Abstract:The corrosion-induced failure of marine reinforced concrete structures, stemming from prolonged exposure to environments with elevated chloride content, poses a significant threat to structural integrity and serviceability. Traditional models predominantly depend on prior information to estimate the spatial stochastic degradation of aging structures, leading to a lack of comprehensiveness and accuracy in evaluation results. To address these limitations, a data-driven probabilistic assessment model for corrosion failure is proposed. This model incorporates a pre-training phase that integrates electrochemical simulations with long-term exposure data to establish the spatiotemporal distribution of corrosion failures, thereby facilitating a thorough assessment of overall damage by quantifying the corrosion failure proportion while propagating epistemic uncertainty. Subsequently, a multivariate function is derived using the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm to elucidate the relationship between input and output variables. The efficacy of the data-driven model is evaluated through experimental observations and model predictions. The Hangzhou Bay Bridge project serves as a case study, wherein this model is demonstrated using actual data obtained from exposure experiments and field detection. Furthermore, the proposed model enables a rapid prejudgment of corrosion failure proportion, significantly reducing diagnostic time compared to conventional procedures.

Abstract:Corrosion degradation is detrimental to metal structures as it shortens their lifetime and leads to huge economic losses and unexpected disasters. Therefore, the detection and monitoring of corrosion degradation is of great importance. Herein, we briefly review the state-of-the-art electrochemical methods, instrumentation (based on virtual instrumentation), and advanced sensor/probes that are used in the field for the assessment of corrosion damage. Typical corrosion monitoring results, some of which have been obtained at Tianjin University in the past 30 years, for metallic materials and organic coating/metal systems in atmospheric, marine, and soil conditions in the field are presented. Detection methods, data analysis, and theoretical and mathematical models regarding each corrosion system are discussed, and the challenges, problems and possible solutions for each case are suggested. Lastly, future developments, such as wireless, intelligent, and automatic electrochemical measurement, that will augment the present electrochemical methods of evaluating corrosion degradation are summarized.

Abstract:In the last decade, integrated computation of corrosion has made significant progress towards the atomic-scale clarifying of corrosion mechanism and the computer-aided designing of advanced materials with excellent corrosion resistance. This presentation focuses on of theoretical calculation methods and developing tendency in the corrosion study, and three specific applications are presented. First-principle technique combined with molecular dynamics method, peridynamic theory and finite element method provide multiscale models to investigate the micro-mechanism of stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen-induced cracking. The calculation of passivity and passive film breakdown are discoursed elaborately through the point defects diffusion and its correlation of the energy level degeneracy. By surveying the publications, the artificial intelligence technology is pointed out how the computer can pave the way of predicting the corrosion degree as well as designing new corrosion resistant materials. To get better and efficient development of integrated computation of corrosion, extensive cooperation and powerful data infrastructure are needed by stronger joint efforts in the future.

Abstract:Abstract The power grid equipment has been serving in the harsh environment for a long term, if reasonable differential design is not adopted, and the operation process is not effectively supervised, the safe and stable operation of power gird system would have greater threats. Aiming at the corrosion problem of common metal material in power transmission and transformation facilities of Inner Mongolia power grid, the corrosion failure factors of carbon steel, stainless steel and copper alloy were studied by methods of energy spectrum analysis, morphology observation and metallographic examination. Then, suggestions and measures have been put forward in adopting differentiated applications, strengthening quality control and improving installation process.

Abstract:Corrosion is an electrochemical phenomenon. It can occur via different modes of attack, each having its own mechanisms, and therefore there are multiple metrics for evaluating corrosion resistance. In corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs), the rate of localized corrosion can exceed that of uniform corrosion by orders of magnitude. Therefore, instead of uniform corrosion rate, more complex electrochemical parameters are required to capture the salient features of corrosion phenomena. Here, we collect a database with an emphasis on metrics related to localized corrosion. The six sections of the database include data on various metal alloys with measurements of (1) pitting potential, Epit, (2) repassivation potential, Erp, (3) crevice corrosion potential, Ecrev, (4) pitting temperature, Tpit, (5) crevice corrosion temperature, Tcrev, and (6) corrosion potential, Ecorr, corrosion current density, icorr, passivation current density, ipass, and corrosion rate. The experimental data were collected from 85 publications and include Al- and Fe-based alloys, high entropy alloys (HEAs), and a Ni-Cr-Mo ternary system. This dataset could be used in the design of highly corrosion resistant alloys.

Abstract:Materials corrosion study is based on plenty of comparing experiments. Traditional corrosion experiments are time consuming and require manual corrosion grade evaluating during the experiment. High-throughput experiment is a novel method for high efficient experiment. This paper proposes a data acquisition system for high-throughput materials corrosion experiment. The system acquires the electrochemical signals and surface images from different sources and records them into a computer. It not only reduces the occupation of the equipment, but also effectively improves the efficiency of sample preparation and experiment occurrence.

Abstract:Steel structures form the backbone of modern infrastructure, providing strength and durability to buildings, bridges, and other critical constructions. However, iron/steel corrosion is a prevalent issue leading to significant maintenance costs and safety concerns across various industries. Understanding and inhibiting iron/steel corrosion is vital to ensuring the sustainability of these industries. Capturing atomistic scale corrosion mechanisms and interactions using traditional experimental methods is challenging. Recent advances in computational materials chemistry, particularly density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have significantly enhanced our understanding of the corrosion mechanism. This review focuses on the latest progresses using DFT and MD simulations to investigate iron/steel corrosion at the atomistic level. We discuss how these methods are employed to understand the fundamental process of oxidation, passivation and depassivation mechanisms, and the role of aggressive agents so that more effective corrosion prevention methods can be developed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive literature study on iron/steel corrosion mechanisms using computational tools and their contribution in understanding and prevention of corrosion.

Machine learning accelerated discovery of corrosion-resistant high-entropy alloys

Abstract:Corrosion has a wide impact on society, causing catastrophic damage to structurally engineered components. An emerging class of corrosion-resistant materials are high-entropy alloys. However, high-entropy alloys live in high-dimensional composition and configuration space, making materials designs via experimental trial-and-error or brute-force ab initio calculations almost impossible. Here we develop a physics-informed machine-learning framework to identify corrosion-resistant high-entropy alloys. Three metrics are used to evaluate the corrosion resistance, including single-phase formability, surface energy and Pilling-Bedworth ratios. We used random forest models to predict the single-phase formability, trained on an experimental dataset. Machine learning inter-atomic potentials were employed to calculate surface energies and Pilling-Bedworth ratios, which are trained on first-principles data fast sampled using embedded atom models. A combination of random forest models and high-fidelity machine learning potentials represents the first of its kind to relate chemical compositions to corrosion resistance of high-entropy alloys, paving the way for automatic design of materials with superior corrosion protection. This framework was demonstrated on AlCrFeCoNi high-entropy alloys and we identified composition regions with high corrosion resistance. Machine learning predicted lattice constants and surface energies are consistent with values by first-principles calculations. The predicted single-phase formability and corrosion-resistant compositions of AlCrFeCoNi agree well with experiments. This framework is general in its application and applicable to other materials, enabling high-throughput screening of material candidates and potentially reducing the turnaround time for integrated computational materials engineering.

Abstract:The study of corroded metal materials in building structures is the basis for analyzing and evaluating the residual bearing capacities of existing structures. In this study, the corrosion behaviors and residual properties of two types of low-alloy steel and a 6061-T6 aluminum alloy were investigated under different corrosion times in an acetic acid spray environment. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning were performed. Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on the three metal materials with different corrosion levels. The test results showed that the corrosion rate of the aluminum alloy increased with corrosion time, and the corrosion rates of the low-alloy steels decreased with corrosion time. The pitting of the low-alloy steels was shallow and wide; the pitting of the 6061-T6 aluminum alloy was narrow and deep. Characteristic parameters are proposed for the pitting morphologies of the low-alloy steels. The corrosion depths of the pitting were more inclined toward a generalized extreme value distribution. Simplified models and evaluation indexes were defined for the stress-strain relationships of the three materials. The two types of low-alloy steel were reduced to 60% of their original engineering strength, and the engineering strength of the aluminum alloy was reduced to 85%. Methods are proposed for evaluating the residual mechanical properties of different structural materials with different corrosion behaviors.

Abstract:The paper reviewed the environmental degradation of mechanical properties of various materials, i.e., magnesium alloy AZ91D, low alloy steel A537 and aluminum alloy LY12CZ. The relative humidity and corrosive environment have much influence on the mechanical properties, including yield strength, ultimate strength, elongation, fatigue strength, plastic zone in the vicinity of crack tip etc. The loading procedures for corrosion and fatigue also have strong effect on the final fatigue lifetime. Therefore, for mechanical design and failure analysis, the environment conditions should be considered. To separate the material and environment by using coatings, to obtain compact surface film by modifying the surface properties, or to develop the corrosion resistant materials to against environmental failure are very important to improve the lifetime and reliability of engineering structures and components. The possible consideration against environmental damage and materials degradation control methods were proposed.

Abstract:Population growth in the cities in developing countries necessitates the expansion of reclaimed water production and utilization. Corrosion of iron and steel components in supply systems can cause water quality deterioration and lead to extra costs for maintenance. An increasing number of studies have investigated the properties of corrosion scales formed on iron and steel components in reclaimed water. These works have attempted to use material characterization approaches to reveal the morphological, mineralogical and other chemical features of corrosion scales. Some works have sought to clarify the biological and electrochemical mechanisms for the formation of scales. The structure of microbial communities on corrosion scales have been identified and corrosion mechanisms postulated. The current work provides an updated overview on the properties of corrosion scales of iron and steel components in reclaimed water distribution systems. Studies on the mechanisms of corrosion formation are summarized. In addition, some suggestions for further studies are given.

Abstract:As the primary raw material of steel structure buildings, steel is sensitive to environmental factors and prone to electrochemical corrosion, which poses a serious threat to the safety of the whole structure. The mechanical property degradation of steel structures after corrosion is not only related to the corrosion depth but also closely related to the uneven corrosion morphology and location distribution in 3D space. Based on this, this paper proposed an integrated method that can realize the 3D corrosion evolution prediction process on steel member surface and the evaluation of its mechanical properties respectively. Through the method, the real-time dynamic changes of 3D corrosion interface can be tracked based on electrochemical corrosion mechanism and level-set model. Then the results of corrosion evolution can be conveniently converted into mechanical analysis models for loading solution. The prediction effect and mechanical analysis function of the method were verified by a salt spray exposure corrosion test of Q235 steel and a compression loading test of a long-term corroded steel plate. The integrated method can provide a method support for predicting the remaining service life of steel structures in corrosive environments, reasonably selecting maintenance time and preventing collapse in the future.

Abstract:Oxidation and corrosion are the leading causes of degradation and failure of metallic materials. Future alloy development requires the incorporation of corrosion resistance into alloy design and processing, and this begins with attaining a fundamental insight into dynamic reaction mechanisms and kinetics between a metal and aggressive environments. With recent advances in environmental transmission electron microscopy, there have been increased efforts to apply this approach to atomically probe the microscopic mechanisms that govern the oxidation and corrosion behavior of metallic materials. Consequently, fundamental insights have been obtained in understanding the underlying processes of oxidation and passivation, including active sites, surface restructuring, oxide/metal interface dynamics, and microstructure and phase evolution. In addition, we discuss ongoing and future developments that are expected to significantly advance the field of high-temperature oxidation and corrosion.

Abstract:Due to increasing attentions to supercritical water reactor (SCWR), the corrosion response of materials in supercritical water (SCW) has attracted lots of research interests. This paper summarizes the current corrosion test results conducted in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SITU) and compares the data with literature data. The corrosion resistances of candidate materials (including ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steel, austenitic stainless steel, alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) stainless steel and oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel) in supercritical water are discussed and analyzed. High Cr content austenitic stainless steel, proper Cr content AFA stainless steel and ODS steel are promising cladding materials for SCWR since they generally have satisfactory corrosion resistance even in 650 degrees C SCW. Abstract:It is of great significance for corrosion prediction to avoid sudden accident, reduce casualties and environmental damage. This paper introduces the basic methods of corrosion prediction for the materials in natural environment. Firstly, statistical methods of corrosion prediction, including the linear extrapolation prediction method based on the function model and the extrapolation prediction method based on the related model, are showed. Then, some modern and mathematic methods for the corrosion prediction, such as grey forecasting method, prediction method of neural network, prediction method of pattern recognition, have been expounded. Finally, the typical applications in natural environment of those methods have been summarized.

Abstract:Materials corrosion study is based on plenty of contrast experiments. Traditional corrosion experiments are time-consuming and require manual corrosion grade evaluating during the experiment. To improve the efficiency of experiment, a high-throughput experiment platform is designed and accomplished. The platform mainly consists of high-throughput corrosion reaction facility, data acquisition system, and data processing system. The corrosion reaction facility supports high-throughput materials corrosion reactions under various conditions. The data acquisition system is mainly responsible for capturing the images of samples’ surface, collecting electrochemical signals, and storing them into the computer in real time. The data processing system treats the acquired data and evaluates the degree of materials corrosion in real time by program automatically. The platform not only reduces the occupation of the equipment but also improves the efficiency of sample preparation and experiment occurrence. The experimental data shows that the platform can accomplish high-throughput corrosion contrast experiment easily and reduce the time cost obviously.
