Abstract:Impact craters are formed due to the high-speed collisions between small to medium-sized celestial bodies. Impact is the most significant driving force in the evolution of celestial bodies, and the impact craters provide crucial insights into the formation, evolution, and impact history of celestial bodies. In this paper, we present a detailed review of the characteristics of impact craters, impact crater remote sensing data, recognition algorithms, and applications related to impact craters. We first provide a detailed description of the geometric texture, illumination, and morphology characteristics observed in remote sensing data of craters. Then we summarize the remote sensing data and cataloging databases for the four terrestrial planets (i.e., the Moon, Mars, Mercury, and Venus), as well as the impact craters on Ceres. Subsequently, we study the advancement achieved in the traditional methods, machine learning methods, and deep learning methods applied to the classification, segmentation, and recognition of impact craters. Furthermore, based on the analysis results, we discuss the existing challenges in impact crater recognition and suggest some solutions. Finally, we explore the implementation of impact crater detection algorithms and provide a forward-looking perspective.

Quantitative analysis of crustal deformation, seismic strain, and stress estimation in Iran via earthquake mechanisms

Abstract:This study investigates the variations in stress, strain, and deformation of the Earth's crust in Iran arising from tectonic movements and seismic activities. We employed the Kostrov and Molnar methods to quantify these parameters, focusing on the influence of different zoning techniques on the estimations. Analyzing data from 637 earthquakes (moment magnitudes > 5.5) spanning 1909 to 2016, we determined the directions of maximum pressure, tension, and seismic strain through two primary approaches: comprehensive zoning and individual earthquake analysis. Additionally, we assess horizontal shortening and vertical crustal adjustments. Our methodology involves three distinct strategies: individual earthquake analysis, 1° × 1° zoning, and tectonic zoning. The findings demonstrate that the choice of zoning method significantly affects the direction and magnitude of seismic strain estimations. Although both methods identified significant deformations in the Dasht Bayaz and Qaen regions of Eastern Iran, differences between the Kostrov and Molnar methods in estimating seismic strain are observed. The high Zagros region shows signs of crustal thickening, whereas the Zagros foreland exhibits crustal thinning. Intriguingly, Eastern Alborz indicates uplift, and Western Alborz suggests subsidence, offering an alternative view to the conventional tectonic understanding of the Alborz range. These results highlight the critical role of zoning in stress analyses and the disparities between widely used estimation techniques. They underscore the necessity of careful method selection and interpretation in geodynamic studies, particularly in seismically active regions like Iran.

Abstract:Geochemical data and accurate statistics are critical in environmental studies to identify sources of soil contamination and reduce costs. A comprehensive understanding of investigation methods and data interpretation is a current challenge. This study presents innovative techniques for investigating soil contamination that can be applied worldwide. Using sediment samples from the southern region of Iran, we analysed 38 samples with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (K-S), correlation coefficients, cluster and factor analyses, was performed using SPSS software. Cluster analysis revealed two primary element sources: lithogenic and anthropogenic, likely from the Karun River, the Gachsaran Formation, and contamination from nearby oil platforms. The pollution indices showed moderate pollution values for Mg, Sr, Cr, Ni, Pr, and Cd. Geochemical indices RI, PLI, Igeo, EF, Cf, and NIPI assessed the extent of pollution. Integration of sedimentary and geochemical data identified the source of sand particles as reworked Neogene deposits and silt from marl layers in upstream evaporites. These techniques have potential global applications.

Abstract:Crater-detection approaches can be divided into four categories: manual recognition, shape-profile fitting algorithms, machine-learning methods and geological information-based analysis using terrain and spectral data. The mainstream method is Shape-profile fitting algorithms. Many scholars throughout the world use the illumination gradient information to fit standard circles by least square method. Although this method has achieved good results, it is difficult to identify the craters with poor "visibility", complex structure and composition. Moreover, the accuracy of recognition is difficult to be improved due to the multiple solutions and noise interference. Aiming at the problem, we propose a method for the automatic extraction of impact craters based on spectral characteristics of the moon rocks and minerals: 1) Under the condition of sunlight, the impact craters are extracted from MI by condition matching and the positions as well as diameters of the craters are obtained. 2) Regolith is spilled while lunar is impacted and one of the elements of lunar regolith is iron. Therefore, incorrectly extracted impact craters can be removed by judging whether the crater contains "non iron" element. 3) Craters which are extracted correctly, are divided into two types: simple type and complex type according to their diameters. 4) Get the information of titanium and match the titanium distribution of the complex craters with normal distribution curve, then calculate the goodness of fit and set the threshold. The complex craters can be divided into two types: normal distribution curve type of titanium and non normal distribution curve type of titanium. We validated our proposed method with MI acquired by SELENE. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has good performance in the test area.

Abstract:Lithological mapping using satellite images, particularly the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data help in effectively defining the best initial targets for regional exploration. ASTER data allow for the discrimination of rock units in the broader region. This research work is focused on the use of remote sensing techniques for geological mapping using ASTER satellite image and generating a geological map of Sangan region. The study area is located in southeast of Khorasan-e-Razavi province and at the eastern edge of the Khaf-Kashmar-Bardskan Volcano-Plutonic Metallogenic Belt in northeast Iran. Band ratio (BR), spectral angle mapper (SAM) and support vector machines (SVMs) methods were used for classifying the main lithologic units in Sangan region. The results of BR, SAM and SVM techniques were quantitatively compared with geological boundaries mapped in the field showing an accuracy of nearly 79 %. SVMs method, in comparison to conventional methods of classification, was known to provide superior results. As the final result of this research, integration of remote sensing and field investigations led to generating high accuracy geological map in the Sangan region. Application of the methods has invaluable implications for geological mapping and mineral exploration in inaccessible regions.
Parsisanj: a semi-automatic component-based approach towards search engine evaluation

Abstract:Accessing to required data on the internet is wide via search engines in the last two decades owing to the huge amount of available data and the high rate of new data is generating daily. Accordingly, search engines are encouraged to make the most valuable existing data on the web searchable. Knowing how to handle a large amount of data in each step of a search engines' procedure from crawling to indexing and ranking is just one of the challenges that a professional search engine should solve. Moreover, it should also have the best practices in handling users' traffics, state-of-the-art natural language processing tools, and should also address many other challenges on the edge of science and technology. As a result, evaluating these systems is too challenging due to the level of internal complexity they have, and is crucial for finding the improvement path of the existing system. Therefore, an evaluation procedure is a normal subsystem of a search engine that has the role of building its roadmap. Recently, several countries have developed national search engine programs to build an infrastructure to provide special services based on their needs on the available data of their language on the web. This research is conducted accordingly to enlighten the advancement path of two Iranian national search engines: Yooz and Parsijoo in comparison with two international ones, Google and Bing. Unlike related work, it is a semi-automatic method to evaluate the search engines at the first pace. Eventually, we obtained some interesting results which based on them the component-based improvement roadmap of national search engines could be illustrated concretely.

Automatic crater shape retrieval using unsupervised and semi-supervised systems

Abstract:Impact craters are depressions formed due to impacts on the surface of planetary bodies. Recent deep learning-based crater detection methods assume craters as circular-shaped without much attention to extracting craters’ shape and morphology. Craters’ shape information (i.e., instance segmentation map for craters) can be helpful for many advanced analyses including crater formation and surface characteristics. However, publicly available ground truth catalogs for the lunar surface do not contain crater shape annotations and are also challenged by the missing craters problem. We attempt to solve these challenges by proposing a novel estimation and refinement-based approach using a combination of unsupervised and semi-supervised systems. Our method consists of (a) learning estimated crater segmentation (ECS) maps by a novel adaptive rim estimation algorithm (unsupervised system) using side information, (b) refining ECS by a cascade of Mask region-based convolutional neural networks (R-CNNs) to obtain refined crater segmentation (RCS) maps (semi-supervised system), and (c) combining RCS followed by predicting a highly accurate crater segmentation map. In the absence of any publicly available catalog for crater shape annotations, we conducted a ranking-based user study to compare against the state-of-the-art. The proposed method outperforms by achieving the best ranking for 63.53% crater images as compared to 9.67% for state-of-the-art. An InSAR‐GNSS Velocity Field for Iran

Abstract:We present average ground‐surface velocities and strain rates for the 1.7 million km2 area of Iran, from the joint inversion of InSAR‐derived displacements and GNSS data. We generate interferograms from 7 years of Sentinel‐1 radar acquisitions, correct for tropospheric noise using the GACOS system, estimate average velocities using LiCSBAS time‐series analysis, tie this into a Eurasia‐fixed reference frame, and perform a decomposition to estimate East and Vertical velocities at 500 m spacing. Our InSAR‐GNSS velocity fields reveal predominantly diffuse crustal deformation, with localized interseismic strain accumulation along the North Tabriz, Main Kopet Dagh, Main Recent, Sharoud, and Doruneh faults. We observe signals associated with recent groundwater subsidence, co‐ and postseismic deformation, active salt diaprism, and sediment motion. We derive high‐resolution strain rate estimates on a country‐ and fault‐scale, and discuss the difficulties of mapping diffuse strain rates in areas with abundant non‐tectonic and anthropogenic signals.

Abstract:Craters form the basis for lunar geological stratigraphy and yield significant information on terrain evolution and the history of the solar system. Thus, the recognition of lunar impact craters is an important branch of modern planetary studies. To resolve issues associated with the insufficient and inaccurate extraction of quantitative information about lunar impact craters, this study proposes an algorithm for the automatic extraction and identification of impact craters that is based on CCD stereo camera images and associated digital elevation model (DEM) data that were acquired by the Chang'E satellites. The proposed procedure works by jointly characterizing a crater candidate by means of its 2-D and 3-D features. Specifically, the novel procedure discussed in this paper selects possible crater candidates based on the extraction of geometric features from optical images and improves the final selection using 3-D features that are extracted from the DEM. Additionally, this study addresses for the first time to accurately identify different types of impact craters based on the 2-D and 3-D characteristics of the crater bottoms as well as topographic transects across the craters. The proposed approach is tested on multiple data sets that were acquired by the Chang'E satellites and provides a very high level of accuracy in both the detection and identification phases.
An investigation of Earth surface deformation by SBAS-InSAR analysis

Abstract:Land subsidence, whether in its gradual down-settling form, creeping ground fracturing, or sudden sinkholes, is considered one of Iran's most catastrophic environmental challenges. The present study employed interferometric synthetic-aperture radar (InSAR) to detect land displacement in Garmsar City. The output maps reveal significant subsidence at 30 cm year−1 rates. According to the correlated subsidence map and piezometer data, groundwater harvesting for urban, industrial, and agricultural uses is primarily responsible for subsidence. High dependence on underground water resources and the absence of surface water resources in Iran's central regions have led to a radical decline in groundwater heads. For this target, 17 frames of images during 2015–2019 with a small temporal-perpendicular baseline were allocated and analyzed using the small baseline subset (SBAS). After removing unnecessary phases and noise, phase shift due to land deformation was extracted and converted to surface displacement. The InSAR analysis revealed a maximum of 37 cm and at least 33 cm subsidence for the Garmsar plain, and the average annual subsidence is estimated to be 36 cm, which is very close to the subsidence rate of the Tehran and Varamin plains. High-subsidence areas were generally located in the northern part of the Garmsar Plain, and subsidence rates decreased in the Southeast. The temporal and regional relationships between groundwater data and subsidence suggest that the general pattern of subsidence in the Garmsar Plain is caused by groundwater overexploitation, leading to widespread surface deformation. Since Garmsar is close to the capital, water resources are under pressure. By managing water resources in this area, this phenomenon will be reduced.Graphical abstract

Autonomous Crater Detection and Matching on Planetary Surface

Abstract:This article presents a crater landmark detection and matching method for pinpoint navigation for planetary exploration. Craters are the most notable terrain features with clear outlines in lighting conditions. While taking into consideration the direction of the lighting source,the craters are detected through edge detection,edge clustering of the same crater and ellipse fitting. Based on the geometric invariants of coplanar conics,the voting strategy is used to match the detected craters with the crater database. Besides,a false match and miss match revision strategy is proposed to obtain the crater's accurate global position. Lunar surface images obtained by Chang' e-1 are given to show the feasibility of the proposed method.
Pseudo-Spectral Spatial Feature Extraction and Enhanced Fusion Image for Efficient Meter-Sized Lunar Impact Crater Automatic Detection in Digital Orthophoto Map

Abstract:Impact craters are crucial for our understanding of planetary resources, geological ages, and the history of evolution. We designed a novel pseudo-spectral spatial feature extraction and enhanced fusion (PSEF) method with the YOLO network to address the problems encountered during the detection of the numerous and densely distributed meter-sized impact craters on the lunar surface. The illumination incidence edge features, isotropic edge features, and eigen frequency features are extracted by Sobel filtering, LoG filtering, and frequency domain bandpass filtering, respectively. Then, the PSEF images are created by pseudo-spectral spatial techniques to preserve additional details from the original DOM data. Moreover, we conducted experiments using the DES method to optimize the post-processing parameters of the models, thereby determining the parameter ranges for practical deployment. Compared with the Basal model, the PSEF model exhibited superior performance, as indicated by multiple measurement metrics, including the precision, recall, F1-score, mAP, and robustness, etc. Additionally, a statistical analysis of the error metrics of the predicted bounding boxes shows that the PSEF model performance is excellent in predicting the size, shape, and location of impact craters. These advancements offer a more accurate and consistent method to detect the meter-sized craters on planetary surfaces, providing crucial support for the exploration and study of celestial bodies in our solar system.

Abstract:The unexpected collapse of land surface due to subsidence is one of the most significant geohazards that threatens human life and infrastructure. Kabudrahang and Famenin are two Iranian plains experiencing several sinkholes due to the characteristics of the underground soil layers and extreme groundwater depletion. In this study, space-based Synthetic Aperture Radar images are used to investigate the ground displacement behavior to examine the feasibility of Sentinel-1 data in detecting precursory deformation proceeding before the sinkhole formation. The selected sinkhole occurred in August 2018 in the vicinity of Kerdabad village in Hamedan province with a 40 m diameter and depth of ~40 m. Time series of the European constellation Sentinel-1 data, spanning from January 2015 to August 2018, is analyzed, and the results revealed a 3 cm annual subsidence (–3 cm/year) along with the line-of-sight direction. Time-series analysis demonstrated that the driving mechanism of the sinkhole formation had a gradual process. Displacement of persistent scatterers (PSs) near the cave area had an acceleration by approaching the sinkhole formation date. In contrast, other areas that are far from the cave area show linear subsidence behavior over time. Additionally, the one-kilometer deformation profile over the cave area indicates a high subsidence rate precisely at the location where the sinkhole was formed later on 20 August 2018.

Abstract:The study of lunar surface characteristics has been one of the key tasks during lunar exploration in the past several decades. Impact craters, the most typical geomorphic unit and the most basic geomorphologic shape on the lunar surface, have been greatly concerned in the study of lunar surface topographical and morphologic characteristics. To date, there have been numerous achievements in the identification of impact craters using remote-sensing images; while there have been a limited number of studies on the identification of impact craters using digital elevation model (DEM). Based on the analysis of the morphological characteristics of lunar impact craters, including the horizontal and vertical structures, this article introduces a lunar impact crater extraction algorithm. Using the DEM data from Chang'E-1 as its test data, the extraction results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately and efficiently identify the spatial location and quantity of impact craters.

Abstract:We are living in the data age. Communications over scientific networks creates new opportunities for researchers who aim to discover the hidden pattern in these huge repositories. This study utilizes network science to create collaboration network of Iranian Scientific Institutions. A modularity-based approach applied to find network communities. To reach a big picture of science production flow, analysis of the collaboration network is crucial. Our results demonstrated that geographic location closeness and ethnic attributes has important roles in academic collaboration network establishment. Besides, it shows that famous scientific centers in the capital city of Iran, Tehran has strong influence on the production flow of scientific activities. These academic papers are mostly viewed and downloaded from the United State of America, China, India, and Iran. The motivation of this research is that by discovering hidden communities in the network and finding the structure of intuitions communications, we can identify each scientific center research potential separately and clear mutual scientific fields. Therefore, an efficient strategic program can be designed, developed and tested to keep scientific centers in progress way and navigate their research goals into a straight useful roadmap to identify and fill the unknown gaps.

Uncovering a Seismogenic Fault in Southern Iran through Co-Seismic Deformation of the Mw 6.1 Doublet Earthquake of 14 November 2021

Abstract:On 14 November 2021, a doublet earthquake, each event of which had an Mw of 6.1, struck near Fin in the Simply Folded Belt (SFB) in southern Iran. The first quake occurred at 12:07:04 UTC, followed by a second one just a minute and a half later. The SFB is known for its blind thrust faults, typically not associated with surface ruptures. These earthquakes are usually linked to the middle and lower layers of the sedimentary cover. Identifying the faults that trigger earthquakes in the region remains a significant challenge and is subject to high uncertainty. This study aims to identify and determine the fault(s) that may have caused the doublet earthquake. To achieve this goal, we utilized the DInSAR method using Sentinel-1 to detect deformation, followed by finite-fault inversion and magnetic interpretation to determine the location, geometry, and slip distribution of the fault(s). Bayesian probabilistic joint inversion was used to model the earthquake sources and derive the geometric parameters of potential fault planes. The study presents two potential fault solutions—one dipping to the north and the other to the south. Both solutions showed no significant difference in strike and fault location, suggesting a single fault. Based on the results of the seismic inversion, it appears that a north-dipping fault with a strike, dip, and rake of 257°, 74°, and 77°, respectively, is more consistent with the geological setting of the area. The fault plane has a width of roughly 3.6 km, a length of 13.4 km, and a depth of 5.6 km. Our results revealed maximum displacements along the radar line of sight reaching values of up to −360 mm in the ascending orbit, indicating an unknown fault with horizontal displacements at the surface ranging from −144 to 170 mm and maximum vertical displacements between −204 and 415 mm. Aeromagnetic data for Iran were utilized with an average flight-line spacing of 7.5 km. The middle of the data observation period was considered to apply the RTP filter, and the DRTP method was used. We calculated the gradient of the residual anomaly in the N-S direction due to the direction of the existing faults and folds. The gradient map identified the fault and potential extension of the observed anomalies related to a fault with an ENE-WSW strike, which could extend to the ~ E-W. We suggest that earthquakes occur in the sedimentary cover of the SFB where subsurface faulting is involved, with Hormuz salt acting as an important barrier to rupture. The multidisciplinary approach used in this study, including InSAR and magnetic data, underscores the importance of accurate fault characterization. These findings provide valuable insights into the seismic hazard of the area.

Abstract:The paper discusses some examples of image processing applied to improve optical satellite imagery of small craters (Kamil, Veevers, Haviland). The examples show that image processing can be quite useful for further in-situ researches, because the resultant imagery helps to have a better picture of the crater shape and of the distribution of debris about it. The paper is also disclosing an interesting underwater structure, with shape and size of a small crater, located on the coast-line of Sudan.

Investigation of the application of geospatial artificial intelligence for integration of earthquake precursors extracted from remotely sensed SAR and thermal images for earthquake prediction

Abstract:The main factors contributing to the occurrence of an earthquake are under the crust. Also; due to the lack of access to direct measurements of these factors and the parameters involved in the occurrence of an earthquake, the main goal of researchers is to study the earthquake occurrence through its precursors. Currently, monitoring and identifying some of these precursors are made possible by geomatics technologies. It is an undeniable fact that the behavioral variations of the precursors don't follow a common pattern in all earthquakes. Also, the variations of the precursors show peculiar behaviors in each region. So, it seems infeasible to provide an accurate prediction based on the analysis of the behavioral variations of a single precursor. Unlike previous studies, this study doesn't have a single-parametrical orientation toward an earthquake prediction process. Accordingly, this study aims to extract the trend of variations in crustal deformation anomalies and thermal anomalies before the earthquake to analyze them through an integrated process based on data mining methods. As a result, the tests of earthquake predictions for 17 cases have shown that the proposed method can make a reliable prediction of the probable time and magnitude range of oblique-thrust earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5.5. Moreover, the proposed method has been able to accurately estimate the occurrence of the 26th November 2019 Albania earthquake (Mw = 6.4) as well as 21th September 2019 Albania earthquake (Mw = 5.6) before they happen.

Abstract:Due to uncertainties of illumination and incidence in image processing,a method that impact craters are automatically detected and recognized based on the DEM from Mars Orbiter Laser Altimetery (MOLA) aboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) is proposed in this paper.Topographic curvature,which delineates impact craters,can be deduced from topography data.The thresholding map of curvature is transformed in to a binary map,from which we can detect impact craters by combination of segmentation and flooding algorithms.The true rate is 73.4% in detecting craters.More impact craters on Mars with confirmation algorithm can be effectively detected truly,which are added to the existing catalog of manually identified Martian craters.

Abstract:Remote sensing satellite imagery consistently provides valuable and frequent information, enabling the exploration of mineral resources across immense, remote and harsh domains. Recent developments in spaceborne hyperspectral remote sensing have opened avenues to support diverse remote sensing applications, particularly in the realm of mineral exploration. This study evaluates the capabilities of the PRecursore IperSpettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) hyperspectral satellite data for mapping alteration minerals using the Matched Filtering Unmixing (MFU) approach in the Sar-e-châh-e-shur, Birjand, Iran. Minerals such as richterite, augite, psilomelane, ilmenite, kaolinite, smectite, mirabilite, muscovite, and chlorite were identified using the vertex component analysis (VCA) technique. Subsequently, alteration mineral maps of the study area were generated using a matched filtering technique. Additionally, through the integration of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thin section examination, geochemical study of stream sediments, and interpretation of geological maps, potential alteration mineralization zones were delineated in the study area. Ultimately, the validation process, which included comparing the maps with the findings derived from the PRISMA remote sensing study, was conducted using the normal score equation. Thus, our results yielded a normalized score of 3.42 out of 4, signifying an 85.71% agreement with the regional geological characteristics of the study area. The results of this investigation highlight the substantial potential of the PRISMA dataset for systematic alteration mineral mapping and consequent exploration of ore minerals, specifically in challenging and inaccessible terrains.
