Abstract:Themal oxidation behaviour of Ti6Al7Nb and Ti6Al4V alloys in air at 600-900 ℃ for 0.5-72 h was investigated.The oxidation kinetics of the alloys was examined by weight gain curves.Composition and valence state of the surface oxide film were investigated by means of XRD and XPS.The results show that Ti6Al7Nb alloy exhibits higher resistance to thermal oxidation as compared to Ti6Al4V alloy.The value of oxidation rate constant for Ti6Al7Nb alloy is lower under the same oxidation conditions.The surface oxide film of specimens oxidized for 1 h only contains cations with the highest or most stable valences,and Al and V elements are enriched in the oxide film,while Nb element is deficient.The surfaces of both Ti6Al7Nb and Ti6Al4V alloys are mainly covered by R-TiO2.Al2 O3 is only detected in the surface oxide film of Ti6Al4V alloy oxidized at 900 ℃.
Oxidation Mechanism of Three Fe-Al Alloys with and Without Addition of 0.1 At% Yttrium at 800 °C

Abstract:The isothermal oxidation behavior of Fe-10Al, Fe-15Al, Fe-20Al alloys with and without the addition of 0.1 at% Y was studied at 800 degrees C under 1 x 10(5) Pa of flowing pure O-2 for 24 h. The oxidation of three Fe-Al alloys can be divided into transient state and steady state oxidation stages. The oxidation of each stage is approximately in accordance with the parabolic law. The addition of 0.1 at% Y changes the oxidation behavior obviously and leads to a significant increase of the weight gain of Fe-10Al and Fe-15Al. The scale grown on Fe-10Al is much thicker and more complicated than that grown on Fe-20Al, which is composed of an exclusive thin layer of Al2O3 protective film. Due to the formation of a large number of nodules, the scales grown on Fe-15Al cannot provide full protection for the alloy. Scale microstructure of the three Fe-Al-0.1Y alloys is similar to their corresponding Fe-Al alloys. However, nodules with very small size still appear on the surface of Fe-20Al-0.1Y alloy. The critical Al concentration to form an exclusive Al2O3 protective layer for Fe-Al binary alloy is on the borderline between 15 at%-20 at%. For Fe-Al-0.1Y alloy, the presence of 20 at% Al is not enough to inhibit the growth of nodules. (C) 2020 Chinese Society of Rare Earths. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To improve the oxidation resistance of Fe-Ni alloy,50Fe-40Ni-10Al alloy was prepared.The high temperature oxidation behavior in air atmosphere at 900 ℃ was studied.The oxide film was characterized by XRD,SEM,and EDS.Experimental results show that the parabola rule is followed during oxidation with the parabola constant of 2.714×10-2mg 2/(cm 4·h).After an initial stage of fast reaction,this alloy is able to develop a continuous layer of alumina at the base of the scale,which prevents the oxidation of aluminum and that of other components,thus reduces the oxidation rate greatly.Most of the oxides are Fe_2O_3 and Fe_3O_4,small amount of those are Al_2O_3 and AlFe_2O_4 spinel.The content of Al_2O_3in oxidation scale goes up during oxidation,when Fe_2O_3 and Al_2O_3 form solid solution.The prepared alloy has excellent oxidation resistance to be suitable for inert anode material.
Oxidation behavior of high Hf nickel-based superalloy in air at 900, 1000 and 1100°C

Abstract:To investigate the oxidation behavior of a nickel-based superalloy with high hafnium content (1.34wt%), this study performed isothermal oxidation tests at 900, 1000, and 1100°C for up to 200 h. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were applied to study the oxidation behavior. The weight gain of the high Hf nickel-based superalloy exhibited a parabolalike curve, and no spallation of the oxide scale was observed during the oxidation tests. The alloy presented excellent oxidation resistance, and no HfO2 was observed in the oxide scale at 900°C. With the increase of the oxidation temperature to 1000°C, HfO2 particles formed in the spinel phases of the scale, and “peg-like” HfO2 was observed within and beneath the inner layer of Al2O3 after 200 h. As the oxidation temperature rose to 1100°C, “peg-like” HfO2 was observed at the early stage of the oxidation test (within 25 h). The formation mechanism of HfO2 and its impact on oxidation resistance were investigated based on the analysis of the oxidation test results at different temperatures.

Abstract:The oxidation of an equimolar FeCoNiAl medium-entropy alloy was studied at 900 °C in various O 2 -containing atmospheres over the oxygen pressure range of 10–10 5 Pa. The alloy oxidized parabolically, having its oxidation rates steadily increasing with oxygen pressure. Duplex scales formed on the oxidized substrate, consisting of an outer CoFe 2 O 4 layer and an inner α-Al 2 O 3 layer. The position of the Pt-marker was located at the outer- and inner-layer boundary, demonstrating that the outward cation diffusion controlled the formation of CoFe 2 O 4 , while the growth of Al 2 O 3 was contributed by the inward oxygen diffusion.

Abstract:Oxidation behavior of Al8Cr13.3Fe63.5Ni11.2Ti4 complex concentrated alloy was studied in the air at 800 degrees C. Results show that the oxidation kinetics does not obey a parabola relationship. The oxidation process was divided into two distinct stages, transforming from an approximately parabolic law to a quasi-linear law at 10 h. This alloy exhibits excellent oxidation resistance with only 0.41 mg/cm2 of specific mass gain after 100 h oxidation, ascribed to the compact outer CrTi2O5 +TiO2 and inner Cr2O3 +nano-scale CrTi2O5 oxide layers. However, this oxide scale does not prevent the N from diffusion inward, forming the TiN and AlN in internal oxidation zone.

Abstract:The oxidation behavior of a nickel-based superalloy GH738 was studied by isothermal oxidation tests in still air at different temperatures, with exposure time up to 100 h. Oxidation-kinetic curves were plotted using the mass gain method. The surface and cross-sectional morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A composition analysis and an oxidation-product identification were conducted using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and an X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The results showed that GH738 exhibited parabolic oxidation-kinetic curves, with stable parabolic-rate constants at each temperatures. The activation energy of oxide growth was calculated to be 329.6 kJ·mol−1. Cr2O3 (chromia) was the external oxidation product at 800 °C. A TiO2–Cr2O3 double-layer structure was formed at 900 °C. The position of TiO2 changed from the oxide–metal interface to the air–oxide interface by the diffusion of Ti atoms in chromia during the oxidation time at this temperature. Spallation was observed in the Cr0.12Ti0.78O1.74–Cr2O3 multi-layer oxide of at 1000 °C, which increased the oxidation rate. For all the tests, the main internal oxide was always Al2O3. The entire GH738 oxidation process was interpreted by the competitive diffusion of elements (Cr, Ti, Ni, etc.) in metal matrix and chromia, while a schematic diagram of oxidation process was proposed.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:The oxidation behavior of a single crystal superalloy at 900℃and 1000℃in air was investigated by using discontinuous thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).The oxidized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results showed the oxidation kinetics of the alloy at 900℃and 1000℃followed parabolic law basically.The oxidation resistance of the alloy at 900℃and 1000℃was the first grade,while the rate of oxidation at 1000℃was higher than that at 900℃.The oxidation scales were composed of(Ni,Co)O prevalently.However,α-Al_2O_3,less Cr_2O_3 and complex oxides, such as CrTaO_4,(Ni,Co)Al_2O_4 and Co(Al,Cr)_2O_4 were found in the oxidation scales.The scales were layered with outer(Ni,Co)O layer and innerα-Al_2O_3 layer.The innerα-Al_2O_3 layer was continuous and dense and then provided good protection.Furthermore,there were nitride precipitates in the matrix of the alloy and close to theα-Al_2O_3 layer.

Abstract:The oxidation behavior of a nickel-based single crystal superalloy at 1100 °C under three different oxygen concentrations (10%/21%/30%) was studied. The results showed that the ambient oxygen concentrations had a significant effect on the oxidation rate and oxide layered structures of the tested alloy. With the increase of oxygen concentration, the oxidation rate of the test alloy increased significantly, and the parabolic oxidation rate constants obtained by fitting had a linear relationship with the oxygen concentrations. At 10% and 21% oxygen concentration, Al2O3 was formed on the sample surfaces with the increase of oxidation time, while at 30% oxygen concentration, a typical three-layer oxide layered structure—outer (Ni, Co)O, middle complex oxides with spinel phase structure, and inner Al2O3—was formed. In addition, the causes of oxide scale spalling, the influence of oxygen concentrations on different oxide layered structures, and the oxidation mechanism based on ionic diffusion were discussed in detail.

Abstract:Hot-rolled Fe-(0.75–2.20)Si (mass%) alloys were oxidized in dry air at 600–1200 °C. The oxidation process was carried out by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). At 600–1150 °C, oxidation gain curves were approximately parabolic. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) was applied to investigate cross-section morphology of oxide layer and element distribution across the layer. At lower temperature of 700 °C, the oxide layer consisted of internal oxidation zone (IOZ), inner Si-rich layer (conglomerate of fayalite and magnetite) and outer hematite layer, while at higher temperature of 1200 °C, fayalite and wustite were observed in external oxide scale. Liquidus temperature of fayalite was detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Through comparing the oxidation mass gain and parabolic rate constant of the alloys, it was found that oxidation resistance of Fe-Si alloy was enhanced by increasing Si content below 1150 °C while increasing Si content of the alloy resulted in higher oxidation rate above 1150 °C owing to the liquid fayalite formation.

Abstract:High temperature oxidation of TiC ceramic matrix Fe40Al and Ni3Al toughened composites (Fe40Al/TiC, Ni3Al/TiC) of different TiC contents, made by pressureless melt infiltration, was investigated. Oxidation experiments were conducted in air for up to 65 hours at 700-1100°C. Weight gains of the composites showed that Fe40Al/TiC is more oxidation resistant than Ni3Al/TiC ones. SEM/EDS and X-ray diffraction showed that the dense oxidation layers of the two types of composites are mainly composed of crystalline TiO2. The growth of the oxidation layer follows parabolic passive oxidation kinetics, the calculated values of the activation energy of the oxidation mechanism being 270-280kJ.mol-1 and 240-250kJ.mol-1 for Fe40Al/TiC and Ni3Al/TiC, respectively. Al2O3 and Ni-rich phases were also detected in the oxidation layer of Fe40Al/TiC and Ni3Al/TiC, respectively.

Abstract:Microstructural evolution and isothermal oxidation behavior of a cast Ni-based superalloy have been investigated at 800 °C, 900 °C and 1000 °C in air. Results show that the oxidation kinetics of the Ni-based superalloy follows parabolic law at elevated temperatures. Oxide scales after oxidation can be divided into external layer, continuous Cr2O3 layer linked with internal TiO2, discontinuous Al2O3 layer and γ′-depletion zone. Due to the segregation of alloying elements, densely granular zone and porous zone are formed at 800 °C. External oxide layer is a mixed oxides zone, which mainly consists of TiO2 and Cr2O3 at 800 °C and 900 °C, NiO and NiCr2O4 at 1000 °C. The formation condition of NiO and NiCr2O4 is mainly after 50 h oxidized at 1000 °C. Thickness growth rate of Cr2O3 and Al2O3 layers decrease gradually during oxidation process, indicating that external oxides can effectively prevent the inward diffusion of oxygen. The oxidation activation energy of the experimental Ni-based superalloy is confirmed to be 205.3 kJ mol−1 and the oxidation process is controlled by diffusion of oxygen, Ti and Cr ions.

Abstract:The isothermal oxidation of a new Fe-Ni-Cr-based alloy has been investigated in pure steam at 750 degrees C for exposure time up to 500h using secondary electron microscope (SEM)/ X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Results showed that the alloy was oxidized approximately following a parabolic law with a parabolic rate constant k(p) of 2.36 x 10(-13) g(2)/m(4)/s. As revealed by SEM/EDS and XRD results, a duplex-layered external oxide scale was formed, consisting of a thin outer layer of Ni(Fe, Al)(2)O-4 and a thicker inner layer of (Cr, Mn)(2)O-3. Underneath the external oxide scale, the internal oxidation of Ti to be TiO2 occurred particularly along the grain boundaries of the matrix alloy. Internal oxide of Al2O3 was also observed but at a deeper depth. Based on the detailed compositional and microstructural characterization of the oxidized zone, the mechanism of the external and internal oxidation in steam is presented.
Oxidation Behaviors of FeCrNiAl High Entropy Alloy and Its Microstructure Evolution

Abstract:The oxidation behaviors of FeCrNiAl high entropy alloy at high temperature were investigated, and the oxidation kinetics model was constructed. The phase structure, morphology and composition of the alloy were characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS, and the oxidation mechanisms were analyzed. The results show that the alloy is fully oxidation-resistant at 800 similar to 1000 degrees C. The average oxidation rate in 100 h increases with increasing temperature at first and then decreases; it at 1000 degrees C is smaller than the one at 800 degrees C. The relationship between mass increment and oxidation time for all temperatures meets the parabola function, and the oxidation active energy is calculated to be 167.507 kJ/mol. The oxidation products in dendrite at 800 degrees C are bar-shaped TiO2 with rutile structure, while the interdendritic products are Cr2O3 and TiO2 which is plate shaped. The oxidation products at 900 degrees C are TiO2, Cr2O3 and Fe2O3, while TiO2 and alpha-Al2O3 at 950 degrees C are observed. Only tight alpha-Al2O3 film is obtained on the surface at 1000 degrees C, which results in excellent oxidation resistance.

Abstract:The high-temperature oxidation behavior of Fe-5wt% Cr alloys was investigated in both N 2 +5vol% H 2 O and N 2 +21vol% O 2 +5vol% H 2 O atmospheres at 900–1000 °C for 120 min by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The oxidation kinetics, phase composition and cross-sectional microstructure of the oxide scale were contrastively analyzed in both environments. Also, the phase composition of oxide scale was measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The cross-sectional microstructure and the interface elements distribution were studied by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The experimental results demonstrated that the growth rate and the mass gain of the oxide scale in the N 2 +5vol% H 2 O atmosphere were both significantly lower than the growth rate and the mass gain in the N 2 +21vol% O 2 +5vol% H 2 O atmosphere. The apparent layer structure of the oxide scale could be observed in an oxygen-enriched environment and did not appear in a pure water vapor without oxygen. In addition, the inner oxide layer growth mechanisms and the outward diffusion of the metal cations were introduced in the atmosphere of N 2 +5vol% H 2 O. Consequently, the effects of temperature and humid atmosphere on the Fe-Cr spinal scale evolution were also discussed.
Oxidation of a 4 wt.% Hf-containing nickel-based alloy at temperatures ranging from 1100°C to 1250°C in air

Abstract:The needs of metallic alloys able to work at elevated temperatures in severe conditions of applied mechanical stresses and chemical aggressivity of the environment is increasing more and more. For service temperatures equal to, or higher than, 1100°C, new superalloys must developed because of the loss in strengthening particles known by g/g ’ single crystals at so high temperatures, or the difficult availability of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened superalloys for geometrically complex hot components. Traditional metallurgical solutions are still a source of new superalloys development if innovative phases can be obtained in the microstructures. Carbides with complex constitutions represent a possible long-lasting strengthening system in cast polycrystalline alloys which are the most adapted alloys to produce coarse–grained complex pieces. In this work this is the (Hf, Ta) C strengthening system in a chromia–forming austenitic nickel–based matrix which was under interest. Interesting creep resistance at high temperature (e.g. 1100°C) were recently observed. In order to evaluate the chemical resistance at the same temperature for this type of materials, the same alloy was here exposed to synthetic air at 1100°C during 50 h in a thermobalance, followed by the post–mortem characterization of the oxidized states. To explore its oxidation resistance to more elevated temperatures this test was carried out 2 times more, at 1200°C and 1250°C. For these three temperatures this alloy well behaved in hot oxidation was good: chromia–forming behavior, rather slow oxidation kinetics and acceptable resistance against oxide scale spallation when cooling.

Nonlinear Oxidation Behavior in Pure Ni and Ni-Containing Entropic Alloys

Abstract:We performed a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the oxidation behavior of pure Ni and of the following multi-component Ni-containing alloys with nearly equiatomic compositions: FeNi, CoFeNi, CoCrFeNi, and CoCrFeMnNi. The materials were exposed to air at ambient pressure and at a temperature of 800°C for 150 minutes, their weight-gain due to oxidation was continuously monitored and the products of oxidation were subsequently characterized by XRD. The most common oxides formed have spinel or halite structure and the materials resistance to oxidation increases as: FeNi < CoFeNi < Ni < CoCrFeMnNi < CoCrFeNi. We found further that the oxidation-resistance of the materials does not correlate linearly with the number of elements present, instead the type of elements impacts significantly the materials susceptibility to oxidative damage. Cr is the element that imparted higher resistance to oxidation while Mn and Fe worsened the materials performance. In order to better understand the mechanisms of oxidation we employed thermodynamic equilibrium calculations and predicted the phase stability of oxides of the elements that are present in the materials, in different ranges of temperature, composition and oxygen activity. Additionally, we determined the phase compositions for the thermodynamically stable oxides at 800°C. The results from the thermodynamic modelling are in good agreement with the experimental finds. The alloys with low resistance to oxidation such as CoFeNi and FeNi, form the Fe3O4 spinel phase which tends to dominate the phase diagram for these materials. The presence of Cr increases the resistance to atomic rearrangement due to slow diffusion in the complex structure of Cr containing spinel phases. This causes the extremely high resistance to oxidation of the CoCrFeNi alloy. The presence of Mn in CoCrFeNi stabilizes the Mn3O4 spinel which reduces the oxidation-resistance of the alloys due to the high mobility of Mn.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of Fe–25Ni–20Cr–xAl-based alloys under low oxygen pressure was studied to improve oxidation and coking resistance. The morphology and oxidation kinetics of the oxide layer were analyzed using multi-scale techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated that when the Al content exceeded 2.5 wt%, a duplex-structure oxide film, mainly consisting of M2O3 (M: Al and Cr) outer and Al2O3 inner layer, was formed on the surface of the alloy after pre-oxidation. When the Al content exceeded 8 wt%, a complete and dense Al2O3 external oxide film was formed through a two-step oxidation process. The decrease in oxygen partial pressure and surface enrichment of aluminum during the pre-oxidation process accelerated the formation of an external Al2O3 oxide film. Therefore, it isolated the catalytic coking reaction of Fe and Ni transition metals in the alloy with the pyrolysis atmosphere, significantly improving the anti-coking performance of the alloy.
