Abstract:According to a large-scale survey administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan, in 2021, interview tests wherein students speak with a teacher or an assistant language teacher are mainly used in Japanese junior high schools to assess interactional competence in speaking English. However, there has been a lack of investigation regarding the types of utterances elicited by students during interview tests conducted by teachers. This study aimed to fill this gap by involving a teacher who interviewed 41 junior high school students, allowing for a holistic and analytical examination of the dialogues during the interviews. The analysis of these student-teacher dialogues revealed that the teacher actively assisted students in continuing the dialogue by offering new topics, developing them, and asking topic-related questions to continue the dialogue. The authors argue that these findings indicate that the interviews demonstrated the teacher's interactional competence more than that of the students, making it difficult to assess students' interactional competence through teacherconducted interviews. Therefore, alternative speaking-test formats are needed to assess the students' interactional competence in English.

Abstract:Abstract Peer learning, also known as collaborative learning, is based on social constructivism and contends that learning takes place more actively when students interact socially with their peers. This study sought to examine the effects of scaffolded peer assessment in group-oriented classrooms on developing speaking skills and enlarging the vocabulary size of language learners. To accomplish this objective, through cluster sampling, the researchers selected 37 lower-intermediate and 5 intermediate learners of English. Then, 20 lower-intermediate subjects were randomly assigned as the experimental group along with the 5 more proficient learners. In groups of 5, the intermediate learner was assigned the role of the mediator and was responsible for giving feedback to their peers. The rest of the subjects were assigned as the control group and there was no mediator in their group. Four instructional sessions were allocated to scaffolded peer assessment of speaking and four sessions were devoted to scaffolded peer assessment of vocabulary learning. In this randomized pre-test–post-test-delayed post-test trial, an independent sample t test, and a one-way repeated measures ANOVA were carried out. The results of the statistical analyses demonstrated the impact of scaffolded peer assessment on developing both speaking skills and enlarging learners’ vocabulary size with a large effect size. That is, by implementing scaffolded peer assessment in a group-oriented context both speaking skills and vocabulary knowledge can be developed. The pedagogical implication of this study is that language teacher can implement the notions of social constructivism and socio-cultural theory proposed by Vygotsky (Readings on the Development of Children 23:34-41, 1978) to expand and develop learners’ zone of proximal development.

Abstract:Peer assessment (PA) is employed as one fundamental practice of classroom-based assessment in terms of its learning-oriented and formative nature. The exercise of peer assessment has multiple and additional benefits for student learning. However, research into the learning processes in peer assessment is scarce both in theory and in practice, making it difficult to evaluate and pinpoint its value as a tool in assessment as learning (AaL). This study focuses both on the learning process and outcome through assessment activities. We set out with three goals in mind: (1) to examine students' assessment performance in context, (2) to evaluate its impact on student progress, and (3) to illuminate teachers on organizing assessment activities. Three specific research questions are answered in this study: (1) How do student raters perform in the process of PA in an advanced English class? (2) To what extent do assessment activities influence the students' speaking ability? (3) What are students' perceptions of PA regarding its benefits and caveats? A total of 29 undergraduate students participated in two assessment activities on argumentative speaking. Many-Facet Rasch Model analysis was conducted to measure the rater effects both at the group level and the individual level. Bias/interaction analyses were performed to diagnose rater behavior in different contexts including the rating session, speaking session, and peer assessment vs. self-assessment. Questionnaire and semi-structured interview data were also collected to explore factors and strategies that could interfere with PA as AaL. Results show that students exhibited stable rating behavior and made progress in argumentative speaking in all dimensions, including delivery, organization, and language use. They are more stringent with themselves than with peers although there is one rare case with a bias against peers. Participants acknowledged the benefits of PA but also shared reasonable concerns in practice. This study validated the feasibility and the effectiveness of PA for student learning. Discussion on findings and guidelines for effective implementation of PA as AaL are provided.

Abstract:Assessment has shifted from assessment of learning to assessment for learning. Self-assessment and peer assessment therefore appear to play more important roles as they encourage students to critically reflect on their own and their peers’ learning progress and performance. Although self-assessment and peer assessment of written language performance have been widely explored, assessment of spoken language, especially in presentation skills, is under-explored. Additionally, students’ peer assessments are found to be different from teachers’ assessments (De Grez, Valcke, & Roozen, 2012), with this possibly due to the lack of training. This study aimed to investigate whether in-service teacher participants, with experience in marking students’ performance, would be able to undertake self-assessment and peer assessment effectively in comparison to the teacher’s assessment. The study also intended to explore participants’ perceptions of self-assessment and peer assessment of English presentation skills. The participants were 14 in-service teachers teaching their native language at different levels, ranging from primary to tertiary, who were also studying English as a foreign language. The research instruments were scoring rubrics and an online questionnaire. The data were analysed by Pearson’s correlation coefficients, means and standard deviations. The results revealed that in-service teachers could perform better in peer assessment. The study’s discussion provides fruitful implications for language assessment. 
Peer–Peer Interaction between L2 Learners of Different Proficiency Levels: Their Interactions and Reflections

Abstract:Abstract: This study draws on sociocultural theory to explore how adult ESL learners interact with either a higher- or a lower-proficiency peer during pair problem solving, and how they each perceive the interactions with their partners. Three ESL learners engaged in a three-stage task: pair writing; pair noticing; and individual writing with two learners, one with a higher and one with a lower L2 proficiency level than their own. These three learners engaged in stimulated recall sessions and were interviewed after all the tasks were completed. Each pair's pattern of interaction and attitude towards the interactions were analyzed. Data showed that the higher- and the lower-proficiency peers could both provide opportunities for learning when they worked collaboratively. Moreover, all three learners preferred to work with a partner who ‘shared many ideas,’ regardless of their proficiency level. These findings suggest that proficiency differences are not the decisive factor affecting the nature of peer assistance. Rather, the pattern of interaction co-constructed by learners may have greater impact.

Abstract:Grounded on the notion of observational learning in social cognitive learning theory, this study evaluated the effectiveness of repeated self-assessment on English-as-a-foreign-language learners’ oral performance and the perceptions of the students and the instructor of this practice. Ninety-seven students from three classes in a Taiwanese college participated in this study. The classes experienced five trials of self-assessment in which they used cell phones to record their oral responses. Instead of simply rating their own recordings, the students were provided questions to guide their examination of key components of their own talk. The results show that the students’ oral performance and evaluation abilities both improved over time, and they highly valued opportunities to detect their errors and observe their real learning outcomes. The findings suggest that self-assessment bridged the gap between repeated practice and English learning by allowing the students to reflect upon their performance, find their weaknesses, adjust their following talk, and recognize their learning outcomes.

Abstract:Some studies of peer assessment in higher education are reviewed, and found to focus on either assessment of a product such as an examination script, or of the performance of a particular skill, often in a medical or dental setting. Classroom performance studies focus mainly on interpersonal skills or group dynamics. Many examples where mean peer assessments resembled lecturer assessments were found, and the overwhelming view seems to be that peer assessment is a useful, reliable and valid exercise. Student evaluations of peer assessment suggest that they also perceive it to be beneficial. However, some students expressed a dislike of awarding a grade to their peers, particularly in the context of a small, well established group. A study which attempted to capitalize on the benefits of peer assessment while minimizing the problems is described. In this study, the emphasis was on critical feedback, rather than on the awarding of a grade, though this was required also. Results indicated a close correspondence between lecturer and peer marks, as in previous studies. Feedback was perceived to be useful, and the scheme of Peer Feedback Marking (PFM) rated as conferring more benefits than the more usual, lecturer marked method. The main strength of PFM seems to be related to the enhancement of student learning by means of reflection, analysis and diplomatic criticism.

Abstract:This article analyses the use of peer and self-assessment in oral presentations as complementary tools to assessment by the professor. The analysis is based on a study conducted at the University of Girona (Spain) in seven different degree subjects and fields of knowledge. We designed and implemented two instruments to measure students’ peer and self-assessment, and a rubric to guide the assessment process. Results were compared with the marks awarded by the professor. In contrast with studies by other authors, which show a high correlation between these different assessment systems, our study revealed significant deviations. Applying peer and self-assessment to oral presentation activities also demonstrates their formative value above and beyond their summative usefulness.

Abstract:Autonomy and assessment have been the subject of renewed interest within the field of education. English Language Teaching (ELT) contexts have attracted particular interest as the importance of learner autonomy for language learners continues to be researched and acknowledged, while an understanding of the relationship between assessment and autonomy continues to grow. Questions remain, however, whether autonomy lends itself willingly to assessment, or if indeed there are unobtrusive and practical ways to do so. Nevertheless, assessment and autonomy may be related at other junctures. This paper outlines a classroom-based intervention whereby assessment descriptors were used to engage university age English language learners in Japan in reflection and response, as one of the tools used in a continuous assessment approach to the evaluation of participation and communication. An examination of the background and context underpinning this intervention is first provided, followed by an analysis of learner responses to questions related to self-assessment. In conclusion, ways in which these may be viewed in relationship to broad indicators of autonomy, and the development of metacognitive awareness are discussed.

Abstract:Peer assessment is beneficial for improving the issue of poor effectiveness in evaluation and lack of student subjectivity in traditional English writing classes, but there is relatively little research on this feedback model in high school English writing classes. With the publishing of the new curriculum standards, learning ability, and thinking capacity are more emphasized, however, in current high school English classes, they are mostly absent. This article aims to discuss the advantages of peer feedback on writing in achieving subject core goals under the guidance of curriculum standards, explore the relationship of mutual promotion between the two elements, and the potential problems of attitude arbitrariness, unfamiliar operation, and limited evaluating quality when applying peer feedback in high school. Corresponding suggestions are proposed as evaluating routinization, responsibility distribution, group diversification, assessing standards specification, and assessing ways diversification to provide assistance in the application of peer assessment in high school English writing teaching.

Abstract:A definition and typology of peer assessment between students in higher education is proposed, and the theoretical underpinnings of the method are discussed. A review of the developing literature follows, including both process and outcome studies. This indicates that peer assessment is of adequate reliability and validity in a wide variety of applications. Peer assessment of writing and peer assessment using marks, grades, and tests have shown positive formative effects on student achievement and attitudes. These effects are as good as or better than the effects of teacher assessment. Evidence for such effects from other types of peer assessment (of presentation skills, group work or projects, and professional skills) is, as yet, more limited. Computer-assisted peer assessment is an emerging growth area. Important factors in successful implementation are summarized, and recommendations for future research and practice are made.

Abstract:In the context of recent curriculum and assessment reforms in New Zealand’s school system, the assessment of foreign language (FL) students’ oral proficiency has undergone significant transformation. In line with theoretical arguments recognising both the learning benefits of peer-to-peer interaction and the importance of on-going assessments to support teaching and learning, a summative teacher-led interview test (converse) has been replaced by a model whereby students collect evidence of several learner-focused peer-to-peer interactions in the context of teaching and learning programmes (interact). However, putting theoretical principles into practice in the assessment has proven to be more challenging than anticipated. Findings of a recent research project that investigated stakeholder perspectives (teachers and students) on interact in comparison with converse have illuminated how additional conceptual understandings regarding both interaction and assessment for learning are needed. This chapter briefly outlines the theoretical rationales for interact from both pedagogical and assessment perspectives. It summarises the key findings of the research. It then presents the case of the introduction of interact in one school, drawing on data from an interview with the teacher and a focus group with his students (n = 7). The case is presented as an example of how one school is addressing the possibilities and limitations of interact in practice. Conclusions are drawn about aspects of interact that require revision and development.

Abstract:Peer assessment was introduced into the assessment strategy of two marketing modules on two undergraduate programmes at Manchester Metropolitan University. A questionnaire was used to elicit responses from a sample of 80 students concerning their attitudes to and experience of, the peer assessment exercise. Students felt that the benefits of peer assessment were: the increase in personal motivation as a result of their active involvement in the assessment process; the opportunity to compare and discuss the assignment, and the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop a greater understanding of the assignment content and assessment process. Criticisms included the effects of personal bias on the marks awarded, the interpretation of criteria and the ability of the students to assess. Some students regarded peer assessment as an incentive to perform, while others saw it as an unfair system that lacked objectivity. Over half the sample regarded assessment as solely a role for the tutor. The research found that peer assessment made a valuable contribution to the variety of assessment and it enabled students to better understand the assessment process, however, it was a time consuming process for tutors

Peer-learning in Young Learners English Speaking Tasks: An Ecological Analysis

Abstract:The study examined English teachers’ agentive actions in a speaking assessment when utilizing students’ talks as model of responses to promote peer- learning. This instrumental case study views teacher agency on assessment from an ecological perspective, emphasizing the quality of teachers’ engagement in their environment. The study involved four primary English teachers teaching Year 5 and Year 6. The data were collected through classroom observations, audio-stimulated verbal recall interviews, and field notes. The data were analyzed thematically in nVivo12Pro software, where the themes were identified through the repetition of keywords. Co-coding, back-translation, and participant validation were employed to achieve the trustworthiness and reliability of the data. The study revealed that peer-learning was facilitated following the teachers’ understanding of their ecological contexts, i.e., the emerging problems during the assessment and the students’ assessment needs. The four teachers exercised their agentive actions by assigning the More-Proficient Students (MPS) to perform a speaking talk, from which the Less-Proficient Students (LPS) could learn, and utilized the MPS’ talks accordingly. The study findings strengthened the importance of teachers’ engagement with their ecological contexts when determining agentive actions. In addition, the study shows an interplay between theories of classroom-based assessment, teacher agency, and English for young language learners to promote peer-learning. This study has implications for relevant stakeholders about providing better supports for teachers exercising their agentive roles in facilitating students’ learning.

Abstract:Peer assessment is a popular research topic as it takes place in multiple educational settings around the globe. Due to its nature, a number of intrapersonal and interpersonal factors are involved. Empirical research on these factors has been increasing and our aim was to systematically review them to extract conclusions about the relationships between peer assessment and intrapersonal and interpersonal factors. Using different search strategies, we reviewed 69 articles. We investigated: (1) the characteristics of the included studies, (2) the trends in the bidirectional relationships of intrapersonal ←→ peer assessment and interpersonal ←→ peer assessment, (3) the empirical findings in the relationships between intrapersonal factors and peer assessment, and (4) the empirical findings in the relationships between interpersonal factors and peer assessment. We identified six intrapersonal factors: motivation, self-efficacy, emotions, trust in the self as assessor, fairness, and comfort; and five interpersonal factors: social connections, trust in the other as assessor, psychological safety, value diversity/congruence, and interdependence. The results showed clear directions for some of those factors and preliminary in some of the others. This review offers directions to improve the quality of peer assessment research and explores the role of bidirectionality for future research, including an instrument to report the characteristics of future peer assessment studies to facilitate better reports and research designs.

Abstract:Peer assessment typically requires students to judge peers' work against assessment criteria. We tested an alternative approach in which students judged pairs of scripts against one another in the absence of assessment criteria. First year mathematics undergraduates (N = 194) sat a written test on conceptual understanding of multivariable calculus, then assessed their peers' responses using pairwise comparative judgement. Inter-rater reliability was investigated by randomly assigning the students to two groups and correlating the two groups' assessments. Validity was investigated by correlating the peers' assessments with (i) expert assessments, (ii) novice assessments, and (iii) marks from other module tests. We found high validity and inter-rater reliability, suggesting that the students performed well as peer assessors. We interpret the results in the light of survey and interview feedback, and discuss directions for further research into the benefits and drawbacks of peer assessment without assessment criteria.

Abstract:Feedback has a powerful influence on learning, but it is also expensive to provide. In large classes, it may even be impossible for instructors to provide individualized feedback. Peer assessment has received attention lately as a way of providing personalized feedback that scales to large classes. Besides these obvious benefits, some researchers have also conjectured that students learn by peer assessing, although no studies have ever conclusively demonstrated this effect. By conducting a randomized controlled trial in an introductory statistics class, we provide evidence that peer assessment causes significant gains in student achievement. The strength of our conclusions depends critically on the careful design of the experiment, which was made possible by a web-based platform that we developed. Hence, our study is also a proof of concept of the high-quality experiments that are possible with online tools.

Abstract:Nowadays, new methodologies have been used to complementing and assisting in the fixation of knowledge. So, the aim of this work was apply a active education methods using a study case methodology to assess the critical competence in objective and subjective assessments and self-assessment, and to analyze the results obtained in a qualitative way. Students developed content, presented seminars, evaluate their peers objectively (assigning grades) and subjective (selecting according to preference) and also performed the self-assessment. Based on the grades attributed by the students, the ability to evaluate by peers by comparing variances was evaluated. From the results obtained, we can conclude that there is a mutual influence on the two types of evaluations used in this research. Students were able to evaluate their peers and also self-evaluation. There is consistency between different evaluators and also when compared to self-criticism. From the research on the experience of active teaching, it is possible to observe the growing preference of students for this teaching methodology.

Abstract:Abstract Assessment has several advantages like involving students in learning and making them cognizant of their strengths and weaknesses. The effects of peer assessment and self-assessment as two main kinds of assessment have not examined on EFL learners’ self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills; therefore, the present research attempted to inspect the impacts of self and peer assessment activities on self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills of Iranian EFL learners. To do so, 75 Iranian EFL learners were selected and divided into two experimental groups (peer assessment group (PAG) and self-assessment group (SAG)) and one control group (CG). Then, three questionnaires of self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills were administered to the students as the pre-tests of the study. After that, one experimental group received the treatment via using self-assessment and the other experimental group received the instruction through peer assessment. The control group received a teacher-based assessment instruction. After teaching 13 English conversations to all groups, 3 post-tests were given to them to measure the impacts of the treatment on their self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The results of one-way ANOVA showed that there was a substantial difference between the post-tests of the experimental groups and the control group. The results showed that both experimental groups outperformed the control group in the post-tests of self-regulated learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, the outcomes revealed that there were no significant differences between the post-tests of the experimental groups. It can be concluded that both types of assessments play a vital role in English language teaching and learning. Based on the results of this study, language teachers, materials developers, and education authorities can concentrate on using self and peer assessments as one of the main strategies to develop the language learning ability of Iranian EFL learners.
