Abstract:&#160;Razavi Khorasan Province in the northeast of Iran, located at the Crossroads of Eurasia, was an important point of the middle part&#160;of the Silk Road. Neyshabur Plain is situated an important&#160;transporting&#160;hub&#160;of the major&#160;thoroughfare&#160;of Eurasia. A large number of sites are distributed in the river valleys and the alluvial fans in front of the mountains. Archaeological survey was carried out in Neyshabur Plain, and more than 10 sites were discovered, which are in form of mounds of earth, named as Tape. Seen from the cultural relics on the surface, these sites were occupied by successive cultural sequences, mainly ranging from Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze to Iron Age. This appearance indicates that the climate and environment in the past was better than now. Today, the region is characterized by&#160;dry&#160;climate, and poor&#160;land&#160;resources. The land is dominated by Gobi Desert, and the wide vegetation is dominated by Camel thorn (Alhagi sparsifolia). Only in which Karez irrigation system exists, can wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare) and saffron (Crocus sativus) be cultivated, while a few orchard is present in some river valley areas.&#160;&#160;&#160;&#160;Tape Borj, which&#160;is the largest prehistoric settlement site in the east part of Neyshabur plain, Razavi Khorasan Province, NE Iran, covers an area of 13.5 ha. A total area of 110 m2&#160;was excavated in the north and northwest part of the site, and some geological survey were also conducted around the&#160;site in 2019. A total of 14 ash pits, 4 houses, 6 ovens, and one well were unearthed during the excavation. According to the AMS dates and material culture, the cultural deposits can be divided into two phases, including Chalcolithic Age during 6500 BP and 6000 BP and early Bronze Age during 5500 BP and 5000 BP. Some wheat, barley, oats (Avena sativa), and seeds of Celtis sinensis, as well as a large number of animal bones, which are dominated by sheep and goats were discovered. The results can basically reflect the economic structure and subsistence strategy of prehistoric ancestors. Geological survey indicates that two&#160;paleo river course ever went through the east and west sides of the site during the prehistoric period.&#160;In addition, some samples were systematically collected for pollen and phytolith analysis, in order to understand&#160;the paleoenvorinment and the utilization of plant resources by the ancient people at the site from the Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age. Our work can provide some precious material data for studying the evolution of the paleoenvrionment and development of agriculture and animal husbandry in this region.

Abstract:The Iranian Plateau and the Zagros Mountain chain, located at the crossroads of Africa and Eurasia, occupy a critical geographical position in out-of-Africa scenarios, sitting astride a major dispersal corridor into southern and central Asia. Yet, the region's role in human population expansions remains under-investigated. Here, we present findings from new excavations at Pebdeh Cave, a site located in the southern zone of the Zagros Mountains. Pebdeh contained a well-defined layer dating to ∼42–40,000 years ago (ka), with Levallois elements alongside laminar reduction. This transitional feature in the Zagros was not dated and recorded before, and, given its similarity to Western and Central Asian industries with respect to chronology and technological features, we define it here as the Zagros Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP). Although Late Middle Paleolithic and Early Upper Paleolithic technologies have been identified in the Zagros in the time period ranging between 50 and 40 ka, suggesting the presence of Neanderthals and modern humans in the mountainous region, the overall abrupt and constrained chronology of the IUP at Pebdeh, together with the penecontemporaneous appearance of other Upper Paleolithic sites in the Zagros Mountains, is compatible with a population expansion of Homo sapiens rather than an autochthonous development.

Faience and Egyptian Blue Frit from Khorasan: Scientific Analysis on Beads Unearthed from Se Tepe Site, Northeast Iran

Abstract:The Khorasan region, located in northeast Iran, has historically served as a pivotal hub for civilizational exchanges, owing to its strategic position along ancient trade routes. Ten beads found in the Se Tepe site (Seh Tappeh or Seh Tapeh), northeast Iran from Yaz III period (550–300 BCE) were identified as faience and Egyptian blue frit using SEM-EDS and Micro-Raman analyses. Plant ash, quartz sand, and bronze scrap as well as lead antimonate yellow colorant were used to make six faience beads. Among the faience beads, four have high alumina contents, showing the connection with vitreous materials from Central or South Asia. Four Egyptian blue frit beads are identified as imports from the Mediterranean World. This research sheds light on the technology and potential provenance of vitreous materials in Achaemenid Khorasan. The diverse origins of these beads underscore the exchange and cultural interactions facilitated along the Great Khorasan Road.
A CONSIDERATION OF EASTWARD SPREAD OF THE SAMARRAN PHENOMENON IN THE LIGHT OF NEW EVIDENCE ALONG THE ZAGROS PIEDMONT

Abstract:The Samarran phenomenon has been under discussion since the early 20 th century. Over the past several decades, increasing evidence has indicated that it was geographically distributed in a very large area across the Near East. In this regard, the eastward spread of the Samarran phenomenon across the Iranian frontier was little known, because related finds had mostly been recovered in the 1960–70s. This article highlights the discovery of new evidence in the transitional zone that connects the Zagros highlands with the Mesopotamian lowlands. During recent surveys in the plains of Mehran, Meimak, Soumar and Sarpol-e Zahab, a number of sites were found. They yielded ceramics identical with those already reported from nearby late Samarran sites such as Chogha Mami, Songor A and Rihan I. Chronologically, surface materials indicate that these newly found Iranian sites should belong to the late phase of Samarran period, coinciding with the so-called Chogha Mami Transitional (CMT). As seen from the natural setting of the sites along streams, and due to the predominance of nomadic herders in this transitional zone, we may assume that transhumant herders played a role in the eastward spread of the late Samarran phenomenon via the river valleys and that the site's inhabitants might have been familiar with a primitive irrigation system. Furthermore, it is speculated that the cold dry climatic event of 8.2 kya might have resulted in an increased intensity of population in the lowlands. Nevertheless, the subsequent climatic optimum appears to have paved the way for the eastward spread of late Samarran/CMT elements. Regardless of what was the major trigger of such an expansion, however, intensive economic interactions of societies probably played a role in the very early sixth millennium B.C., when natural raw materials such as bitumen were imported from western/southwestern Iran to central/southern Mesopotamia.

Settlement Patterns of Bronze-Age Sites of the Upper and Middle Atrak Basin in Northeastern Iran

Abstract:In archaeological studies of Southwestern Asia, during the period from the late fourth millennium BC to the beginning of the Iron Age (second half of the second millennium BC), phenomena such as growth of settlements in terms of area and population, emergence of early cities, trans-regional trade, formation of government institutions, emergence and spread of gray-and-black pottery, extensive changes in technology, dramatic development of smelting and use of bronze tools were identified. In this process, an extensive communication network aimed at controlling trade routes and access to raw materials across the plateau, by land and sea, connected many areas. Economically, remote trade was established in this period of time, various communities establishing ties with places located thousands of miles away in order to obtain their needed resources. Bronze-Age cultures are well-known in most parts of Iran, but Khorasan is an exception since the data are rare and insufficient. Moreover, information about the chronology and distribution of sites during different periods of prehistoric times in different parts of it is minimal. Thirty-eight sites from the Bronze Age have been studied in this research. These sites were identified in the archaeological surveys of the upper and middle Atrak during the last decade. This study was done using the descriptive-analytic method. GIS and SPSS software and Correlation and Cluster analysis methods were used for data analysis. The settlement pattern in the upper and middle Atrak basin is similar. It consists of two-rank models with a large main site and several small sites around it. The results of this study indicate that due to the lack of water resources in the region, access to constant water resources has been an essential factor in the shaping of Bronze-Age settlements. Most sites were also formed during the early Bronze Age, and we also faced a decrease in the number of sites in the middle and late Bronze Ages.
Contextualizing wild cereal harvesting at Middle Palaeolithic Ghar-e Boof in the southern Zagros

Abstract:A stratigraphic sequence from Ghar-e Boof, a cave site in Iran, covering a period of c. 80,000-30,000 BP and containing more than 20,000 seed and chaff remains, allows a detailed study of the use of annual seed species of Palaeolithic hunter-gatherer groups and its evolution under the influence of changing environmental conditions. Taxonomic changes in the archaeobotanical assemblage and the stable carbon isotope data of pistachio support a considerable change in environmental conditions over the sequence from MIS 5a to MIS 3. The exceptional dominance of wild ancestors of modern crop species, including glume wheat and large-seeded legumes from Middle Palaeolithic layers AH VI (OSL ranges 72-81 ka BP), coincides broadly with the transition from MIS 5a to MIS 4. With the beginning of MIS 4 these taxa are strongly reduced, corresponding with a strong decrease in global CO2 concentrations and in the Δ13C values of Pistacia khinjuk/atlantica from the site. Wild glume wheat completely disappears after Middle Palaeolithic AH Vb and never reappears at the site. We hypothesize that the Middle Palaeolithic niche that allowed the harvesting and consumption of wild cereals and legumes ended with a destabilization of the vegetation in early MIS 4.

Abstract:Northern Chah-Farsakh is the first seafloor VMS described in the Torud-Chahshirin metallogenic belt of Iran. The deposit is hosted by Neoproterozoic-Early Cambrian mafic (basaltic andesitic)-siliciclastic rocks in volcano-sedimentary basin. The evolution of the ore-bearing basin is governed by the Proto-Tethys Oceanic crust subduction beneath the Central Iranian microcontinent. Three ore facies can be distinguished based on the ore textures studies: stringer zone ore facies, massive-replacement ore facies, bedded ore and distal facies. Pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and sphalerite are the main minerals, together with minor amounts of pyrrhotite, bornite, tetrahedrite and tennantite. Textures include laminated, banded, replacement, massive, and vein-veinlet texture. There is a distinct metal zonation in the massive sulfide orebody; Gold, Ag, and Zn contents increase vertically from the stringer to the bedded ore facies; Cu and Co increase in the massive ore facies, and Pb is highest in the stringer zone. Ore mineralization in the Northern Chah-Farsakh deposit has emplaced in two stages. The fine-grained ore bands (stage 1) which are intricately interlayered with host rock beds, exhibit sedimentary structure such as laminae and bedding are consistent with a syn -sedimentary origin. Coarser-grained stage 2 ores have massive and vein-veinlet textures that are considered to form by replacement during sub-seafloor fluid flow. Based on SEM-EDS analysis, significant compositional variations were observed in the Py-1b grains. Py-1b is enriched in Pb compared to Py-1a. The elemental distribution map shows that the chalcopyrite (Cpy-2) minerals in Northern Chah-Farsakh deposit do not have variable composition and are homogeneous. Fluid inclusions in quartz minerals rom the footwall stringer zone have trapping temperatures between 203 and 500 °C with salinities (3.39–16 wt% NaCl equiv.) higher than modern seawater. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that the ore-forming fluids were derived from seawater. High level of Se in the massive ore facies of the Northern Chah-Farsakh supports the formation of mineralization from a high-temperature hydrothermal fluid. The Northern Chah-Farsakh Cu-Zn VMS deposit typify the mafic-siliciclastic type (Besshi-type), where the majority of the host stratigraphy is composed of a mafic flow-volcaniclastics and sedimentary rocks.

Noninvasive analysis of Safavid dynasty seven-color (haft-rang) tiles in central Iran through hyperspectral imaging and portable XRF

Abstract:The first polychrome glazed tiles in the Middle East, widely utilized for architectural ornamentation, can be traced back to the first millennium BCE. The seven-color (haft-rang) Safavid tiles represent an evolution of the mina'i and lajvardina ceramics in Iran. These exquisite seven-color tiles gained popularity in the central Iranian platue during the Safavid dynasty (approximately 1501-1736 CE) and graced various architectural marvels, including palaces, madrasas, and mosques. The glazed tiles examined in this study were retrieved from the Safavid segment of the Meymeh great mosque, which is situated in the central region of the Iranian Plateau. Given that glazed tiles are integral to architectural design, conducting destructive analyses on such glazed ceramics is unfeasible. Thus, noninvasive methods are essential for their analysis. In this study, we determined the coloring agents responsible for the different hues of the seven-color tiles. Notably, the results of hyperspectral imaging, which identified the coloring agents and glaze types, corroborated the findings derived from the chemical composition analysis through portable XRF. Furthermore, our research revealed a fascinating aspect of the black lines used to separate colored areas in seven-color glazed tiles. These lines feature two distinct coloring agents, chromium and manganese (without chromium), which are employed together (the manganese black lines above the chromium black lines). Specifically, the chromium-infused black lines adorned the base motifs, while the manganese-infused black lines were introduced after the addition of other colors, marking the chromium black lines and revealing finer details.

The Early Adoption of East Asian Crops in West Asia: Rice and Broomcorn Millet in Northern Iran

Abstract:Following their early domestication, broomcorn millet and rice (in East Asia) and wheat and barley (in South-west Asia) were subsequently adopted across Eurasia during the Bronze Age/early historic period. The precise timing and dispersal routes for this trans-Eurasian exchange, however, remain unclear. Here, the authors present archaeobotanical evidence from sites on the Caspian Sea's southern coast, demonstrating that broomcorn millet reached West Asia by c . 2050 BC and rice by c . 120 BC. These dispersals relate to two waves of globalisation and were based on two different mechanisms: an ‘infiltration’ model (broomcorn millet) and a ‘leapfrog’ model (rice). The results contribute to our understanding of the continental-scale connectivity of the late prehistoric/early historic periods.
Loess origin and late Pleistocene environmental reconstruction for northeastern Iran: Multiproxy evidences from the Chenarli loess-paleosol sequence

Abstract:Little information is available about the origin of loess on the Iranian Loess Plateau and along the northern foothills of the Alborz mountain range. Our well-dated multiproxy record from the Chenarli loess-paleosol sequence (LPS) fills this gap and provides a valuable paleoclimate record. Eight loess units are identified , covering the late penultimate glacial period (Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6: 135.6 ± 9.5 ka) until the Early Holocene (9.8 ± 0.7 ka). Geochemical results propose a constant local primary loess source with a longer transport distance only for MIS 5b and MIS 5d loess. However, low Si/Ti but high Zr/Ti ratios and increased sand contents of MIS 6 loess are implying stronger winds and derivation of this loess from a different source containing coarser particles. We interpret our data in a regional context and compare periods of loess deposition and pedogenesis in northern Iran with other loess records from Southern Eurasia. This indicates that late Pleistocene pedogenesis recorded at Chenarli agrees with periods of paleosol formation at LPS from northern Iran and Southern Eurasia. A ∼9-m thick loess deposition between ∼62 and 16 ka in unit 2 at Chenarli is consistent with other loess records indicating significant loess accumulation during MIS 3 with a peak during the Last Glacial Maximum in Southern Eurasia. One of the paleosols at Chenarli correlates with the late MIS 4 interstadial, which is well-recorded in southern Eurasian loess deposits. The geochemistry of loess and paleosols at Chenarli provides new information about the origin of loess in north and northeastern Iran where the sources of eolian deposition are still not well understood.

The Representation of Iran (Persia) in Young Children’s Picture Books in North America

Abstract:Abstract: There are a few empirical studies that examine the portrayal of the Middle East and its people in young children’s picture books. Many of these books depict Muslim life and celebrations without delving into the specificities of each Middle Eastern country. This study, which focuses on Iran as a non-Arab Muslim majority Middle Eastern country, investigates how Iran and its diverse cultures are represented in children’s picture books published in North America. The analysis was conducted on a sample of 27 picture books written in English between 2000 and 2021, targeting children aged three to nine. The findings reveal that a significant number of these books revolve around Nowruz celebrations (the Persian New Year) or ancient Persia, often presented through popular folktales. These findings underscore the need for books that depict the contemporary lives of Iranians, both within and outside the country, through narratives and illustrations.

Zircon U–Pb–Hf and Whole‐rock Sr–Nd Isotopic Insights on the Silurian Syenite–monzonite Shoshonitic Magmatism of Central Iran

Abstract:The Palaeozoic magmatic history of Central Iran is related to the subduction of the Proto‐Tethys Ocean and the amalgamation of Gondwana continental fragments. This study presents whole‐rock geochemistry, Sr–Nd isotope and zircon U–Pb–Hf ages of shoshonitic plutonic rocks (e.g., monzonite–syenite) from the north Posht‐e‐Badam (NPB) district with a view to constrain their petrogenetic and tectono‐magmatic evolution during the Palaeozoic. The geochemical data show moderate enrichment in large‐ion lithophile elements and Ti, large positive Pb anomalies, and depletion or moderate enrichment in high‐field‐strength elements (e.g., Nb and Ta), typical of continental arcs. Zircon LA–ICP–MS U–Pb ages are in the range of 444–428 Ma. The Sr–Nd–Hf isotope data, for example, ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) i = 0.7073 to 0.7089, εNd (t) = −1.4 to −0.2, and εHf (t) = −3.6 to +7.7, indicate derivation of the magma from a mantle source. The numerical modelling shows a contribution of less than 10% crustal assimilation and ~3% sediment into the melt‐derived mantle. We propose that metasomatic enrichment occurred during the subduction of Proto‐Tethyan Ocean between the Iranian microcontinents, leading to the formation of a shoshonitic melt. We infer that the recorded ages coincide with a continental rift episode followed by a rear arc tectonic region that spread along the northern active margin of Gondwana. Further, the change in magma affinity from calc‐alkaline (~474–512 Ma) to shoshonitic (444–428 Ma) in Central Iran is probably related to the gradual steepening of the slab dip angle and trench‐ward migration of the front arc into the region above metasomatically enriched rear arc mantle.

Abstract:The Iranian plateau, strategically positioned as a corridor for population diffusion across Eurasia, holds a pivotal role in elucidating the dynamics of human migrations originating from Africa around 60,000 years ago. Both prehistoric and historic movements of populations between Africa, Asia, and Europe may have been influenced by the unique geographical features of the Iranian plateau. Iran boasts ancient cultures and urban settlements predating some of the earliest civilizations, including the Neolithic revolution in neighboring Mesopotamia. Spanning from the Balkans and Egypt in the west to the Indus Valley in Pakistan and northern India in the southeast, the Iranian plateau encompasses a vast area characterized by incredible ethnocultural diversity. This region served as the origin for numerous mt-DNA/Y-DNA haplogroups that expanded to West Asia, Europe, Siberia, Central Asia, and South Asia. By examining both maternal and paternal haplogroups within the Iranian context, we aim to contribute to the broader narrative of human dispersals and elucidate the role those specific regions, such as the Iranian plateau, played in shaping the observed genetic diversity today. Due to the lack of comprehensive studies on mt-DNA /Y-DNA haplogroups in the Iranian population, our study sought to uncover the distribution of haplogroups among Iranian peoples using a large sample size. Our analysis focused on the frequency of ancestral haplogroups in Iran through the examination of large-scale whole-exome sequencing (WES) and SNP microarray data from 18,184 individuals. In our study, we observed 24 mt-DNA super haplogroups in the Iranian population, with the most common haplogroups belonging to West-Eurasian lineages U (20.73%), H (18.84%), J (12.10%), HV (9.22%), and T (8.98%), collectively comprising 69.70% of all Iranian samples. Notably, subclades J1 and U7 emerged as the two most frequent subclades, with frequencies of 11.24% and 7.30%, respectively. We also revealed the presence of 14 distinct Y-DNA haplogroups, with J, R, G, T, and Q emerging as the five predominant lineages. Notably, J2 (including J-L26) exhibited the highest frequency at 35.64%, followed by R1a at 14.68%. also, The detected mtDNA and Y-chromosome haplogroups were clustered into distinct groups that confirmed the heterogenicity of the Iranian population because of various factors including geographic or linguistic ethnic groups.

Late glacial and early Holocene hydroclimate variability in northwest Iran (Talesh Mountains) inferred from chironomid and pollen analysis

Abstract:We reconstructed the paleohydrologic and climatic history of the Lake Neor region, NW Iran, from the end of the late glacial to the middle Holocene (15,500–7500 cal yr BP). Subfossil chironomid and pollen assemblages in a sediment core from a peatland located south of Lake Neor enabled identification of four main hydrologic phases. The period 15,500–12,700 cal yr BP was characterized by a relatively dry climate with an open landscape, suggested by the abundance of Irano-Turanian steppe plants (e.g. Amaranthaceae, Artemisia and Cousinia). Dominance of several shallow-water and semi-terrestrial chironomid taxa (e.g. Pseudosmittia, Smittia/Parasmittia and Paraphaenocladius/Parametriocnemus) during this period is indicative of lower water tables in the wetland. Between 12,700 and 11,300 cal yr BP, chironomid taxa indicate higher wetland water tables, as suggested by the presence of Zavrelia, Chironomus anthracinus/plumosus-type and Micropsectra, which are inhabitants of open-water, lacustrine areas. The open-steppe vegetation remained dominant in the watershed during this time. Increasing wetland moisture could be explained by: (1) cool summers that reduced the evaporation rate; and/or (2) a decrease in duration of the summer dry season. The period 11,300–8700 cal yr BP was characterized by lower wetland moisture, contemporaneous with a delay in the expansion of deciduous forest, suggesting persistent dry climate conditions throughout the beginning of the Holocene, which may have been related to the intensified seasonality of precipitation. Around 8700 cal yr BP, higher wetland water levels, inferred from chironomids, occurred simultaneously with the onset of regional deciduous forest expansion, probably caused by a shortening of the summer dry period. We concluded that chironomids are appropriate paleoecological proxies to investigate global and local hydrologic variability in the Middle East.

Abstract:Kerman region where Sarcheshmeh zone is located includes the end part of Uremia-Dokhtar Zone. Extrusive igneous group in Sarcheshmeh is as follows: 1) andesite and 2) rhyodacite. The group of intrusive igneous rocks includes 1) porphyry granite, 2) porphyry granodiorite, and 3) porphyry diorite. Nochoon mine is located at 4 km of southwest of Sarcheshmeh copper mine and it comprises of a group of extrusive igneous rocks as follows: 1) andesite, and 2) dacite. Based on results of microprobe analysis, pyroxene mineral’s composition in these rocks of diopside and augite indicates amphiboles of composite zone of magnesium hosting type and existing plagioclases in regional rock for labradorite and bitonit composition. The most common compounds are chlorite with formula among antigorite and amosite. Comparison of magnetite mineralization in Sarcheshmeh and Nochoon indicates vein mineralization in Nochoon and disseminated granulation in Sarcheshmeh and particularly concerning to chalcopyrite, Nochoon includes more veins than Sarcheshmeh.

Abstract:Qanats are a traditional source of water management that exists throughout much of the Middle East, and extending into North Africa, Spain and South Asia. In particular, they have played an important role in managing the supply of water throughout Iran for over two millennia in what is an arguably a sustainable manner. With water scarcity playing a prominent role in the modern world, qanats offer a practical, low cost solution to these issues. This paper looks at the early development of qanats in Iran, the important role they played in revolutionising the settlement systems and sustainability of communities in the past, and how they are now being reinvigorated to provide sustainable water in the present in Iran and other countries.

Abstract:The geodynamic significance of Cenozoic magmatism of the Central Tethyan orogenic belt linking the tectonic zones of Iran, South Armenian Block (Lesser Caucasus) and Turkey remains a subject of debate. This study is focused on the thick geological succession of high potassic magmatic rocks erupted in Talysh Massif, NW Iran. We report a comprehensive geochemical study that demonstrates that this succession is comprised of shoshonitic mostly basaltic and some rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks emplaced during an Eocene magmatic flare-up. Forsterite rich olivine (Fo 70-93), combined to high-Mg clinopyroxene (Mg# 0.6-0.8) and high-Ti calcic amphibole (magnesiohastingsite) are the dominant mafic minerals in these rocks. Mafic lavas are enriched in LILE and depleted in HFSE, with high Th/Yb, Ba/Th and Nb/Zr ratios, suggestive of an enriched mantle source following Tethys subduction history. Interlayered felsic lavas allowed to date the series by U-Pb on zircon at 43.17 ± 0.40 Ma, with one relict core displaying an inherited age of 580 Ma. eHf i CHUR of Eocene zircons range from 1.7 to -0.9 (with corresponding T DM ages around 1.0 Ga). The latter, along with the detection of a Neoproterozoic zircon xenocryst, indicates a crustal contamination by a Neoproterozoic (and older) lower crust. These data are in agreement with the partial melting of a subduction-modified subcontinental mantle. This magmatic flare-up could have been triggered by an Asthenosphere upwelling related to the onset of south-dipping subduction in the Transcaucasus region and transcrustal strike-slip faults with a more significant crustal contamination than in the Lesser Caucasus region.
