Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and black phosphorous have drawn tremendous attention as an emerging optical material due to their unique and remarkable optical properties. In addition, the ability to create the atomically-controlled van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures enables realizing novel optoelectronic devices that are distinct from conventional bulk counterparts. In this short review, we first present the atomic and electronic structures of 2D semiconducting TMDCs and their exceptional optical properties, and further discuss the fabrication and distinctive features of vdW heterostructures assembled from different kinds of 2D materials with various physical properties. We then focus on reviewing the recent progress on the fabrication of 2D semiconductor optoelectronic devices based on vdW heterostructures including photodetectors, solar cells, and light-emitting devices. Finally, we highlight the perspectives and challenges of optoelectronics based on 2D semiconductor heterostructures.

Abstract:In the growing list of 2D semiconductors as potential successors to silicon in future devices, metal-halide perovskites have recently joined the family. Unlike other conversional 2D covalent semiconductors such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, etc., 2D perovskites are ionic materials, affording many distinct properties of their own, including high photoluminescence quantum efficiency, balanced large exciton binding energy and oscillator strength, and long carrier diffusion length. These unique properties make 2D perovskites potential candidates for optoelectronic and photonic devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, nanolasers, waveguides, modulators, and so on, which represent a relatively new but exciting and rapidly expanding area of research. In this Review, the recent advances in emerging 2D metal-halide perovskites and their applications in the fields of optoelectronics and photonics are summarized and insights into the future direction of these fields are offered.

Abstract:In the past few years, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials have attracted increasing attention of the research community, owing to their unique electronic and optical properties, ranging from the valley–spin coupling to the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition when scaling the materials from multi-layer to monolayer. These properties are appealing for the development of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices with important applications in the broad fields of communication, computation, and healthcare. One of the key features of the TMDC family is the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition that occurs when the material thickness decreases from multilayer to monolayer, which is favorable for many photonic applications. TMDCs have also demonstrated unprecedented flexibility and versatility for constructing a wide range of heterostructures with atomic-level control over their layer thickness that is also free of lattice mismatch issues. As a result, layered TMDCs in combination with other 2D materials have the potential for realizing novel high-performance optoelectronic devices over a broad operating spectral range. In this article, we review the recent progress in the synthesis of 2D TMDCs and optoelectronic devices research. We also discuss the challenges facing the scalable applications of the family of 2D materials and provide our perspective on the opportunities offered by these materials for future generations of nanophotonics technology.

Abstract:2D materials, such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorus, have become the most potential semiconductor materials in the field of optoelectronic devices due to their extraordinary properties. Owing to the layer‐dependent and appropriately sized bandgaps, photodetectors based on various 2D materials are designed and manufactured rationally. Utilizing the unique properties of 2D materials, many surprising physical phenomena of junctions based on 2D materials can be obtained after different 2D materials are stacked together. This makes heterojunctions more popular than 2D materials themselves, and the design of 2D materials for human beings is easier than ever. In this review, recent progress in optoelectronic applications based on 2D materials and their heterojunctions is summarized and discussed. Owing to their controllable optoelectronic properties, good mechanical flexibility, strong light–material interaction, and broadband optical response, 2D materials and their heterostructures are attracting increasing attention for photonic applications. The basic properties, syntheses, and working mechanisms of 2D materials used in optoelectronic devices are introduced, and the challenges to achieving practical applications of 2D materials are also discussed.

Abstract:The two-dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenides provide new opportunities in future valley-based information processing and also provide an ideal platform to study excitonic effects. At the center of various device physics toward their possible electronic and optoelectronic applications is understanding the dynamical evolution of various manyparticle electronic states, especially exciton which dominates the optoelectronic response of TMDs, under the novel context of valley degree of freedom. Here, we provide a brief review of experimental advances in using helicity-resolved ultrafast spectroscopy, especially ultrafast pump–probe spectroscopy, to study the dynamical evolution of valley-related many-particle electronic states in semiconducting monolayer transitional metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Two-dimensional group-VI transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, such as MoS2, WSe2, and others, exhibit strong light-matter coupling and possess direct band gaps in the infrared and visible spectral regimes, making them potentially interesting candidates for various applications in optics and optoelectronics. Here, we review their optical and optoelectronic properties with emphasis on exciton physics and devices. As excitons are tightly bound in these materials and dominate the optical response even at room-temperature, their properties are examined in depth in the first part of this article. We discuss the remarkably versatile excitonic landscape, including bright, dark, localized and interlayer excitons. In the second part, we provide an overview on the progress in optoelectronic device applications, such as electrically driven light emitters, photovoltaic solar cells, photodetectors, and opto-valleytronic devices, again bearing in mind the prominent role of excitonic effects. We conclude with a brief discussion on challenges that remain to be addressed to exploit the full potential of transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors in possible exciton-based applications.

Abstract:Apart from conventional materials, the study of two-dimensional (2D) materials has emerged as a significant field of study for a variety of applications. Graphene-like 2D materials are important elements of potential optoelectronics applications due to their exceptional electronic and optical properties. The processing of these materials towards the realization of devices has been one of the main motivations for the recent development of photonics and optoelectronics. The recent progress in photonic devices based on graphene-like 2D materials, especially topological insulators (TIs) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with the methodology level discussions from the viewpoint of state-of-the-art designs in device geometry and materials are detailed in this review. We have started the article with an overview of the electronic properties and continued by highlighting their linear and nonlinear optical properties. The production of TIs and TMDs by different methods is detailed. The following main applications focused towards device fabrication are elaborated: (1) photodetectors, (2) photovoltaic devices, (3) light-emitting devices, (4) flexible devices and (5) laser applications. The possibility of employing these 2D materials in different fields is also suggested based on their properties in the prospective part. This review will not only greatly complement the detailed knowledge of the device physics of these materials, but also provide contemporary perception for the researchers who wish to consider these materials for various applications by following the path of graphene.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted a great deal of interest in recent years. This family of materials allows for the realization of versatile electronic devices and holds promise for next-generation (opto)electronics. Their electronic properties strongly depend on the number of layers, making them interesting from a fundamental standpoint. For electronic applications, semiconducting 2D materials benefit from sizable mobilities and large on/off ratios, due to the large modulation achievable via the gate field-effect. Moreover, being mechanically strong and flexible, these materials can withstand large strain (>10\%) before rupture, making them interesting for strain engineering and flexible devices. Even in their single layer form, semiconducting 2D materials have demonstrated efficient light absorption, enabling large responsivity in photodetectors. Therefore, semiconducting layered 2D materials are strong candidates for optoelectronic applications, especially for photodetection. Here, we review the state-of-the-art in photodetectors based on semiconducting 2D materials, focusing on the transition metal dichalcogenides, novel van der Waals materials, black phosphorus, and heterostructures.

Abstract:The past one and a half decades have witnessed the tremendous progress of two-dimensional (2D) crystals, including graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXenes, hexagonal boron nitride, etc., in a variety of fields. The key to their success is their unique structural, electrical, mechanical and optical properties. Herein, this paper gives a comprehensive summary on the recent advances in 2D materials for optoelectronic approaches with the emphasis on the morphology and structure, optical properties, synthesis methods, as well as detailed optoelectronic applications. Additionally, the challenges and perspectives in the current development of 2D materials are also summarized and indicated. Therefore, this review can provide a reference for further explorations and innovations of 2D material-based optoelectronics devices.

Abstract:Despite over a decade of intense research efforts, the full potential of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides continues to be limited by major challenges. The lack of compatible and scalable dielectric materials and integration techniques restrict device performances and their commercial applications Conventional dielectric integration techniques for bulk semiconductors are difficult to adapt for atomically thin two-dimensional materials. This review provides a brief introduction into various common and emerging dielectric synthesis and integration techniques and discusses their applicability for 2D transition metal dichalcogenides. Dielectric integration for various applications is reviewed in subsequent sections including nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, flexible electronics, valleytronics, biosensing, quantum information processing, and quantum sensing. For each application, we introduce basic device working principles, discuss the specific dielectric requirements, review current progress, present key challenges, and offer insights into future prospects and opportunities.

Abstract:The ultimate goal of making atomically thin electronic devices stimulates intensive research on layered materials, in particular the group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Atomically thin group-VI TMD crystals with a 2H stacking order emerging as a family of intrinsic 2-dimensional (2D) semiconductors with a sizeable bandgap in the visible and near infrared range satisfy numerous requirements for ultimate electronics and optoelectronics. In addition, the characteristic inversion symmetry breaking presented in monolayer TMDs leads to non-zero but contrasting Berry curvatures and orbit magnetic moments at K/K' valleys located at the corners of the first Brillouin zone. These features provide an opportunity to manipulate electrons' additional internal degrees of freedom, namely the valley degree of freedom, making monolayer TMDs a promising candidate for the conceptual valleytronics. Besides, the strong spin-orbit interactions and the subsequent spin-valley coupling demonstrated in atomically thin group-VI TMDs open up potential routes towards quantum manipulation. In this tutorial review, we highlight recent advances in the optical study on electronic structures, vibrational properties, excitonic effects, valley dependent optical selection rules, and the interplay of valley, spin, and layer degrees of freedoms in this class of atomic 2D semiconductors including MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2.

Abstract:The fields of atomically thin two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) have witnessed notable progress, resulting in a range of intriguing applications in nanoelectronics, photonics, sensing, energy storage, and opto-electronics. This article offers a comprehensive look at the latest progress in two-dimensional (2D) materials that go beyond graphene. Our main interest lies in TMDCs like MoS 2 , WS 2 , MoSe 2 , and WSe 2 . These materials are used in specific applications for advanced electronics and optoelectronics devices that depend on very thin atomic layers. Even though there have been challenges along the way in developing scalable and defect-free TMDCs on preferred substrates, scientists have managed to come up with innovative growth techniques that work well with both common and unconventional substrates. These developments have been driven by the increasing demand for precise and reliable TMDCs in real-world scenarios. TMDCs may play a critical role in the development in bio-medical applications, like biomedical imaging, medication administration, clinical diagnostics, and photodynamic therapy. A multilayer device architecture may facilitate the creation of a gate-defined quantum dot (QD) in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) for future quantum applications. Focus is on creating cutting-edge two-dimensional TMDCs with distinct features and new chemical characteristics. Furthermore, in addition to the realm of electronics, a considerable amount of research has focused on investigating the possibilities of these materials for energy and sensing applications, which are thoroughly analyzed.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMD) quantum dots (QDs) have attracted a lot of attention due to their interesting fundamental properties and various applications. Compared to TMD monolayers, the QD counterpart exhibits larger direct transition energies, exciton binding energies, absorption coefficient, luminescence efficiency, and specific surface area. These characteristics make them useful in optoelectronic device applications. In this review, recent exciting progress on TMD-QD based synthesis, optical properties, and applications are highlighted. The first part of this article begins with a brief description of the synthesis approaches, which focus on the microwave-assistant heating and pulsed laser ablation methods. The second part introduces the fundamental optical properties of TMD QDs such as quantum confinement in optical absorption, excitation-wavelength-dependent photoluminescence, and many-body effects. These properties are highlighted. In the third part, the new developments on TMD-QD-based optoelectronic devices, including light-emitting diodes, solar cells, photodetectors, optical sensors, and light-controlled memory devices are addressed. Finally, a brief summary and outlook are given.

Abstract:The emerging 2D semiconductors have aroused increasing attention due to their fascinating fundamental properties and application prospects. Technical investigation of 2D semiconductor-based electronics and optoelectronics is paving the way to realizing practical applications, which opens up new opportunities to reshape the current semiconductor industry. Particularly, 2D semiconductor-based optoelectronics can be extensively utilized in the promising semiconductor and information industries, such as solid-state lighting, on-chip optical interconnects, quantum computing, and communication. Here, the research progress regarding the fabrication and characterization of rapidly growing light-emitting devices and photodetectors enabled by 2D semiconductors is reviewed. According to different emission mechanisms, 2D semiconductor-activated light sources are classified into four types: excitonic light-emitting diodes (LEDs), quantum LEDs, valley LEDs, and lasers. Moreover, photodetecting devices based on atomically thin MoS2, other 2D semiconductors, and van der Waals heterostructures are discussed, where diverse device structures, performance parameters, and working principles are compared. Furthermore, the remaining challenges in the realization of practical devices with desirable features are outlined and new research opportunities for 2D semiconductor optoelectronics are proposed.

Abstract:One of the most nascent and universally accepted categories among the 2D materials is the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The absence of bandgap in graphene fomented the researchers to quest for an alternative semiconducting 2D materials. The aberrant optical and electronic properties helped 2D TMDs to excel in fundamental research and novel device applications. This article overviews the recent advances in the preparation methods, properties, characterization, and novel multifunctional applications of TMDs and their corresponding heterostructures with special emphasis on their biosensing applications. The major portion of the review underlines the TMDs based heterostructures, which find potential applications in optoelectronics, sensors, and photovoltaics, that are devised to boost the functionality and flexibility and there by surmount the existing limitations of monolayered materials. At the end, the advancement and elevation of TMDs as biosensors over other 2D materials are also explored.

Abstract:In the last decade atomically thin 2D materials have emerged as a perfect platform for studying and tuning light-matter interaction and electronic properties in nanostructures. The optoelectronic properties in layered materials such as transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMDs) are governed by excitons, Coulomb bound electron-hole pairs, even at room temperature. The energy, wave function extension, spin and valley properties of optically excited conduction electrons and valence holes are controllable via multiple experimentally accessible knobs, such as lattice strain, varying atomic registries, dielectric engineering as well as electric and magnetic fields. This results in a multitude of fascinating physical phenomena in optics and transport linked to excitons with very specific properties, such as bright and dark excitons, interlayer and charge transfer excitons as well as hybrid and moiré excitons. In this book chapter we introduce general optoelectronic properties of 2D materials and energy landscapes in TMD monolayers as well as their vertical and lateral heterostructures, including twisted TMD hetero- and homobilayer bilayers with moiré excitons and lattice recombination effects. We review the recently gained insights and open questions on exciton diffusion, strain- and field-induced exciton drift. We discuss intriguing non-linear many-particle effects, such as exciton halo formation, negative and anomalous diffusion, the surprising anti-funneling of dark excitons.

Abstract:Tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a promising material with excellent electrical, magnetic, optical, and mechanical properties. It is regarded as a key candidate for the development of optoelectronic devices due to its high carrier mobility, high absorption coefficient, large exciton binding energy, polarized light emission, high surface-to-volume ratio, and tunable band gap. These properties contribute to its excellent photoluminescence and high anisotropy. These characteristics render WS2 an advantageous material for applications in light-emitting devices, memristors, and numerous other devices. This article primarily reviews the most recent advancements in the field of optoelectronic devices based on two-dimensional (2D) nano-WS2. A variety of advanced devices have been considered, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), sensors, field-effect transistors (FETs), photodetectors, field emission devices, and non-volatile memory.
