Abstract:Abstract: This study draws on sociocultural theory to explore how adult ESL learners interact with either a higher- or a lower-proficiency peer during pair problem solving, and how they each perceive the interactions with their partners. Three ESL learners engaged in a three-stage task: pair writing; pair noticing; and individual writing with two learners, one with a higher and one with a lower L2 proficiency level than their own. These three learners engaged in stimulated recall sessions and were interviewed after all the tasks were completed. Each pair's pattern of interaction and attitude towards the interactions were analyzed. Data showed that the higher- and the lower-proficiency peers could both provide opportunities for learning when they worked collaboratively. Moreover, all three learners preferred to work with a partner who ‘shared many ideas,’ regardless of their proficiency level. These findings suggest that proficiency differences are not the decisive factor affecting the nature of peer assistance. Rather, the pattern of interaction co-constructed by learners may have greater impact.

It presents current research of peer interaction and language learning for teachers, including background on the role of peer interaction in classroom language learning, guidelines for adopting and adapting peer interaction opportunities in real classrooms, and perspectives on teachers’ frequently expressed concerns and questions about peer interaction. Practical and comprehensive, this text brings together information on peer communication across the different skill areas, for different learners, in different contexts, and includes discussion on assessment. Abstract:This research aimed to describe the dynamics of classroom interaction and examine the factors influencing it. The researcher utilized qualitative methods, including classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. The findings revealed that the teacher predominantly led and controlled the interaction. Good interaction only occurs at the beginning of the lesson, so for the most part, the teacher initiates and the students only responded to the teacher by giving answers in the form of phrases or words. For interaction between students they are interacted with their friends most of the time. But, mostly, it was not related to the English topic discussed. The researcher also found several factors affecting classroom interaction, such as students' lack of motivation, hesitancy to speak and engage in class discussions due to limited vocabulary, embarrassment, and fear of making mistakes.

Abstract:This chapter discusses the kinds of peer interaction that influence learning in small groups and describes the characteristics of students, groups and tasks that predict different patterns of peer interaction. Based on previous empirical research, critical features of peer interaction include the level of elaboration of help given and received, and the appropriateness of responses to requests for help. Predictors of peer interaction in small groups include student ability, gender, and personality, and group composition on ability and gender. Hypotheses about important, but neglected, aspects of peer interaction that may predict learning are discussed.

Peer-learning in Young Learners English Speaking Tasks: An Ecological Analysis

Abstract:The study examined English teachers’ agentive actions in a speaking assessment when utilizing students’ talks as model of responses to promote peer- learning. This instrumental case study views teacher agency on assessment from an ecological perspective, emphasizing the quality of teachers’ engagement in their environment. The study involved four primary English teachers teaching Year 5 and Year 6. The data were collected through classroom observations, audio-stimulated verbal recall interviews, and field notes. The data were analyzed thematically in nVivo12Pro software, where the themes were identified through the repetition of keywords. Co-coding, back-translation, and participant validation were employed to achieve the trustworthiness and reliability of the data. The study revealed that peer-learning was facilitated following the teachers’ understanding of their ecological contexts, i.e., the emerging problems during the assessment and the students’ assessment needs. The four teachers exercised their agentive actions by assigning the More-Proficient Students (MPS) to perform a speaking talk, from which the Less-Proficient Students (LPS) could learn, and utilized the MPS’ talks accordingly. The study findings strengthened the importance of teachers’ engagement with their ecological contexts when determining agentive actions. In addition, the study shows an interplay between theories of classroom-based assessment, teacher agency, and English for young language learners to promote peer-learning. This study has implications for relevant stakeholders about providing better supports for teachers exercising their agentive roles in facilitating students’ learning.

Abstract:Language teachers perform constant multi-tasking in L2 classrooms while they are teaching. They manage materials, behaviours, content, discourse, and organise and co-construct learning environments at the same time. At the heart of this multi-tasking lies a process of instant decision making during classroom interaction: they initiate turns, respond to student utterances, attend to linguistic mistakes within micro-seconds. As research in the last two decades has clearly documented, the convergence between pedagogical goals and unfolding classroom interaction (Seedhouse, 2004; Walsh, 2011, 2013; Sert, 2015) is perhaps one of the most important means of creating learning opportunities for students. Opportunities for language learning are facilitated if interactional practices are fine tuned to the goal of teaching the L2. Mainly using conversation analytic methods, researchers of L2 classroom interaction have documented the interactional manoeuvres of teachers so as to understand the microscopic details of instructed language learning and teaching. Findings of these empirical observations have recently been incorporated into teacher education and development programmes, increasing the importance of classroom interaction in teacher education. Against this background, this chapter provides a review of classroom interaction research with a focus on the role of teacher talk in facilitating language learning opportunities and presents how classroom interaction and teacher development are closely related by reviewing research in both initial teacher education and in-service teacher education. After presenting research on the longitudinal development of L2 CIC, it makes a case for a technology-enhanced, reflective, and micro-analytic teacher education framework, presents practical applications, and discusses future directions.
Tackling the challenge of peer learning in hybrid and online universities

Abstract:Peer learning is not fully developed or researched in online and hybrid higher education. This research analyses a peer learning experience in the asynchronous part of hybrid teaching, in one of the largest blended universities in Europe, promoting students to act as teachers of their peers, by preparing digital content (videos) for the course. This article studies whether there are behaviour patterns and different perceptions associated between students who act as teachers, and those who only act as students. The results indicate, among other findings, that students demand this type of activities, and value them very positively. Specifically, the "teachers" consider that this activity increases their motivation for the subject and their performance; they also consider that it significantly improves their creativity and communication skills, and they would definitely participate in the project again. The assessment of the students who merely view the materials is also very positive, and they prefer a learning method through classmate videos than the traditional learning method with printed materials. The research is also a boost to finding ways to promote learning among equals in non-classroom teaching in digital environments.

Abstract:Abstract Peer learning, also known as collaborative learning, is based on social constructivism and contends that learning takes place more actively when students interact socially with their peers. This study sought to examine the effects of scaffolded peer assessment in group-oriented classrooms on developing speaking skills and enlarging the vocabulary size of language learners. To accomplish this objective, through cluster sampling, the researchers selected 37 lower-intermediate and 5 intermediate learners of English. Then, 20 lower-intermediate subjects were randomly assigned as the experimental group along with the 5 more proficient learners. In groups of 5, the intermediate learner was assigned the role of the mediator and was responsible for giving feedback to their peers. The rest of the subjects were assigned as the control group and there was no mediator in their group. Four instructional sessions were allocated to scaffolded peer assessment of speaking and four sessions were devoted to scaffolded peer assessment of vocabulary learning. In this randomized pre-test–post-test-delayed post-test trial, an independent sample t test, and a one-way repeated measures ANOVA were carried out. The results of the statistical analyses demonstrated the impact of scaffolded peer assessment on developing both speaking skills and enlarging learners’ vocabulary size with a large effect size. That is, by implementing scaffolded peer assessment in a group-oriented context both speaking skills and vocabulary knowledge can be developed. The pedagogical implication of this study is that language teacher can implement the notions of social constructivism and socio-cultural theory proposed by Vygotsky (Readings on the Development of Children 23:34-41, 1978) to expand and develop learners’ zone of proximal development.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to examine the nature and quality of interactions between 24 students (9 male, 15 female) in an Alberta elementary physical education class using video-modeling and three different peer-to-peer (P2P) evaluation methods. Nature of interaction was determined by the duration of interaction (total, on-task time, off-task time, neutral), the type of comments (positive, constructive, negative), and quality of interaction by the category of feedback (4 categories) from both the evaluators and performers. This study compared structured paper evaluation (SP), unstructured video evaluation using the video feature on iPads (UV), and structured video evaluation using a prototype app on the iPad (SV). The SV condition provided statistically significant results for evaluator on-task, evaluator off-task, and performer on-task, along with increased positive comments from evaluators. The SP condition had significantly more depth of feedback. This study concludes that the use of SV to deliver feedback in a P2P learning environment has the potential to improve the nature of feedback during peer evaluations.

Abstract:This study investigates EFL learners’ dialogues in synchronous task-based computer-mediated communication (CMC). The focus is on whether learners engage each other in text-based dialogues regarding the language use in pursuit of the task goal in the CMC context and how their mutual engagement impacts their language learning. Sixteen Chinese tertiary-level learners voluntarily participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to eight virtual pairs, and completed four collaborative tasks via Moodle, a course management system. The study was conducted within a sociocultural framework, especially Swain’s concept of collaborative dialogue. Language-related episode (LRE) was employed as a research tool to analyze the learners’ dialogue concerning their language use during the completion of the tasks. The data set includes recorded online chat logs, a post-task survey that elicited the learners’ perspectives on the online collaborative learning and two individualized posttests (immediate and delayed). The findings revealed that learners did assist each other in attending to language forms through collaborative dialogue, which consequently enhanced their language learning.

Abstract:Nowadays, new methodologies have been used to complementing and assisting in the fixation of knowledge. So, the aim of this work was apply a active education methods using a study case methodology to assess the critical competence in objective and subjective assessments and self-assessment, and to analyze the results obtained in a qualitative way. Students developed content, presented seminars, evaluate their peers objectively (assigning grades) and subjective (selecting according to preference) and also performed the self-assessment. Based on the grades attributed by the students, the ability to evaluate by peers by comparing variances was evaluated. From the results obtained, we can conclude that there is a mutual influence on the two types of evaluations used in this research. Students were able to evaluate their peers and also self-evaluation. There is consistency between different evaluators and also when compared to self-criticism. From the research on the experience of active teaching, it is possible to observe the growing preference of students for this teaching methodology.

How effective is peer interaction in facilitating learning? A meta-analysis.

Abstract:Decades of research indicate that peer interaction, where individuals discuss or work on a task collaboratively, may be beneficial for children’s and adolescents’ learning. Yet, we do not know which features of interaction may be related to learning from peer interaction. This meta-analysis examined results from 62 articles with 71 studies into peer interaction, involving a total of 7,103 participants aged 4 to 18 years. Peer interaction was effective in promoting learning in comparison with other types of learning conditions, Hedges’ g = 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI: 0.27, 0.54], p < .0001, across different gender and age groups. In contrast, however, peer interaction was not more effective than child–adult dyadic interaction. Moderator analyses also indicated that peer interaction is more effective when children are specifically instructed to reach consensus than when they are not. Findings extend theoretical considerations by teasing apart the processes through which children learn from peer interactions and offer practical implications for the effective use of peer interaction techniques in the classroom.

Abstract:Abstract This study illustrates how important peer feedback could change the traditional view of teaching inside our classroom where teacher controls the entire class. In this case, teacher will not be able to correct and give feedback to each one of his/her students because factors such as time and fatigue teachers face could affect his/her feedback. Therefore, this paper shows how using peer feedback could save teachers 'time and avoid fatigue. Also, creating an appropriate environment inside the classroom enhances the students' confidence to be able to give correct feedback. It also sheds light on constructive feedback with an appropriate scoring guides which should be provided to the students in order to avoid bias and incompetence. Then, teachers' requirements could be achieved. Overall, this study is trying to integrate the peer feedback in our courses in order to meet the required educational needs and reduces the entire teacher’s control.

Abstract:With the increasing prominence of computer-mediated communication (CMC) in higher education, the number of programmes and studies integrating online peer interaction opportunities on social media, likewise, has surged. Nevertheless, little quantitative research has been performed on the ways in which learners interact with one another via these platforms for academic purposes. As a result, little is known about how learners develop a network of peers and how they interact with this peer group through social media tools. This paper analyses the peer interaction process in a Facebook environment, integrated into the foreign language curriculum at university level. In two consecutive years, two groups of Belgian first-year foreign language learners of English (<em>N</em> = 119, <em>N</em> = 112) were invited to consult with a community of learners about their learning trajectory via the platform. Through social network analysis, it is determined which topics, challenges and personal experiences students discuss on Facebook and how these are embedded in the peer interaction process overall. While the two learner groups have different approaches to addressing learning challenges and needs, certain topics and activities consistently co-occur in interaction sequences, exemplifying how learners tend to provide scaffolded support and co-construct knowledge online. This study shows how learners can develop both their learning and language ability as a scaffolded, dialogic process within an online social networking environment when having access to a combination of information and learning resources.

Unpacking Peer Collaborative Experiences in Pre-Class Learning of Flipped Classroom With a Production-Oriented Approach

Abstract:In flipped learning (FL), the pre-class section plays an important role and determines whether meaningful and deep-level learning can take place in the following in-class section. However, previous studies focus on in-class learning and research little on the pre-class section. In order to explore an interactive mode which can ensure the effect of pre-class learning, a production-oriented peer collaboration FL framework was proposed and applied to the Business English course. Mixed research methods including questionnaire and focus group interview were used to test the effectiveness of the framework and explore effective forms of interaction. Data analysis shows that the FL framework improved significantly social interaction self-efficacy, help-seeking, and self-evaluation in self-regulated learning, thus ensured quality pre-class learning. As to interaction, eight collaboration forms were found through thematic analysis, namely comparison, correction, reaching agreement, supervision, inspiration, complementation, negotiation, and emotional support. Among them, comparison is the most beneficial and frequently mentioned collaborative behavior. This research provides an empirical case for peer interaction based on online learning tasks. It helps enrich interactive research in FL and provides teaching reference for practitioner teachers by offering a feasible framework.

Abstract:This study analyzed anonymous peer feedback among two groups of university students—a lower-performing class and a higher-performing class. Students used an audience response system to anonymously comment on each other's work. Each peer feedback or comment was categorized into one of seven types: Praise+, Praise−, Criticism+, Criticism−, Combined Praise and Criticism, Opinion, and Irrelevant. The plus (+) and minus (−) signs were used to categorize the quality of the feedback. The learning performance of the two groups of students was also analyzed. The main result showed that the lower-performing class (based on the average midterm scores) provided more substantial Criticism+ and Opinion-type comments than the higher-performing students. Contrary to expectation, no significant difference was found between the two classes on the final exam, suggesting that anonymity allowed lower-performing students to express themselves more effectively than higher-performing students, leading them to improve their learning outcomes.

Abstract:Over the years, educational institutions have increasingly integrated Web 2.0 platforms as support tools in the foreign language learning curriculum to facilitate learners’ engagement with the foreign language, increase motivation, and enable them to socially and collaboratively interact with fellow learners online. While descriptive studies on the topic have long dominated the field, they often lack close examinations of the nature of peer interaction, its mediating factors, and the effect it has on participants’ learning curve. Presenting a research project in which two groups of more than 200 first-year foreign language majors were introduced to collaborative writing through Facebook, this study demonstrates how and why online peer interaction occurs and unfolds. It is shown that learners engage in cognitive and metacognitive processes while being social and responsible participants in the learning process. These findings are compiled in a taxonomy, modelling the communicative functions of peer interaction for academic purposes in the Facebook environment. This study illustrates how first-year English majors use language to establish themselves as learners in a new learning environment while discussing academic writing challenges online. In the peer interaction process, learners initiate cardinal learning activities in which they strive for proper cognitive, metacognitive, organisational and social functioning..

Exploring classroom interaction in online education

Abstract:This present study explores the nature and extent of classroom interaction in online English as a foreign language (EFL) classes at the university level. Based on an exploratory research design, the study involved the analysis of recordings of seven visits to online EFL classes given by different instructors with approximately 30 language learners in each class. The data were analyzed by using the Communicative Oriented Language Teaching (COLT) observation sheets. Findings provided an understanding of the interaction patterns in the online classes, by showing that there was more teacher-student interaction in online classes compared to student-student interaction, and the classes involved more sustained teacher speech, whereas the students' speech mostly encompassed ultra-minimal utterance patterns. Also, the findings showed that group work activities fell behind individual activities in online classes. In addition, the online classes observed in the present study were found to be instruction-focused, and discipline issues reflected on the language used by the teachers were found to be at a minimum level. Besides, the study presented a detailed analysis of teacher and student verbal interaction by unveiling that rather than form-related incorporations, message-related incorporations were common in the observed classes and the teachers commented on the students' utterances and expanded what they said mostly. The study brings some implications for teachers, curriculum planners, and administrators by providing insights regarding classroom interaction in online EFL classes.
