Abstract:As the largest capital city site of Chinese western region on 'Silk Road', Qocho city site is important to study the history of ancient Chinese western region and culture exchange between China and central Asia, west Asia and even Europe. To date the archaeological investigations of the city planning are mainly based on ruins on the ground. However, most of relics above ground have been seriously destroyed by the agricultural cultivation, so the layout of the city can not be understood completely only by investigating the ruins above ground. A geophysical survey acquired in 2012, near an excavation area, investigated buried relics using magnetic gradient and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Some magnetic anomalies were inferred as the response of house walls, pits and a temple base by referring to archaeological results of the neighboring excavation area. GPR profiles provided information on the depth of the magnetic anomalies. The identity between geophysical results and archaeological document on layout of three houses verified the validity of magnetic gradient and GPR.

Abstract:A Collection of Epitaphs from the Tang West Market Museum was of significant value in literary studies.The deeds of the Tang literary writers which were recorded in their epitaphs provide a more comprehensive understanding of such famous poets as He Zhizhang,Li Bai,Du Fu and Wei Yingwu.The Tang Dynasty was called "an era of poetry",but many poets,together with their poems,remained unknown because they could be made well known only by spreading their manuscripts.These unknown poets found from their newly unearthed epitaphs provide important resources for academic research.Epitaph is a special type of biography,which has continuously evolved in the process of its normalization and development.The contingency and originality of the newly unearthed epitaphs are mostly helpful to the study of the occurrence and evolution of literary styles.On the basis of the newly unearthed epitaphs,the transcription of the works of the Tang literary writers can also exhibit the literary and academic prosperity in the Tang Dynasty.

Abstract:In order to test the ability of geophysical technologies to detect buried structures made of mud brick and rammed earth, a geophysical survey was acquired at Qocho City site of China in 2012 using magnetic gradient and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Magnetic anomalies were interpreted as the response of house wall foundations, pits, and a temple base by reference to archaeological results from a neighbouring excavation area. The magnetic data were complemented by 2D ground penetrating radar profiles, which provided additional information on the depth of these causative structures. An archaeological survey dated 1913 reported the layout of three houses that have since been largely razed to the ground in the study area. Our geophysical survey confirmed the locations of two houses. This study shows that magnetic and ground penetrating radar methods are valuable tools to detect buried earthen archaeological remains in a dry environment.

Abstract:Comprehensive micro-analyses were conducted to identify different pigments and dyes used in painted figurines of the Tang Dynasty unearthed from Astana Tombs, located along the ancient Silk Road. Interestingly, a mixture of lazurite and indigo was first discovered on a painted figurine to create a special blue hue, demonstrating that ancient Gaochang craftsmen were already skilled in using mixed colorants. Moreover, superimposition techniques were as well applied in these painted figurines, such as hematite or cinnabar overlaid on red lead. Despite the lack of unambiguous restoration records in the last century, multiple synthetic organic colorants used for repainting the lokapala figurine were successfully identified by Raman spectroscopy and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), which should be helpful for the retrospective documentation of the restoration history of these artworks. These investigations towards archaeological materials can provide precise historical facts about the artworks and fundamental knowledge for their conservation.

Abstract:The excavation in Tuyuq Grottoes initiated in 2010 has brought about numerous archaeological ﬁnds. In particular, those discovered in Cave 26 on the high platform in the middle of the Western Section are noteworthy. Many wall inscriptions in Old Uighur, as well as Brahmi and Chinese are preserved in the side rooms, releasing important information on the dating and the nature of this cave. They also contribute new data to the ﬁelds of history and linguistics. This paper presents an edition and study of all the 29 inscriptions preserved in Room B, most of which are written in Old Uighur, while others in Chinese.

Abstract:This article has observed and inferred in all sorts of way to reckon out the concrete date of those burial grottoes located at the Northern Area Grottoes of Mogao Grottoes which were dating from the period of the Sui and the Tang Dynasty. Based on the reckon time, this article have divided the process of evolutionary changes of the shapes of the burial grottoes into four periods and have made a comparative study with those burial grottoes of The Longmen Grottoesat the same time, and tries to find out differences between them. Furthermore, this article have discussed the initial stage of appearance of the burial grotto and the reason that the burial grottoes die out.

Abstract:The Northern Wei Dynasty witnessed an important transformation to the Tuoba Xianbei tomb culture,with the original cultural characteristics of the region gradually disappearing.In the process,a host of elements from other cultures and tribes were incorporated and assimilated.With the unification of Northern China and the inflow of large numbers of immigrants to Pingcheng,the region saw a convergence of more and more cultural elements.This article analyzes the compositions,the functions and the mutual influences of these cultural sources,and reveals how the tomb cultures of the late Pingcheng times changed to the Jin system.

Abstract:Supported by systematic description on late archaeological remains,this article re-examines the dates of early tomb robber's pits in the royal tombs at Yinxu and believes that these pits date to the mid-Western Zhou to the Han Dynasty and are later than the "heaps","pits",and graves of the "Xiaotun culture".The author also gives further evidence to the hypothesis that "certain remains from the last phase of the fourth stage of Yinxu culture - though they may still belong to the Shang culture-date to the early Western Zhou period".Some relics from human activities left after Zhou Gong's second eastern expedition in these royal tombs are similar to artifacts from the fourth stage of Yinxu culture, but they should date to the Western Zhou.

Abstract:Abstract From 2016 through 2018, Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and other institutions excavated the Qingtang site, the foci of which were concentrated in Caves 1–4 of Huangmenyan locality. The excavation recovered burials and hearths and unearthed human bone fossils, lithic products, pottery wares, implements made of shell, bone, and horn (antler), as well as faunal and botanical remains, in total over 10,000 pieces. The remains of this site could be divided into four phases from the earliest to the latest, which provided important data for the studies on the cultures in South China and Southeast Asia during the transitional period from Paleolithic to Neolithic Ages.

Abstract:The inscriptions on the stone blocks used as the building materials of the Beizhuang Han Tomb in Dingzhou City,Hebei contained very rich place name information,which provided important clues for the researches on the styles of the tombs of the feudatory lords in the Hebei area during the Han Dynasty and the changes of the territory of the Zhongshan Kingdom in the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties.By the trimming and classifying of the place names in the stone inscriptions,this paper pointed out that the style of the Beizhuang Han Tomb had relationships with that of the feudatory lord tombs of the Han Dynasty at the border between Shandong and Henan Provinces,and the county names under the administration of Zhongshan Kingdom seen in the stone inscriptions of the Beizhuang Han Tomb could be used to restore the territory of Zhongshan Kingdom in the early Eastern Han Dynasty.By comparing with the county names under the administration of Zhongshan Kingdom seen in the historic literatures,the outline of the changes of the territory of Zhongshan Kingdom in the Western and Eastern Han Dynasties could be drawn out.

Abstract:The Taidong Tomb in the imperial tombs of the Qing dynasties has great aesthetic value and a rich history. In this study, we conducted the first investigation ever performed on the raw materials used in the paintings in the Taidong Tomb. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), polarized light microscopy (PLM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy (m-RS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) were used to comprehensively analyze the painting of Long’en Hall, Xipei Hall and the ceiling of Minglou. In the conclusion of the study, the paintings were found to contain natural mineral and synthetic pigments, including atacamite (Cu2Cl(OH)3), azurite (2CuCO3·Cu(OH)2), vermilion (HgS), carbon black (C), anglesite (PbSO4), white lead (2PbCO3·Pb(OH)2), synthetic emerald green (Cu(CH3COO)2·3Cu(AsO2)2) and ultramarine ((Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(SO4,S,Cl)2). This allows us to conclude that some of the architectural paintings were repainted in the mid-to-late 19th century. The mortar layer may consist of brick ash (albite, gismondine), lime water, tung oil and flour. The fiber layer material may be ramie. Researching the raw materials of the paintings in the Taidong Tomb is of great value because it provides scientific data for the future preservation of the paintings in the tomb.

Abstract:In the autumn 2005,Archaeology Specialty of Department of History,Nanjing University excavated the Guijing Cemetery in Fengjie County,Chongqing Municipality.The excavation revealed six earthen pit tombs and one brick-chamber tomb.Five of the earthen pit tombs were densely clustered together,the dates of which were from the late Warring-States Period to the early Western Han Dynasty;from them,willow leaf-shaped bronze swords of Ba Style and the pottery ding-tripods and pots and bronze huang-semicircular pendants of Chu Style were unearthed,showing the features of the infusion of Ba and Chu Styles and the Chu Culture as the mainstream.The two sets of ding-tripod legs,each of which represented seven pottery ding-tripods,were all of the Chu Style.Iron coffin nails were found in two earthen pit tombs.From the brick-chamber tomb of the Eastern Han Dynasty,pottery figurines,basin and rarely-seen money tree base were unearthed.This excavation is significantly meaningful for the research on the evolution of the regional cultures in Chongqing area.

Abstract:Abstract From June to August 2008, a joint archaeological team excavated a mural tomb at Shuiquanliang Village in Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province. The tomb is situated about 1.5km west of the village. In the tomb, grave goods such as pottery figurines, pottery models and glazed ceramic vessels as well as many well-preserved murals were found. The tomb structure, murals, and tomb furnishings suggest that the tomb was built in the late Northern Qi Dynasty; the occupant of the tomb may have been the military commander of Shuozhou City. This excavation is very important for the study of the history and culture of Shuozhou area in the Northern Qi Dynasty.

Abstract:These are few sites about 10 000 BP in the early Neolithic period in North China; among these, the Donghulin site is the only one which included the remains of peoples' use of fire (hearth pits), stone implements, pottery objects, and human tombs. The excavation of the Donghulin site in 2001 provides very important information for research on people and culture in the early Neolithic period in North China. The finding of Donghulin Man has filled the gap in our knowledge of human development since the period of the "Upper Cave Man" (30 000a BP) in North China. It is also important for research on people-land relationships.

Abstract:Historical photographs of Kucha, mostly those taken by the Turfan German Expedition (1902–1914), can be used to recover information concerning the caves lost over the last century and features that cannot be seen any longer. The analysis of photographic material can help to individuate patterns and trigger thoughts leading to a better understanding of the sites, appreciate lost features, reveal the likely location of caves presently covered by debris, understand how caves were restored in antiquity, and suggest better ways to preserve and use rock monastery sites. Though this article focuses on Kucha, the proposed method can be used at other archaeological sites.
