They engaged in indoctrinatory practices at a lower extent when teaching CRS. There was no significant difference (t (37) =-.017, p=.987) in CRS teachers’ participation in indoctrinatory practices based on their religious backgrounds. It was consequently recommended that the Central Regional Office of Ghana Education Service (GES) should organise in-service training workshops and seminars for teachers to deepen their understanding of the meaning and consequences of indoctrination. Furthermore, the Ghana Education Service should encourage teachers to desist from any form of indoctrination during the teaching of CRS.

Abstract:The pursuit of effective and quality education leads the Ivorian government to put in place strategies to improve the school context; the initial teaching method, the competency-based approach (APC) has evolved to become the reframed competency-based approach (APCR). Schools, for their part, will benefit from overall sanitation for their rehabilitation and the recruitment of teachers will be more selective. However, it is clear that despite these efforts, the academic level of students does not improve much. The recent evaluation of the CONFEMEN 2019 Education Systems Analysis Program demonstrates the delay accumulated by Ivorian students. This article therefore questions the effect of the teaching method as well as schooling conditions on the acquisition of academic skills among primary school learners. The use of a quantitative research method as well as second source documents made a significant contribution to the study. The analysis of the results indicated that the teaching method and study conditions have a major impact on learner results. In conducting our reflection, we will use a hierarchical linear model which is an extension of classic regression methods offering the possibility of capturing the information integrated in each of the learners' contexts of existence. This article is of capital importance insofar as it allows decision-makers to have a basis with a view to improving study conditions in Cote d'Ivoire.

Abstract:Value Based Education (VBE) is an essential element that impacts moral, ethical, cultural, social and spiritual ideals necessary for holistic development of children. Providing an education on values at an early age ensures that children are directed by these ideologies throughout life. Research indicates that children who adopt values at an early age are confident, competent, independent, and exhibit harmonious social interactions throughout life time. Conversely, increase in juvenile delinquency, disrespect, drug abuse, school dropout, and conflicts in schools creates crisis in contemporary society. In such circumstances, VBE assumes a distinctive role to school deterioration process by strengthening morals and ethics within the society. The study explored influence of preschool teachers in spurring VBE among preschool children in Nairobi County focusing on; self control honesty, fairness, compassion and trust. A survey design was adopted with a target population of 36 public preschools. Purposeful sampling technique was then used to obtain data from 36 preschool teachers though use of a questionnaire. The study established that though teachers inculcate values to children both consciously and unconsciously, there is no planned value education program established on formal learning. The study recommends; regular training of teachers on use of VBE to deliberately foster intercultural understanding, social cohesion and inclusion, as well as need for value oriented programmes focusing on effective pedagogy.

Abstract:As secondary education globally continues to evolve, teachers are confronted with the ongoing challenge of integrating instructional strategies that best suit the interests of 21st-century students. In navigating this educational shift and trying to enhance the learning experiences of students in contemporary classrooms, team teaching has emerged as a pedagogical approach that fosters collaboration among educators. This qualitative case study investigated teachers' perspectives on implementing team teaching in a secondary school setting in Lesotho. Guided by Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, the study explored two primary research questions: (1) What are the teachers’ beliefs/attitudes towards team teaching instructional strategy? (2) What are the factors that contribute to teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness and feasibility of team teaching? A purposive sample of eight teachers participated in the study. Findings revealed that teachers hold positive attitudes towards the implementation of team teaching, citing benefits such as student engagement, effective differentiated instruction, and improved academic performance among others. Moreover, factors contributing to teachers' perceptions of team teaching effectiveness included collaboration, team spirit, trust, and administrative support. The study recommends Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to equip teachers with the necessary skills and strategies for effective team teaching and the researchers also recommend implementing mechanisms for ongoing evaluation and feedback to assess the effectiveness of team teaching initiatives.

Abstract:The basis of inclusive education is not only related to equal human rights, but also as a means to improve and achieve quality education for all. In this respect, teachers play an important role in the successful implementation of inclusive education. However, some research has shown that teachers have inadequate knowledge, skills, and training to implement inclusive education. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of teachers’ experiences in the implementation of inclusive education at a school in Malé, Maldives, including challenges faced. The study was guided by both the principles of constructivist theory and ecological theory to unveil these challenges. To attain the objectives of the study, related literature on international policies and concepts of inclusive education was reviewed in detail. Adopting a qualitative approach, data was also collected through interviews and observations with nine teachers who were selected purposefully. The data gathered from the field was analysed and described in a narrative form. Findings support the importance of teacher training, appropriate teacher-student ratio, proper resources, and an effective monitoring system for the successful implementation of inclusive education.

Abstract:Similar to its influence on other spheres of life, globalisation is changing the teaching and learning context, causing universities to explore new curriculum formats that may offer better fit with diverse student learning needs. One such format in the intensive mode delivery (IMD) category is the block – release part – time degrees programme, which comprises conventional traditional approaches and open and distance learning aspects. This case study sought to find out if the Bachelor of Education (BED) Degrees block release part – time programme offered in Zimbabwe by University R at Teachers’ College M as a centre, was developing desired teacher competences. Through structured interviews, data were collected from teacher educators and in – service teachers / teacher candidates in the programme. Coding and data reduction cumulated into themes upon which interpretation was based. Findings show that the BED block release part – time programme is a viable option which equips in – service teachers with degree qualifications for effective secondary school teaching and learning. However participants raised concerns about lack of time for them to develop competences in using learner – centred strategies. Teacher educators’ modelling of application of learner – centred teaching and learning strategies and teaching and learning media were identified as empowering in developing desired competences for in – service teachers to facilitate learning of diverse learners. However, based on findings, it is recommended that textbooks, time and teaching and learning media which currently lack, should be made available in the block release part – time degrees programme at University R centres, to ensure that in – service teachers are fully prepared to facilitate learning, through learner – centred strategies.

Abstract:The research aims to identify the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the preschool teachers of the target group regarding the implementation/development of inclusive education. Structure/methodology /approach-10 teachers participated in this study, who were also involved in the research carried out within the framework of the project "teacher reflection for quality early inclusive education". An early inclusive education environment self-reflection method was used, developed within the framework of the early childhood inclusive education (I) project implemented by the European agency for special needs and inclusive education from 2015 to 2017 (www.european-agency.org/agency-projects/inclusive-early childhood-education), our adapted version. Research is qualitative. The reflection method included four open questions: This article reflects educators on the "inclusive environment of teaching and learning". Conclusion: the survey participants ' responses prove that educators and educators are aware of the desire and need to increase their knowledge about the inclusive environment of learning and teaching, but they find it difficult to reflect on these issues and analyze them based on their practice, which can again be considered as their low competence in this regards. Novelty/value: the study of teacher-educator reflection is not conducted on the example of our practice.

Abstract:Concerns have been raised about the quality of religious and moral education textbooks used in upper primary school classes in Botswana. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to assess the appropriateness of these textbooks. The study adopted a qualitative methodology approach, using interviews and also reviewing some documents. Data collected from the study suggest that the content of the prescribed religious and moral education textbooks in the upper primary school curriculum does not address the prescribed syllabus objectives, hence affects the teachers’ classroom practices and consequently students’ learning and performance. Based on these findings, the study, therefore, recommends the involvement of teachers in the selection of the prescribed textbooks for religious and moral education in upper primary schools classes.

It is therefore essential to propose an analysis of the prospects for the development of early childhood education in the coming years. This article deals in the first instance with the international infatuation for pre-primary education based on both scientific evidence and also international agendas. It then explores the possibilities of putting forward a coherent African response to global demands concerning early childhood education and promoting the inclusion of local cultural content in designing pre-primary educational structures. Finally, the article suggests some principles that might guide international cooperation activities affecting the early childhood sector.

Abstract:The theme of reconciliation permeates this text, as educating for a better future involves two critical elements: teaching all Australians to understand, respect and appreciate Indigenous history and culture; and effectively teaching Indigenous students so that they attain educational and life outcomes commensurate to their non-Indigenous peers. Reconciliation Australia suggests that 'a key objective for the reconciliation process is to improve the knowledge and understanding of Australians about how they can be involved and help to overcome Indigenous disadvantage'. Clearly, the role of teachers is vital to the success of the reconciliation process. Reconciliation Australia also produces a quarterly newsletter, which provides regular updated information on the process of reconciliation, and includes articles on what schools around the country are doing to contribute to the process. Teachers have a vital role to play in contributing to the reconciliation process. The role involves teaching for reconciliation and educating for the future rather than just teaching the current state of play.
